I came to this building just to pick up an Amazon package, and as a Cuban who lived 27 years on that island-prison, I was shocked to see the bulletin board full of propaganda glorifying the Cuban regime and Che Guevara. The posters talk about a “model” healthcare system and a wonderful country, but that is simply not true. In Cuba, people die because there are no supplies, no medicines, and many times no doctors. Cuba is a dictatorship that represses those who think differently; there is no real freedom, and more than half of the population has fled the misery of communism whenever they’ve had the chance. Che Guevara, whose face you proudly display on a T-shirt, was responsible for the execution of many Cubans, including people persecuted for being different, for their ideas or their sexuality.
I deeply respect the freedom that this great nation gives us—the right for everyone to express what they believe and feel. But as a Cuban who lived under the claws of dictatorship, I also have every right to express my disappointment with a place that promotes lies and distorts the truth about what really happens in Cuba. For a diverse city like Portland, it’s disturbing to see an educational space presenting such a one-sided, romanticized version of a dictatorship that has caused so much pain. People who don’t know the reality of Cuba are being misled by this wall of propaganda.
