Boston’s Steakhouse in a Castle Closes This Summer | Eater Boston

"Opening in the former Blue Ginger space at 583 Washington St., the new suburban location is a smaller, more compact outpost that will seat about 250 diners indoors with additional seasonal patio seating. Expected to open for dinner on May 24 with lunch service beginning May 29, the restaurant reflects the company’s shift in focus toward the suburbs while continuing the brand’s steakhouse offerings — multiple steak cuts with elaborate toppings, shellfish towers, cocktails and similar menu highlights — in a reduced footprint." - Dana Hatic

This was our first time here and it was excellent. It’s certainly on the pricier side but the food was excellent, the service was great, and they have a fairly extensive wine list; mostly US wine but they have some French and Italian options. Steak was cooked perfectly and food came out relatively quickly. We were there on a holiday though and it wasn’t that busy for 7pm. We made a reservation ahead of time and were seated right away.

Smith & Wollensky is a steakhouse in the heart of Wellesley, with an upscale but minimalist interior and great service. Staff explained every dish throughout the entire process, telling us what was contained in each dish and also taking into consideration our preferences. The food was phenomenal. We got the caesar salad, which wasn't too overwhelming with sauce, but tasted quite well. The steak was definitely a highlight, seasoned perfectly and cooked perfectly as well. It came with asparagus, which elevated the experience. The desserts are also top class, such as the cookie skillet, which was one of the best desserts I've ever had. Overall, a wonderful experience and would highly recommend going here on a special occasion.

While I was eating, I noticed cockroaches crawling on the table. It was extremely unsanitary and quite off-putting. I hope this issue can be addressed promptly to ensure a cleaner dining environment. We should also address the issue of line cooks standing around talking rather than working. Additionally, some staff members were seen smoking outside and failing to wash their hands before returning to their duties. I would never eat at this restaurant again due to the unsanitary conditions I witnessed. It's imperative that someone contacts the health department to address these issues immediately. My reply to your message: May I ask who you are? It seems like you are implying that I am not being truthful. I never claimed the restaurant was dirty; I mentioned that I saw roaches and observed a staff member smoke a cigarette and then return to the floor. I am confident in what I witnessed. Please address these concerns and understand that I am simply providing a review, which I am entitled to do. Rather than thanking me for the feedback, you seem to be upset with me for sharing my observations. Perhaps spending more time with your staff and making your own observations would be beneficial.

I had the Truffle Mac & Cheese delivered from this restaurant and there was a dead bug in it. It looked squished, and I had already eaten some pasta when I pulled it out, so I can tell it was mixed in during cooking and it didn’t just fall into the bowl at the last minute. How unbelievably disgusting.

Classic steak house in Wellesley. Has a nice bar area and the dining rooms are classy as well. Food, drinks and service were spot on...

Google
Food was good. But we got the $250 hanging tomahawk steak and because of the small table they did the "special presentation / cutting" across the aisle 2 tables down. We felt robbed of the experience you'd expect at that price level.

This was our first time dining at S&W. We had a great experience which was largely due to our phenomenal server, Laurie. Every single recommendation she made was amazing. Without Laurie, I think we would have picked the wrong food and wine and that would have impacted our dining experience. Laurie was knowledgeable and also listened to us so she could point us in the right direction for our taste. The food was incredible. We will be back! Thank you to all the staff and Laurie for an excellent birthday dinner!!

Life is short! F.... It up! Family,Flavor Friends this is my first visit at this high reputation establishment. We are here for a friends birthday and decided since we’re here let’s get the best things they have got the tomahawk steak, which was a show and a dinner. We also got the porterhouse, truffle mac & cheese the bacon truffle fries. The service was good the environment in the setting we’re also good as expected. However, let’s talk about the main course, although the steaks were very eye pleasing. I was wanting that first bite to be everything that I can be and give you that all of casein some thing really delicious. Unfortunately this time it was very bland and maybe I don’t eat at these expensive restaurants a lot. But should the steak really be cold? And tasteless, I was hoping to write a amazing review, but I couldn’t. Three stars for service and decor.

