On a grey, rainy afternoon, a bowl of velvety smooth soba noodles in warm, clear broth comforts the soul. Prior to this visit, I’ve not had soba of this textural quality. Easily slurped and with a slightly firm chew, each silky strand is mildly salted by the broth.
Other dishes that deserve a mention are the soft and creamy sesame tofu, tororo (a mucilaginous puree of yam) on rice, and the hot barley soup that is served towards the end of the meal to be mixed with the remaining soba broth. It is an ingenious way to reheat the broth and add a layer of depth at the same time. Dessert of warabi mochi and tea concluded the meal beautifully.
