"There’s so much variety at this vegan dining hall that wait staff often have to reassure diners that yes, it’s all plant-based. That includes the hot pastrami sandwich, the bacon-and-egg brioche roll, the salted-caramel cannoli, and the tiramisu donut. Chef-owner Shannon Martinez pioneered the cuisine in Australia and is known for cold-cuts, cheeses, and almond croissants that are almost as good as the real thing. Staff are cheery, laidback, and likely to have more than one piercing, and Martinez’s neo-goth style extends to a shoppable range of tees, tote bags, coolers, and cat-eye sunnies. Look out for ramen nights at more upscale sibling restaurant Smith & Daughters next door, when you can get impossibly creamy tonkotsu and sip yuzu highballs." - Ellen Fraser

"There’s so much variety at this vegan dining hall that the staff regularly has to assure customers that yes, it’s all plant-based. That includes the meatball sub, the black forest cannoli, the full English breakfast, and the seafood laksa. The setup is cafeteria-style, so you can load up your own tray and get the necessary fuel you’ll need to go vintage shopping on nearby Smith and Brunswick streets. Or get your vegan cold-cuts, cheeses, and almond croissants to go, and snack along the way." - ellen fraser

This place is a vegan heaven!! Every time I'm in Melbourne, I have to come here. They always have something new on the menu. And having one meal here is not enough! The (vegan) pork bahn mi I got was the best bahn mi ever!

This is the first time I've visited Smith + Deli since they moved from their old spot. I ordered: Iced chai - Not great, tasted watered down, looks watered down in the photo do ey? 2.5/5 Dirty chai - Pretty good, not the best I've had, not sure if you can get a larger serving but mine was quite small 4/5 Chips - Crunchy and well spiced with generous portion 4/5 Maury Ballstein - Yum 5/5 Paramgeddon - Very filling, a bit heavy for me, couldn't finish it 4/5 Egg Martinez - Nostalgic 5/5 The Eggs-orcist - Pretty bloody good! 5/5 Sweets - GTFOH! 10/5 I'll be back.

I’m not a vegetarian, but I wanted to try the sandwiches here since they were highly recommended. I ordered the Wiggum, which is a tofu cold cut sandwich, and it was pretty good. The flavor reminded me of a banh mi tofu sandwich, which I thought was a positive comparison. We also tried a tuna melt style sandwich from the menu; however, I found the flavor to be a bit too zesty and chive-heavy for my taste. On the plus side, the sandwich was toasted very well. The bread was decent but not the best I’ve had—it was somewhat chewy and crusty, but overall, it was fine. As for the wait times, they were quite long, around 15 minutes, and the store was pretty quiet, so I assume that long wait times are common. The store and deli have a cool vibe, and they offer a variety of other products as well.

My favorite vegan cafe. This is a cafe I visit every time I go to Melbourne. The chocolate chai is the best drink I've ever had. (Lately, the spice has been weaker, but I'm looking forward to drinking spicy chocolate chai again🫶) The food served changes depending on the time of day. Our favorites are egg martinze and scramble roll. We will visit every day during our stay in Melbourne except on the days the shop is closed. Thank you for opening early in the morning! 💘💘💘💘💘

Amazing amazing amazing sandwiches. Went for the meatballs sandwich (Maury Ballstein) and the hot pastrami toastie and oh my they were good! The meatballs are so fresh and yummy, made me so happy to eat a proper meatballs sandwich, and the pastrami toastie is just ginormous. We also had a caramello, which is delicious too, and a vanilla slice - classic smith + Deli - also delicious, and a very generous serve, perfect to share after a yummy sandwich. Will have to go back as all the sandwiches sound amazing. 🥰

We loved the food here, my partner ordered the Home alone toasty (Christmas dinner style toasty) and myself the Maury Ballstein meatball toastie and we had a side of crisps and a Raspberry Vanilla soda. Both toasties were the portion size of a sub, very generously filled and delicious. The food did take a while to come out but was worth it.
