The last time we came to Hawthorne Asylum, we were having some food regrets by not ordering from here. So this was top on our list for our next visit and first place we ran to when we stopped in this morning. This food cart did not disappoint. There are so many waffle sandwiches to choose from. There’s really truly something for everyone. They even have vegan and gluten-free options. Are you looking for something sweet or savory? They have it all. We ordered the Holla and they let you customize. They have cheddar, smoked Gouda, Swiss and one other cheese. I’m not recalling at the moment but the point is they truly let you customize. The waffle is fairly thin, so it actually is something you can easily eat. I was worried the waffle would make it too thick. The flavor was phenomenal. The staff was super friendly and warmly greeted our puppy that was with us as well. We also ordered chai and some lattes and the drinks were also very good. Seating is all outdoors as this is a food cart so come prepared. There are several heated seating areas as well as covered areas with fire pits. This is a decent food truck option location, even for a rainy day, but even more magical on a sunshiny day. Dog friendly as well!! you’re craving waffles and the person you’re going is not… This is the perfect place because you can choose whichever food truck makes your heart happy.

Amazing waffle sandwiches! They have both sweet and savory options. All seem delicious. The staff is really friendly and the food comes out quick. I’ll be back

I'm so impressed with Smaaken in Hawthorne Asylum! I was providing brunch for an office with a variety of dietary restrictions, and Smaaken had something for everyone. Plus an amazing variety of both sweet and savory waffles. I placed a large order (14 sandwiches total!) for a meeting, and Ari whipped them up lickety-split. The meeting attendees said the sandwiches were delicious, and I'm so grateful for the fast and friendly service.

I got the gluten free BLT this evening, and it was so good! No extra charge for the GF option either. Can't wait to go back and try different sandwiches.

This place is located in Hawthorne Asylum food trucks hub. I had the Chicken BLT sandwhich, which also had Sriracha aioli on it that was such a great touch that worked well with the sweet waffle and wasnt greasy. Got an order of small waffle fries with chipotle ranch and those were good, I also had the hibiscus tea with some lemonade and that was sorta bland but the service, atmosphere and the food were great. This place just never disappoints! Came back and everything was fabulous.

Smaake is located in the Hawthorne region downtown inside of a walled off community of food vendors. The atmosphere here is. Very welcoming and inclusive, though can get crowded based on location and the great experience. The food is a pretty creative take on comfort breakfast foods and standard American fare. Due to it's popularity it can take a little longer for your food to be prepared, but it's well worth the wait. I would use this time to explore what else the food court has to offer or just hang by the available fire pits. There is some construction going on due to expansion inside the court, but it shouldn't interfere with your meal too much. Because this is located downtown, parking can be at a premium so plan accordingly. I recommend public transportation, or biking if possible.

Overrated. The food was only so-so. There was zero parking and we had to drive for miles to find somewhere to park. Someone recommended this place to us and I just felt myself frustrated and how crammed in everything felt. I get that it's down town so it's going to be busier and crowded, but the whole atmosphere and experience was simply not worth it. I definitely think they missed a golden opportunity to have "Chicken and Waffles"

I cannot count the number of times we've ordered delivery from here since my last review. We have had consistently delicious, high quality sandwiches every time. The club is one of our favorite savory ones. Pretty much every sweet one has been awesome. Their simple maple butter waffle is surprisingly good as well. Definitely recommend in person or for delivery.

Amazing food,the honey mustard was the perfect addition to this sandwich. The wait time was so quick and easy to order. And the nice cool air outside with the warm food was so perfect.

Delicious waffle sandwiches, with excellent vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, as well as plenty for the lucky among us who can eat anything they want. Inventive flavor combinations, both sweet and savory, and almost too many options to choose from. I've never left this spot disappointed.

