The 13 Best Bar & Restaurants In Manayunk

"You can truly break a marathon-level sweat walking around Manayunk. At least when biting into a beef shawarma sandwich at Smiley Cafe, you can feel like you’re getting a shiny medal at the end. The Mediterranean restaurant and smoothie shop has a long menu of veggie sandwiches like grape leaves with baba ghanoush and meat-filled options like a beef gyro layered with a creamy tzatziki sauce (all for $15 and under). It’s ideal when you want to start your day with a smoothie or a lunch that’s a switch-up from all the pizza shops, bars, or general crowds nearby. " - candis mclean

Amazing atmosphere. It was my first time trying a Gyro and it was DELICIOUS. My smoothie was so good and refreshing. That garlic sauce is something else ❤️❤️ The pita is so fresh and the Tzatziki is AMAZING. I also fall in love with Hummus. It was also my first time trying it. All those years wasted in my life. Without hummus, I can say that I will definitely be coming back for all!❤️ The customer service is so warm and very good.

Google
Probably the best Middle Eastern falafel or pulled chicken platters we ever had! The hummus was pretty tasty, the included sauces are excellent and the variety of vegetables included was good too. We paid about 13-14 each. The tzatziki I didn't feel was that great (I would've liked it better if there was more cucumber/yoghurt, it tasted more like cream cheese). Staff was friendly. I'd recommend this for take out for sure.

Google
A hidden gem in Manayunk. Really good Mediterranean food. I was able to try both the chicken and beef schwarma and each one was tender and well-seasoned. The tzatziki and garlic sauce were the perfect condiments to add extra flavor. The hummus and pita were fresh. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Tropical Craze smoothie. Definitely worth adding that on to your order. The owner was extremely friendly and was working hard to make sure we enjoyed our meal. Smileys is a must stop!

Google
Wow, 😳. We chose this spot for the highly rated reviews, maybe we were here on an off day. Tiny little spot with a few 2 seat tables and bar stools. Food was just ok. Falafel was decent but had a sweet cinnamonish note? We had a wrap and a platter. We are most of each but were left wondering about the ratings. The pita seemed old and stuck to the wrap paper.

Google
Smiley Cafe is a warm and cozy place the food is excellent the smoothies were delicious and the customer service was a 10/10 Paris was polite kind he understood what I wanted.

Google
Smiley and his family are some of the kindest people you will ever meet, and they make some of the best food you will ever eat! I had the absolute pleasure of eating at Smiley’s today and chatting with the friendly family. I’ve had a lot of falafel in my day, this was hands down THE BEST falafel sandwich I have ever had, and it was HUGE! The pita was fresh made and so delicious, the toppings and falafel bags were perfect, and the tahini was so flavorful! They also make incredible smoothies! Everything is priced very affordable and the portions were huge. Please support this small family owned business!!!!

Google
My friend brought me to this restaurant because he had a lasting impression of the place! He did not let me down, the Beef Shwarma sandwich was so fire. The strawberry lemonade is made fresh per order and was delicious. The owner was nice enough to serve us extra falafel she made and talked to us and made us feel at home! Would def come back for that shwarma and smoothie!!

Google
Amazing customer service and very friendly ppl! I ordered the beef gyro platter that came with a salad, and hummus. I also had a side of falafel with the Orange Passion smoothie. The gyro was flavorful and came in a thin and crispy pita. It was very flavorful yet it wasn’t heavy on me. The falafel came with a salad and was also flavorful. The smoothie wasn’t overwhelming sweet and tasty. Everything was fresh and you can tell it was homemade. I can’t wait to come back!

Errett Van N.

Yelp
Fresh and delicious! I recommend the chicken shawarma, falafel, and fresh lemonade!! We also received friendly service and the smoothie was delicious!

