Santa Monica’s Fast Food Ban Has Consequences For Restaurant Takeout | Eater LA

"A relatively recent food-hall tenant on the Promenade that, while not strictly covered by the city’s fast-food restrictions, largely operates like a fast-food hub where multiple vendors offer quick takeout. Its layout and service model made it suitable for pivoting to curbside, delivery, and grab-and-go service during the pandemic, but it still faces the same decline in foot traffic and uncertainty about long-term revitalization of the Promenade. The venue’s classification outside the ordinance’s core prohibitions has not insulated it from economic strain caused by regional public-health limits on dining." - Mona Holmes

I had the time of my life eating breakfast here. Our waitress was the sweetest human being. I want to be her best friend. I can’t wait to return. The poached eggs on the classic avocado toast were cooked to perfection. The eggwich exceeded my expectations. I received pleasure with every bite. Outstanding atmosphere. The temperature of each drink was unmatched. The smiles that we came across were joyous. Even the parking lot was fantastic.

We stopped here on our way to NYC from Cooperstown, and so glad we did! This place is great for breakfast, brunch, lunch, drinks + apps or even dinner. The ambiance and atmosphere was welcoming, comfortable with indoor and outdoor spacious seating. Very quaint and such attention to detail. I also admired that the food is locally grown, fair-trade, organic, and the most important, savory and fresh meals. We had salmon avocado toast, chai latte, hazelnut ice coffee, Caesar salad, classic avocado toast, and rainbow cookies. All our food was tasty. All the staff were extremely pleasant especially our waitress Kristen A. To the owner, thank you for your vision, creativity and thoughtfulness with Social Eats Cafe. We truly enjoyed it. 😊👍🏼 (I’m sorry I didn’t think to take photos until we left.)

Google
I cannot say enough good things about the food! It was SO fresh and delicious. It is hard to find vegan options, but they hit it out of the ballpark! The vegan options were so good! The Vegan was so fresh and light! 10/10👏🏼

Google
This is my favorite restaurant in Oneonta - they make the best lattes in the city, the food is fresh, and they have specials that change. The Social burger is absolutely amazing. The tiramisu is excellent. I love how you can get the option for a side salad instead of fries. They have a casual but upscale vibe and play jazz music. Overall I love this place and can't recommend highly enough!

Google
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve dined in, but Social Eats is still one of my favorite spots for a good salad. Their homemade balsamic vinaigrette is SO good, and the ingredients are always fresh. The salmon and chicken are a nice protein add on too! I’m also obsessed with their pumpkin soup in the fall—seriously delicious! The paninis are great too. Last time I was there, the drinks were kind of a letdown. They used to serve mimosas in a big wine glass (which felt like a deal), but now it’s a champagne flute for the same price - maybe this has changed since I was last in though. Also, the service can be pretty slow and not super friendly. If the owner’s working, the experience tends to be more positive. Parking can be a bit difficult since it gets busy quick, so I recommend going early. I love the Oneonta mural they added outside and the inside is really cute! It's also great that they offer several outdoor seating options as well and they're dog friendly! Definitely worth a stop if you’ve got some extra time!

Very knowledgeable server for our table. Paleo power bowl was delicious - perfectly poached eggs. Matcha was sweet but not overly sweet. Latte and Eggs Benedict apparently both very enjoyable. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating options. Very loud inside, also outside with traffic noise.

Google
Cute breakfast/brunch spot. Stopped here about 2 weekends ago. Food was great- we ordered one Nutella croissant, egg sandwich & the steak & eggs. The caramel latte was perfect. The only downside was the flies/bees flying inside the restaurant. We chose to sit inside after seeing all the bees flying around their backyard patio tables. When the food is brought up from the kitchen, the staff places the plates under a heat lamp- the flies/bees are just flying around (even in the bakery section) I wanted to get up & just grab our plates. We had to wave our hands around just so the flies would fly away. The bees hung around the indoor plants near our table towards the back but would fly around our tables. My 4 yr old was not happy about that. The table in front of us were trying not to get attack by the bees as well. Overall- Our waitress was nice & attentive, food/drinks were good.

Google
If you’re in the area, Social Eats is an absolute must. Great coffee, food, service and atmosphere. They make you feel like family. Pictured are the cheesy steak Benedict and social tots.

Yelp
Food was delicious for all three of us! Fresher than we've ever tasted. Our server was Lexi and she was extraordinarily personal and professional. She gave suggestions and previous customers comments on our choices. Lexi periodically checked on us as we sat outside in the beautiful day, being Saturday July 19, 2025

Yelp
The food, coffee and service were great, but the heat didn't appear to be working well, so sitting in the glass section in the back of the restaurant would not be recommended. Otherwise, I can highly recommend this place!

