The Best Farm-to-Table Food on a Road Trip Along the Maine Coast, April 2021

"I spent time at Severine von Tscharner Fleming's Smithereen Farm in the Pembroke area and experienced a hands-on, experimental saltwater farm: Fleming runs wild-crafting camps, sells wild-blueberry jam and homemade fish sauce, hosts guests in cabins and camping platforms, and cooks in an open-air, wood-fired kitchen where I helped shuck homegrown corn and ate apples from an abandoned orchard—an activist-minded model of a regional, value-added food economy." - Kevin West Kevin West Kevin West is a writer, food consultant, and “canning evangelist” (according to NPR). He’s the author of the cookbook “Saving the Season,” and his work has appeared in Travel + Leisure, Martha Stewart Living, Condé Nast Traveler, Bon Appétit, and Food & Wine. We attended the first farm dinner of the season on June 22, 2025, featuring a five-course, locally foraged meal prepared by the talented Rachel Alexandrou. The feast was hosted by Severine and her team on their incredible farm overlooking Cobscook Bay. More dinners are scheduled throughout the summer season, so be sure to check their website and reserve your spot!

Beautiful farm with an incredibly impressively diverse range of produce and projects! We came by for a farm tour which we enjoyed immensely! Lots of great information, very engaging and personalized to our interests/questions. Terran and Severine run an impressive operation and were extremely generous hosts. We hope to return to hike the trails that they pointed out, and maybe even work on the farm for a few weeks! Lots of variety in produce to check out at the farm store.

had a fantastic time visiting at Smithereen and seeing so many of their exciting projects. Taron was an excellent host - we learned a lot about myco culture, new growing techniques, their commitment to the land & community, and more. the summer kitchen is a really special place as well. can't wait to go back & hopefully spend a night or two camping out at the farm! Thanks for the guided tour!

Abundant seaside organic farm with interesting forage plants as well. Pick your own blueberries in season. Products available at the Farm Shop on Route 1.