Yelp
My wife and I went to S&W for dinner this week. Our server was Missy, she was great -- A+ for service from Missy, she was very polite, attentive and answered my question about some menus items with good answers. Also, the host and other people serving us were excellent all around service. That matters. Missy was very attentive at our drink refills (iced tea), cleaning up our table after each course. All that you expect from a high end fine dining place like S&W. For apps we had the massive shrimp cocktails. These shrimps were bigger than a baby's foot. Also, had the fried octopus app, I wanted to try it. You don't usually see fried octopus on a menu. it was good. Wife and I shared a wedge salad, they divided it for us into 2 plates, very awesome. Even chopped into 2 salads from one, it was a big delicious serving for each of us. Wife had a ribeye, I had the duck confit. Both were amazing. I love duck. The ribeye was huge, I ate a portion of it, it was too much for my wife. That's a great thing about marriage, eating two entrees! lol. Sides were truffle fries and the corn. The corn was ok, the truffle fries were great. they serve the fries with ketchup dipping container. Fries were so good, they are better without ketchup. Dessert we took home for later. 1 was decent, 1 wasn't good at all. The coconut cream cake dessert was decent, not great. The cake layer portion of it was dry. The cream portion top layer was good. Overall, not worth the cost of it. The Chocolate Cake dessert wasn't good. It was dry and just wasn't good. I have had better chocolate cake from the grocery store. That was the only thing we didn't like, to be honest. We saved it for the next day and even my kids didn't like. When middle school aged kids don't like Chocolate Cake, you know it's not good I am giving this place 4 stars because the desserts fell short, everything else was great. We spent $34 on those 2 desserts, they should have been great, they weren't. Once again, the apps and entrees were great and the service was excellent.

Yelp
I dont want to sound like a prima donna but when you are selling $85 steaks, you got to bring your A game. SW is really mailing it in. It started off with the hostess seating in what seemed to be a storage area, which happened to be next to another storage area. We asked to be moved and we were accommodated. It was cold in the restaurant. My hands were cold. My wife wore her Canada Goose. The bathroom was cleaned. There was a trash can that was overflowing, with the trash on the floor. We switched our side order, replacing one starch w another. The waiter missed that, and brought out both. We were still eating the apps, when the entrees were brought out. My filet butterflyed was burnt on one side, perfect on the other. When eating our entrees we noted we were never served the bread that was being brought to every other table. The waiter interrupted me when I was talking w my friend to help her clear the table and pass her dishes. Odd to me, maybe normal, they do not give you a paper bill. They give you a electronic device that you pass around to your fellow diners to overview the bill and swipe to pay the bill. As I left the table ... a waitress chased me ... sir sir sir sir ... you forgot this. And handed me the credit card device. I guess she thought it was my phone?? LOL Again, you want to charge 5 star prices ... the food and service needs to be at the same level.

