The 16 Hottest New Restaurants in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

"Honeypie and Palomino co-owner Valeri Lucks brings a miniature version of her cool aesthetic to this little Oklahoma Avenue garage. The indoor-outdoor counter-service hangout is part cafe, part cocktail stop, part pigout destination, and is already a favorite among locals for its cheesy melts, big brownies, and the main draw: delectable, oil-glistening pies stuffed with fillings like Cuban pork, spanakopita, and yes, cheeseburger." - Todd Lazarski

Great sandwiches, cookies, and pie. The baguette is wonderful with a fluffy inside and a nice crispy crust. I tried the pepper turkey and chicken bacon ranch. The double chocolate cookie and lemon poppyseed were delicious!

I gad a great quick lunch. The turkey Sammie was outstanding. And the patio area is really beautiful.

Yes! I'm a big fan. I love the simplicity of this place and its warm, neighborly vibe. I live nearby, so it's incredibly convenient to have such a gem in the neighborhood. The menu isn’t huge, but that’s part of the charm. It changes frequently—even hourly at times—because everything is made fresh. You can really taste the quality. Their savory pies are consistently excellent, and the desserts are just as good. Honestly, I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on offer. There’s outdoor seating available, which makes for a nice spot to relax. Overall, this place continues to be a favorite.

Google
Cute spot on the patio, but hand pies are pricey. Food: got an herbed chicken hand pie thinking it would maybe be $6, $7…nope, $10. For a small pie. I understand it takes effort to make, but that’s pretty wild. Makes me think the demographic is old folks living off savings or wealthier bay view families. It will work for people that are willing to toss around Money. Service: younger folks doing their best. Atmosphere: nice patio where you can overlook all the plants for sale. Also indoor seating.

Google
Went in today around 3:45pm will full intention of getting a vegan cake slice. I wanted a sweet treat so badly and I was deciding between going to Whole Foods or small pie. I decided on small pie because I usually try to buy local/small. I had my mind made up on flavors before I even got there as I called beforehand to find out what they were. Upon entering the store I looked at the slices and realized the one I didn’t plan on getting looked better. So, I asked the employee which one was better. She didn’t like either of them. As much as I appreciate honestly, you lost a customer. I turned around and left because there were no other vegan options and the employee had nothing good to say about the product. The only reason I left any stars is because I’ve had something from there before that I liked when I had been one other time. However, the other time the service was sub par too though. I’m usually a good review kind of person, but I haven’t really had any good experiences here and I likely won’t be back.

Very nice quint place to stop, have been past in a few times and thought I would stop, nice pleasant staff and excellent pies, next time will try their food, a must stop

Google
Breakfast sandwiches are great! Door County hand pie simply the best! Can’t wait to return. Beautiful outside sitting area.

Yelp
I'm not even a pie guy. But even I know an excellent pie when I see one. And if they got your name in the title, as was the case with the Door county cherry pie we had from here, then you know it's gone be good. And it was. Everyone should try this...

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick lunch to go. Overall I like the location, ambiance, food, and staff. They were friendly and pointed me to the food menu when I looked confused trying to find it. I grabbed a turkey pepper sandwich, 12 oz iced chai latte, and slice of key lime pie. The only reason I'm docking a star is the pricing. Those three items costed $30 and I do not think that's justified. The food was great, don't get me wrong. I think maybe if the sandwich came with chips or a side or everything was a couple bucks cheaper, I would come back more often.

Yelp
Came here because YELP actually published a "best pie in every state" list while we were in Milwaukee, so of course we had to come try it. We got 3 slices for $26, a fruit one, a french silk, and a milwaukee mud pie. Pros: - Prices may seem steep, but the pie slices are HUGE. Also the french silk and mud pie were DELICIOUS - I even ate the rest of the mud pie the next morning and the taste still really held up. This place is literally a hidden gem. It tasted exactly like the best version of what I expected out of each pie. - Despite a very humble space, the outside area is very chill to take a bite of pie in - The service was very efficient - Has a bathroom - Not too busy, fast staff response 10/10 would come back to Milwaukee for this, probably my favorite thing we ate during our trip!

