As someone who's always down to try the newest and best burgers in town, I was excited to get to Smash City. On fathers day, I saw that they were out at Freehouse Brewing which has great outdoor picnic table area and beautiful views of the river. Everything on the short menu sounded great, but I was drawn to the Surf and Turf. It was their double patty burger done up the same way, but with the addition of shrimp on top. My friend got the Irish bastard without the slaw which was a single patty, but also had a slice of corned beef and was served on a pretzel but instead of a potato roll.
I do wish they had something more creative for sides. I know many of the trucks don't do fries cause it's a P.I.T.A. on the truck and they like to keep it simple, but something more exciting than chips would be great. I will say the chips were local kettle chip with fun flavors and the spicy pimento cheese and fried pickle flavors were tasty. I'm gonna get my only other gripe out of the way right now and it's that my friends burger came with chips and mine did not. The prices are already steep so to pay $15 for a burger and then $3 for chips and another $3 for a soda plus tax and tip, my meal got pretty pricey. A burger at a high end steak house on King street is $16 and even that comes with fries.
Now back to the burger... it was excellent. For smash burgers I would say it's definitely in the top five in town. It has a nice crunch on the edges, and the seasoning is just right. I really enjoyed their sauce and keeping it simple with just onions and cheese. Honestly, I liked it so much I thought about getting another to go. I then recalled a special they had on the board which was a fried bologna sandwich with cheese, pickles, and jalapenos. I knew I had to try the burger, but that box has been checked so I got the bologna to go and ate it later that evening (no judgement please). It was so damn good too. I don't know if I can recommend it over the burger, but if you've had the burger, this is a great backup. Definitely track down this truck if you're a burger fan and I'll be back for sure.
