Two More Beer Bars Permanently Close in the Wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic | Eater Portland

"I note that the downtown food cart Small Pharaoh posted a controversial sign — alongside standard 'seating for customers only' and 'no trespassing' notices it included lines such as 'Black lives matter. Muslim lives matter. All Lives Matter. Trump 2020' and 'F**k the racism, f**k the press, and f**k the media,' ending with a sarcastic barb at the city and the Health Department; this follows prior incidents in which owner Islam El Masry admitted to calling customers racial slurs twice, and Multnomah County shut the cart down earlier this year after at least four people came down with shigellosis (which causes severe diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain)." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

County Shuts Down Downtown Food Cart Small Pharaoh After Shigellosis Outbreak | Eater Portland

"I found that the downtown gyro cart Small Pharaoh has been closed by Multnomah County after an outbreak of shigellosis — not COVID-19 — and that the county called it the first food cart closure in many years due to health concerns. Four people from separate households were confirmed infected and three more are presumptive cases after dining at the downtown location between July 27 and August 11; health officials are asking anyone who ate there during that period and has symptoms to see a health care professional and to report possible illness at 503-988-3406. The cart’s owner, Islam El Masry, has a history of race-related incidents: in 2018 he was arrested for misdemeanor harassment and assault after throwing a Gatorade bottle at a Black customer and admitting in a now-removed YouTube video that he used a racial slur, and earlier this year he was again publicly accused of using a racial slur (which he admitted while saying he filed a police report against the customer); he could not be reached for comment." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Best falafel I've had! House made, hand pressed, gluten free and fried in their own fryer.

Fantastic food truck. Amazed that the food comes out identical to the menu picture. Tons of food and perfectly priced. Seasoning was spot on. Rice, meat, cucumber salad. Service was friendly and fast. Can't beat some quality Egyptian while enjoying eating outdoor.

My girlfriend and I recently moved to Portland and we wanted a night out. We came here by chance and received an exquisite meal, with an even better experience. Everything was so excellent that we came back two nights later. The owner recognized us immediately, further cementing the excellence of service, while also providing further excellence with the meal we received. Of note, my girlfriend has an egg allergy, which was catered to and even remembered the second time we went.

5 stars all around! I've been coming here for YEARS and will continue to do so! They have the best lamb Gyro in town and the best customer service. Seriously, I hunted them down when they moved locations and would do it again. Pro tip, the food is even better after a night in the fridge... if it lasts that long 😆

Good food cart in a large food cart pod. Good choices. Fast. My food was well presented and wrapped up to go.

Ordered multiple times, the food is great. I like the combo plate and beef rice the best.

We were downtown for the Starlight Parade with the kids and just happened to stumble upon the Midtown Beer Garden — what a lucky find! Tucked into this awesome little food cart pod in the heart of the city was Small Pharaohs, and let me tell you — it completely blew us away. From the moment we walked up, the team was warm, welcoming, and super friendly, especially with my kids (which as any parent knows, makes a huge difference). We ordered a mix of plates and wraps — the lamb over rice was packed with flavor, and the chicken shawarma was so juicy and tender my kids devoured it without a second thought. The garlic sauce? Next level. The vibe at Midtown was fun and family-friendly, with great energy from the festival crowd, and Small Pharaohs stood out not just for the food, but the service. It felt like they genuinely cared that we had a great experience — and we really did. This was one of those unexpected finds that turns into a new favorite. We’ll definitely be back next time we’re in downtown Portland. Highly recommend!
