The 24 Best Restaurants In Melbourne - Melbourne - The Infatuation

"There’s so much variety at this vegan dining hall that wait staff often have to reassure diners that yes, it’s all plant-based. That includes the hot pastrami sandwich, the bacon-and-egg brioche roll, the salted-caramel cannoli, and the tiramisu donut. Chef-owner Shannon Martinez pioneered the cuisine in Australia and is known for cold-cuts, cheeses, and almond croissants that are almost as good as the real thing. Staff are cheery, laidback, and likely to have more than one piercing, and Martinez’s neo-goth style extends to a shoppable range of tees, tote bags, coolers, and cat-eye sunnies. Look out for ramen nights at more upscale sibling restaurant Smith & Daughters next door, when you can get impossibly creamy tonkotsu and sip yuzu highballs." - ellen fraser

The best vegan deli in Melbourne, full stop ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We’ve been here twice now on Sunday Collingwood walks, street art and coffee hopping, and each time we ended up here — and for good reason. The space nails the Melbourne vibe: natural light, cool art on the walls, uplifting music, high tables, shared tables, take-away counter, even boutique wines in the fridge. You can pick meals straight from the glass window, grab vegan cheeses, take-home dishes, bar snacks, and more. The menu is fully vegan but so tasty you could bring non-vegan friends and they’d never miss a thing. We’ve had the frittata, pumpkin pie, and vegan duck leg — all amazing. The desserts are next level: vanilla custard slice, chocolate croissants, donuts, caramel popcorn, baked cheesecake, and that red velvet with cream… unforgettable. This is everything you want in a Collingwood/Fitzroy café: fun, funky, foodie, and not to be missed.

this place is such a vegan staple in melbourne. been coming here for about 10 years, and i still get excited to visit every time. this location is great and the space is quite big, but it does get very busy on weekends. i love their decadent drinks (like the s'mores hot choc!) and their sandwiches are incredible. they are huge portions so be warned you will walk out very very full. the deli selection is great too with lots of fake meats, cheese, etc. definitely visit if you haven't, vegan or not!

Great vegan spot! I was so excited to try this place, it was hard to choose what to try!! I settled on the godfather toasted sammy to share with my mom. We both really enjoyed it (and she isn’t vegan!). If we were staying longer in the city we definitely would go back to try more. Everything looked delicious!!! We also got their cookie to go and it was fab! It was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, and you could barely tell it was gluten free. We should have gotten 2!

A review in one word? LOVE. This place is always rocking and I've never had a bad experience! Went with a friend over the weekend - we lined up around 11:45am and they'd already sold out of quite a few options. Hey, when you're that popular, it's a good problem to have! We ordered two different sandwiches, but after we'd ordered, one sold out, so we ended up with two of the same. No complaints though - the flavours were absolutely delicious! This place is like a plant-based eater's dream: pastries, sangas, brekkie, plus deli-style condiments you can take home. It's really a great experience and feels so Melbourne. It gets pretty busy so there's not always a seat available straight away, but with the flow of people coming and going, space opens up pretty quick. If you're thinking about it, just get in there and try it! You won't regret it.

Drinks were delicious with a unique range to choose from. All the food was incredible. The fried chicken sando was amazing but I wouldn't be able to eat one to myself, definitely a sharing size. The Maury ballstein toasty was my favourite.

This is the first time I've visited Smith + Deli since they moved from their old spot. I ordered: Iced chai - Not great, tasted watered down, looks watered down in the photo do ey? 2.5/5 Dirty chai - Pretty good, not the best I've had, not sure if you can get a larger serving but mine was quite small 4/5 Chips - Crunchy and well spiced with generous portion 4/5 Maury Ballstein - Yum 5/5 Paramgeddon - Very filling, a bit heavy for me, couldn't finish it 4/5 Egg Martinez - Nostalgic 5/5 The Eggs-orcist - Pretty bloody good! 5/5 Sweets - GTFOH! 10/5 I'll be back.

This place is a vegan heaven!! Every time I'm in Melbourne, I have to come here. They always have something new on the menu. And having one meal here is not enough! The (vegan) pork bahn mi I got was the best bahn mi ever!

Smith & Deli is an absolute gem and easily one of Melbourne’s best spots for vegan brunch. From the moment we walked in, the vibe was buzzing and the food lived up to the hype. Food: We had the Gabagool and Briskly Business sandwiches — both packed with flavour, texture, and seriously satisfying fillings. The bread was beautifully fresh and fluffy, and each bite was perfectly balanced with savory layers and just the right amount of crunch (yes, those crispy potato bits were a game-changer). Drinks: For drinks, we enjoyed an Iced Latte with oat milk and agave syrup, and a Hot S’mores Chocolate. The iced latte was smooth and lightly sweet, while the s’mores hot chocolate was rich, cozy, and just indulgent enough without being too heavy. Atmosphere and Service: The setup at Smith & Deli is casual and fun, with great street-side views and a relaxed energy. Service was friendly and efficient, and the food came out quickly despite the busy vibe. Verdict: This is a must-visit for anyone into vegan food — even non-vegans will walk away impressed. Flavour-packed sandwiches, amazing drinks, and a chill Melbourne atmosphere. Highly recommend.