Yelp
Newly renovated restaurant with 2 booths for seating. I came on a hot day and the AC wasn't really running well so it was still quite hot inside. I ordered the falafel sandwich and it comes with falafel smashed, tomato, lettuce, onion, and hummus. It was nothing special or notable; tastes just as expected! We asked for hot sauce on the side expecting something like the red sauce from halal carts but sadly it tasted just like Tabasco. I felt the strong vinegar taste did not pair well with the Mediterranean food. It was decent for the value but I'm not sure I would necessarily look to come back if I was in the area. Service was decent and food came out quick.

Yelp
Affordable quick stop for some gyros or shawarma. We got the beef gyro and falafel sandwich, which were bigger than I was expecting for the price (about $11 and $10, respectively)! Their only seating is two booths in the front section of the restaurant. Otherwise, its counter-service take out style. Service was prompt and polite. For the price, I would recommend it. Might consider coming here on a cooler day, since the AC wasn't that strong on the 90 degree evening we decided to try it.

Yelp
Hungry for lunch in Manayunk and checked out yelp for a suggestion of somewhere we hadn't been before. Smileys Cafe was close by! The woman working there greeted us with a friendly smile We were however, the only ones there. My dh ordered a gyro and I got a falafel plate. They took a little while but fine for a lunch wait. Inside, it's not a place of great ambiance and unfortunately, when our very tasty food did arrive, it comes in styrofoam containers with plastic wrapped plastic folks. This is likely more of a takeout spot which is why it was empty. Solid choice for food but too many options abound for me to go back and create more waste.

Yelp
One of our favorite take out places in Manayunk! Always amazing food and the smoothies are very underrated! Our favorites include the falafel plate and the beef gyro plate and I always make sure to get a lemonade! Never disappoints and the staff is always so sweet!
google avatar

Yelp
Smiley's Cafe was a fantastic shop with great hospitality! They were extremely accomodating and gave us some extra sauce when splitting the beef gyro platter. The food tasted great, and the overall experience was fantastic!

Yelp
Objectively I wished the falafel and grape leaves had more flavor. The color of the falafel was just tan not green. The service was nice and quick. The seating was fine and the ambiance was welcoming:) I would not go out of my way to come here but if I was in the city I might stop by for a smoothie to support the family business.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome service, really awesome grape leaves, really awesome lemonade. The place was cute inside too. I will come back!!!

Ben D.

Yelp
The lady in here is the sweetest lady in manayunk. Their food is also super fresh and delicious. I would go in there just to talk to the sweet lady.

Yelp
I wish I'd taken pictures of our food but it was too good and we were hungry! Take my word for it, though- this was delicious. Best falafel and stuffed grape leaves I've had since moving to Philly from NYC. We also got a small Greek salad that was plenty for 1 person... plus one who picks at someone else's food but "doesn't want anything of their own." ;-) Above all, you could taste the love. The service was friendly and warm- befitting the name Smiley's. Cozy little space to eat in and sit at a small table for 2, or at the counter overlooking people passing by on Main Street. Recommend!
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
The couple that run Smiley's are so nice!!! They make you feel welcome and appreciated! They make a great strawberry banana smoothie and a great falafel sandwich. Its more of a wrap than a pocket... so that was a change from the usual me. Prices are reasonable! Now I need a reason to be in Philadelphia again.

Yelp
Food was fresh, delicious, and fairly priced. Beware of the pickled jalapeños if you are sensitive to spicy food. Service was outstanding, The owner-host made us feel immediately welcomed and at ease. She let us customize our order and was very prompt with our food. She was very knowledgeable about the ingredients they use, as well. The seating area was very small, but that is to be expected in this area. Overall, this was by far our favorite restaurant to visit in the Philly area.

Yelp
Either my tastes have changed or Smiley's has improved. Maybe a bit of both? Regardless, Smiley's went from an option to one of my regulars over the last several months. Getting a beef gyro is simple but delivers a wonderfully tasty lunch or dinner. I'm hooked on their tabouli salad. I recently tried their falafel platter. While it doesn't replace the recently closed Mama's falafel my heart and belly miss, it does well on its own right. I've also enjoyed a few of their real fruit smoothies. I really love the one with honey and coconut milk, however, the name is escaping me at the moment. Go large FTW. They have very limited seating even prior to COVID restrictions. I think they only have one or two tables outside, so it is more of a to-go joint. They staff has always been friendly. Really, I can only end by saying check them out!

