8 Best Parks in Houston

"A collaboration between The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art and architect Dan Phillips, Smither Park, in Houston's emerging East End, is an artistic venue for leisure-time activities. Here you'll find pieces designed and executed by more than 300 artists, many from Houston. The whimsical half-acre green space has an amphitheater, a memory wall, a meditation area, covered pavilion, swings, sculptures, and elaborate mosaics from recycled and recovered materials ranging from broken ceramics and bottle caps to tiles and sea shells." - Marcy de Luna

Smither park is a good park to go to during night or mornings, as it gets very hot during the day during the summer. No restrooms available, but great art and lots of things to look at. Scavenger hunts are available sometimes. Open dawn through dusk and not really crowded most of the time. Shade is available but all seating areas are outside of shade? I don't recommend a picnic hear but 100% bring water.

Google
Brilliant idea, nice park for all ages; we were two adults, there was a group of adolescents, and a couple of families with children. There is something for everyone! The park is small, but it is a lovely [free] experience. It is also well-kept in a quiet neighborhood near the University of Houston.

Google
Super cool place! There were two bench swings, so mainly an art attraction. The more you look, the more you see! Everything was very unique and different. All put together by random things made into beautiful pieces! Great for pictures also!

Miguel June

Google
What’s cool park. Art exhibit, with benches to relax on, or space where they possibly have performances. Free with ample parking. No restroom. Enjoy a picnic or just enjoy the effort that was made in making the art!

Google
I feel like Smither Park is the textbook definition of a "gem." Even on the cold, rainy day I visited, the park was a true feast for the eyes with all the way-cool mosaic art which was often fun and quirky, but at the same time also quite beautiful. Great stuff!

Google
Beautiful and well kept park with amazing art work. Although the area where the park is situated doesn’t look as good, but surprisingly this place is very well kept, maintained and beautiful for pictures. Kids would definitely love this place coz of it being so colorful, interactive, swings and ample open space. It’s a Well-kept secret in Houston city. Glad we visited this place.

Google
The park looks very clean and even though I went during the weekend it was pretty calm. Enjoyed looking at the different pieces on display and even though I didn't stay long since I was only visiting it gives off chill vibes to hang out.

Google
Fun and quirky mosaic park. The creativity and level of detail is impressive and I truly enjoyed walking around. I think you would notice different things every visit. If it was a better location, it would be 5 stars. Not sure of safety at night?

Yelp
This park is so cool! If you have ADHD, you'll have plenty to keep you busy. My kiddo and I hit the swings and had several cool photo ops.

Yelp
Was visiting Houston and wanted to do so some more last minute sight seeing before my flight so I stopped at Smither Park. When I first looked it up, I assumed it would be a lot bigger and figured at least I'd get to walk a part of it, however, it is a fairly small park but packed with lots of mosaic art. Smither park is a little area within what seemed to be a bigger neighborhood park however, I did not get the change to explore the larger grounds. Smither park is fenced in and facing a residential area which made me a bit apprehensive when I first entered as I wasn't sure if I was able to go in or not as there weren't any signs. But the fence was unlocked so why not. There didn't seem to be any designated parking area for the park and a lot of the street parking was full or had no parking signs. That being said I went pretty early in the day and was able to just park outside the fence. I am not sure if the park is usually busy. However, when I went I was the only one there. The park did not seem like it was very well kept up with, I could have just gone on an off day. However, I love mosaic work and seeing local art when traveling so I am very glad I went. The pieces were unique and beautiful. There were lots of good photo opportunities. They even had some areas you could sit and have lunch or just take in the artwork.

Yelp
What an amazing placing to be and meditate. This is a place that you can truly allow your mind to run wild and free while soaking up the beautiful art. Enjoy a fun scavenger hunt looking for specific elements within each art piece. In definitely left some feelings and thoughts there and took many deep breaths. This is special and it will speak to you. I hope you take some time to take it all in. There are some swings and a few places to sit. This is not your average park. Happy Yelping!!

Yelp
Really cool park and it is absolutely free! You can quickly walk through and see all the highlights or take time to look at all of the intricate mosaics on the back wall. The exhibit next-door is closed for renovations, however, if you go behind the park into the massive parking lot/warehouse you will see even more art projects.