Yelp
This was my stop for my 40th birthday with my love. A great lunch destination close to home. We were able to get some amazing coffee to start. The size and the detail matches the amazing flavor. My pumpkin coffee felt festive and celebration. I got eggs, hollandaise, steak edition and the flavor was completely on point. my only request would be additional sauce, but that does not preclude this from being very tasty. Stop at social eats for tremendous food !

Yelp
Welcoming, bright, beautifully decorated, great coffee, but can we talk about this stuffed french toast for a minute?!? Like woah. The bread was fluffy and just perfectly seasoned, blueberries fresh and not syrupy and mascarpone light and delicious. My compliments to the chef ‍

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Have eaten here many times and the food is always delicious! The coffees are also really great! It's very cute inside and there is a nice patio in the back as well as seating in the front. You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance were all amazing! Our servers were so kind and helpful going above and beyond to make our dining with an infant as comfortable as possible. The hollandaise sauce was incredible, very light but with a slight spice that made it oh so yummy. My husband enjoyed the steak Benedict and I had the salmon Benny on a croissant. I will truly dream about how good it was. Our baby had some plain oatmeal with banana. The coffees were incredible as well. We all are full and happy. Such a hidden gem! Thank you!

Yelp
Amazing coffee- high priced but fantastic. I would recommend the cappuccino or latte. The Macchiato is only an espresso shot with milk, the large is a double shot, just a heads up.
google avatar

Tiffany V.

Yelp
This is the cutest little cafe! I stopped in from out of town for coffee and WiFi. The Carmel cappuccino with oat milk was delicious. I was working so I was here for a while. For lunch I had the beet salad. It was so fresh and so tasty. Highly recommend this place! All of the staff were incredible and so friendly. Jen was my waitress and she was incredible! Ambiance was exactly what I needed. Beautiful little cafe. Will likely return before leaving to try more items on the menu.

Yelp
Yum! I met a friend for breakfast yesterday. I had suggested we go here because I'd only been once and I had liked it and wanted to see if it was continuing to live up to its expectation. I would say it has! I had the eggs Benedict which was truly delicious. My coffee was good too. I'm pretty plain and don't go for fancy coffee--but I had a good cup of automatic drip. My only complaint is they don't have Splenda--my preferred sweetener. My friend seemed to enjoy her breakfast burrito but we did have a small complaint about the menu. Unfortunately, the QR code ordering doesn't allow for alterations to the menu--for example if you want a breakfast sandwich but replace the fried egg with scrambled, you cannot do that in the app. That meant we both ordered differently (me through the app and she at the counter). Unfortunately she didn't get her food until after I had started eating mine. That was a bit awkward. It could have been avoided if she could have a made a simple substitution through the app. Other than that--it's the perfect place for a lovely breakfast. The servers are wonderful and the food is great. I highly recommended Social Eats!

Yelp
Insanely good breakfast!!! I had the smoked salmon bene and it was delish! Sit outside if the weather is nice.

Yelp
Really great breakfast spot! My dad *loved* the salmon eggs benedict. There are awesome Vegetarian options & excellent coffee!

Yelp
Great choice of indoor or outdoor seating here! Handicap accessibility is an added benefit! Everything we've ever ordered has been tasty and fresh! This a must go to place in Oneonta!

Yelp
Excellent meal! Great ambience! Great waitstaff! Fantastic vibe! Really a wonderful place!

Yelp
This place is so quaint! It felt elegant, yet rustic. The staff was super friendly and helpful even though it was their busy brunch hour. I ordered a cortado and my friend ordered a chai latte. Both were delicious. I'm a coffee snob and need a super smooth dark roast. It was perfect with lavender and rose syrup. My scrambled egg pesto caprese toast was very tasty. If the bombolini is on the menu, it's a must try! It's a filled donut and was one of the best I've ever had. There was someone playing amazing music the day we visited. I peeked outside and the patio looks amazing for warm weather dining. They even have hammocks. I'll be back!!

Yelp
Loved our waitress. Tofu scramble was good. I ordered a Irish coffee without whipped cream and with oat milk , which it arrived with whipped cream. Sent back and received it without oatmilk. Not a big deal, we just asked again for the oatmilk. My husband ordered a vegetarian omelette which was filled with turkey. The breakfast potatoes were undercooked and I couldnt eat them, but my garbage disposal of a brother did. This place has a lot of potential and Im happy there was at least a tofu scramble, and I liked our waitress but I wouldn't come back.

Yelp
Great food, coffee, and service. Cool outdoor area with games for the kids. Highly recommend if you're in the area!