Yelp
Food is outstanding and plentiful!! Service is great family operated. Cute spot always clean.

Yelp
Thank you Smileys Café for the best Falafels I ever had. You and Mrs Loubna are kind and sweet. I really loved the smoothies as well. You will forever have my business!!!

Ling S.

Yelp
It's a small little restaurant offering mostly take out. I haven't tried their main dishes but have gotten baklava several times! They were fantastic.

Yelp
Very good Mediterranean spot. Good portions, prices and service. Got the veggie platter which basically had the entire menu and was perfect portions to share (2 of us). The baba ganoush is probably my favorite portion of the meal and version I've had. It's smoky but not too smoky. I find sometimes it goes overboard with the smoky flavor and that wasn't here. It still had lots of flavor but good balance. The service was very sweet. She threw in an extra pita for us to split evenly (normally it's 3 pitas) and even made extra pineapple lemonade for us to have. Definitely would come back here!

Randy M.

Yelp
I've literally never reviewed a location before, but I had to for this place! Top notch! You can literally taste the amount of passion that went into making this! Best gyro I've ever had! The people are really nice too! Definitely would recommend

Yelp
My buddy and I were coming back from Philly on our bicycles and rode through Manayunk looking for foods like falafels and shawarmas. Although you wouldn't know it from the name, this was the spot! They had some sidewalk signs out and that was they key. Otherwise, we would have rode by unawares. Manayunk is trendy and fashionable these days and I am sure the upscale restaurants are great. But, we just wanted some street food and not spend a ton of cash. The mom working there had her kids with her and we were able to chat with her sweet 6 year old boy. Family-owned restaurants are the best. Good home cooking. I had the beef shawarma. It was delicious. I also had a strawberry/banana smoothie that really hit the spot. It was just what the Dr. ordered for a long bike ride from Valley Forge Park to Philly and back. There may be some history to the Smiley's name that they are holding onto. It might be wise to rename it something more contextual to the food. The six year old's name means "Blooming Flower" or something like that in English. That'd work. The spot is not upscale. Just great food at a nice price. When we hopped back on our bikes (we were allowed to bring them into the small dining area because it was after the lunch rush) the older gentleman behind the counter thanked us several time for coming in. Our pleasure for sure!

Yelp
Friendly family owned small business. We got the beef gyro sandwich platters which were a good choice (gyro has tzatziki, shawarma has tahini and hummus). The platter comes with pita, hummus, and greek salad. Prices are reasonable and while there's limited indoor seating there are plenty of picnic tables right across the street. Will definitely be coming back again to try their other menu items!

Christine L.

Yelp
Service was amazing and the owners are so kind and thoughtful - food is incredible. Beef gyro and smoothie - soooo yummy. Wish I lived closer!

Yelp
My wife had a bad day so I told her I'd bug her dinner. She didn't want to choose so I spun the wheel and landed on Smileys. I'm bored with pizza and tacos. This was a more than welcome change of direction. If you are contemplating the smoothies you gotta pull the trigger on that shit. I got one and it was awesome. I got the beef platter and it was awesome. The platters are a lot of food. You get the protein, rice, salad, hummus, and pita. The salad was awesome. They put hot peppers in it and the dressing has some bite too. I can't wait to try this place again in the NEAR future. No need to buy tzatziki sauce The platter comes with it.

Yelp
Excellent family-run spot.. we went for lunch.. first of all everyone working there was smiling and happy. They welcomed us in and answered any questions we had. After ordering the person preparing our food asked questions to ensure the food was prepared to our likings. Portions were massive. The food was delicious. Fresh and flavorful. We left with a smile on our face and smile in our belly.

Josh N.

Yelp
The staff is extremely friendly, and the food is prepared quickly and nicely. I have only been there for five times and Smiley already recognizes me.
google avatar

Jessy S.

