Smitty's Old Fashioned Butcher Review - Fort Lauderdale - Miami - The Infatuation

"Smitty’s is a butcher shop on the border of Oakland Park and Fort Lauderdale that feels like stepping into a time machine. It’s old school, to say the least. There’s sawdust on the floor, you take a number for service, and the staff wear ties. You can get a lot of great meat to cook at home, but we love this place for lunch, when you can grab deli sandwiches as well as some salads every day except Saturday (and Sunday/Monday, when they’re closed). They make great and affordable sandwiches like roast beef, pastrami, turkey, and just about anything else you can dream up with the ingredients you see inside the display case. It’s all to-go, so don’t plan to eat there. " - Ryan Pfeffer

Google
A gem in the middle of ft Lauderdale. Smitty's does everything old school and by the book. They offer absolutely the finest USDA Prime meats! Do not come here looking for anything less. They have an amazing variety of meats and options you will simply NOT find anywhere else. Two big ones that stand out for me are brains and camel meat. They have alligator and wagyu. Their sea food is amazing! They have Amish rolled butter! They make sausages In house! everything is old school and how it should be! when you need premium meats, go here. oh, they have good wine selection as well, to pair with your meat

Google
Great spot with really good cuts of meat. These ny strips were about 2 inches thick and rich with marbling. Owner came out from behind the counter to talk to me and personally thanked me for my business. Great place.

Jeff Heiges

Google
The short red bald guy brings this review down to a one. Does not know how to treat people or service guests

Google
Been going to Smitty's for years and always had good experiences with the team there. Great meat selection and good prices.

Google
Absolutely love Smitty’s. The meat is outstanding, the prices very fair. The employees are always so kind and welcoming. Thank y’all for always being so amazing. Support local. Support Smitty’s.

Google
They were super nice. The meat was absolutely amazing. It’s by the slab so I ended up with more than I wanted and almost paid $100. The meat was good. I had no problem devouring it!

My wife and I stopped to see what Smitty's had to offer. While exploring the store, we ended up in the back where there was a big political poster along with the words "I'm voting for the felon.". It certainly is within their right to display whatever they want in their store. We chose to leave, because it's also our right to choose to spend our money at establishments that reflect our values.

Yelp
What can be said ?? Excellent quality of meats and selection. I moved away and miss them terribly! Everyone that worked there was amazing and knowledgeable. There is nobody like Smittys

Robyn P.

Yelp
Unbelievable meat, wine, pasta, deli counter! Try chicken salad, steak . Run don't walk.

Yelp
This is an awesome place. I was treated very respectfully. Yes their prices are high---but well deserved for the service and quality of product I received. I can't believe being called "sweetie" or "sir" would warrant a one star review. Thank god the politically correct "woke" world is going away. This is a small and awesome butcher shop. I just found it, and I love their service and products. OUTSTANDING. To the person who objected being called sweety---get a life Sweety or Sir. This is an endearing term. If you are offending, too bad. Do NOT try to hurt a wonderful small business like Smitty's. This is a GREAT store and deserves all of our patronage.

Yelp
Food is superb, service is better. Ambiance...it's a butcher shop, but it has more of a butcher shoppe feel,

Yelp
As a foodie & home chef, I've searched South Florida everywhere for an authentic NJ type butcher shop to no avail. There are obviously quality markets with butcher shops that I have found but I was looking for old school. After the never-ending search, I was told go to Smitty's. I am so glad that I did. Nestled in a corner of Coral Ridge just off university this charming little store takes me back to when I grew up. From the sawdust on the floor to the unbelievable selection of beef there is no place like it in South Florida. He is "PRICEY" but you get what you pay for. Been looking for good quality Veal cutlets for 26 years who knew they could be found here $35.00 a lb for milk fed veal cutlets is pricey so they better be good. When cooked they were like butter and worth the price point. NY Strip "PRIME" $35.00 a lb also was the best steak I've cooked at home in years. Their options are endless, and the staff was super friendly as I asked questions for future purchases. They have everything and then some and if the rest of their quality mirrors what I recently purchased, I may never shop elsewhere. My highest recommendation.

Brian L.

Yelp
One would think any good butcher shop would gladly cut a chateaubriand tenderloin (for Wellington) to the customer's specifications. NOPE, NOT SMITTY'S! It was either take what they had pre-cut on display (too small) or purchase the entire tenderloin tail. I took my business to the Whole Foods butcher who gladly took out an entire tenderloin and cut it to my specifications (center cut, approximately 8 inches in length). I recommend taking any special orders somewhere else and don't bother with Smitty's!