Yelp
Driving through, happened by, glad we did! Very warm service. Great food. Great. Very nice setting with lots of air and light. Worth getting off the highway for the short drive there.

Yelp
Oh, man. This place did not disappoint! We started off with nice iced coffees. My husband ordered the classic Benny, and I had the havartist panini. First of all, that was no powdered hollandaise sauce...most definitely made from scratch and in house. Wow. I must recreate that panini when I get home - Boar's Head Turkey, havarti cheese, tomato, and pesto - I ate the whole thing, save a piece that I shared with my husband. The ambience is open and breezy, clean and comfortable. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor places to choose from. Definitely a favorite for breakfast or lunch!

Yelp
We were happy to try this restaurant as a healthy alternative to fast food in between CASV games. I had the beet salad with goat cheese and it was tasty, but I noticed the beets were tougher than normal. I ended up crunching on something I thought was dirt or tiny rocks, but that didn't stop me from eating the salad. My son had a burger and fries he liked and my husband had another special burger he liked with blackberry jelly, jalapeños and bacon. He LOVED it!! The service was great and decor was fantastic, funky and modern with a comfy twist. We all enjoyed our visit very much! The only downer was I ended up feeling a sharp spot on a tooth and realized I chipped my tooth; likely from the crunchy things I noticed in the salad. (This is the only reason for the 4/5 stars.) I went to the bathroom and was shocked because I never chipped a tooth on food before. Maybe the kitchen can clean the beets more or make sure they are riper? Genuine comments to help you in the future because your restaurant, staff, food and decor were all delightful.

Yelp
Great! I would reccomend, had a great date night here. Ordered some apps and drinks, service was attentive, food was fresh and prices were reasonable. Would return!

Yelp
A great escape off the highway. Great food quality, service, and love the open concept and outdoor seating options too.

Yelp
There were not a huge amount of restaurant options in Oneonta but this was a pretty cool place. Social eats is a modern space with various types of seating, including indoor and outdoor. On a lovely Autumn day, it was tempting to sit outside, but it was still a little too hot for a Florida girl. You can order at the counter or at the table via QR code. The menu consists of breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, and, coffee! I ordered a beet salad with salmon husband ordered a sandwich. Everything was good. I particularly enjoyed my lattes. I like the system of ordering online. However, it was a little confusing ordering together as a table online. We ordered separately and my husband's food arrived way after mine. Otherwise, very good experience in Oneonta!

Yelp
Excellent! Stopped by as we were in town for a wedding- the outdoor seating was great as was the staff! The food did take about 20-30min but worth the wait. We loved everything! Also the bathrooms were so nice and they had a great variety of items on the menu! We also met the owner and he was very appreciative we stopped by! Would recommend if you're in the area!

Yelp
This place is adorable with lots of outdoor seating and an open plan. As a vegan, I appreciate the vegan menu options. My husband and I ordered The Vegan and The Ultimate Vegan. My husband says that both the sandwiches were delicious regardless if you are plant-based/vegan or not. I had a preference for The Vegan over the the Ultimate Vegan. I would definitely come here again and recommend this restaurant. Oh, and service was wonderful too!

Yelp
One of a kind, trendsetting café. Farm to fork menu that is creative, fresh and local. Service is always with a smile. Ambiance is hip and welcoming. Great space. Even better food.

Yelp
My wife and I arrived at Social eats on 11/24/2024. The place was busy with a birthday party of some sorts. We were greeted by a hostess and sat at Table #1. My wife and I did not receive any type of service for almost 25 minutes. Finally a young guy with curly hair came over and asked in a dull lifeless manner "are you guys ready to order?". My wife ordered the Frenchie and breakfast potatoes. I got two OG bagel sandwiches and an order of tots. My wife's French toast did not come as advertised and was bland. My sandwiches were good but did not come with the tots I ordered because the spaced out child who took our order forgot to put it in. After eating our food, nobody came to provide us our tab. So we had to go up to the front while their new employee awkwardly made eye contact with us and pretended that we didn't exist. Finally we asked them if they could provide the bill. The person proceeds to say that they cannot ring us out because "they're new". I'm fine with new employees learning the ropes but making eye contact and pretending I'm not there is a different story. Finally they cashed us out and the nightmare came to an end. Service was horrible.