Yelp
The most friendly family run business. Pair is from Morocco and Lebanon. Hole in the wall right on Main Street. Few simple seats inside. Many people just pick up but we like to sit and speak with the owners. Fresh juices made to order and all your Middle Eastern specialties. ****The falafel (which I have had in many places everywhere) is ridiculously delicious. I stop in sometimes just to take some home. A gem.***
google avatar

Eleanor N.

Yelp
The employees of this restaurant are so sweet and friendly when you walk in, definitely made me feel welcome. I tried the hummus and tabbouleh pita sandwich and it was good. Nice and light and healthy but filling. Next time I'd try a side of one of their sauces with it as well. Cant wait to try more menu items!
google avatar

Yelp
The owner was wonderful living up to the name of smiley! Super welcoming and 100% recommend to all. It's small inside so maybe consider take out or if it's nice a picnic!

Yelp
Was meeting a friend down the street and arrived incredibly early and with an empty stomach. I love a Greek salad so I decided to try Smiley's based on the reviews. Thank you, Yelpers! You did not disappoint. The woman who helped was pleasant and helpful. I think she and her husband are the owners. I ordered the large Greek salad (even though my belly told me to get the small one) and a lemonade. The salad was phenomenal. Whatever seasoning was sprinkled on top needs to be sold in stores (it may already be and I'm late to the game). The only thing I would change is to have the option of adding some sort of protein to the salad. The lemonade tasted homemade and fresh. It was just sweet enough. This place is cozy but there is outdoor seating on the side street. I did not see a bathroom so can't comment on that. Parking in Manyunk is a beast so prepare yourself mentally if you're driving and download the app or bring change. You will get a ticket. I can't wait to come back here.

Yelp
A friend of mine planted the idea of Mediterranean food like Leo in Inception. The parking near my house leaves so much to be desired so I've made it a goal to try the more popular eateries in walking/delivery distance. Grubhub/Ubereats/Postmates is further limiting my options via their service and delivery fees. I get it, advancements in tech cost money but Gee Willikers Batman! Here is the order I placed on 10/04/19: Beef Gyro Sandwich Falafel Platter Baklava Walnut and Honey Total Incl Delivery: $27.51 I placed my order via Yelp around 530pm this day and before confirming read a notification saying the restaurant was not offering delivery confirmation until 6pm. Since I'm aware that (9 times out of 10) I am only superficially hungry due to frustration or bored, I was fine with that timeline. Around 550pm the bell rang and a very pleasant and smiling young lady handed off my food. Back in the beat laboratory I unpacked my meal and immediately took note of the bright colors and fresh smell. I subsequently housed (attacked) the Gyro. After recently eating at the Yiro Yiro, I didnt have the highest expectations and was all but preparing for chewy meat. To the contrary, fresh, and flavorful. The falafel was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, the sides were zesty and the bread warm and airy. It all hit the spot and lives up to the stellar reviews from the other Yelpers. Cuisine: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Decor: N/A Value: 9/10 Overall: 9.6 out of 10

Yelp
Smiley's Cafe is such a gem in Manayunk! My boyfriend and I stopped by and ordered the Falafel Platter, Beef Shawarma and Pineapple Lemonade. I personally loved the Falafel Platter which came with 6 pieces falafel, assorted vegetables, hummus, pita and 3 grape leaf wraps. The falafel was incredibly tasty and the entire platter was generously portioned. My boyfriend enjoyed his beef shawarma. It was plentiful, filling and tasty. The pineapple lemonade was exactly what I needed on a hot summer day - refreshing, sweet and blended cold! The service was super nice and welcoming. This is a great local spot that's affordable and flavorful when you're craving Mediterranean. I would highly recommend!
google avatar

Shannon T.

