NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"For sultry live music in Hell’s Kitchen, So & So’s is a piano bar in the Romer Hotel. They’ve got velvet seats, big banquettes, Broadway talent on the keys, and the cocktails come from someone who used to be a backup dancer for Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga." - will hartman

I loved this place. The food and live music are great, the atmosphere is extremely laid back and perfect for relaxing with a few friends and drinks. I recommend the waffle chips + onion dip as an appetizer, and their burger entree was fantastic as well! We sat toward the back in one of the circular booths and could easily hear each other speaking over the music. They also had a tv set up so you could watch the live performance in the other room. Overall, I think this place is great. Just make sure you don’t miss the secret red door when you’re trying to find it. 👀

There’s a $10 cover charge per person to watch, but on Sundays they don’t even play the piano and have a DJ set instead, which I think they should’ve mentioned before, especially considering it’s called a Piano Bar so that’s what people would expect (at least not a charged DJ set). There weren’t many interesting drinks and the two we got were on the sweeter side and harder to finish. Not really a special place to go, but maybe during the piano nights it’s better.

This is a cashless establishment despite it not being listed anywhere or communicated to me when I arrived. Me and my friend came to dine and had a good time until it came time to pay the bill. We were told we couldn’t use cash and the gentleman walked away. I asked him to come back as it was the only form of payment I had and he needed to give me a solution. He had an attitude and said he could get the manager. The manager came over and told me the same and I asked them to tell me where was it listed or when was it communicated to me that I could not use cash to pay my bill. They couldn't provide that information to me. He asked if I could pay with my card. I said no We took out cash so as not to pay with two cards or have to Zelle one another or anything extra. He tells me they can’t take cash because they don’t even have a drawer and they can’t give us change. I said that’s fine because we don’t need any change. He asked again if we could pay with card. I asked him if he would like me to leave the establishment to go put my cash back in my account so that I could pay. He begrudgingly took my cash and told me to wait so that it could be counted. He came back and said we were ok to leave. The entertainment was great. The food was ok at best and the lack of communication from the venue was poor. I don’t mind paying with my card if that’s policy and stated as such. It was not my responsibility to read their minds if they don’t post it anywhere or say anything. I received text confirmations and instruction on how to get into the restaurant once I arrived. “We are a cashless establishment” could have been included anywhere in those messages. I went to the website before making the reservation and after I went home and nowhere is it listed. It was very unnecessary to pretend I was somehow in the wrong or inconveniencing them. Do better.

Such a fun bar with live music! We enjoyed the piano set from 7-10pm. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun, people taking in the performance with a dash of audience participation, and it isn't overwhelming so that you can't have a conversation. Cocktails were great. I loved the thank you 15, and the coffee bodega one! Ramen fries were a fun snack too (I think every table had some!). Update: It seems they have introduced a 90min /2hr limit on tables. Our server initially told us we needed to leave after we were there for 40mins but he seemed to change his mind when we ordered another round.

Beautiful and romantic ambiance. Make sure you’re seated in the main stage room. Overall the place was smaller than expected as it is an intimate venue. Live singing from 8 pm onwards was incredible! Food and drinks were average esp considering the higher price point. Pics make the venue look bigger than it actually is

I stopped by for the Talia event on a Friday night and loved the piano bar, which is hidden behind an unmarked door with velvet ropes—giving it a speakeasy vibe. The decor was beautiful, instantly transporting me to the Great Gatsby era. We were seated in the front row, enjoying the best view of the night. The cocktails were fantastic—my favorites were the Bodega Cat, Thank You 15, and Piano Man. The food was decent as well; we enjoyed the smoked and wild salmon tartare and sesame tuna. However, the Brussels sprouts were overly salty and drenched in sauce. Now, regarding the service: our server was attentive, but it seemed the kitchen was backed up. We waited at least ten minutes after finishing the Brussels sprouts for the tartare to arrive, followed by another ten minutes before receiving the tuna. This interruption was noticeable since we were sitting in the front row. A peculiar incident occurred when we were asked to move to the bar after placing another cocktail order ten minutes after the show ended. I later learned about the 90-minute rule, but this was never communicated to us upon arrival. It left a bad taste since we could have decided differently before ordering. Once at the bar, the bartender seemed more interested in chatting with another guest than attending to our request for the check. After reminding her twice, we finally received our check when I asked the manager for assistance. As a resident of Hells Kitchen, I'm rooting for this piano bar. However, they need to address the negative feedback soon before it becomes a larger issue.