We were on the Lost Plate Portland food tour and tried the Belgian Waffle with Jam, Lemon-Vanilla Bavarian Cream, and fresh coconut whipped cream (we requested dairy-free). The dessert was so good! The perfect mix of everything delicious. The waffle wasn't too sweet, which helped make the overall dessert perfectly balanced. Will return another time to try some of their savory options. Plenty of good seating at the Hawthorne Asylum and clean bathrooms.

So many ways to go and none of them are wrong. The chicken maple is a new favorite, I got that along with the monte cristo. The vegan sardou is good but really heavy, need to really be in the mood for that one. I highly suggest coming with someone and getting two different sandwiches and splitting it. Ambiance and service are 10/10. I will always make a stop here when I come to Portland.

Heck Yes!!! I had the Monte Carlo with Maple Butter * Housemade Raspberry Jam * Fresh Spinach and I can tell you this, it was amazing. I mean AMAZING. The waffle was gluten free and tasted just as i it wasn't. The homemade raspberry jam was superb. Maple butter... outstanding and gave it a unique much added flavor. Fresh spinach- you can't go wrong there. Overall, the blend of flavors with the sprinkled powdered sugar just made this sandwich out of the ball park delicious. I would recommend this place to anyone. The menu is so unique and you can do so much with it. Definitely give it a try. I don't think you will be disappointed. I sure wasn't.

This was outstandingly delicious! I ordered the Monte Cristo, and the combination of strawberry jam and powdered sugar was perfection. I tried to savor every bite, but it was just too delicious! Definitely come hungry and treat yourself to a Waffle Sandwich! Staff was so kind and helpful. Also ordered hibiscus iced tea which was great!

My friends...I don't understand this spot. My girlfriend got a vegan melt waffle Sando and it was so freaking sad. A tiny, store-bought sausage (menu says it contains tofu, ok, sausage instead?) with a literal sprinkle of vegan cheese. This is somehow in the "melt" category? There was nothing appetizing about this waffle. If you're vegan, go elsewhere.

Ate here yesterday morning after a date with a lovely lady kayak paddling just outside Portland - and it was perfect for us as we were soaked & half frozen (me from Hawaii / she San Diego).... This morning we had it delivered before I flew out to the houseboat she rented for the month and sadly not everything made it to the houseboat that our Uber Eats guy dropped off so I called to bitch - well not their fault / Uber driver ate my waffle in the way. A testament is just how good it is - coffee is fantastic too.

I came here the other day for lunch at Hawthorne Asylum. This place was by far my favorite because of the diverse flavor options. They also have a seasonal flavor too. I ended up getting the Bananas Foster. The bananas were caramelized perfectly. They have a huge variety of savory and sweet waffles. There can be signficant wait. This place was actually pretty good. You get a sandwich on a waffle. It was prepared fresh and took about 10 mins to come out. I had the sandwich with bacon, turkey, cheese and maple butter. My mom took a bight and said Yum. That's a win!

DO NOT COME HERE! Ordered the London fog and the lavender matcha only for them to fill it up too maybe 75% of the cup. Ordered the Van Gogh just for it to have hard and stale cheese along with the bacon. The smaaken was not good at all, the Brie to bacon ratio was horrible, the apples were subpar and were not soft OR flavorful, just apples with cinnamon and spice dumped on it, the raspberry truffle is a whole different story. the whipped cream doesn't even taste like anything, the raspberry jam is way too sour, and the chocolate is too heavy and strong. (so much for being a sweet waffle ) not too mention all of the waffles you order will be soggy and flat! Will definitely not be coming back here, and you shouldn't either. 1/5 stars.

They were the only food truck in the area open before 9, so we stopped by and I'm so glad that we did. We got the sausage maple, Beet Napoleon, and the Blue Moon and they were all delicious and so different from one another. Our kids especially loved the sausage maple, which reminded me of a gourmet McGriddle. Give this place a try!

Tried Smaaken Waffle in the Hawthorne Asylum Food Carts. So many waffle sandwiches to choose from. I had the Chicken Maple sandwich. I expect a larger piece of Chicken with my waffle. Very small pieces. But it was tasty.