Yelp
Definitely a walk of art, I had some time available so I decided to check out Smither Park, it claims to be Houston's first art-inspired green space, created by over 300 artists from around the world who have painstakingly adorned every inch with hand laid mosaic artwork.  Located in a residential neighborhood that requires taking a lot of lefts and rights and maybe a few u-turns to get here at least that was the case in my travel here. The entrance is a small latched gate with no admission, during my visit and my self-guided tour I found it to be mostly empty except for an elderly lady with a long haired chihuahua on a leash that was a little yappy, and although I stopped for a simple hello this little dog wasn't having it as her owner just smiled and nodded and then a young couple sharing a romantic encounter and embraced in a kiss during my entire visit which was impossible not to notice even though they were keeping it on the low. I would love to know the total number of mosaic tiles that are on display here maybe someone knows but probably not. It's seem there's no particularly theme just an array of expressionism and all are beautifully done. If you need a place that is quite and relaxing this might be the place to do that, there are a few tables and benches so grabbing a snack before arriving might be a good idea...

Yelp
Cool, free spot to check out. Beautiful mosaic art pieces throughout with tables for lunch if you so choose. It's small, but definitely worth the trip if you're in the area.
google avatar

Amanda P.

Yelp
Took my dog to this park. It's a lot smaller then expected but they do have a dog park nearby which was nice. I loved the decor. Very unique and artsy park. Had some good Instagram photo op areas.
google avatar

Susana M.

Yelp
Beautiful art park, I like even if it's to far from my Spring Branch home. It's very entertaining to much to see, my respect for the people who do the art work.
google avatar

Ericka S.

Yelp
Smither Park is a cool serendipitous discovery, and a great place to enjoy near The Orange Show. The colors are so vibrant and beautiful. The unique artworks are memorable and inspiring. Visiting the park and walking around is a wonderful way to escape city life and just take it easy.
google avatar

Sam W.

Yelp
Great spaced out park for kids to enjoy that's next to baseball fields! There's parking on the street and the sectional lots but if you want to be closer to the playground, probably best parking on the street! Semi new within a nice neighborhood area as well! Plenty of shaded areas and benches.
google avatar

Bailey R.

Yelp
This is seriously a hidden gem of Houston. For art lovers who also enjoy spending time outdoors, you've got to check this place out!! I couldn't spent all day walking around, looking at the little hidden treasures within each beautifully crafted masterpiece. I totally would've had it not been typical Houston weather this day - hot and humid AF. This would be a great place for a picnic! But heads up - no restrooms on-site not BBQ pits. Also, it's street parking and the park is kind of small, so don't expect to get a walk in or any other exercise that takes up a lot of space. Although I hear that doing yoga in the amphitheater can be fun!
google avatar

Goodness I.

Yelp
Came here on a very busy Sunday afternoon when there were a lot of people there and multiple events going on-wouldn't recommend that but it seems like a nice, small, simple park with art things to look at. Would make a long drive for it, but if you're in the area, it's worth going to see for a bit!
google avatar

Yelp
I love Smither Park and always will, it holds some amazing memoriesfor me. It's an ever evolving artistic mosaic gem in Houston. A must see.
google avatar

Mari T.

Yelp
What a gem! Beautiful mosaic. This is a great place if you are into art. Each piece is part of ceramic and items you find at your house like plates, soap trays, etc. I met a man who was working on one of the pieces of the pole and he said he was one of many artists in the community. It is a very peaceful place and it is free to explore. This is a must-see if you are visiting Houston.

Yelp
What a cute little park. Brought my family from out of state here and was absolutely in love with the uniqueness of the park. Such a cute place for a photo op. We saw a photo shoot being done of an artist and some of her art work.
google avatar

Nhu H.

Yelp
The park is pretty small but the mosaic art is breathtakingly beautiful. So many intricate details. Many photo ops here. No private parking so you do have to park along the side of the streets of the residential neighborhood. My fiancé and I came here with our dog on a Saturday afternoon and did not have any issues finding parking.
google avatar

Maria E.