Five stars across the board! We needed a quick-ish dinner before a broadway show and this was perfect. We had cocktails, snacks, and entrees in about 45 minutes and didn’t even feel rushed. Our waitress was efficient and friendly. Would recommend the pigs in a blanket, the Brussels sprouts, the seared tuna and the crispy polenta. The old fashioned was really nicely done and the cocktail in the coffee cup was super flavorful.

Yelp
This was our second visit, this time on a Wednesday night around 9:45pm. The live music runs from 7pm to 10pm, and you can check out the lineup on their website. I noticed that they feature a variety of artists, each offering different genres, which keeps things interesting. Tonight's performance was a two-string ensemble, which isn't my usual go-to for live music, but I still enjoyed it. On my last visit, there was a drag queen show, which was a unique and entertaining experience! The bar has a beautiful ambiance, and the service was decent. I ordered the "Bodega Cat" this time, which was delicious--creamy and sweet, like a coffee drink. Last time, I tried "She's from LA," which was stronger and still sweet. It seems like they might have adjusted the drinks to be less potent since my boyfriend's drink was also less alcoholic this time. I personally miss the stronger mix from my previous visit, but that's just my preference. My friend who also visited thought her drink was too strong, so maybe they made some adjustments to cater to mainstream tastes.

Yelp
Sam on the piano was amazing 10/10 Asia our server was amazing 10/10 Drinks were delicious 10/10 But look, The Food. Was. Awful. Almost inedible. They should stick with just bar food or even just a bowl of popcorn. Thankfully we didn't get kicked out at the ending of our 90 min reservation because that's really when it started to get really fun. We genuinely enjoyed ourselves and I would come back - just probably not to eat.

Yelp
This spot opened recently in my neighborhood and I discovered it from a chalkboard sign outside the neighboring hotel. They should advertise more openly! Located behind a nondescript door that looks like it leads nowhere, this is everything you want in a piano bar-- super loungey atmosphere, exceptionally talented musicians, and great drinks! Will be coming back regularly!

Yelp
Food was decent, but small. Even after the mains we had to order more food because of the size of the portion. My frustration with this place, though, was that the show time and the dinner seating is not lined up at all. They don't tell you during the reservation process, but there is a 90 minute limit on your table and this is STRICT. And, you can't retire to the bar or anywhere else, you're literally kicked out. As the show started 1 hour after advertised time, it literally was just getting going as my $300 check arrived. It was totally not worth that for the food, and we didn't get to enjoy the show at all. When asked if they could make space for us somewhere else, they said no and could basically care less that we weren't getting the experience advertised. We had an out of town guest and it was quite an embarrassing experience. Go to Dizzy's or Birdlands for a dinner and a show as at least they time the seatings with the sets. You still have to leave at the appointed time, but it's timed so that you get what you paid for.

Yelp
Piano bar means a place with a piano, yes, but also with singers and a lively creative energy. Why don't they have singers here? My friend and I arrived at their velvet rope making their hidden door at 6:30p on a Friday night - reservation required - and the place was more than half empty. The hostess explained that it was a strict "90 minute experience" and then we'd need to leave promptly. Quite the welcome?! I ordered an aviation on tap cocktail which was great. The doll-sized high priced appetizers were above average with expert garnishes. We liked the tuna tartare tacos and the oysters Rockefeller were worthy of a Rockefeller - the best I've had. Many places with live music charge top dollar for the food and drinks because they're also covering the performers. Here there's the higher prices but only one man quietly playing standards on a piano. He never even spoke to the audience. This hidden-away showroom done up in retro reds and lights could be cool but comes off more Las Vegas corporate than opulent louche. Only come here if you're sure there will be a singer strong enough to warm up this place or if you're a mega oysters Rockefeller connoisseur. This is the straightest piano bar I've ever been to and I don't mean that as a compliment.

Yelp
The vibe was fantastic, with music that set the perfect tone for the night. The space captures that classic Old New York feel but with a modern, elevated twist, right in the heart of Hell's Kitchen. Cocktails were well crafted and didn't disappoint. I'll definitely be returning!

Yelp
I live across the street and finally went here for a drink to try it out. Love it! Super cute space that gives speakeasy/martini bar vibes. Love the live music. Need to go back to try out the menu. Definitely make a reservation and try it out.

Yelp
We booked a table for 6:30 PM, expecting the show to start at 7:00 PM, as stated on the website. When we arrived, we were told we only had 90 minutes at the table and could move to the bar afterward. The show didn't actually start until 8:00 PM, and we were asked to leave at 8:05 PM, after hearing only two songs. When we raised the issue with the manager, there was no apology, just a remark about the show starting at 7:30 PM if you click through the site. Despite the half hour delay on start and empty tables, we were still kicked out, leaving us disappointed. Not a place we'd return to.