Yelp
I mean the prices here are literally utterly fucking shocking ... and terrifying. I spend a lot of time in Beverly Hills and Manhattan and the only place I've seen prices approach this stratosphere is The Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Looking at the price of the cheapest steak on the menu still makes one's asshole pucker. Beyond the steaks, everything else is also sky high. When they bring a wine list and a single glass from a bottle that coats $65 at a liquor store is ... $65, you know you are going to be in for a wild ride. $17 for 8 stalks of asparagus ... makes you want to grab your ankles and say, 'Thank you sir, may I have another!' Okay ... so we addressed that elephant in the room. The value is about as off here as a 3 wheeled car in a Formula One race. But ... is it worth it? I have to say, the vibe here is excellent. Even tables in the shittiest location are decent. Lots of classy wood paneling, black leather booths, white table cloths and it feels like a spot that wouldn't be out of place on the Upper East Side or Mayfair in London. The only thing that seemed a bit off was the music. 70's classic rock didn't really fit in with the vibe. There was once this guy named Sinatra ... if you are going to charge me $99 for a 10 oz. New York Strip with no sides, spare me the Jethro Tull and dive bar jukebox music. The steaks on the menu are pretty confusing. There is a section for 'regular' steaks between $70 - $100. Then there is grass fed USDA Prime steaks, where the minimum price is $90. And then there is American Wagu, of which some cost around what a Toyota Corolla cost in 1984. We got the USDA rib eye ($90) and the Wagu New York Strip ($100). One of the first things I noticed is that despite how much they brag aboyt the quality of their steak ... almost every steak is smothered in some kind of sauce. There's nothing like covering a $120 steak in a creamy cheesy sauce ... or a Chimichurri. Like, what in the actual fuck? I could go to In N Out burger and get an Animal Style burger for $7 if I wanted to taste sauce. My New York Wagu came out under a dome full of smoke. And a ton of Chimichurri sauce. And a coffee dry rub. You'd wonder why one woukd spend $100 on a simple cut of steak only to hide it under the 3 strongest flavours on the planet. It was okay ... but not very tender at all for supposed 'Wagu' and they cut it into two pieces ... probably to check the middle to see if it was done. At least it was cooked well ... but it seemed a bit dry because it was sliced in two pieces. The Rib Eye was better because it wasn't doused with, rubbed with or covered in smoke. While it wasn't the best Rib Eye steak ever, it wasn't the worst. Certainly in the top 10, although maybe just a tad undercooked. Medium rare was red throughout. We had the asparagus ... meh. Covered in creamy Hollindaise and not the super thick stalks. We also ordered the mashed potatoes. Also meh and nothing too special. Oddly all the beers were from cans ... the wine was the largest markup I've ever seen ... so we stuck with $22 Martinis, which were good but could have stood to be shaked for a minute more as it wasn't quite as cold as I'd have liked. Honestly, the best part of the meal was the warm bread and butter served before the entrees arrived. Their fanous pea soup was like ham fkavoured wallpaper paste. A hard pass for next time The waitstaff was very professional and knowledgeable about the menu ... and not afraid to make recommendations. They also did not miss a single opportunity to push drinks, sides, salads, etc. on us. It seemed like we were peppered by both the waitress and the roving hosts/managers to order another drink ... another side ... or a dessert. I know the tone of my review is not the nost positive ... but we actually did enjoy our neal here and would likely come back for a splurge meal. Like the Ritz Carlton, you pay a lot of money but at least you'll know the food and service will be of an overall high quality. On no planet ... in no solar system ... or in no dimension do the prices match the value here. But, you will have a good meal in a nice vibe.

Yelp
I went to Smith & Wollensky for the first time recently. My server, Amanda P, was outstanding. My husband and I had no idea what to lover order, and Amanda was able to give ample information on each dish that was on our list! She was attentive to our needs, and made sure we were well taken care of. The food on the other hand was sub par. We were slightly disappointed in our food because some of it lacked flavor. Maybe the kitchen had an off night? I'm not sure, but thankfully our experience was not diminished because the service we received was outstanding! thank you Amanda!

Yelp
Dined in the Wellesley location this past Sat. Service fine but a bit slow, no big deal. Food unfortunately was tasteless. Tuna tartar and grilled octopus starters were uneventful but salad was fine. Decided to stop there. Dined in Boston location many times but Wellesley not the same. Wine by the glass could be reeled in a bit especially when just standard.

Yelp
Great service as always. David was on point with all the suggestions and really kept us in check. The location is off the main street. Typical of any steak house, dim lit, table cloth, dark and cool. Nothing special compared to other S&W locations. The service is the most distinguishing factor.

Yelp
We went for dinner tonight for my friends birthday, and we absolutely loved JC! he was a fantasic server and so much fun! he gave us a great chocolate cake and we were all so impressed. thank you JC!

Yelp
Always a good effort at this S&W. A couple of misses on the food on our last visit but nothing derailing, just a few mistakes on the order details. Asked for no lardons, but the salad came with lardons. Asked for blue cheese crumbles, but none came. Mac was dry as if it was sitting in a bain-marie for a long time prior to being served. Excellence in restaurants, or anything in life, is always about the details. Service here is never rushed which is a huge plus.

Yelp
Been to this location a couple of times. The drinks are great and the service is solid. The inside is nice. Dim lit and white table clothes. Both are what to be expected from an establishment that's meant to be so high end. The steaks are amazing and the presentation is what I would want out of a $300 dinner. That being said the sides are pretty bland. The Mac and cheese has little to no flavor and the asparagus is average and the chocolate cake is bland and dry. The creamed spinach is pretty good. The steak never disappoint. But I expect the accoutrement to be on the same level for the price of the full meal.

