Where to Get the Best Fall Lattes in Philly | Eater Philly

"South Street’s Social House Eatery and Cafe is a welcoming neighborhood spot offering amazing coffee, cold drinks, and weekend breakfast. With lattes inspired by current events and Philadelphia happenings, there is always something new to come in and sip on. If you’re a fan of Philly sports, its seasonal green and white mocha latte (aptly named the go birds latte) is a nod to the Philadelphia Eagles and can be ordered all season long." - George Banks-Weston

Edit: I came back with my partner just to get drinks for our morning walk. I got a cold brew which was reasonably priced and tasted fine, somewhere around $4, and my partner got a matcha that was awful - needed less syrup, more matcha, more ice. It tasted like a marshmallow- not in a good way. Overall it was a bad experience and we won’t be going back. Original: I only got a bagel sandwich here (sausage egg and cheese) and it was only okay. In all fairness, I usually get them on blueberry or everything bagels and they had run out of those and only had plain (I can just before close). Eating a bagel sandwich with a plane bagel is probably the best way to judge one for flavor but I’ve only done it like twice. What I found here is little to no balance in the ingredients: The cheese was all texture and no taste, it added nothing to the sandwich (a good sharp tasting cheddar would have gone a long way). The eggs were bland enough that I forgot they were there. The sausage was alright, maybe a bit too peppery but I bet it would have been much better if it wasn’t the only source of flavor. And I don’t think I can complain about the plain bagel, had good texture. I might come back to try the bacon on an everything or blueberry if they have it, but I might pass. Not sure!

Such a calm vibe 😴 visited at 10 on a weekday morning and got a bagel and latte. Service was fast and friendly. I had a few questions for the barista who was able to answer with confidence. I was surprised at how low the cost was! The toasted marshmallow latte was everything I wanted 🥰 it’s also very clean inside, and in a central location to access many useful businesses on South Street. I’ll definitely be back!

We walked here as a suggestion from our hotel and we were not disappointed. It did take time to wait in line and then to get our order but it was well worth it. We just ordered the everything bagel breakfast sandwich with egg, sausage and cheese, and it was so good and very filling. We only wanted something quick to get our day started and this place turned out to be a good choice.

Had a vanilla latte 20 oz and a croissant sandwhich (turkey, provolone, egg). Super chill and relaxing atmosphere, and the latter was delicious, smooth, and tasty. Didn't taste like burnt beans at all! The sandwich was great, too. It was filling and the size to expect it to be. It was a little bland, and in hindaight, maybe I should have added a little salt to it. Or maybe the pesto sandwich would have a much stronger kick to it, Ill try it next time I go back.

I was thinking this would be a great new spot for my morning coffee and breakfast sandwich but I was disappointed. The cashier/barista didn’t say a word to me. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant and it was burnt and very dry. They were all out of cold brew coffee so I got an iced coffee but it tasted pretty bland for an iced coffee. The interior design of the place is very cool, but the food, coffee, and customer service was disappointing.

Wow just went there today for 1st time and before even tasting the food I felt welcomed. The place is so cozy and owners or workers just greeted everyone coming in as an old friend just finding their way back home. The food was delicious and freshly cooked. I noticed the treats while waiting and asked if dogs were allowed, and she said, definitely. I was in uniform working in the area, so I wasn't able to enjoy the relaxed lounge atmosphere, but definitely looking forward to bringing my furbaby out for breakfast very soon.

Please consider changing your hours to when you know you will be open!! I've come here 4+ times during the posted hours to find that it was still closed. Really love it here but need dependable hours.