Yelp
I wish I wasn't in a rush or watching calories because EVERYTHING looked delicious. I had a breakfast Sammy and it was delicious. The fresh herbs, the thick bacon and the heavenly croissant made for a great start to my day.

Yelp
Small Pie is a cute little space with a small outdoor patio when weather permits to have delicious treats and bakery. We ordered a pie online for pick up as a gift for our daughter and hubby for their 3rd anniversary. It worked out super easily and well. The gals were kind and friendly at the store and our pie was ready to go at the pick up time. We also purchased a gift card as a gift for a future pie. This was warmly received and super delicious. If you're looking for a unique and sweet special (as the pies are costly , but made with quality ingredients) gift for someone- consider one of their pies. YUM!!!!! There isn't a lot of parking availability. But, you'll manage. :) If you are elderly or can't walk far- maybe look into being dropped off so you can sit outside and enjoy your bakery - or inside. The seating is limited inside and it is small inside. But then you can look at the pretty case of desserts and think about your next visit.

Yelp
I had no idea SmallPie was a subsidiary of Honeypie which is closer to our home. Located in a hidden commercial pocket of Bay View, SmallPie is housed in a cute transformation of a gas station. My wife and I walked in and oohed and aawed at the cookies and pies on display. I tried to joke and kibitz with the two women working this warm Thursday morning in February, but they didn't like me. No smiles, warmth, or interaction was forthwith. They were all business. We purchased a bunch of stuff: 5 slices of pie and at least 4 cookies. Prices were very high, but the slices were big. SmallPie ain't cheap. My chocolate chip cookie was good, but the Toffee cookie was great. My favorite pie was pistachio. Chocolate pie let me down. In summation, the baked goods were well made and enjoyable, but the price point might cause me to hesitate. I wasn't in pie ecstasy. The lack of engagement by the staff wasn't encouraging. My sense of self needs positive reinforcement. Milwaukee used to be much friendlier. Tribalism isn't good for mental health.

Yelp
A great little spot to grab lunch in Bayview I recommend the chorizo and potato hand pie Dogs allowed

Yelp
Great spot to get some delicious treats for brunch or when having a sweet tooth. They have different pies and pastries that are all worth it. Different flavors for anyone, including vegans. They do have great service, they answer the phone and are polite. When you go in person they great you and make sure you're getting the correct items that you want. They have different crafts beers and wines. Ambiance is pretty cool and chill. Lots of locals so by that are walking their dogs. So get your dessert before they run out of it. Stopping by again.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Their website posts all the pi's that you an try when there, but when I stopped by and sat outside, which was nice with area for dogs, there was no pie to choose from other than just two or three in the case. This was about lunch time in early fall. I was disappointed.

Yelp
Everything was so good! Cute outdoor space. Loved the sandwiches & pie was also great. Would definitely recommend for a lunch or snack!

Yelp
I am a loyal SmallPie fan - their herb chicken hand pie is a buttery breakfast treat and their sweet pies are delicious too. We love the gas station breakfast sammy as well if you're looking for a salty/sweet mix. I appreciate the beautiful native plants on their patio and the indoor/outdoor seating options. We often get some coffee to go along with our pies. The food at SmallPie has always been fresh and delicious and the quality is always excellent. I feel very lucky to have such easy access to this restaurant in the neighborhood!

Yelp
A cute little pie and coffee/tea joint. Huge garage doors that could open to a patio with seating - alas it was cold and icky the day we went so we had just dream of returning in the summer. The pies were great. The coffee was from Anodyne and was nice and roasty and dark. Service was attentive and friendly. All around great place to get a snack or dessert.

Robyn K.

Yelp
I loveddd this place when it opened, but the last few times I went it was pretty disappointing. My last visit I got a slice of pie, a handpie and a coffee for almost $30. I'm willing to pay that for something quality, but it was all fairly mediocre. My husband said the handpie was small and very dry. The cold brew was insanely sweet and not worth $9. The most disappointing was the pie. I've always loved their pie but the portions and toppings are smaller than in the past and they've raised the price again. Also very little variety. The staff is always incredibly friendly, but move slow and have little knowledge about the products. (they had 3 different variations of chocolate pies that looked the same and no one knew what the difference was). Overall just not worth the price.

Bryana T.