Yelp
The waiter was attentive, he brought bread out then returned it to the kitchen before I ate it because he saw a few brush fibers on it. I enjoyed a sweet roast beet salad sweet with creamy vinaigrette. The famous pea split soup was a little bit grainy but tasted nutritious. Plenty of street parking!

Yelp
Long overdue review as we dined back in April--Racist and unwelcoming establishment. I believe the manager on duty's name is Jessica, she was the host and mentioned she was in training; and the server, Colleen. The only people who treated us well were the busser & food runner gentlemen. 1st red flag was Colleen she spilled water on us and didn't even apologize. We mentioned it was one of our first times and she didn't think to help break down the menu or anything--just gave us big attitude and rushed us to put in our order "Are you guys finally ready yet?" I hadn't even sat down long enough to come up with any appetizers I wanted to try. No refills on our waters and no check-in's. We could also overhear Colleen talking poorly about us to another employee mentioning "Asian & black," there weren't any other people of color in the room, so who else would she be talking about? When she drops the check, she doesn't give us a pen. When my boyfriend walks up to ask for a pen, she picks up the check instead and asks "oh were you not going to sign it?" He defends himself by saying she did not include a pen and she laughs and rolls her eyes in front of us. Shocking right? Then she proceeds to ask what I do for work, where I'm from, which are very weird questions to ask at the end of the meal. She assumed we weren't going to tip! We might as well haven't but still tipped because we both used to work in the food industry, but she honestly deserved $0 tip after that experience. It was so bad, she walked us all the way out of the door saying "have a nice night." So terrible to have been treated that way. I called and asked for the manager who claimed her name was Jessica and she knew who we were, she apologized and didn't know what to do and said she'd talk to another manager the next day. They took down our contact information and no one reached out to us. Terrible place, and this will be terrible business for them as I know many people who work and are from this area very well.

Yelp
The prompt service, ambiance, attention to detail and the food were all outstanding! We ordered angry shrimp, seafood towers, wagyu filet, porterhouse, salad, mac and cheese, spinach, asparagus, wine, drinks and dessert...each item was perfectly executed.

Yelp
The most overrated thing about this upscale expensive steakhouse is the steak itself. $80 steak comes on a cold dish and without any added side dishes. You have several side dishes to purchase at the additional price to already overpriced steaks. The steaks are cooked with different styles of rubs of seasoning. We ordered regular and also with blackened style. We had 10 oz. Fillet medium rare and 28 oz. Ribeye steak medium and medium rare. The fillet tasted dry and ribeye with blackened rub was too well done. None of us was too impressed. Four sides were creamy spinach, asparagus, mushrooms and side of salad. The mushrooms were awful and the rest of sides were not too memorable. The sea bass was surprisingly good. Overall barely three stars. Don't waste your hard earned money for their impressive settings. I rather spend much less for better things. I'm not a fan of big steak anymore.

Yelp
All food was amazing! This is a high end steak house that is foodie recommended! Enjoy the classy atmosphere while enjoying a special dinner experience. We enjoyed dinner with a large party of 10 people very comfortably. APPETIZERS - STEAK TARTARE with croutons, pickled red onion, kettle chips. Beef is their speciality and the chef got this 110% right! The salty kettle chips were perfect pairing. - TUNA TARTARE with sesame-crusted sushi rice, wakame, sriracha aioli, ponzu. Not steak, but delicious flavors with nice touch of heat from the sriracha aioli. - SHELLFISH TOWER FOR 2. Meh. chilled Jonah crab claws, jumbo shrimp, oysters, scallop ceviche - accompanied by horseradish cocktail sauce, cognac mustard, ginger sauce and green apple mignonette. This was not as enjoyable for me as the other appetizers. ENTREE - AMERICAN WAGYU FILET TENDERLOIN. 9 oz. black grade Wayu, roasted shallot, asparagus, marrow butter. OMG so good. I understand American Wagyu is crossbreed of Japanese Wagyu bulls and Angus bulls. It is less fatty than Japanese Wagyu but more fatty than Angus. It's a nice balance as you can only eat 2-3ounces of Japanese Wagyu due to its extremely high fat content. The seasoned crust on this steak was to die for! DESSERT - our group sampled three treats NY STYLE CHEESECAKE - my hands-down favorite treat. It was perfectly dense and had some mystery ingredient that added a subtle, elegant flavor. 10 LAYER CHOCOLATE CAKE - brushed with Baileys Irish Cream, chocolate mousse and covered with ganache. This was a good chocolate cake but I am just not a cake guy. COCONUT LAYER CAKE - Meh. If you are a coconut fanatic then go for it but wasn't my favorite. Coconut sponge cake layered with whipped cream and Malibu rum syrup, served with a crisp tuile and shaved coconut