Chai tea latte is so creamy and not too sweet! Nice couch and chairs

Yelp
I love this place for a quick bite to eat in the morning. They're open early, and my kids love to run around and jump on the couches while my wife and I pretend we don't know them. Staff is very nice and though they don't have a ton of food options, especially for a gluten intolerant person, I'm not complaining. I'd love to try this place out sans kids, since the ambiance is so chill. Grab yourself a book and hang out here, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
This coffee shops is one of my favorites of all time! The owner / barista is always so welcoming, friendly, and makes the drinks very strong. You definitely will not have a watered down drink here. I truly believe this is some of the best matcha in philly. The windows are huge, allowing the most beautiful sunlight to come in. i enjoy studying here or catching up with friends. Lastly, the prices are amazing for coffee in grad hospital / near rittenhouse.

Yelp
No coffeehouse in Philly has calmed me as much as this place. Their music selection is excellent - so soothing and relaxing. The only time I picked up my phone was to take pictures. Lots of comfortable seating and really good reads. I got their hot Mocha and I am not sure if it is different than their Mochachino but I loved it! The only thing that has a room for improvement is actual coffee mugs instead of to-go cups.

Yelp
Just an update to let everyone know Social House has the best Chai Latte in the neighborhood... potentially in all of Philadelphia. Their staff is still incredibly friendly and kind, their service is top notch with serious COVID protocols being followed, and they have dog treats! What is not to love?!

Yelp
I was excited to try this place but did not have a great experience. The cashier didn't greet us upon entering and was rude as she was taking our order. I thought I'd leave a cash tip depending on how the experience and food turned out but noticed that the cashier reviewed my credit card receipt and when she saw I hadn't charged a tip on my card, she slammed her tip jar on the counter in front of me and then slammed a drawer behind the counter. I immediately decided this treatment was not worth my cash tip. I didn't pay any mind to this behavior as I still depended on her and staff for my food and didn't want to risk it. I thought to myself, I'm sorry but if this is how you do business, you don't deserve my tip or my business. Never going there again.

Yelp
2.5 stars When this place was La Va it had more seating and it was more comfy. More cushioned and wing backed chairs. Also had better food and lunch options. Used to come here a lot with my iPad, paperwork and a book and spend hours. This falls under "if ifs not broke don't fix it"

Yelp
We came here recently since we were walking by and I would not return here. It felt like a small shop that served coffee, rather than a true coffeeshop. I think I would rather walk a block to Starbucks or like four blocks to Rival Bros Coffeeshop. The coffee tasted burnt and the cup scalded my hand despite the sleeve around the coffee. We also tried the chai latte which was great, but it was in powder form, so I'm not really sure how to feel about it.

Yelp
Kinda cute inside, but it's sealed off due to covid. They put some wooden picnic tables outside and have a good pick up/ordering system going, and it's a cute place on the corner to gather. Dog friendly. and there is sometimes a selection of sweet breads/pound cakes. Unfortunately, the coffee has always been a little weak and sometimes I'd add an extra shot for flavor only. But that, combined with alternative milks (and theirs comes... sweetened??) I'm paying like $8 for a medium iced beverage that still tastes off. My very last $8 drink, I ended up throwing out and buying a new cup elsewhere. It was barely coffee or milk. It tasted like when I lazily refill my coffee cup with water without rinsing out the last sip or two. A couple of times, there was no one there and I was greeted by a little written brb note that was still there when I walked by after going to another cafe. Some days they don't have bagels and/or croissants for sandwiches that recently returned to the menu. Those do take a long time to come out, but they taste pretty good. After being forced to go to other cafes, I just kept going to other shops. Would still come and grab a bag of coffee or meet up with a friend out of convenience, but I do wish they can improve their drink quality.

Yelp
Can't believe I've overlooked this place for years! Might become my new favorite coffee shop study spot - drinks are good, music is calming, and decent amount of tables or couches which makes it great to park yourself for a bit or to gather with friends!