Yelp
Great gyros and falOrdered take out from here and was soooo happy! We love gyros but didn't have a place we regularly order in the area. I got the chicken gyro and boyfriend got the beef gyro. The chicken gyro was delicious and I ate the entire thing but the beef gyro was phenomenal!!!! We also got the falafel platter. The falafels were fresh, well seasoned, and a great texture. Food is inexpensive and my order was ready when I got there to pick it up. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Elise M.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! When I lived on Main St, I probably ate here once every two weeks. I always get the Greek Gyro wrap, and sometimes falafels. Everything is great. The place is owned by a delightful family who go above and beyond to make sure you're served your meal with a smile! The pita is thinner than usual pita at greek restaurants. I would consider this pita to be more-so lebanese. Delicious!
google avatar

Dennis L.

Yelp
Not bad. Went for pick up and it looks really cute inside. The food was okay, but everything was more sour then I expected. Grape leaves are expected to be sour but the other flavors and included dipping was more sour then expected.
google avatar

Nico S.

Yelp
Delicious food always! Service is friendly and happy to serve. Would recommend to anyone looking for comforting, tasty Mediterranean food.
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
Sometimes simple is delicious. Walking down Main Street I passed by Smiley's and suddenly had a craving for a gyro. This place definitely hit the spot for me! I ordered the chicken gyro with the tropical craze smoothie. Food was ready relatively quickly and portions were generous. The chicken was tender and paired well with the tzatziki. The smoothie was creamy and refreshing at the same time. Simple ingredients that pair well together combined with great customer service had me walking out - dare I say it - smiling. Based on the many rave reviews, I look forward to trying other items off of the menu!
google avatar

Jasmine U.

Yelp
This place has soooo many great reviews I just knew I would love the food. I'm a sucker for a good falafel platter, actually you can call me the falafel whisperer, I know my stuff. While the meal wasn't terrible I wouldn't order from here again. Very lack luster pita bread (almost stale), extremely dry falafel and the real disappointment very grainy hummus not smooth at all. I did enjoy my salad for a small it was a good size and even better price but it was missing the onions my favorite ingredients in a salad especially Greek. The portion was good as well but again it just wasn't all that & I felt like I wasted my money. Maybe it was an off day.
google avatar

Jeanee V.

Yelp
I love this place. Everything is always so mouth watering delicious. The staff is passionate about what they do. A+ for fresh food and awesome service! I have sampled quite a bit from their menu, but my all time favorite order is the beef platter, side of tzatziki sauce and a fresh raspberry lemonade. I have no reason to go to another place for Greek food. I'd recommend this place to anyone.
google avatar

Dana B.

Yelp
We just moved to the area and wow. The owner is super friendly as was the woman working in the kitchen. The food was fresh, cheap, and fast. And to top it all off- the owner made me a free smoothie out of the goodness in his heart! Smileys, you just made a permanent customer- I will be back for those falafels!!
google avatar

Kristy D.

Yelp
Came here for a casual lunch on a Sunday afternoon! Sat at a table outside with our two pups and ordered a beef gyro, a chicken gyro, a Greek side salad and hummus with pita bread! Both gyros were great however I thought the beef was better than the chicken. The Greek salad was a good size for the price. No complaints on the hummus. Everything was pretty good! Definitely would come back!
google avatar

Jack M.

Yelp
With all the praises I expected more. This was a simple gyro without anything particularly complex, unique, or even superior execution. The pita is very thin and a bit dried out. The romaine lettuce, as you can see, is somewhat wilted and beginning the fast decay feared in garde manger stations the world over. The primary issue of this sandwich was the flavor balance. The flavor profile was dominated by cool dill yogurt. This sour flavor strongarmed the beef, vegetables, and pita (all three of which only carried marginal flavor pack anyway.) The condiments, romaine lettuce and tomato, are an odd choice for a Mediterranean dish. I would much prefer the traditional pickled radish and mayo-based saucing. While this gyro was ok, I was hoping for much more. This came nowhere near the kebabs in Berlin. Those were half the price. I left confused with the 4.5 star rating.

Kevin R.

Yelp
Fantastic food and service. A nice warm inviting atmosphere. The owner is one of the nicest people I've ever met.
google avatar

Laura H.