Yelp
Food and service were great best steakhouse dinner I've had in years. Everything was on time and cooked perfectly.

Alan L.

Yelp
We were there to celebrate a family members birthday and had 12 people in our party. While the food was very good, the service was absolutely horrible. It took 45 minutes to get our first drinks. And even then, they came out two at a time which took even longer. Appetizers came out in a reasonable amount of time but then the waiter never bothered to check on us or clear the empty plates. We cleared our table ourselves. We brought a cake in, with permission of the restaurant, but after 3 hours of sitting there, we decided to skip the cake and we took it home. What made this worse is that you would think that a manager would check on a large party just to say hi and thank you for coming in, especially since the bill was quite high. Other than the extremely slow waiter, we never saw anyone else. To say the least, we will never go back.

Doggypatchable ..

Yelp
Went here for lunch , w/a friend I had the petit Ny strip 8ozs really good , my friend had coffee tub prime rib aside mash potatoes, which were great. This is a must try definitely, service was great , definitely a upper class steak house worth spending money but definitely reasonable prices

John C.

Yelp
Food poisoning! Beware! Service was extremely poor. Tall white guy waiter was very inconsiderate. Food quality was poor, served cold, and lacked flavor.

Yelp
So this was a much better spot than the original in NYC. It is tucked into the downtown area of Wellesley and there is parking free available roadside. It is exactly what you would expect from a top-tier steakhouse. Plenty of steak options, lots of interesting sides, but not much else in the middle. There is definitely a New England flair with crabcakes and clam chowder. I did not remember these from the original restaurant so must be a local addition. Great service too.

John L.

Yelp
Went for lunch and sat at a table in the Bar. I could not see through the glass of tap water. Not sure if it was the glass or the town water. Looked like it came from a rain puddle on the street. Ordered the tenderloin sandwich. Once I recovered from the sodium coma I suffered at the first bite, I realized I was eating some type of meat. It was not tender nor was it a loin cut. I chewed it feverishly, tearing the meat from the gristle like a lioness devouring a caribou in the lower Serengeti. For the price, I was very unimpressed. Overall barely edible. Server was loud and bossy....and she was training a newbie!!

Harvey S.

Yelp
I don't mind paying the high price, but we were packed in like sardines. Service was good as was the food. The "experience " could have been better.

J T.

Yelp
nothing special but overpriced food. no organic options just food laden with preservatives, salts and god knows what else. too loud. they put us in horrible location. meat is too big. dessert portion too big.

Yelp
beautifully done restaurant. Tara was so amazing. made us feel right at home and boy did she know her stuff! she is definitely a pro and loved her big smile. drinks were amazing. i can say i've never had one. and was so delighted how tasty and not sugary this drink was. we stopped in for an appetizer and a drink before dinner. the onion rings were so delish. not greasy. just perfect. highly recommend.

Yelp
Food expensive and steak tips were not good. Waitress very nice, but food just not worth their prices. Capital Grille much better

