After living in Houston for several years, I have never had the chance to visit any of the now seven Slowpokes locations until today. This East Downtown location, situated on the corner of Canal and N Sampson streets in a converted gas station just opened today, and what a great addition to the neighborhood. They offer a full menu of coffee, tea, wine and beer in addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner options. The inside is comfortable and open, perfect to spend a couple of hours doing work or stopping by for a bite to eat with friends or family. As a converted gas station, they have tastefully converted the outside service area to a large outdoor seating area. There's several parking spots onsite in addition to street parking on N Sampson street. At least two different Metro stops are also just a block away making it accessible to all regardless of your transportation status.
When I arrived the barista was very welcoming and helped me select a beverage based on my preferences - strong caffeine, dairy free, and less sweet. I ended up going with the "with love" latte which is one of their specialty lattes with honey and cinnamon. Regardless of your beverage selection, they are able to customize sweetness to your liking. While they do have a number of milk alternatives including oat, almond, and coconut (no pistachio yet), I was slightly disappointed to see that these are an additional $1 charge. Call me stingy but this always bothers me.
Overall, the drink was tasty! I'm excited to see Slowpokes join the neighborhood and will certainly be back to try their food and enjoy the patio!