Yelp
Delicious and affordable! Popped by with a friend to grab lunch. I wanted something healthy (read - not tons of pita) but delicious. The woman taking my order said she could essentially put the beef shawarma over lettuce, so that's what I did! My salad came with plenty of meat and little containers of hummus and tahini. The best - and surprising - part was this amazing onion/dressing that was on the lettuce. I honestly am not sure what it was, but it had so much flavor! So good. And at $7.55, you cant beat it! I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Jill D.

Yelp
Tried for the first time yesterday. Got the chicken sharwma platter. Portion was huge. Chicken was so tender and cooked with great flavor. Hummus was on point. Was able to try all 3 sauces and the homemade garlic sauce was great. Also had the Falafel. Cooked crispy and had a small bite of spice which was different then others I have tried. Was very good. Owner makes everything and couldn't be nicer. Would go back for sure

Yelp
Smiley's was the first restaurant that I went to when I moved to the Manayunk area, and I have kept on going. I love this place. I often get their greek salad with beef added to it. It tastes great, and the portions are huge! I also often get a side of their Baba Ghanouj and a side of their Tabouleh salad. Both are amazing. The staff is extremely friendly, and remembers me when I come in, which is one of the reasons I love supporting them. It goes a long way, when you have friendly customer service. The restaurant is rather small, so delivery or pickup is the best option. I preferred pickup when I was living near Main Street, so that I could stop in and say hi. Unfortunately, now I live a little further so it's not as easy. Bottom line if you are thinking of ordering from Smiley's, do it. Your taste buds will thank you!
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
As I would skeptically pass by this out of the world rated restaurant I always wondered could it be that good...my first experience points to yes. Pretty simple order of small Greek salad with chicken and small house salad with chicken did not disappoint. There were only two top salad spots in Manayunk/Roxborough until I ate here: couch tomato and zestos. Now there are three. Good price point and appropriate size. Ease of online ordering, fresh ingredients. Need to go back and hit up some of there other stuff.

Yelp
A good spot to grab a quick Greek meal in Manayunk. I came here this past Tuesday with my boyfriend and we ordered grape leaves, the beef shawarma platter (subbing baba ganouj for hummus), the falafel sandwich, and a tropical smoothie. What's good: -The grape leaves! I'm normally not into grape leaves at all, but ordered them because my SO wanted them. I'm not even sure what exactly was in them (other than rice), but they were amazing. They had a really complex mix of flavor: a bit sour, a bit umami, a bit sweet, which made them really interesting. They also came on a bed of salad, so the entire side was really refreshing. -The beef shawarma platter: tender, flavorful slices of beef with tzatziki sauce, fluffy and fragrant jasmine rice, creamy baba ghanoj, and a really fresh mix of veggies and feta for the salad. -The tropical smoothie: coconut, pineapple, banana, and honey. I find smoothies a bit too sweet generally, but this was perfect. *Even better because you get bits of coconut pieces as you sip! What's less good: -The falafel sandwich: The falafel was crispy and I believe homemade, but bland. I wish it had a bit more flavor, and also that there was more hummus in the sandwich. -The pita: not bad, just not great (thin, kind of tough). I don't think their pita is homemade, so that's probably why. -even if you eat in they give you Styrofoam/plastic take out containers. It would be nice if they gave real plates/cutlery to people who eat in their dining area!

Yelp
Finally stopped in to Smiley's today to order a quick lunch for takeout. I have been wanting to try Smiley's for a while now, and now that I have it will definitely become one of my go-to spots. I ordered the dolmades platter, which also comes with hummus, tahini, tabouleh, salad, and pita (I love that they offer whole wheat pita). I can be picky about hummus and I thoroughly enjoyed this hummus. Everything was delicious and tasted very fresh. It was also a very generous portion especially for the price point. It ended up being my lunch and dinner! I am already thinking about when I can go back to try the falafel and baba ghanoush! Also, the owners were there and were very friendly! I highly recommend going to check out and support this local business!

Yelp
This is absolute treasure and staple. I've loved coming here since my very first visit to Philly and always look for a great falafel place to make me feel at home and this is it! Great food made with love by awesome people!
