Wares, the Zipper’s Eclectic Asian Restaurant, Will Close - Eater Portland

"Ware originally developed her reputation at a restaurant in Beaumont, the original Smallwares. In 2016, Ware closed that restaurant, but quickly announced plans to open a more casual version called Wares. After around a year and a half of Wares, Ware was given the opportunity to reopen Smallwares in a new space on Fremont. When she finds someone to take over her lease, Ware plans to introduce lunch a few days a week at her other Fremont restaurant. The chef is considering adding more of the Wares menu to Smallwares lunch, but she’s also playing around with a completely different schtick. “I know people want variety, so I’m thinking we could do Wares food — ramen and rice bowls — but also slutty chicken parm sandwiches,” she says, but she’s not totally committed to that plan just yet. “It’s a fun model, but we want to see what works.” Lunch isn’t the only remnant from Wares; Ware plans to bring a seasonal ramen to Smallwares as well, now that she’s leaving behind the original ramen counter. “It’s kind of like, which child do you choose?” she says. “Smallwares is my heart, so I’m like, let’s just contain it into one place.”" - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Excellent meal and great service. Most of the food was amazing, and the one thing we didnt like they took back with a smile. Smallwares mostly serves small plates intended for sharing, and they pack a lot of flavor into each plate. Be warned, their chef really loves cilantro, if you do not like this herb you might want to stay away.

This place is so good! We had the chef's tasting menu for the table. One in our party had dietary restrictions and they were accommodating while making sure we got what we paid for. Cocktails were delicious. Serve was fantastic. All around great experience

Decent place. The food I had was good. The tequila drink was decent. Not strong. Mostly tasted like the hibiscus tea that was in it. One weird thing about the drink is that they used worm salt on the garnish orange.

If you ever went to the original small wares off fremont, you'll be happy to know a smaller spot is now open with their fantastic fried kale (the only kale I ever eat on purpose is here). EVERYTHING is great here, which makes it difficult to order but luckily the small plates almost allow you to order most of what you want.