Yelp
The former Blue Ginger space looks more rustic and lived-in, and more private to boot, with seating spread out and private rooms now added. In addition to the bar facing the front windows, there are bar seats facing the kitchen, so if you enjoy watching the action, it's another form of dinner theater. Burger: Dry aged sirloin and filet beef blend, loosely ground and cooked to the requested medium (I prefer medium rare, but was sharing). Despite the lack of pink (more due to the aging than the cooking temp), this burger was extremely juicy. The beef funk from aging was detectable but not as pronounced as in others I've tried. The feel of the burger was beyond reproach. Bacon strips, cheese, an offshoot of mayo, and lettice and tomato all did their thing without fanfare and without masking the beef itself. Served with fries (ordinary, possibly frozen) and coleslaw (excellent). Bacon: A giant slab of pork a little taller than a computer mouse and about three times as long, very marbled and very bacony with hints of hammy thrown in. Very juicy, very fatty, but easy to pull the layers apart for optional discard. The macadamia nut butter and apple pieces as condiment were unobtrusive, letting the meat shine. Ribeye: A large cut of dry aged beef, extra marbled, which means the best pieces will be fabulous but the worst pieces need careful cutting to avoid eating large gobs of fat. Worth it in the end, because there's still an enormous hunk of beef. This was all about the contrast: ordered medium rare, it had a very sturdy blackened exterior, pink hues a little further in, and a fully red, juicy center. Large flakes of salt provide ample seasoning. Sides: Mac and cheese, brussels sprouts, and ginormous onion rings were all impressive, but the best side of all was the Yukon potatoes with garlic butter and diced bacon. Outstanding. Service: Karen was outstanding, outlining the menu, making recommendations, and following up as needed. Overall, a solid first visit. It's steakhouse pricing, so don't expect bargains by any means, but the apps and sides seemed reasonable. I'd definitely go again, adding it to a rotation of steakhouses that includes Morton's, the Palm, and Grill 23.

Yelp
Our party of five was seated in a comfortable booth, and as with all our outings, copious amounts of food were to be consumed. We began with appetizers which included: * Angry Shrimp $23: crispy battered shrimp, spicy lobster butter sauce (maybe they were angry because of the $23 price tag!). Nicely cooked and little spicy. * Beef Bacon $18: thick cut, bourbon apples, fresno chile. Tasty and fatty. * Spinach Salad $14: maple glazed peppered bacon, poached egg, sherry vinaigrette. Delicious! Our main courses included: * Châteaubriand 24 Oz. $98.00 (for two): with roasted vegetables * USDA Prime Boneless New York Strip 12 Oz. $45.00 * 2 Cajun Marinated USDA Prime Bone-In Rib Eye 24 Oz. $68.00 (ea.) * Sautéed or Creamed Spinach $11 * Buttermilk Onion Rings $10 * And one giant slice of birthday cake. It would seem that we left our vegetarian friends' home on this evening! Service was very good throughout our lengthy dinner, and the restaurant was moderately busy. We did a joint Yelp review at the end of the meal, and here was the consensus: 1. The appetizers were very good, especially the salad. 2. The Châteaubriand was excellent, but the roasted carrots were undercooked and under seasoned. 3. Both Cajun Marinated USDA Prime Bone-In Rib Eyes were very good. 4. USDA Prime Boneless New York Strip was not especially liked by the diner (a little overcooked and tough). 5. The Sautéed or Creamed Spinach was excellent, but the Buttermilk Onion Rings were a little undercooked. Rankings were 3.5, 4, 4, 4 and 5. One of the diners commented the bathroom floor was sticky and needed some attention. The price tag for dinner with 20% tip was $825 (expectations are fairly high at this lofty price point). Overall, I thought the dinner and service were quite good, and Smith & Wollensky's merited four stars on this Boys Night Out evening. We would be happy to return.

Yelp
Has the look, feel, and prices of a high-end steakhouse. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre at best and did not meet expectations when eating at a fine-dining establishment. Giving two stars because the service was acceptable.

Yelp
Went to S&W in Wellesley one Monday with a work colleague for a quick lunch. We decided to share a soup and a lunch sized steak entree. We told the waiter this and asked him which of two lunch entrees was better - the lunch steak tips au poivre or the new york strip (pointing to the menu). He recommended the New York strip with the au poivre sides and au poivre sauce.. All tasted good, however we had leftovers. When we got the check I was surprised the bill was more than almost triple what I was expecting. Without telling us explicitly, the dishonest waiter charged us for a dinner portion of the New York strip and the dinner portion of the sides individually. Not the $40 lunch option. He didn't say a word while offering his suggestion. So I won't complain that I was charged for more than we ate. But what I disagree with, and is in very poor taste, is his dishonesty and blatant attempt to take advantage of us. Folks - let this be a warning if you ask for any change to the lunch menu item. And I advise you don't go to S&W for lunch. It's not worth it. I emailed management of the restaurant giving them a chance to make it right. Its been a month and I have heard nothing.