Yelp
Smither Park is located right next to The Orange Show and is managed by the same folks. It is a small park full of mosaic sculptures, created by over 300 artists. There are several swings for your swinging pleasure. There is also a really cool amphitheater -- not sure what sort of shows they have there. If you love folk and community art, you'll appreciate this place. It's free and open daily, from dawn to dusk. On Saturdays, you may see artists working on their mosaic art pieces. They also occasionally hold events here -- be sure to sign up for their e-mail list. It's a quick stop although you can choose to spend more time here. I recommend combining it with The Orange Show next door, if you've never been. We had no issue finding parking on the street.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
If you're looking for something truly local, artsy, quirky, and fun, you've gotta make a stop at Smither Park. My friends and I visited after finding this on Atlas Obscura, and we were so glad we did. There was so much cool stuff in such a small space. I really don't even know how to describe this park--because it's also basically an interactive art installation. It is in a neighborhood, so be courteous to the neighbors. Just visit. It's fun.
google avatar

Christi W.

Yelp
Great place for plenty of photos! With tThe Orange Show next-door, it's a cool place you just don't want to miss!
google avatar

Sunny B.

Yelp
Smither Park is less of a nature park and more of a free outdoor museum/art project. The park is full of random pieces of mosaic-style artwork. It's small and doesn't take much time to walk through, just a couple of minutes is all you need. However, it does make for a unique photo opp! Parking is on the street within the neighborhood it's located in. The neighborhood itself isn't the nicest. There's also a more typical neighborhood park (Fonde Park) located just around the corner from Smither Park if you're interested in spending more time outdoors.
google avatar

Juliana L.

Yelp
Looking for something to do on a hot afternoon. Maybe this isn't the place to go, and that's simply because this place is so amazing! Don't go when it's hot so you can spend more time ooo-ing and aww-ing over the amazing craftsmanship. I chose to go in the heat of the day, and didn't get to spend the time I really could have here!
google avatar

Jane B.

Yelp
What a coooooool unique park! Wow! The whole thing is all mosaics! The day we went was the Art Bike Parade -it's a must see park y'all!
google avatar

Thuy P.

Yelp
If you are in Houston and haven't check this park out and you sure miss out. The park is small and free to the public. A lot of arts in the park and thanks to all the artists who put a big effort into it.
google avatar

Enna J.

Yelp
Great photo spot. The mosaic art is so impressive.

Yelp
Smither Park is a short walk from The Orange Show (less than a minute away). This past Saturday, my husband, our little girl dog and I decided to give it a visit (which is free). This park is beautiful and makes for a fabulous and unique backdrop for a photoshoot. Created by Dan Phillips the late Stephanie Smither, in honor of Mrs. Smither's late husband John H. Smither. Both Mr. & Mrs Smithers were supports of creative art and also board members of the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art (the non profit organization that maintains The Orange Show, the Beer Can House, etc). This park is just beautiful, with mosaics covering tables, benches, amphitheater and other various structures. You may notice that the concrete walls around the park are made up of random various items that include broken dishes, shells, utensils and other various trinkets. On the day we came, we happened to see two local artists (which under the supervision of Dan Philips, may talented artists come and contribute their talents to this park) working on something. However, their 3 dogs were just roaming free around the park. When they saw us (especially our little girl), then came charging at us and tried to hump her and my husband. They followed us throughout the park and so I was unable to get as many photos as I wanted, nor did I get to enjoy the park as much as I wanted. I would love to come back another time (hopefully when those dogs are not there....) to get some more photos of this place and really enjoy it for all its splendor. Please note that this park is located in a residential street so only (free) street parking is available.

Yelp
What a great surprise to find this fantastic park next door to the Orange Show. We knew it was too early to get into the Orange Show but we were nearby and wanted to see it from at least the outside. We did that and then spent a long time next door at this park. What a great artistic project by the Houston art community - the fantastical mosaics are super creative and really fun. You could spend a long time study each creation since they are so interesting. You must come see this place!
google avatar

Yelp
What A cute little neighborhood park. Great art made out of household items, throw away stuff, car parts, etc Love this place...nice backdrop for photos
google avatar

Barret L.

