Sly Mongoose

I have lived in Maui for 16 years and just now finally found the Sly Mongoose. I have always hear about and seen the tshirts but during a day trip to the west side to just explore we stumbled upon it. Excellent atmosphere and service and very clean. It’s a bar where you can sit and enjoy conversation around the bar and relax. I wish there were more water holes like it on the island and will definitely return.

Probably the best Dive Bar in Maui. Although, I haven't visited any others. On the other hand, there aren't very many dive bars to be found ... We had great drinks, cheap prices, and a very friendly bartender, Jim.

OK, so I haven't been there for 7 years, but I think of this awesome bar often. We asked the bartender at our resort where he goes. We wanted to get away from the resorts and wanted a cool low key bar. Thought we were lost until we pulled up to the bar behind an industrial strip mall. I met some very cool locals there and we all drank and laughed all night. The bartender was awesome and so were the locals. I believe one of them was Carpet Dave and a guy named peg leg. Can't wait to go back one day.

I love the man that works during the week he’s amazing and we had the perfect wedding party there. 2 days straight he was amazing. I go into the bar Saturday night and the lady working was horrible. She kicked out a 7 person party & us. She doesn’t want business & is ruining yours.

The bar tender was funny. As a tourist, I enjoyed seen no how the locals interact with each other as well as my party. I found the crowd welcoming and very social. Overall I had a great experience. If you are looking for an inexpensive low key place to drink this is where you should go. Just don't pepper the locals with questions.

Found this place while looking for a hookah bar. It seems like all the other reviews highly recommended it and once I saw the had t-shirts I had made it a point to get here. This place is really hidden so you can truly only find it if you are looking for it. I was definitely looking for it and I got my tee and had a beer. I'd definitely come.back again.

Gave this place 4 stars because it's air-conditioned and cool! It's the very cute small bar, kind of off the beaten path, but I really like dive bars, i've heard they had some pretty cool people come through and play music there, I was able to play the jukebox, the people there were all very chill. I did deduct a star because the drinks were not very strong. My girlfriend had five drinks and I had three and we weren't very buzzed at all. But overall I would definitely go back. They also have a few TVs too

We were the life of the party at Sly Mongoose also known as the ONLY people at the party at Sly Mongoose. Small little dive bar. Let's just get the my "high maintenance AF" cons out of the way. CONS: -highest shelf tequila was Patron, after that was Hornitos and Sauza *barf* -no redbull/energy drinks. HOW ELSE WAS I GOING TO DANCE MY HEART OUT IN MAUI -no Kareoke despite what other reviewers had mentioned -closed at 12am on a Friday night (probably due to Covid though) PROS: -jukebox -jukebox that turned into Karaoke -A TON of karaoke songs for $20 -7 vodka sodas for $45!!! SUCH A STEAL. If you got a good group, this place should be a ton of fun. We got to essentially DJ our own music. Drink prices were a STEAL compared to being a resort. Requesting: AT LEAST don julio silver the next we're there :) Clase Azul or 1942 would be better though. See you next time you Sly Mongoose.

We searched for dive bar and found this little treasure. We brought our adults kids with us. People were friendly. The baseball game and some hockey too! Our kind of style. We even bought some tshirts to remember the place. It's not a big place but the Cheers feel. Everyone loves sitting at the bar. PS The bathroom were clean too!

So we went to this awesome dive bar where the locals go to and met some awesome people. They had this bell that you ring and it means you buy a round a drinks for everyone. Let's just say that bell kept ringing such a fun spot and yea there was some nice air conditioning there

Our kind of place. Local, inexpensive and friendly. We stopped in every day during our stay in Maui. We will be visiting there again next year.

Was here April 2023, We were staying at the Whaler in Ka'anapali and wanted to find a cool local "dive bar"! Got tattoos at Blue Hawaii tattoos them came here, all the regulars were so cool friendly, we are heading back to Ka'anapali in 2 weeks and so bummed we can't come by and have a few drinks! So glad we bought T-shirts last year, I sport mone all the time in CA.