Yelp
SmallPie has the cutest outdoor patio and best pies EVER. Literally ever. If you like pie come here. They also have sandwiches they are good and other cafe items. The people who work there are always friendly and accommodating. The neighborhood is lucky to have it--and my dog loves sitting outside too!
google avatar

Yelp
Always great service and I love the rotating selection of pies. Everything I've tried so far has been delicious!

Yelp
A lovely conversion of an old service station into a neighborhood cafe with quality coffee and a nice assortment of food and other beverages. I opted for a breakfast hand pie. A perfectly flaky crust with a tasty hash brown and sausage stuffing. The staff was extremely friendly and efficient. The price point was spot on. Even if you are not in the neighborhood like we were, it would be worth turning off the main thoroughfare (Kinnickinnic) to stop by.

Yelp
I go here for desserts and the cherry limeade. The latter is so delish - can't think of anything I've had like it outside of Door County! I've tried the sandwiches and don't love them. Really the desserts are the star - you can pre-order pick-up orders here, which is great for a party. The best pie that's always on the menu is the chocolate cream - TRY IT! If there's a line, it will move quickly. Folks are always nice when I'm ordering or picking up. When I do come here to eat something, their patio is LOVELY - awesome spot to catch some rays and drink coffee. Or that cherry limeade (real cherry juice)

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Nestled on an island in bay view this hidden gem is one to check out . The pie selection is to die for. I ordered the blueberry lemon pie online and it was ready when promised. Easy pick up process and loved checking out the displayed bakery. Will be back !

Yelp
This was a nice surprise - great spot for baked goods! We were driving by and I noticed the sign and thought it'd be great to try. We had the following items: -Milwaukee Mid Pie -Triple Chocolate Cookie -Chocolate Chip Cookie The mud pie was excellent - rich and chocolatey, enhanced by the different textures...I appreciated how the bitterness of the chocolate balanced out the sweetness of the pie. The cookies were great too - moist, buttery, sweet, but with a nice saltiness. The quality of their treats is first-rate and you can tell they only use the best ingredients. I'd definitely visit this spot again.

Yelp
I just love SmallPie. Their handpie are amazing. The mushroom one is great, I'm a big fan of the breakfast hoepple popple ones, and today I had the spring roll one. It had a nice kick! Might be my new favorite! The Girl Scout Lemon pie is the pie of the month - go get it! So refreshing and good. In addition to ours, they have delicious bars and brownies. All these treats can be enjoyed to go or on their patio. They also do their own delivery and curbside pick up. Highly recommend going here. I've been here twice in the past seven days!

Yelp
I spent spring, summer, and part of fall biking past this adorable little pie shop/cafe on Oklahoma in Bayview looking longingly at the line in front, but just never getting around to stopping. The area always feels new england-y and vacation-y to me, with the lake so close and lots of cottages and tree lined streets. Fast forward to a cold Halloween afternoon...I scanned the online menu early in the morning before my ride figuring it would be quieter due to the weather. By afternoon when I got around to going, the online menu had shrunk quite a bit - as others mentioned they run out of stuff. I went with cookies and cream pie and holy cow did it not disappoint. It was a vanilla pudding with a cookie crust , covered with whipped cream and more cookie crumbs. The pie was really good so I'm going with 5 stars...that being said I hate to again be "that person" but I thought it was kind of expensive. There's a $1.5 "convenience charge" to order online so after the $7.5 slice, $1.5 charge, tax and tip, it was an 11 or 12 dollar slice of pie. I know I'm sounding grumbly and the pie was delicious, but the convenience fee for ordering online seemed excessive. All that said, adorable pie shop in Bayview :)

Yelp
I love this place. It's walkable from my house, there are plenty of choices for food and drink, and it's dog friendly! During covid they have been great about keeping people safe. My only complaint is that my vegan partner rarely has an option. Some vegan hand pies sure would be appreciated so we can both eat something warm! The dog always gets a biscuit and I really hope they're able to make it through the winter. Much love you guys.

Yelp
Food is delicious. It is our go to place for a fast-casual breakfast, especially on a nice day. The patio area is great. Staff are nice!

Jeannette H.

