"No bigger than a subway car, Socarrat packs the majority of their patrons on bar stools around a communal table. The idea here is that they do paella the way it’s done in Spain, as one big family. The smart move is to get a small plate or two to start and get those taste buds warmed up for the main attraction. The paella dishes are served in a huge pan for your party to split. It looks like an intimidating amount of food but the second you start getting in there, it goes fast. Make sure you scrape off the crunchy rice (socarrat) at the bottom, that’s the real good stuff. You’re most likely going to have to wait a little for your table, but they’ll take your number and call your cell when your time comes. While you wait, we highly recommend Peter McManus, a solid Irish pub on the corner of 19th and 7th that always seems to be playing either Oasis or Rage Against The Machine. Also, keep in mind that this isn’t a cheap meal. Each paella is in the $20-25 range per person, not per paella. Lastly, don’t be surprised if you’re tastefully pushed along during prime time. On one occasion, we were gracefully asked if we wouldn’t mind finishing our cocktails on their private back patio. They even offered up a round of after dinner drinks on the house. Not a bad way to end a meal. Food Rundown Tocino A quality combination of braised pork belly, roasted potatoes, and apples. We’ve had this a couple times and it’s been consistently solid. Calamar a la Plancha They really know how to work the squid here at Socarrat, so do yourself a favor and start out with their griddled squid with parsley and garlic. Unless you’re planning on rocking the Arroz Negra paella as your main, because then that’s just too much squid. Gambas al Ajillo Sizzling hot shrimp with garlic and hot-red peppers, this refreshing dish has a nice spicy zest to it that makes it one of their more popular small plates. Paella De Pescado & Mariscos A paella containing fish, shrimp, cuttle fish, mussels, cockles, clams, squid, and scallops. Paella Socarrat A paella containing chicken, fish, beef, shrimp, cuttle fish, green beans, mussels, and cockle clams. So good. Helpful hint, let the rice sit in the hot pan for a minute or two before digging in so it gets extra crunchy. Arroz Negro Paella A paella containing fish, squid ink, shrimp, squid, and scallops - this is the paella that Socarrat is most famous for. The garlic aioli that comes on the side with this one is hard to put down." - Andrew Steinthal

Ordered the classic Valencia and squid ink paella. All the various varieties were almost sold out by lunch time. Both have distinct flavours. Must try. Delicioso!

This is a proper paella restaurant. The description isn't clear as it says takeout but it has sit down. Haven't had a Valencia paella in a while and came here

Amazing experience, the guy who served us the food was super kind and welcoming, even though our spanish knowledge is like 0. So tourists who are looking for an english speaking place this is absolutely what you are looking for. Also when we mentioned that we are from Hungary he put on some classic hungarian songs for us. Lovely experience would 100% recommend. Food is also fantastic.

Have been looking for a proper paella and I have found it in this place. We got the Valencia and the Seafood paella. If you want a true paella, this is the place to get it in Madrid!

Thank you for the paella, it was really tasty. Although it was pre-cooked and heated in the microwave, the flavor was outstanding—far surpassing the quality of many freshly made options we’ve tried. Our daughter, who usually struggles to eat even a quarter portion, finished her entire plate, which alone deserves the highest rating. Special thanks to Jordi, who was friendly and helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommended!

One of the best paella’s we’ve had. The staff are nice and the portions were very generous.

Simple concept: different types of paella are cooked ahead of time; you get to choose which you want and that’s heated up in the microwave oven before being served. Makes a lot of sense, and I appreciate this because I’m vegetarian but my partner isn’t. This makes things difficult when we want to have paella, since most places set a minimum order of at least two portions per type. Socarratt lets us both get the paella we want easily. Plus, food was delicious too. Docking one star only because we had to wait for quite some time for our food – through no fault of the service staff, who was basically a one-man show. We noticed that she had to take orders, serve customers, wash the plates and clean the tables on her own – seems like too much for one person? Management might wanna look at hiring more help.

As a solo traveler, it was pretty hard for me to find Paella for 1 person (most of the restaurants serve Paella for 2+ ppl). However, this place perfectly solved this problem, just it was not the best paella I ever had in Spain. There are 4-5 kinds of paella prepared in huge woks. After ordering, the staffs heated up the portion you ordered in microwave. Staffs there were friendly!!