Yelp
There is no better butcher shop in South Florida than Smitty's. The staff is amazing and incredibly knowledgeable. The meat is the very best. Always fresh and trimmed perfectly. The wine selection is top notch, whether your budget is $20 or $1,000. And don't forget to pick up one of the homemade pie's.

Daniel D.

Yelp
This is the only place to buy fresh quality meat. Dave and his team and professionals and always ready to assist with suggestions or help. From fresh cut meats to great deli to specialties, you simply cannot beat Smitty's.

Yelp
I was in the mood for some roast beef. My girlfriend said that we needed to get a good quality roast and suggested that we go to the butcher that her mother has been going to ever sent she can remember. So we drove out to Smitty's. It's kind of a small place but that's OK. They have a large inventory of wines, pastas, sauces, and they have a small section of produce. The meat selection is fantastic and just looking at all the different meats you know it's fresh. I have to go back and get some of their stuffed pork chops because they looked amazing! We told the butcher what we were looking to make and he suggested one of the roasts and we decided that that would be perfect. The price was a tad bit more than Publix, but I would rather pay a tad bit more to get the quality of meat that we did then to get the subpar meat that they serve at my Publix. As the butcher was wrapping up our meat, I looked down and saw that they had old fashion licorice for sale as well. I am a sucker for licorice and I bought a bag of black licorice and red licorice because really, life is short! We took the roast home and made it and it was absolutely fantastic! You could really taste the quality difference and that this kind of meat was so much better than anything in the local grocery stores. I will definitely go back to Smitty's when I'm looking to purchase high quality meats whether it's for a special occasion or a holiday or just because I want it.

Yelp
My moms use to take me here as a kid. The place looks the same. So classic. I love it. The variety they keep in stock is way beyond my basic knowledge. I think the prices are definitely fair for the quality. Will be back once I do some more research and up my knowledge lol

Yelp
You know I am not really sure what's happening in this world lately, however customer service and small mom and pop hometown courtesy has gone by the wayside. I called today to see if I could place an order for Christmas. I was told that they were no longer taking orders because today was the last day. I said ok, but I am speaking to you and it's today. This was at 5:04 pm. I was told "well, we close at 5 and it's 5:04 so I am sorry, you can come and stand in line." This just struck a nerve with me in the sense that I was about to order a 15lb standing rib roast. I have spent thousands of dollars in this shop, including a recent entire wagyu rib roast that neared 1,000.00 in one sitting and have always been treated well when coming in. I felt like this was out of character based on my experience yet indicative of how folks are treated. I will take my business elsewhere.

Yelp
A real old-fashioned butcher shop everything here is top notch and first choice. They are priced appropriately for high-quality so don't come here if you are looking for something on the cheap. The nice thing here is they do lunch sandwiches which are great for about seven dollars. They cut the meat fresh off the block and use super fresh ingredients. They have unusual cuts year and will carve up anything you want any way you like. Not for your average shopper but if you want high quality meats this is the place to come.

Yelp
Normally 5/5 stars but NOT this day! There's always wine on clearance and every once in awhile the wine is skunk'd. I always call to let them know, bring in the empty bottle when I can, show them what it was and get a credit (usually $5-$10 a bottle). I bought 4 bottles of a 2013 Pinot Grigio ($5 a bottle) and 1 bottle of Italian red ($10). My wife and I opened a Pinot Grigio and it tasted horrible. We opened the remaining 3 one at a time. ALL bad. They were undrinkable. I called Smitty's right away and spoke to a courteous older gentleman. He apologized and said "it happens, bring 'em back and we'll credit you. We stand behind our products." I asked if we should bring the bottles back with the remaining wine in them or empty the bottles. He said to empty them because there was nothing they would do with bad wine. I found time last week to bring the 5 bottles in with my 9 year old daughter @ 4pm. As I was putting the empty bottles on the counter I heard a comment about what I was doing from a gentleman behind the counter. I presume it was the owners son? I've been shopping at Smitty's for over 20 years and he's never been in a good mood to chat or even show a smile, so I do not even know his name. He said I wouldn't receive a credit because I didn't bring back the bottles with the remaining "bad" wine in them. I didn't want to cause a scene with my 9 year old daughter over a $30 credit so I told him it's fine. I didn't want to argue that I've never had to bring bad wine back full and recorked. I did mention that I called after opening all the bad bottles and the gentleman I spoke to said to empty them and bring back the bottles. He had no response. I'm VERY disappointed in the customer service of Smitty's today. Maybe he was having a bad day? Who knows... There was such a better way to handle this situation from a business owners standpoint. He could've had a conversation with me. Maybe offer half a credit? Maybe no credit but speak to me in a kind manner, not rude and snarky like I was trying to scam him for $30. I am/was a customer who usually spends $60 a pound on filets for a family of 4! Nevertheless, I don't know if I'll ever go back to Smitty's. We have many options in this digital/technological age with online services, Fresh Market, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc.... Employee Narcisso has been a wonderful employee to deal with over the years, if I decide to stop buying my meats and wine from Smitty's, I'll miss his joyous personality and warm smile every time I walk through the door.