Yelp
Their pies are delicious. Their menu is spotty. Gone there several times and they were out of most everything on the menu. Go get a pie but don't depend on them for a meal.
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
Gas Station breakfast sandwich was great. Went for lunch and had quick and friendly service. More of a pick up spot though.

Bill A.

Yelp
Excellent savory pie! I had the Herbed Chicken. Delicious! Moist filling and beautifully caramelized, flaky crust. Very friendly and professional staff. It will be a new addition to my food selection options.
google avatar

Yelp
Smallpie is one of our favorite places to go on a weekend morning, especially if the weather is good and we can sit outside. Whether you are craving savory or sweet, smallpie has you covered. We will often get a savory hand pie or quiche for breakfast and take a slice of delicious sweet pie home for later. Plus they have pilcrow nitro cold brew and rishi tea! The crusts of their pies are flaky perfection and the insides are always delicious. I have not had anything from smallpie that I did not enjoy to the fullest.
google avatar

Beca M.

Yelp
We got two different kinds of hand pies which were a Cuban and a sausage hash brown. We also got a cherry limeade. Both handpies were very good. I love the crust which is very flaky and delicious. Our limeades were the perfect combination of tart and sweet. They were very COVID safe with everything outside and ordering at a window. The wait time was not bad even though it was busy!
google avatar

Hernani A.

Yelp
Yeeees, yes for the cuban pie, so good! I wish they'd answers the phones when you want to place an order though... and need to carry more pies, sometimes I go and they are out of the best ones! I love this place, go at least twice a month.

Yelp
Partaking in this year's socially distanced Pumpkin Pavilion meant driving around Bay View, admiring the spooky Halloween scenes in stranger's front yards. From simple to outrageous, the nighttime drive looped around displays of cobweb-laden trees, ominously-lit houses, and a variety of faux graveyards. We were driving around the backstreets, getting a little lost, until I recognized one of the shops on Delaware Avenue. "Oh hey, that's the main road up ahead... You want some SmallPie?" At night, SmallPie's little shop glows like a beacon, shining the way to sweet and savory baked treats in Bay View. It's impossible not to be lured in for a quick treat or meal when you're on Oklahoma Avenue. The food is delicious but humble enough that eating it on the couch or pairing it with New Glarus doesn't feel demeaning. You know? Flaky and filling, they have a good variety of vegetarian and non-veg options. I've gotten both the black bean and the Spanikopita (spinach pie) options, and I really can't decide my favorite! Although we almost never eat on the couch, the feel of a handpie is so comforting, that it felt right to sit in the dark and watch some TV, munching on our dinners. Sometimes, you just can't break the moment bothering to try to take a better photo of some really delicious food. Besides our savory handpies, we also couldn't not be tempted by the sweets on display. Both employees passionately praised the Pumpkin Maple Cake when I asked about it, so I chose a square of that, while Caleb got a thick slice of Milwaukee Mud Pie, dark brown, decadent, and rich. Either one could have been shared among 3 people, but we just saved the extras for later. And I'm so glad we did. I thank myself later whenever I remember to savor a dessert as delicious as that Pumpkin Maple Cake. Visit SmallPie for the holidays and anydays. They're open early and deliver too!

Yelp
This has been a great go-to during the pandemic as the ordering process and outside seating has been such a great system. My absolute favorite thing here is the cheese and apple melt - gouda, apple slices, spinach and a ranch dressing. I could eat it every day. The pie availability changes each day and depending on the time you visit, but I've loved the Mexican "hot" chocolate pie and pistachio. You really can't go wrong.

Rachel S.

Yelp
Very cute and high quality place. They were maybe short staffed when I arrived and a seemed a bit disorganized. I can tell the neighborhood supports them and they are really busy. I bought as many varieties as interested me and only enjoyed two of them. I'm still happy to have supported this amazing business! If I am back in the area I would get a cherry hand pie and a cup of coffee and enjoy the outdoor seating.
google avatar

Rosalie C.

Yelp
#vegan options cute spot, little outside seating. the cherry vanilla floats are so good!! the cake pieces are HUGE. please share haha. looking forward to trying some more options soon.
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
I want so much to give it a better review. The plus side is good tasting pies for the most part. Downside, they are always either sold out or almost sold out. We went today about 1:30PM and the majority of the pies are sold out. They should be replenishing throughout the day. I realize business is down with winter but it will soon be picking up with Spring and Summer. A few times we have just walked out and went somewhere else because they were just out of pies. They should know their demand by now since they've been open nearly a year.
google avatar

Cathy D.