Yelp
We were heading to The Orange Show and had heard about this park next door. We wanted a place to stop and eat food we had picked up, so we thought this would be the perfect solution. There were plenty of tables, the weather was beautiful, and it was the perfect spot for a little picnic. I was entranced by this park! I enjoyed The Orange Show next door, but I think I liked this park even more. There was so much thought and creativity that went into its creation! Everything was done in the mosaic style, which made it all the more beautiful. There were several bench-style swings that I really enjoyed. There is a covered pavilion with unique chandeliers underneath, and each leg holding up the structure was made to look like a different type of tree concept. There was even what looked like a stage-type set up towards the back of the park, and I could imagine local music being played there from time to time. Overall a beautiful place that I loved exploring. A photographer's dream! I highly recommend visiting if you get the chance.
google avatar

Tina E.

Yelp
This is a very unique place. Everything is made form glass, ceramic and the like with a various amount of random trash that has been recycled into an Avant Gard Art installation
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
A friend told me about this park which is part of the orange show. Entrance is free and parking is in the street. They have a few places to sit which are part of the mossaic display. You can sit with catrinas on one table, with a dog on another table or on a throne. There is a small covered pavilion with an electric plug. The first time I went, we brought picnic chairs and hanged out in the pavilion as it was raining. There is a stage under a caved structure which I don't know what it's used for. It took me a second visit to see even more intricate details in the artwork. You'll see a piece of a Tabasco sauce bottle, broken china, sea shells, springs, marbles, forks, chains, you name it. This Instagrammable park is amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
This park is very unique. Made out of broken pots and dishes. They have scavenger hunt available. Great place to take pictures or enjoy a picnic.
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
Get your phones and professional cameras out! This marvelous park is very IG worthy. I have a huge heart for the arts, and this is definitely one of Houston's hidden gems. I visited on a warm, sunny day and it made the art extra sparkly and illuminating. The work is intricate, dazzling, and one of a kind. I was obsessed with the tea pots/cups and crabs lol :) To visit, it is free, for all ages, and street parking is available!
google avatar

Yelp
Had a great time , enjoyed the canoers on lake. A hidden gem great for walking and handicap people. Lots to do

Yelp
this is a must see in houston. the park isn't large but it packs in a lot of cool mosaics. would recommend stopping by. they have cool swings there too.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cool art/sculpture park in the middle of a neighborhood! Since the pandemic hit, I have started to explore my backyard--there are so many dope spots in Houston! This park is one of those dope spots. It offers beautiful and social media-worthy backdrops to get some cool photos. If social media is not your thing, it is still worth a visit, especially on a nice day in Houston!
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
This is a cute and cool place to visit . It threw me off a little being in the neighborhood but once your in, you totally forget. You will see the tiniest of details in the art pieces, it is very eye catching. Very beautiful. Fun for adults, kids, families.
google avatar

Bobby H.

Yelp
Nice places for pictures and photographer to shoot. Very cool artsy scene and murals. Cool place to check out!
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
I happened upon this place while visiting the neighboring Orange Show. Both are excellent examples of what makes Houston so special. The neat thing about this park is that some of the mosaics are still works in progress - I was lucky enough to go on a day where I could meet some of the awesome park artists. Plenty of street parking and easy to get to - just off I45 near UH. Check it out!
google avatar

Caylan J.

Yelp
Love this park! It's so unique and well put together. Awesome for photoshoots and park dates. It's a nice place to stop and hangout or have a picnic. It's usually not crowded and you can have it to yourself during the week. Very underrated spot in Houston!
google avatar

Taslima K.

Yelp
Beautiful arts... But, we saw some guys to smock-- "Weed"--next to the famous chair on end of right. That Spence is kind of hidden and best for them. In addition the parking lot is dark, don't have any road light. For my opinion Not good a place after evening.
google avatar

Curt C.