Cheryl M.

Yelp
So I'm not going crazy, it does say there hours are until 6, very crappy customer service I got there at 5 on the dot and not open the door.
google avatar

Jenelle A.

Yelp
Absolutely the worse customer service. I called many times and got a busy signal . I did understand that they were only taking orders over the phone due to COVID. I waited outside and tried to make a phone order . When one of the employees came out to fulfill another customers order I tried to get his attention . He very rudely said "you have to call" . I told him his phone lines were not open .. his reply ... " well we are busy and you got to wait ". Instead of apologizing and taking my number to call me back . He just ignored me . Wouldn't send my dog to do business here .

Yelp
Great new find!!!! Just moved to the beach. During the lock down due to the corona Virus We did curb side pick up Veal cutlets..... AMAZING Best we have had in 20 years. Since relocating from NYC Looking forward to our "real butcher shop" Thank u Chris

Manny M.

Yelp
This has to be probably one of thee best Butcher shops I've ever been in! This place was absolutely amazing! I purchased some incredible A5 Wagyu Japanese strip and picked up an American waygu strip.
google avatar

Marqus R.

Yelp
I've found Smitty's amongst the very best for meats. Expensive? Yes, but worth it. You can get cheaper cuts at Publix but once you trim the fat and other garp off their meats you end up with not only the same amount of meat but a much more inferior cut of it. The one thing I love about Smitty's is the old time sawdust on the floor. It makes me feel like I'm in the real thing, sort of harkening me back to the days of my youth when super markets were for canned goods and butcher shops were where you had to go to buy your meats. Also there is a matter of greater selection. You can't get elk, American Lamb, gator, various cures of bacon & etc. at your ordinary super market. You also can't get the courteous attention, service and willingness to do specialized cuts. I don't know why the name heading is Smitty's Old Fashioned Butcher Shop of "Coral Ridge" because this store is in Oakland Park.
google avatar

Yelp
The best butcher shop thus far! The only meat and fresh sides I will ever eat! I've been coming here since I was in school I'm now 37! My dads always would bring home fresh cut steak and bbq and still does till this day! The rice pudding, ham salad, spinach, tuna salad, twice baked potatoes and my gosh the stuff mushrooms amazing! Everyone here knows my family and I by name great service! I will always support this family owned business! oh ya the stuff pork chops fire!!

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Most flavorful meat in town. Burgers exceptional but can't complain about anything I've purchased from them.
google avatar

Rock W.

Yelp
As someone who looks real gay and walking in hand in hand with my wife we didn't experience an homophobic employees. I thought everyone was super friendly and knowledgable. They have a great selection of meats. With every item we inquired about we were provided with cooking tips which I loved! Tip: the ribs and a few other items were frozen which I wasn't too happy about. I'll only be back for the more exotic/hard to find meats.

Ali D.

Yelp
The only place is South Florida to get fresh milk fed Vela chop. Amazing section of meats
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Smitty's has been around for over 40 years. The sawdust is no longer on the floor but the remainder seems unchanged. The meat selection is extensive, as is the wine, cheese and pate selection. The butchers are knowledge and the presentation professional. The downside is the price; even for a premium butcher and quality meats it's hurtful.
google avatar

Marc S.

Yelp
They're great meat market an old-fashioned independent meat market that has every kind of kind of mean you could imagine including very very exotic meats you could say including alligator are strange all kinds of organ meats frozen lots of different things including view liver kidney who knows alligator But if you're looking for a custom cut of meat you're looking for a good ribeye or some other kind of steak this is the place I would recommend and they're happy to cook your meet anywhere you would like
google avatar

Lorrie W.

Yelp
Reminiscent of my early days in Philadelphia, Smittys has sawdust on the floors and butchers who know the business. With top shelf meat and advice I seem to always get best results. Advice is often given by other customers too, as they wait for service- masked and socially distanced as best as can be. I like how I never have to worry about anything but making those great flavors look appealing. I drive about a half hour from Deerfield passing many other places that have meat in the case and appreciate the quality and human interaction I get from pointing to a product and having the butcher say, "this one or this one." Thanks, Smitty.