This truck is located in Hawthorne Asylum, which is a great place to hangout and get a few drinks with your meal. The GM of the company served us. Super friendly and personable. The waffles themselves were great, the ingredients inside of the sandwich have mixed reviews from my partner and I. I got the sardou. Two bites in and I remembered that I'm really not a fan of spinach or artichoke lol. Not sure why I swung for this one knowing that, but I expected the topping to be more like a blended spinach artichoke dip. This was the case, but a bit too heavy on the cooked spinach portion, which I had to scrape off. The sandwich was markedly better afterwards. The portion of the spinach and artichoke mixture had great flavor, and the texture of the egg was light and fluffy, but not dry at all. My partner got the Monte Carlo. Once again, the waffle was fantastic. The raspberry jam as well. However, the meat was fairly dry and her sandwich pretty greasy. But overall, I enjoyed the experience and would recommend giving it a try. I would eat here again, but my partner prefers we head elsewhere for breakfast tomorrow so do with that what you will!

Great tasting sandwiches. Really big you can share. Fulfilling lunch. The Hawthorne Asylum had many choices but this place caught my attention and I'm glad because it was delicious from the waffle fries to the crispy waffle sandwich.

Amazing!: I recently visited this waffle place and was originally looking for crepes, but the lady there informed me that they were closed and that they sell waffles instead. I decided to give their waffles a try and was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of flavors available. I asked the lady to surprise me, and she was kind enough to give me a free waffle, which was the Blue Moon Lights flavor. I loved it! Overall, my experience at Waffle was great, and I'm already planning on returning.

Where has Smaaken been all my life? Well- right there, next to the Montage cart. But I was ignoring it. And thus, I got was I deserved. A lack of these wonderful waffle sandwiches! I've learned my lesson though. I'll be back to Smaaken Waffle Heaven... a lot. Plus it's fun to say. Smaaken. Smaaaaaaaaken. Say it with me. Smaaaken! Snackin on Smaaken. Had the Monte Cristo waffle sandwich with a side of waffle fries and chipotle dipping sauce. Very tasty sandwich. Service was great and took about 10 minutes to get food after ordering. Ambiance is typical for a food cart but there is a quiet spot to eat next to the food cart if you don't want to be close to anyone else. The food cart location is pet friendly as well. Utensils are compostable which is very much appreciated.

I came by the Hawthorne Asylum food trucks on a Friday morning at ~9:30am and was surprised to see nothing open except Smaaken. Although this may not have been my first choice for breakfast, I ended up very very satisfied with these delicious waffle sandwiches. I split the Smaaken and the Chicken Waffle with my SO. The Smaaken ($10) was by far my favorite! It came with Brie, spiced apples, maple butter, and thick cut bacon. It was so so tasty and all the flavors really complimented each other. Highly recommend!! The Chicken Waffle sandwich ($10.5) was also good and came with fried chicken, tomato, lettuce, and a spicy aioli. The chicken was very moist and the aioli was delicious. Overall, I'd recommend this place for solid breakfast/lunch food. There are tons of options on the menu to pick from, and both the ones we picked were yummy. The sandwiches were on the smaller size - I definitely expected them to be a little bigger and more filling since they're ~$10 each.

I'll start by saying I'm more of a pancake and french toast guy. Usually waffles at restaurants are underwhelming. With that being said, these are AMAZING! What We Had - Holla (bacon, egg, maple butter) - Smakken (brie, apples, bacon, maple butter) - 2 coffees (1 iced) Pros: - Maple butter! - Maple butter!! - Waffle sandwiches are just a much better creation than just waffles and fruit and whip cream. Cons: - The wait can be a while but they're popular and they have at least 4 waffle machines going. Overall: This is one of the top 3 waffle places in Portland. I wouldn't get waffles at many other places than here.