Yelp
Omg terrible cold brew. Paid $7 for cold brew that I could have purchased at Hannaford for half the price and tastes leagues better. The only thing I can compare it to is gas station coffee, left out overnight and then chilled. Also got some eggs Benedict which were good, but tiny portion for the cost. The ambiance was good but they too hard. We are in Oneonta, not Florence. Service was standard, nothing exceptional or worth noting, but not worth tipping for someone to bring my food 10ft without a smile, just a "here you go." 1 star for the bad coffee, small portions and overpricing.
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Excellent food, whether off their regular menu or specials. Also have an extensive drink & coffee bar menu. They are open year round which is a plus. Very nicely decorated, have both indoor and outdoor seating during the warmer months. Brunch on the weekends which is excellent. Only potential downside is having to order via a QR code which makes splitting checks very easy but also you don't see wait staff very often. Definitely would recommend coming here!

Yelp
Well, I am disappointed in Social Eats right now, and I hope my experience today was an aberration. A slice of avocado toast and an "ultimate vegan breakfast sandwich" took over an hour to assemble and the sandwich was way overpriced for what I received. They didn't have croissants so I had it on a slice of wheat bread, and it came with the faintest whisper of avocado, a slender slice of tofu, and a vegan sausage patty on each half. Half the lettuce in the side salad was dark and slimy. This came as a shock after a couple of great experiences there. By the time the food arrived, the large coffees we had were long gone and it would have taken too long to get fresh ones. I have to give the staff credit - they were so polite and cheerful, even though they had to carry every last one of those oversized trays up and down a flight of stairs. I'd had no idea the kitchen was in the basement. The trays the servers carry are enormous, so I know they can't see their own feet or the stairs they are traversing. I hope the owner installs a couple of dumbwaiters because this seems like, at best, an exhausting set-up, and at worst a potential for disaster. The girls repeatedly had to set down the trays on the counter when they came up to rest their arms and catch their breath before they delivered the food to the tables. I would say the place is still worth a try, I just really hope they didn't start with a bang only to start cutting corners that whittle away at the customer's experience.

Yelp
the environment is very nice. good food for breakfast, breakfast sammy's all the way. chai latte was one the best i've had in long time.
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely and refreshing! Born and raise in NYC reminds me of a restaurant in Brooklyn but better since we're surrounded by mountains! Even better they have vegan options, gluten free options and games outside. Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, great coffee and food. Really nice addition I've been waiting for in Oneonta. My new breakfast place for sure!
google avatar

Marie Mauritz K.

Yelp
Cute place that's easy to get to. The bakery assortment on entering is impressive. Our group of 6 was seated and provided menus. We ordered breakfast burrito, bagel sandwiches, avocado toast and lox and bagels. It took forever to get our food. I would guess 30 minutes! And, the burrito had a hair in it. They offered to make another but we were ready to leave. One coffee, one chocolate milk snd 2 San pelligrino set us back over $113. Not worth it.

Luis M P.

Yelp
The food and ambience of this place is great. Since we move to Oneonta is a regular visited restaurant for us. Customer service is amazing. Fun Fact my wife says their Chai Latte is the best she's ever had. Great experience overall.

ann M.

Yelp
The service is pretty poor, especially when there wasn't a lot of customers surrounding us and we were asking for items to be bought to our table ahead of time since we know that the wait time for the food is pretty long and then have everything brought out at the same time. Several times I have ordered and my food was cold or not to my specifications. I do like where it's located pretty convenient in Oneonta around several shops so that definitely was a perk, but there were also several other places around there that have better service and food.

Yelp
We ordered 2 roast beef & Gruyère panini sandwiches with a side of fries. Our kid had some French toast. The panini sandwiches were dry and relatively flavorless. They pressed them with arugula already in the bread so it was all wilted. You couldn't even tell it was in the sandwich texture wise. (Tip.. Press the sandwich then open it up and add arugula for a much better end user experience) The Gruyère was bland, and wasn't even melted through on my sandwich. The sides of fries were beyond skimpy, and the meat and bread were nothing to write home about. A $15.95 panini better have some great bread on it.. This one did not. French toast was 2 pieces of bread halved, diagonal. Small handful of berries, couple squirts from a whipped topping can. Side of syrup. 2 pieces of bread and part of an egg, maybe 10 blueberries. Canned whip topping. Nothing else on the plate. $14.95 This was a $45 lunch (at best) that we paid $63 for. $75 after tip... I've had waay better meals for much less money. I don't mind paying a lot for good food but this was just silly. After seeing the reviews on here and seeing the classy little cafe we had high expectations but left feeling disappointed. The food just wasn't worth the money. Service was good, but kitchen was slooow and there was only 1 other table seated when we were in here so I can't begin to imagine what it's like with a full house. Looking at other negative reviews it seems like it's a thing. Not sure who needs to hear this but the iced tea is absolutely awful. Whoever chose that for the restaurants standard iced tea gave a prime example of putting attention in the wrong spot. Get the sandwich right, let the tea be tea. I didn't order herbal tea and that tea made my Arnold Palmer taste terrible. My wife ordered a plain iced tea and couldn't even finish it. When you order iced tea, as a tea drinker there is an expectation that it's going to be iced tea. Good quality fresh brewed black tea is appreciated but having something with a completely different flavor or herbal tea you are passing as tea without telling the diner it's got other stuff in it when they order it is off putting. Bottom line on this place SKIP IT. There are way better options for the money at least for lunch.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing food and service! always my go to for brunch, lunch and coffee! Their coffee is vibrant and freshly crafted and their brunch selection is perfect! For lunch the chicken cutlet sandwich is a must! The outdoor patios are the finishing touch.