Steve D.

Yelp
Best of the best is what you can expect from Smittys butcher stop. Wether it's the service or their products you get the best every time. You will pay for this you know. Sticker shock is the norm, but my $45 per pound tenderloin roast was the best I ever had. I will gladly pay a bit more for what you get. Know if they would just pick up the phone. Great place, great people
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
We are transplants from NJ and we were looking for a great butcher to match the quality of the pork chops I get from my butcher there, to prepare my Pork Chops Oreganata in a Rosemary Gravy. Found fabulous chops here. Many thanks for the nostalgia upon entering and for tremendous quality. Supermarkets cannot compare!
google avatar

Michael Z.

Yelp
We have been visiting David and his team for years, anytime we are looking for some of the best beef, pork, poultry and specialty foods. The floors are covered in sawdust giving a barn type at atmosphere. Grab a number from the counter and wait till they call you. Everyone is friendly and more than willing to give advice or storage. David is one proud purveyor and it shows in the meats he selects. Another hidden secret of this place is the wines he carries, a very wide variety of all types that wines. David is also quick to offer suggestions based on food and taste. Gotta throw one more tip in, he has genuine wager beef, it will cost you what it's worth but he has plenty. Sorry one more tip of something I really enjoy... Dry aged beef, it is fantastic when cooked perfectly. Enjoy!
google avatar

Susie B.

Yelp
One of the few jewels in the crown of Oakland Park. Finest restaurant quality Prime meats ... traditional and exotic...a nice variety of wursts, tasty salads and side dishes, great selection of wines, and incredibly delicious stuffed pork chops. And thank you, Tessa, for your gracious assistance. Plenty of outdoor parking.
google avatar

Patrick G.

Yelp
We drove all the way from Hollywood to Smitty's in Fort Lauderdale during the pandemic. We called ahead to make sure they were open (they were open, only doing curbside, which frankly is ideal as our muscles have atrophied from sitting on the couch watching Netflix for an entire month). They politely took our order over the phone and delivered it immediately. What a great place and what excellent service! We will definitely make the drive out there again and recommend to others. Hopefully our level of cooking will be good enough for this glorious cut of pork shoulder.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Best Brisket for smoking in SoFla. A real butcher shop right down to the sawdust on the floor.

Yelp
Kinda realizing I'm throwing out 5ers like singles at monroes on my 21st.... I'll try in advance to add some unis and tunis at some point. This was unplanned, I was driving by and caught "butch"'out of the corner of my eye on a detour to get from Ftl to wpb. I popped a risky uturn, threw up a ‍ to the people in cut off and proceeded inside. It's kinda small, but actually a perfect size. The right, and for the length of the store front, is this display cooler. It starts with prepared foods, and progresses further and further into the realm of "what's that? How much? From where?" It ends with a teasing display of a Kobe steak that twists the nipple at $250 a lb (if I remeber correctly) There's steaks, ground meet, sausages, and exotic game as well. Pretty sure I read llama, ostrich, venison, and raptor. The left side has a nice wine section, a small vegetable section, and then a freezer with a Ton of sausages. Polish, Amish, etc. I picked up something from South Africa, some garlic knots and a water. The counter staff is particularly helpful. Considering this was impromptu, I wasn't trying to spend too much, and just said to him "what's he beat way to spend $20." I just posted my kidney on The Silk Road so once it sells, I'm heading back for that kobe

Yelp
I'm in love with the smell of an old-school butcher/meat counter. The wine selection is top notch for a neighborhood stalwart in South Florida. The meat was fantastic, well marbled, concentrated beefy & succulent, and you will pay a premium for it, but I like to keep it local when I can. Nothing groundbreaking or cutting edge about the place or the various side items they offer but that's the point & I'm thankful for it. You can get quite a few items that you won't get at your local grocery store. Game as well. A couple of the guys behind the counter sure do have some personality, a few eyebrows were raised, but again that's the beauty of this kind of place. They are becoming so few and far between, cherish the ones that still exist by shopping them as often as you can & sharing the gospel.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
A local favorite, not many of these left. You do pay a bit of a premium but trust me you wont be sorry. Worth every penny. Great wine selection as well. Both dave the owner and Dostin have magnificent palates and can help you find a great bottle to pair with your meat selection. Thank you for serving our community for all these years!
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
Nothing here wowed me. I must say I came here with a friend who was buying but I didn't buy anything, because nothing looked especially good enough for me to undo my purse strings. I've seen better deli counters in Publix. The store is cluttered kitchy looking which is quite cute. On the right hand the butcher counter, left hand the mish mash sundries. On the left hand side a bit back couple of large glass door freezers with a willy nilly selection of not very well labeled packages of meat which I poked about in and saw some interesting meats labeled on the display boxes but when you pick up the packs don't have the cut named on the package. Fuck that. . Another disappointment for me.
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
old-school, legit, delicious! From a tailored wine selection to the A5 Wagyu beef to sawdusted floors - authentic and delightful!
google avatar

Tiffany E.