Yelp
Went last night for the swinging tomahawk and was disappointed. Maybe our mistake was ordering it medium rare because what we got was a huge rare steak. At first we tried eating it because neither of us wanted to admit a $200 steak (the SIGNATURE item) is messed up but it was. The steak was bright red, squishy, & cold in center. So terrible. When we tried bringing it to the waiters attention he said the medium rare steaks are actually rare since the steak is thick. However, I wish he would've told us that before we ordered because we didn't get any kind of compensation since it was "prepared fine." Regardless, I felt taken advantage of and forced to buy raw meat because s&w didn't want to admit their mistake. 2 stars for nice decor & the bread. EDIT: Yesterday was too embarrassing for us to argue with the waiter but today we called & the manager made things right.

Yelp
Had a group of ten yesterday celebrating our daughter's Wellesley graduation! I've been in and around the food industry for over 30 years, living in the NYC metro area. Laurie took great care of us. Attentive, professional, helpful with recommendations, personable, she's a gem. Food was great, as you would expect. Yes, it's pricey, but what high-end steak house isn't? Great for festive special occasions, also a great neighborhood bar scene. If you don't want to break the bank for date night with your wife, I recommend splitting a steak (sliced in the kitchen), order two salads, and you can split the bread to start with a nice cocktail. Will be back. Thanks Laurie and staff!

Yelp
Call it 4 1/2 stars. Well above expectations. It does have more of a neighborhood restaurant feel versus a dark, wood paneled steakhouse, but that's really the only quibble. I got the dry aged T bone, cooked perfectly as ordered. Honestly it was only a couple of ounces short of being able to split by two, HUGE steak. Perfect nutty flavor. The hash brown is great, ask for it crispy. Good wedge, heavy on the chunky lardons. My wife said the steak tartare was one of the best she's ever had, and the drinks were on point. We got an anniversary champagne toast complimentary, and the service was spot on all night. I think a lot of one star reviews for pet issues wind up taking down the average here. Excellent spot.

Yelp
We had a family birthday dinner at this restaurant and had an excellent experience. The food was great and our server Laurie was super!

Yelp
Food is very good. Cocktails and wine list, also nice. The prices are high, in my opinion. The bar scene can be good people watching. The main dining area is typical of a high-end steakhouse.

Yelp
Just want to post about our lunch today. Our best friends took us out for my son's 21st bday. The staff, and especially our server Missy, were absolutely incredible. The food, from bread to salad to burgers to pasta and steak tips were perfect. We can't forget the ginormous piece of chocolate cake they just gave him. It too was delicious. It takes a lot to do SUCH an exceptional job, especially in the world of outdoor dining (the only place we feel comfortable sitting). We would recommend S&W Wellesley to anyone. Thank you Missy!

Yelp
It was my first time dining at the Wellesley location and it didn't disappoint. It was a beautiful fall evening, so sitting outside was a nice option. My friend and I enjoyed ordering from the caviar and bubbles menu and also had an order of streak tartare with roasted bone marrow. And the dirty martini with blue cheese olives was perfection!

Yelp
My wife and I met friends and arrived early. We sat at the bar and had a great experience with Tara, the bartender, which went downhill very quickly when we were seated at 6pm. First, my wife asked for a martini - Tara had made one she really liked, and she expressly asked if she could make another one. The server came back with a martini made from another bartender and even acknowledged as such - despite the specific request. The drink was sent back, and Tara made the next one, which was perfect. Secondly, I asked if the hashbrowns could be made without onions and peppers. I was surprised that the answer was no. I make the request regularly at common diners and it is never an issue. The was the least of the issues, but somewhat odd for a restaurant of S&W's caliber. I ordered the filet medallions and the server said "in between" temperatures could not "be guaranteed." I asked her to clarify "in-between" temperatures. She said, " from rare to well done." I am still shaking my head on this one. Fortunately, I am not especially picky as long as it is close, but the idea that anywhere between rare and well done is acceptable is problematic. The idea that the server suggested that there was little confidence of cooking the steak at the right temperature shocks me. We ate at a regular pace but did not leave until 9pm because of the pace of the service. After the meal, the server apologized for the slow service and comped 2 desserts for our friends (4 of them) but not us. When I reminded the server that we also ordered a dessert to go at the same time our friends ordered theirs (I want to be clear that this was not after we realized she would comp pour friends' dessert), she apologized, got the dessert, took back our bill and added the dessert onto it (which she had forgotten to include). The server was pleasant and nice. I should add that she knew our friends but not us, but it was very bad form to comp their desserts and not ours and the steak temperature thing and pace of service has me still scratching my head. I wrote to the restaurant and got not response, This seems to be an experience others have had. At this price point, you deserve much better.