Yelp
Such an amazing park! Houston arts are the coolest! This is a park that really makes Houston unique. It's right down the street from the legendary Orange Show, but this one is free and open to the public. The park is behind a short fence. It's not a very big park, but it's long and has lots and lots of art in it. The art is mainly mosaics made from found or collected items. There are various themes and colors that flow through the park. Be sure to check out the skeletons playing chess. You can tell that thousands and thousands of loving hours have been spent on this project. The attention to detail is intense. The people who built this are visionaries- I was absolutely inspired after seeing this place. If you're looking for a place for selfies- this is it. Such weird designs and crazy patterns here make for a great spot to take photos. This park is more for admiring and maybe having a picnic at. I wouldn't try to get a soccer game or a baseball game started here- it's the wrong shape, and the grass looks pretty muddy. I think they're trying to get you to stay on the beautiful mosaic pathways. Parking is on the street, and free! Everything about the park is free.
google avatar

Dan H.

Yelp
There are not words to describe the incredible nature of this unique park. We have never seen anything like it and it's part of every description we give anyone about our visit to Houston. The park is long and skinny but the whole of it is covered by mosaic three dimensional art that is folk, funny, abstract, realistic, and colorful. Everything you can imagine is somehow represented here and it should really take hours to walk the length of it and admire each and every little thing here. We did not have that long so we had to run from front to back and back again, each time seeing new things that we had missed the first time. This guy is a genius and I recommend a visit here very very highly!
google avatar

Christopher H.

Yelp
I had a first date here 2 years ago, and over those two years we've been coming here to come see something new every time. Each art mosaic is unique and beautifully aesthetic. Recently in October I brought my now fiancé to this place where we had our first date those 2 years ago and I proposed. It is definitely a staple in our lives.
google avatar

Antonio H.

Yelp
Another day trip in the cityartist Dan Phillips worked alongside the late Stephanie Smither to design Smither Park in the memory of her late husband, John H. Smither. John and Stephanie were long-time supporters and collectors of self-taught art, as well as board members of The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. Inspired by the Orange Show's philosophy of promoting self-taught art, over 300 artists have contributed permanent mosaic masterpieces. A whimsical and inspiring place; a riot of art. Located adjacent to The Orange Show, Smither Park is a great place to bring family, friends for picnics, and a one of kind experience a day trip that will resonate long after you have left. On a nice day takes you a little closer to heaven.
google avatar

Whitney S.

Yelp
Fabulous and original quirky, private, Houston park minutes from the University of Houston. Shared/owned with the Orange Show. Artists come here regularly to create murals and colleges on walls, side walks, tables, benches, you name it! Everytime you come here you might honestly see something new and different. It opens at 10 AM and is free to the public. It would make a great date destination for those who enjoy vibrant local art.
google avatar

Kenneth L.

Yelp
Super cool park in Houston! It's an artistic park with tons of artwork all around. If you are looking for something to gram, definitely come check out this place. Parking is pretty easy since the park is located in a residential area. I spent about 30 minutes walking around and checking out all the cool art pieces. I'd say this place is a hidden gem and a low key spot to visit if you're a tourist in the area.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Now this is you place just don't come across every day especially just randomly out in the middle of the neighborhood. Was just killing some time and decided to look for a park nearby and lo and behold I found this place. Definitely recommend the place It's a bit far for me on the normal but I would like to take my kids by to see it there 12 and 15 But not a place you just take small children t but not a place you just take small children tooOnly open from Don to dusk.

Yelp
I'm so glad I decided to stop by Smither Park while I was in the area! It is located inside of a quiet neighborhood. There is plenty of parking along Munger St. You can't miss it, it immediately catches your eyes! There is a mural that runs along the back fence that contains such unique artwork with different sizes, shapes, textures, and colors. My favorite part is the dome shaped fish head with the disco ball beacon. It contains so many types of materials, fixtures, and colors! I'd love to know the artists inspiration or reason behind this work of art. Actually all the artwork gets you thinking! I also love that even the tables and swings were made into a work of art! I cannot possibly describe how unique and outstanding the artwork is at this park so you should definitely check this hidden gem out for yourself!

Yelp
What a cool little gem in an unsuspecting neighborhood. Definitely recommend to visit this art park and take time to marvel at the installations. Such a fun experience.