Yelp
I stopped to get pie slices for dinner. Called ahead to reserve. Really wonderful. We had one apple Carmel and two berry.
google avatar

Evelyn L.

Yelp
7:45a on Sunday morning, not busy yet! The concept of small size pies is a great idea. You can have one or two of sweet or savory pies without worrying about the filling of the pie runs off when sliced. Since every pie is made from scratch, I was really impressed with the quality of the flaky pie shell! They are able to heat up the pies on site so you have the choice of having a warm pie in your hand shortly. The only downside of this place is that they don't have a coffee bar so you can only settle for some speciality coffee pot options. They also have some other interesting teas, floats, beers, and boozy drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
I've long been awaiting the opening of Small Pie. It's sister restaurant, HoneyPie, is one of my favorites in Milwaukee. And I'm always on the lookout for a great, from-scratch savory pie, which are harder to come by in our part of the world. My first visit to Small Pie was only a few days after it opened. Honestly, I was not very impressed. It seemed to me as though they were not entirely prepared to open. There was no signage AT ALL, which obviously made it difficult to decide what I wanted to order. In addition, the staff seemed very stressed and the lady who took my order was not especially friendly. I ordered the cherry pie, and it was...fine. Just fine. However, I decided to give them a few weeks to work things out before writing a review. Today I went back to Small Pie. I was there at around 1:30pm on Sunday, and there were only a few other people there besides me, so I was able to walk right up to the counter. This time, the staff was MUCH friendlier. And there were signs everywhere! Hooray! I decided on the veggie parmesan pie. Oh. My. Goodness. It was perfect. Truly perfect. The crust was flaky and buttery. Inside there were potatoes, squash, and of course, parmesan. It was warm, flavorful, and just the right size. I also ordered a mini blueberry loaf, which, like last time, was just...fine. I think that in a couple of months, Small Pie will have worked out all of the bumps in the road, and can really establish itself as a go-to Bay View destination. Personally, I will 100% be returning for that veggie parmesan pie! Bottom Line: Savory beats sweet at this up and coming bakery!
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
I wanted to give Small Pie some time to work through the first week growing pains before reviewing. To say I was excited when I heard about the concept of Small Pie was an understatement. I already love Honey Pie and a slice of any one of their pies is a go to when my sweet tooth strikes. What's not to love with even smaller pies that come in the savory variety as well? I was pleasantly surprised to see improved signage and efficiency on my second visit. There was actually a printed menu and most items in the bakery case were labeled this time, yay! They also have seemed to figure out having multiple people behind the counter taking the lead on different tasks (prepping drinks while someone else takes the order). When I walked in today there was already a line of 8 people but my order was taken in about 10 minutes, not bad! I have to say I was very sad when the last Cuban hand pie was ordered by the person two in front of me. I ordered this in my first visit and really enjoyed it! The mustard and pickle flavors really came through and I had it on my mind for the past week. Today it was not meant to be, I had to settle for the cheeseburger hand pie. It was good, a bit dry. When I added ketchup it was much better. Since this is a bakery you have to be prepared for heartbreak and the later in the day you go the fewer options you will have. However, the savory hand pies are great and the mini sweet pies are just as good as honey pie. The patio is lovely as is the wide assortment of coffee drinks, soft drinks, and wines in a can. I am really glad to see the first week bumps beginning to be ironed out, and even happier to see that in both of my visits (and just driving by) there is always a crowd. Keep on supporting this new, fun option Milwaukee!

Yelp
Soft opening of this bakery cafe. Everything looks great! I should have taken a receipt today to share details. 2 Jalepeno Cheddar Bagels 2 Scallion Scones 1 Green Olive Focaccia, comes with side $23 We bought a Peach Pie, 8" is $8 from the patio. They were selling Bourbon Peach Tea too. They have fruit vendor selling peaches and blueberries outside. 4 lbs Peaches $10 They have sandwiches and salads and other sweets like Brownies and Hand Pies $5. They are definitely enough for two to share.
google avatar

Margaret R.