No frills dive bar located near Lahaina Front St. Everyone at the bar was so nice and inviting with the bartender pouring great drinks! A great bar to checkout if you're wanting to get away from the tourist-y areas! We came in early around 9pm on a Saturday night and it was pretty dead, but picked up once it got around 10pmish.

As honeymooners, we wanted to go to a fun bar on our last night in Maui, and it was super fun! I'd describe the Sly Mongoose as a local bar, people were cool and so was the bartender. Reasonable prices, and I got a cool t-shirt! Would recommend. Just FYI- bar doesn't close at 2am, last call was around 12:45am.

RIP Sly Mongoose This was our go to spot when we went to Hawaii. Absolutely the best locals and reasonable prices. One of the best dive bars and hidden from tourist attractions. Great bartenders too. On a side note I will keep Hawaii and Lahaina in my prayers. Lost for words.

Absolutely a gem of a place. First night in Maui and Donna made it memorable! Superb service and local customers were the best. Definitely a go to place, don't miss out!

My favorite kind of bar. Friendly regulars, no-nonsense bartender who knows how to pour a drink and good vibes. My husband and I were leaving Front St on a Sunday evening when everything was closing up around 10pm. We weren't ready to go back to the hotel yet, so I looked to see if there were any dive bars open and The Sly Mongoose came up. A regular seated at the bar near the door greeted us when we came in. There was a couple getting up to leave as we arrived so they gave us their seats. Sat down, ordered drinks, Johnny the bartender made a crack about my husband's drink order (some light beer, can't remember which), and we knew we were in for a good time. We didn't stay long, maybe an hour or so. But it was a chill spot and I'm sorry we didn't discover it sooner during our vacation. My husband and I have already agreed that next time we're in Maui, we have to drop in again.

Great secret spot. Friendly local crowd. Don't be a kook, and tip your bartender. Good spot for a shot n a beer. If you want a cocktail in a coconut with an umbrella, go to moose McGillicuddys, then go home

Don't come here if you're not a local, white or anything remotely diverse. I went in with my wife and was flat out refused service because the bar was "at capacity". Empty tables everywhere. After speaking to locals they explained this bar has a reputation for doing this. Wouldn't recommend to anyone visiting!

Great people and great atmosphere. Can't say enough, go visit, they love visitors. Excited to come back! My shirt is already faded and need a new one!

my son first brought me to this place a couple of years ago as he knows I am in aficionado of dive bars. Definitely neither fancy on the outside or the inside, but it is exactly what I expected. Bartenders are friendly and the service is quick. No frills, but a great place to keep up with local happenings.

Great little dive bar away from the touristy hustle... Got recommended by the brewery near by. Will be back the next time that I am in Lahaina.

Favorite bar in Maui. We had the best time and met with such Aloha. Kev the bartender was so fun!! The regulars were also a blast. They have touch tunes which was fun to take over the music.

Five Stars. Now, be careful what you are looking for. This is primarily a locals place. I hesitate to even call it a dive bar because that implies that there is some charm to the place that secretly some hipsters are going to enjoy. It really doesn't have any of that. Its a local bar. Almost all function with nothing more. Now, to be fair. Let me tell you why I personally love it. Its in an industrial area. Sometimes you just get tired of all the glitz and touristy areas and need to get back to basics. I seem to find boat captains, dive instructors, construction workers, and all other locals in here. Everyone is pretty friendly even if they are a little on the rough or crusty side. Bartenders and (to be honest) me, included. Cheap beer in cans, good selection of liquor. Tiny place: Seats maybe 10 or so at the bar. A couple tables along the back wall and thats it. Food? Nope. Maybe some chips but Im not even sure they have those all the time. A beautiful tropical ocean view? Nope. I think there is a window but there is no need to look out on the parking lot. Ice Cold Air conditioning and a dark respite from the hot hawaiian sun rounds out this Lahaina institution. I think its been here forever. Don't quote me but I think they have been here for nearly 40 years! I have been coming here periodically for over 20 years. Originally because I worked on the island and came to the industrial area it is in to have SCUBA tanks filled but I keep coming back when on vacation for cheap booze/beer, a little local flavor and the same bartenders I remember. I will be back the next time I am in Lahaina for sure.