Holy crap what a good sammy! The waffle sammys from Smaaken are so tasty!! My wife had the bacon maple breakfast Sammy and I had the vegan Delight. My wife enjoyed hers and as a vegan I LOVED mine. It's so hard to find good places with options for both my wife and I so this was perfect. The vegan Delight was like an apple pie in my mouth and was soooo filling!!! You'll find these guys in the Asylum food pod, you won't regret it!!

This really is one of the most ridiculously delicious carts for vegetarians!!! The choices are so amazing it can be overwhelming so today I tried a simple grilled cheese and an iced lavender matcha. The Waffles had the maple butter melted in there with cheddar and a juicy tomato that had flavor. I didn't feel like I had a greasy food baby afterward either. Cannot wait to return my mission is to try everything on the menu

Ordered food from here and the sausage was not cooked. And when I say not cooked, I mean it y'all. Beware of the pink sausage here, unless you're into that

Ventured out early one weekend to try out a Smaaken Waffles vegan option. Honestly, I got it and thought, "What did I do?" It really looked ... blah. BUT it was actually really delicious. The waffle, as you can see is very thin which threw me, and the tofu was a little too thick for my liking (I prefer thinner and crispier, but that's a personal preference), but hot damn the lemon aioli and artichoke - WOW. They made the whole sandwich! Definitely recommend and would love to try more options. I got the Vegan Sardou (Fried Ota Tofu, braised Spinach & Artichokes with Vegan Lemon Aioli)

Friendly service, but small portion sizes for the price and not as great as I hoped for. The maple butter is delicious, but the waffle itself wasn't memorable. I'd try somewhere in the food carts first before coming back to this one again.

Our first visit to Hawthorne Asylum and a waffle sandwich just screamed my name! I got the Rembrandt with sausage, cheddar, and spiced apples. Great value. My only 2 wishes, the sausage had been a little spicer and a little more cheese. Pro tip? Ask for a side of maple syrup to dip. I would totally get this again!

Closed an hour early with 0 signage or anything. Such a bummer because we drove from across the river. Food is great but service wasn't great this night.

SSSSSSSSSMACK-en waffle! I ordered a monte carlo. This is the way to follow. Turkey is the bird, no swallow. Throw your hands in the air in greek. Ballo! Now, this is like thanksgiving in your mouth, but not during thanksgiving. We ought to be always giving thanks. And the monte carlo is one reason to. Each bite is savory. I think there could have been a bit more sauce to make the meat/waffle/sauce ratio to be perfect. So that is where I would give some minus points. I also would give some minus points in terms proportion of waffle to middle content. In this way, I would not give the full 5 stars. But man, well deserved 4 stars. On a good day, maybe even 4.5 stars, but rounding down because of the reasons I gave. Recommendation: Come back again and try something different. Monte Carlo was Yummmmy!

Really really hit the spot, dreaming of a good Belgium style -yes I know these are Dutch-(proofed )waffle these are thinner ( good for sandwiches!). Wait wasn't too bad actually/ it takes time to make waffles to order and that inevitable family of 5 in front of the line always slows things down... Minus one star for my order of the "sausage waffle" not coming with maple butter ( I guess I should have said " maple sausage waffle" but I thought maple butter was implied as there is only one sausage waffle ( with no trimmings). Anyhoo... the jamilicious waffles were as always delicious! I went home and added a runny egg to my sausage waffle and it was the perfect savory/ sweet plate for cravings...

I wanted to love Smaaken, but unfortunately, my experience convinced me otherwise. It's one of the more popular carts located in the Hawthorne Asylum. I have heard many good things from friends and I am a waffle-lover myself, so choosing Smaaken made sense. I ordered the Monte Carlo waffle (Turkey, melted Swiss, house-made Raspberry Jam, Maple Butter & Dusted Powdered Sugar). The estimated wait time for me was about 20-30 minutes. I ended up waiting closer to 50 minutes for my order. I did, however, enjoy the savory/sweet mix of flavors with this dish. One thing I am quite picky about is the temperature of my food. I didn't anticipate this waffle to be on the lukewarm/cold side. I think if it had been hot and fresh off of the stove, I would have loved it. Smaaken has great potential, but for now, I will be looking elsewhere when I visit the asylum.

