Yelp
I was extremely disappointed with the woman working at the Philadelphia airport Smashburger on Sunday, April 21, 2024. Needles to say the airport can be stressful at times. Especially when one is hungry and all dining establishments are closing. I was desperately looking for something for my daughter and I after a long 4 day volleyball tournament. One I arrived at the airport I checked the information from my phone (which may have needed updating) but the closure noted 10:45pm. I headed towards Smashburger about 8:50 from Gate A4 and arrived at Gate A24 where it was located at approximately 9:05pm. Out of breath slightly before I could say anything the woman at the desk said, "We closed." She never looked up while she stood at the register. I asked, "Is there a reason the information says you close at 10:45pm?" Again, she never looked up. I asked, "Is there anything else open?" After about a 45 second delay of silence she glanced up and said, "I'm counting." Looked back down and never looked up again. She never said anything else as I stood and awaited a response. With her head down, she continued doing what she was doing. She never acknowledged my presence again, and never answered my question. There is a way to say we are closed kindly and express whether or not you may know if there is something else available to eat. Customer service positions of all kinds do require a willingness to assist, some tact, compassion, and empathy when applicable. I'm not a frequent customer of Smashburger, but my daughter was very excited to eat there. While she waited with our bags I ran to grab her food. We were both exhausted and ready for our 6 and half hour flight back home. I understand that it is definitely unfair to judge your establishment off one bad interaction but that's exactly what horrible service does. I am in disbelief that anyone with her attitude has a job that requires interactions with customers. Perhaps she requires more training or a different position in which she does not have to interact with people who may have had a bad day. Sometimes good food can be just the prescription to making someone's day better. It could also be the friendly person serving it with a smile. She is ABSOLUTELY NOT that person! I would never take my family of 10 to a place where people treated them like this.