Yelp
AMAZING food! If you are a foodie, this is a must go to! Absolutely fresh , delicious and served with a smile. Order via QR code or with a staff member!! Where do we start... the social burger was seasoned and cooked to PERFECTION! This is in my top 3 burgers of my lifetime....and I am old. The fries are battered and came with the delicious burger and also flavored/seasoned perfectly. The bacon was thick. All I can say is go to this place , don't pass go..!

Yelp
Social eats made our baby Sprinkle awesome! We were a large group and they accommodated us wonderfully. Food was great and service was awesome!! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Excellent food! Nice atmosphere with outdoor seating. This can be a busy restaurant because of the good food. Don't fret if you have to wait, the food is worth the wait! Yum!

Yelp
Stopped here for a Brunch on our Bachelorette weekend and right off the bat our server Jordan was amazing she was so welcoming and had the best energy! The food was absolutely delicious we recommend the pancakes, the steak salad and the fries with the hollandaise sauce ! TO DIE FOR ! The entire restaurant was just so cute and such a great spot to bring friends very inclusive of pets and kids and we will be coming back 10/10 recommend.

PR P.

Yelp
We arrived at 10:30 am on Sunday without reservations. We were told that the wait was approximately 30 minutes. At 45 minutes we were seated and told that a server would be by " when she's available." It was alumni weekend. After waiting ten minutes at the table with no server in sight we left.

Yelp
Best Smoked Salmon Benny I have ever had! Great restaurant with a fresh food menu, beautiful atmosphere indoors and out with a with amazing staff. Oneonta's finest. I'll be back for sure.

J. M.

Yelp
Food and service was amazing! Cute little spot with patio seating. The chai latte was the best I've ever had!

Maria J.

Yelp
One girl gave us menus ,seated us at a table and forgot forgot to come back. We had to go back up to the counter where they were standing around talking to have them take our order. Well the food was fine except the salad that cost around $15 consisted of nothing but arugula, a couple of beets scant amount of cheese and a couple of nuts. They forgot the dressing and had to bring it out separately. iced coffee was nothing but watered down regular coffee ..Pricey for the amount of food you get. Chairs are flimsy. Parking lot spaces are jammed.

Yelp
As a Criminal Defense Attorney, I need to be where I need to be. This time it was a shotgun wedding in Unadilla New York where my nephew Ryan's past, and his vivacious bride, Taylor , finally caught up with him. The wedding was cold, rainy, and wonderful, but that weekend we were looking for good food, good cocktails, and great service. We found it at Social Eats where owner Michelle and her staff had us coming back several times. Breakfast, burgers, veggies, pastries. All great. AND a bar to boot. Highly recommended. JoeS.

Yelp
I was so excited for this place to open and it was worth the wait! It did not disappoint! The space itself is beautiful with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I got an iced coffee, a bacon scone, and a BLT. Everything was so fresh and delicious! The service was excellent as well. This is such a great addition to our community and I cannot wait to go back!

Tammy T.

Yelp
Food was good but it took a long time (which may be the norm for the town). Loaded burrito, lox plate and home fries (extra crispy) were our favorites. The Cheesy Steak Benny was a little disappointing - it was a bit dry and not flavorful. We didn't have enough time for dessert, but the dessert case looked good, especially the cannoli and chocolate flourless torte.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast/lunch in a Monday since it's one of the only places open in town. The ambiance was really great and the staff were helpful and friendly. We had kids and adults and there was something for everyone on the menu. The fries are excellent, highly recommend! The pancakes are very filling and the baked goods looked delicious but we didn't sample them! It was a little bit of a wait for the food but well worth it. We'll go back when we are in town again.

Yelp
Great food, beautiful atmosphere - Michelle, Summer (puppies!) and the rest of the team were so fun and kind ... we went 2 days in a row. Do not go to Cooperstown with stopping by for a fantastic meal!