Great dive bar. A must stop for a cheap drink with good people. Not the touristy trap that surrounds the resorts. This is the type of bar you'd find deep deep in Alaska or Montana.

My kinda place while on vacation my first time In Maui. Bought a shirt and proud to say I had drinks with some locals there. Sorry to hear that it's gone.

If you are a dive bar person, this is your place! Wonderful bartender, great local patrons, just a cool place to have a drink. They are a full bar and have great prices! We will definitely be back!

On our 2nd night in town, looking for a spot to grab a drink and mingle with locals. First impressions, RUN. We parked. We went in. The area does appear a little sketchy, it's industrial. When we went in it was us and the bartender. Took him a second to warm up, but once he did he seemed cool enough to hang out. Test crows started to trickle in slowly over time, the bartender was attentive made sure we were good even when a crowd came in. If I'm back in town we'll come back here.

Great place to hook up with the sexiest folks in town. Unpretentious, glamorous elders that provide pearls of wisdom. Or at the very least, fishing or plumbing advice. Pull up a stool and listen to conversations you'll never forget. Cats, dogs and parrots are welcome. Make lifelong friends for an hour. Hint: Don't lend money. They're all millionaires.

Bartender was clearly on one. Told me and my gf dancing at a bar was illegal. Told me he needed time me to tell him his in person his tip (super uncomfortable) and tried to keep an 8 tip I didn't give him. Avoid this place. How it has 4 1/2 stars is beyond me.

Are you kidding me???? Cool as s*** bartender, Donna, air conditioning and great drinks!! So fun. BYOF (Food) just to make this place even cooler. A super cas and late(r) night in sleepy Maui for those who want to extend your night.

We asked a local for the best dive bar in town with "grunge/Waffle House vibes" and they led us to the Sly Mongoose. Little did I know it would be the best night of my whole entire life and a core memory I will share with generations to come. Truly a place where everyone was family and Donna knew their regular orders as soon as they walked in. Her special recipe margaritas and the root beer shots were as delightful and surprising as the bar dogs that wandered in with their owners. Donna even preformed a song for me with her instrument of choice, the soda gun. The chaos of it all was perfect and felt like a Benadryl-induced fever dream. I have never left a Yelp review in my life but I was THAT moved by the perfection of the Sly Mongoose. I left with 3 koozies, a t-shirt, and my seasonal depression completely erased. I can only thank our lord and savior Jesus Christ for leading me to sister Donna and the Sly Mongoose. Ohana means family. Family is found here. This is my Mount Everest

Great dive bar, but the experience is only satisfying when you ring the bell. Andy is great bar tender and the regulars are wealth of information about the island.

Miss Donna is amazing! And she helped us have the best time at sly mongoose. She poured my drink strong, she made us laugh, and most importantly she made us feel at home. If you want to go to a dive bar in Maui, Sly Mongoose are spot.

I love south side and found this GEM of a dive bar after a friend recommended it. Donna, the bartender, is the BEST. Bestie and I had a wonderful time due to her good pours and her sense of humor. definitely coming back. #superior

Great small local dive bar away from the tourists area and prices. Bartender and patrons were friendly. 1st time to Hawaii didn't realize how hard Ubers were to get late at night in Lahaina. The bartender called a local cab that operates late so we could get back to resort. Limited to 12 ppl due to COVID restrictions.

Awesome dive bar, off the beaten path, and close to a yummy bakery, some art spots & pawn shops. The bartender chick was super cool, friendly & funny. If you need a break from the masses & want to be around some locals, the Mongoose is a great spot for a frosty root beer schnapps or a corona.