Delicious! I got the Almond Joyous and enjoyed every second of it! My friends were amused by how much of the powered sugar I was wearing by the end. (I didn't pay attention and ate it upside-down.) I also got a Chai tea. Blue Lotus is now my favorite Chai brand! Spicy goodness! The chef was very friendly and quick with our orders. 10 out of 10! Will recommend!

I'm not sure what's up with the low reviews but from a gluten-free perspective, this place is fire! GF waffles or anything is normally dense and heavy. These waffles are the best I've had and as far as I remember, they taste similar to non-GF waffles. They are light and crunchy and oh so yummy!!!! I've normally gotten the sweet waffles like the Monte Cristo. All have been amazing. But this time I tried a savory waffle called the Windmill. I loved loved it. The same light crispy waffle stuffed with cheese, egg and a sausage patty. Amazing!!!! Love this place and will continue to come back! They have a pretty extensive menu so MANY MANY excuses to try them all! Parking: Street parking Venue: Food truck corner. Very clean. They have someone dedicated to cleaning the Food Truck tables constantly. Besides that, they have a vending machine where people can purchase masks. And they have a portable hand washing station. I felt very safe!

I got the seasonal chicken sandwich with marmalade and it was sooo good! I'm gonna be getting it all the time until they stop serving it!

The fried chicken sandwich options are pretty basic. If you're looking for a twist on chx and waffles this isn't going to satisfy that itch IMO. Other than that their menu is awesome, there's basically something everyone. Definitely recommend the lavender matcha (no milk).

I love the combination of bree apples & the waffle together. I will definetely be back to try another amazing combination soon.

I haven't actually been to their location, but rather have tried them multiple times at events. It is a little pricey, but we like to treat ourselves sometimes. These portions will definitely not fill you up, but more of a snack. We've tried dessert, which are good, but we prefer the savory varieties. The nice thing with the savory ones are that they use jams combined with meat and cheese, so it's still a little sweet. Although small (they use half a round waffle to make it) at least they don't skimp on fillings. You get a good taste of everything in each bite. I can also say that service has always been great. They're friendly and prompt when on location I can tell you that. It's definitely a nice splurge.

The sweet raspberry truffle waffle is very good. The flavors are distinct but not too heavy.

Sorry Smaaken, I've tried to give you a shot multiple times throughout the past year but every waffle and encounter with your staff has been lackluster. The last straw for me was when I was at the carts recently, Sunday lunchtime. The whole pod was buzzing with people. I stopped in front of Smaaken to order a Monte Cristo and waited. And waited. What was the server doing? On her phone an inch or two away from me, not even giving a side glance while I "ahem"'ed multiple times. I waited enough that I more or less had a full conversation with my dining companion. Eventually she turned my direction and got my order. Took my card without a word then just turned back around on her phone. The Monte Cristo? There was more jam in it than meat. If you want better waffles and service, please go over to Clinton or Hawthorne to those other waffle places.

This Place is Delish!!!! The selection is unbeeelievable!! Super creative with the waffle fries.. and Waffle Sandwiches and such.. YOU'LL DEFINITELY BE HAPPY ABOUT THIS ONE ..

Smaaken Waffle Sandwiches' idea of waffle sandwiches is so great. I got the Smaaken Sandwich which had brie, spiced apple, bacon, maple butter sandwiched between two crispy waffles. The combination of savory and sweet is everything I needed to satisfy my cravings. The crunch of the cinnamon apple, chewiness of the bacon, gooey brie, and crisp of the waffle was so satisfying. My friend shared it with me and it was a great snack to have just one half of the sandwich. We savored every bite. This food cart's seating area was particularly nice as it overlooked a cute street that had a few shops on the other side. There were plenty of seating options and even a restroom option that was not a porta potty (that's very important). A must try!