Yelp
Good food Mediocre service at the bar. No one wants to be ignored. Especially when trying to pay their bill.

Yelp
Had a belated Valentines dinner here tonight. Absolutely everything was delicious. Our server, Mickey, was knowledgeable, friendly and fabulous. He made fantastic recommendations and is obviously very passionate about what he does. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. Drinks were delicious. And oh man, the desserts were huge and tasty. We absolutely will be back again. One of the best date nights we've had in a while. Thank you everyone at Smith and Wollensky for a great dinner.

Yelp
Not a great experience. I had the wedge salad. Tomato was white inside. Had fresher tomato in Wendy's burger. Also had the ribeye steak, which should be well marbelled. I would call iIn general overpriced for the quality and average service. Updating review. Gave Smith & Wollensky a second chance. Even worse than the first time. Wagyu Flat Iron Frittes for $75 does not include actual frittes. It comes with some stringy/thin nest garnish. I know what frittes are, and those were not them. Plus, medium rare was very rare. Continue to be underwhelmed by this place

Yelp
Just got home after an early New Year's family dinner. We ordered a variety of seafood, sides, and steak dishes. We all agreed, eh. Service was great, food was dull and less than memorable. I will pay a lot for great food. This was lousy. Won't be back.

Yelp
Nice lunch on our way to Portland, Maine. We decided to stop for a quick lunch at the well known Smith & Wollensky. We have tried various locations, including the iconic New York City and the one in Miami. We were seated close to the bar, in a nice table near the large windows by the street. We ordered the burger ($18), the roasted beets ($18) and the Cobb salad ($13). Everything came out within 15/20 minutes and the waiter was kind and helpful. We also asked for a side of their famous creamed spinach ($6), which definitely did not live up to par compared to the one in New York City. The salad and the beets were good, and good sized as well. The burger was also fairly large and really tasty. Overall, we had a nice meal at the Smith & Wollensky in Wellesley, MA.

Yelp
We were a party of 4 with 6pm reservations id say they were at 50% capacity our server was excellent as well as all the food ordered. After dinner we sat at/near the bar chatting with some locals who visit the restaurant often we mentioned how great our dinning experience had been and that due to the recent one star reviews on yelp we almost selected a different the locals were equally as surprised. We had an excellent time and recommend.

Yelp
Dropped by on Father's day for lunch. We did not have a reservation, so we're seated at the high-tops (at the bar). At 12:30 there were two tables in use outside and we were the second at the bar. The restaurant was not busy... Fifteen minutes later, there were apologies for neglecting us, explaining it was very busy and the kitchen was overwelmed. They took an order; Surf and turf for two $150 (keep it simple). The manager came by after 20 minutes and offered to comp up a first round at the bar. I don't really drink and it is not clear what one might drink with surf and turf; white wine, red wine, shiraz, fog cutter... The latter might have improved things. A different waiter brought sweet bread, slathered in sweet whipped butter. Half an hour in we were served: two dry lobster tails, nicely prepared, 6 steak tips and four little potatoes, served on a bed of saute parsley, with lemon. The greeter brought it, with a caution that the plate was hot. Unfortunately the lobster tail was not. We had butter knives and bread dishes and asked for plates. A while later another waiter came by and looked with amazement and announced, we needed plates. He brought plates and steak knives. The cold dry lobster tail (probably farm grown) was OK. The steak tips were tasty, as were the little potatoes. We declined desert. After an hour we asked for the check and when it arrived, $200 was presented. The waiter suggested no change? I asked for a moment to consider and left a 20% tip. As we left the dining room room was still empty. This was a definitive culinary data point.