Yelp
Stopped by for a sweet treat since they are nearby and to give them a second chance. I ordered a Door County cherry hand pie. Where do I begin... Service was terrible, the staff was not friendly, disinterested. Took them forever just to hand me the hand pie. They moved at a snail's pace, zero smiles or thank you's. Yikes. The pie was even worse. How come a pie shop can't make decent pie crust?? This is literally what you should be best at. The cherry filling was pretty good, but the crust was tough, greasy and inedible. I can only recommend their cream pies with graham cracker crust, those are the items they make well.
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
Nestled in a residential area of Bayview, Smallpie is an offshoot of the beloved Honeypie, offering a variety of pies, bagels, bakery items, and salads. It absolutely transformed an old gas station into a modern cafe with a lovely patio. The quality is just what you would expect from Honeypie too! They also serve both Anodyne and Pilcrow coffee as well as Wisconsin alcoholic staples: Bloody Marys and Old Fashioneds. I'll be back!
google avatar

Ivan W.

Yelp
Sitting on a small wedge in the road is this delightful shop. We just a couple slices of cream and a coffee to go. No inside dining currently but plenty of outside seating with the return of good weather. Quiche and fresh fruit pies round out menu. Give this place a try. unique.
google avatar

Marisa N.

Yelp
Very well set up for social distancing. Loved the sunrise melt but they were out of eggs when I came so I got the gas station Sammy. Not a fan of the chicken sausage (I'm not a big fan Of sausage to begin with) but wow the apricot jam and bacon was delicious. The baguette also really makes it.

E N.

Yelp
I've tried all of their cream pies. A little pricey but they give you a pretty large slice. They use to have a punch card where you could get a free slice eventually but they stopped that so I guess its even more expensive. The pies were good and had unique flavors but the pies that have a plain white cream are not sweet enough. If you just taste the white cream it's almost like they don't add any sugar. Another annoyance is when I get pie to-go. They seem to be very sloppy when getting a clean slice out into a container. Almost everytime, it looks like a mess. One time, they even gave me the wrong flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
Small Pie is a sweet little pie shop on the edge of Lake Michigan and a stone's throw from South Shore Park. They serve hot and cold drinks, mini sweet and savory pies, and other delicious fare. Their dining room is white, minimal, small and cute and in the summer they open up their patio to offer more seating under the shade of big white umbrellas! If you're feeling savory, I highly recommend the sausage hash brown hand pie, the cheese steak hand pie or one of their quiches. If you want something sweeter I can't recommend the pecan pie enough. It's sweet without being cloying, creamy, nut-filled and delicious. Yum! My perfect summer morning is a walk along the lake with a friend followed up with a bite to eat at Small Pie. Give it a shot one of these days!

Josh O.

Yelp
We've lived over in this area for about two years. We have always drove past this little pie shop. We decided to try it today and we're just flat out disappointed. We tried the banana cream pie with a chocolate bottom , blueberry lemonade pie, a cookies and cream pie, and triple chocolate cookie, and all three tasted like they barely had any sugar or flavor. For $7.50 a slice we expected it to be more.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
Tip: Smallpie has WiFi! If your on AT&T you'll appreciate this Oasis in the middle of a dead zone desert. The sandwichs alone would earn this place a 5 star and on a list of best sandwiches in the city. I recommend the turkey pepper melt.
google avatar

Yelp
This coffee cafe is a hidden treasure. The shop is homey and full of yummy choices. I tried their Strawberry Lemonade pie with a cup of Anodyne coffee (pie blend). Sadly after 6:30 pm the coffee was not fresh and did not compliment the pie. The pie was a refreshing summertime delight which I enjoyed in their patio. Their outdoor area is beautifully landscaped. And their team was especially friendly and you can tell they like where they work. I will come back for sure.

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
Awful. I Got a sausage, hash brown & cheese croissant for almost $10.00. Not buttery; just plain greasy; neither the sausage nor hash browns were "browned." Even my dogs wouldn't eat it. No muffins or coffee cake, just pies that have probably sat there for God knows how long. I would have been happier with a biscotti & a few shots of expresso from Starbucks.