Yelp
I expected a little more. It was really crammed inside. The service was not the best. My husband loves the sausage. And they looked like they had a selection of wine.
google avatar

Kitchen Sales C.

Yelp
Don't believe the "Bad / Racist Reviews" . I have been coming here for decades and have never seen anyone treated badly. They are busy- True but always helpful. Honest about the product and good product as well.

Tagliatelle C.

Yelp
The meats are excellent, availability is very good to excellent, sort of a one stop shop for meat lovers. Produce is limited but good (if you're on your way to Fresh Market or Whole Foods, you'll do better). The refrigerated area has some overpriced commodity products. The rest of the store can be totally ignored without risk. It's brands/wines/oils you've never heard of for good reason. If they were known brands they'd be known to be low quality products that should be selling for a low quality price, not Smitty's price. Then there's the customer service. I think there's 2 types of customers here. Those that are meat lovers and put up with the staff who have an inflated view of themselves. Those that come ocassionally for those few cuts of specialty meats they need, keep one's mouth shut and get out as quickly as possible. If you're expecting trained butchers, forget it. Standard cuts, steaks, chops roasts are fine. Anything beyond that forget about anything other than a high potential to have an unpleasant experience as they gang up on you. The cooking knowledge stems back to the 1950's. These guys haven't been trained in anything other than the basics. Telling them what you plan to do with the meat will get you the standard cut -- it's all they know and, just ask, they know everything. My wife and I used to go weekly when we moved here 20 years ago. We now go perhaps twice a year. We gave up one stop shopping for less efficient but a more pleasant shopping experience. Stores now exist in Broward that can easily compete with Smitty's. But you have to go to a few of them. What you get is better product, lower cost and a far more pleasant customer service experience.

Derek J.

Yelp
Way over-priced and arrogant. I called ahead for a standing rib roast and I asked them for help on the size for four people. They told me a three rib would be fine. When I went to pick it up it was way too big and expensive $245. I asked if they could cut it down, and they told me they could but they would have to charge me for the whole thing. The guy actually was smirking at me when he told me that. I will never got back. Its really a used car dealership.

Wendy M.

Yelp
While they have quality meats much better than other places, I do not believe they are open anymore. They don't answer their phones. When I called the number leads to a fax machine so I sent a fax requesting a call for an order when they're available. An hour later, I called back and the automated message comes on saying the number is no longer in service.
google avatar

Devon R.

Yelp
Home and professional chefs, this is it. Boutique butcher shop that sells quality cuts, and accompaniments for a decent price. You do not see these places around anymore. Highly recommended for the WOW factor in your dinner. Has a nice wine selection with a few bottles priced REALLY well. Ample parking, good selection, fresh produce and a various pasta selection.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Wow! A high end meat market that aims to please. Very high end! Nice variety of specialty items. Lots of beef, sausage, bacon, pork, some seafood and a freezer with the likes of duck, pheasant, venison, etc. very professional and cheerful staff. A tad pricey.

Yelp
Love this place.Old school butcher great quality meats and poultry, great wines from 10&up.Always get great service especially from Chessa! Who also bakes outstanding pies Owner is super nice guy always says hello and helpful. They treat everyone with respect.

Yelp
Just had another amazing steak. I did nothing to it - just heat and eat. No seasonings. No tricks. The flavor was all marbling, age, and cow. Perfection! The fellas who work at Smitty's are a joy, I never leave quickly and always have a great chat. I've asked the dumbest questions and gotten patient advice - if they sell it, they can cook it and are happy to teach you.

Allen M.

Yelp
If you are looking for quality meat there is nothing better. Nothing. Some of the reviews on Yelp are hilarious and written by people who clearly don't understand what it means to get meat at a REAL butcher shop and not the grocery. Yes it's small. Cramped. And you might have to wait a little. But if you want quality cuts of meat you go here. If you don't care then go to the grocery.