I thought this place had karaoke and made my group of friends (about 25 people) walk 20 mins to get here. First of all, it is a weird location. In a business park area. Second, they DO NOT have karaoke. Third, the main guy working the bar was super rude too. As soon as we walked in he was bothered by us being there. It was not like we were rowdy or anything, we were just THERE... Fourth, he literally shouted in the bar that we had to show him our ID or get out. My group of friends is all in their early 30's, not 20's... I've never been in a bar where they shouted it through the bar. It was weird and rude. Ask for our ID when we order a drink.... The guests in there were nice but we left because it is comfortable being somewhere when you are so unwanted. If you are not a local, don't go here.

Andy's a rockstar! Stopped in here as front street was a night mare and was an awesome small town bar vibe. Loved this place and highly recommend for good drinks!

We found this place a few years ago on our annual vacation to Maui. We were looking for karaoke. We didn't find it here but we did find a great place on the low down. Friendly local people and a great place to hang out! Absolutely loved it. Always included in our annual trip now!!!

Been craving for a Mai Tai and found this place nearby the hotel we were staying at and with the good reviews, decided to stop by. Its a little tiny dive bar with mostly locals which was cool. Everyone was very nice and welcomed us. The bartender was very nice too with a good sense of humor and since its quite obvious we were tourist, he gave me my newby Sly sticker! Compared to surrounding bars, not only are they much more expensive but may taste like a virgin drink which makes you wonder if they even put any alcohol in it. If I pay for it, I expect a good amount of alcohol. This place won't cheat you on that and is definitely the place to be. Downfall: They don't serve food. I always like to snack on things while I have a few drinks with friends. Ok, maybe I like to eat a bunch of junk food while I drink with friends. So if you plan to stop by this place, go after dinner and simply hang out with drinks. (minus 1-star).

Asked a local bartender the best bars around town. He recommended a couple bars like Down the Hatch but I asked him that i was looking for more of a dive bar with locals. He said the Sly Mongoose is the place to be. Unfortunately due to covid they were only able to have 7 customers at a time. When I first arrived the place was at full capacity but two of the locals immediately got up to let me and my friend go in. All expectations were exceeded. Johnny is the absolute GOAT!!! All the locals were super talkative and made us feel at home. Seriously the highlight of my trip. Would have stayed all night but wanted to let some of the regulars take our spot.

I LOVE THIS BAR! Hmmm...Toby Keith's song says it all...Minus the mason jar's and the dance floor - although the latter does happen on occasion. But really, it isn't big enough to accommodate dancing. It's been labeled a dive bar, a gay bar, a hookah bar, and many other strange things. All are welcome! The bottom line is - it is a local bar - serving great drinks at a reasonable price, there is nothing fancy about the place, it's regulars or the drinks (no blender here!). We've got A/C, the beer is cold and everyone is friendly. The aloha is free. The patrons ARE the entertainment. It's a small town bar with small town values. It is off the beaten path and at first, the location may strike newcomers as sketchy, but this is Maui! Most of the surrounding businesses aren't open at night. Come on down, have a great time and surprise yourself!

After a very hectic day exploring the amazing views at the road to Hana, we were determined to party, well, because it was Saturday night and it is Maui!! We went to a couple of bars in Lahaina downtown and reached sly mongoose at 1am. The bartender was so welcoming and he was talking about his experiences and made us feel so comfortable. There were a couple of locals who also were very entertaining. Even though the place shuts at 1.30, the bartender was with us and celebrated till 2! It was the best night in Maui and the drinks were amazing! The only place with value for money cocktails and a cute place to hang out!!

Such a dive bar but if you want a chill time this is the place to go. The bartender is hilarious and won't make any "foo foo drinks," but says it with a smirk. Coolest shirt to bring back home from vacation too!

This is the best dive bar in town, unfortunately because of COVID seats are limited to 12, so get in where you fit in. Bartenders are friendly, locals are awesome.