Yelp
Came here today to meet up and talk Facebook group admin nonsense with another woman. I have walked by numerous times and never stopped in and it was kind of in between us so that worked out. When I arrived at 10am on a rainy-ish Saturday, the place wasn't crowded but had a few evenly spaced singles/small groups. It was pretty quiet. I ordered a soy chai (my go-to) and sat at a table in the back. Chai: I'm surprised now reading reviews that this is the best in the city/neighborhood because I felt it was really bland? I didn't get good spicy hits. Maybe they're not used to making it with soy milk. I regretted not asking for pumpkin flavor as I usually do in the fall since that might have added more spice to it. I've had better! When my fellow Facebook admin arrived she ordered a beverage and a slice of carrot cake and she let me try a bite since I said me and my husband are addicted to trying different carrot cakes. Carrot cake slice was yummy! Frosting wasn't too sweet, the cake was nice and dense, and there were nuts I believe though my bite didn't include any. I'd come back and try another beverage and get a slice of that carrot cake again for sure. We stayed for nearly 3.5 hours! I hadn't planned to but it just happened that way. Throughout our time there, there were a few waves of business with the line wrapped around the front cases and it got a little noisy during those times. Then it would quiet down for a bit after the rush. I liked the hanging lights in the (gender neutral) bathroom! Really creative. No code necessary to use the restroom. Overall, I liked the vibe but chai might not be my go-to drink here. I'd come back though for sure!

Yelp
Love this place when they're open. They are never open during the posted hours. But when it is, the service and food are wonderful. Tracy is a sweetheart and makes a great vanilla chai latte. The atmosphere reminds me of the coffee shop on Friends. Very living roomie vibe

Yelp
Would highly recommend getting social at this coffee shop! It's a cute little spot and is top notch. I would recommend the charcoal latte (not in a FAD diet kinda way, but it's a nice coconut-y latte and I get mine with oat milk). Their matcha is also really good as well as their espresso (so any sorta latte would be fab). They are a moderate price since it's a local spot, but do expect to drop at least $5+ here. Their pastries are decent as well (loved the Black&White cookie). They have some outdoor seating so no need to bring your coffee back to the house. The inside looks really well decorated (when we can go back lol) too. Menu is posted on the front door and service is great. Can't rec this place enough!

Yelp
This is my neighborhood coffee shop and I am so glad it is open again post COVID. They have a menu of really great, affordable breakfast sandwiches and drinks made with La Colombe. Most of all, it's a welcoming place and you can come over and get some work done. Local and LGBTQ friendly. ‍‍ This is my deconstructed pesto omelette/croissant sandwich.

Deborah D.

Yelp
Unreliable hours make this place the worst. You think you'll be able to get a decent cup of La Colombe coffee on any given morning, but it's often just randomly closed. When this location was the La Va cafe the food, coffee, service and ambiance were great. Now it really stinks. The coffee is still decent La Colombe coffee but the food is terrible (grocery store frozen bagels with a slab of egg and cheese is the best you'll get) and the unreliable hours make it a "must miss." I wish someone else would take it over and bring it back to life.

Yelp
Been coming here since it was La Va, and my wife has been coming here since it first opened as La Va. Needless to say Graduate Hospital has changed since then, and changed a lot. The local population first got younger with more students, then older, more established and professional. the neighborhood changed. In came Starbucks and Wawa, out went Sowe and The Strip Joint. La Va plodded along, getting slightly more tatty and slightly more dated each year. When Rory took over and renamed/rebranded to Social House we held our breath. Would it be the same, would it be different in a good or bad way? Would we end up walking down to (gulp) Starbucks? On the good side, gone are the dated laminated menus, replaced by clean blackboard, simplified menus. Gone the old, broken, stained sofas. Gone the misfit broken chairs. Gone the 1990's glass table tops. Gone the psycho bird art painted on an old repurposed door. With a bright lick of paint and new chairs and table tops, a new sofa and cleaned up decor Social House is now a brighter, more welcoming place. The menu is cleaner and simpler yet retains all the favorites like Burekas, the La Va Panini and my weekend go to bacon egg and cheese. The excellent La Colombe coffee has stayed, as has the gym membership discount. The pastries/deserts game has definitely improved, and displayed in cleaner, more`organized cabinets. There are some pricier items but, lets be honest, graduate hospital can afford it. It also feels cleaner. The staff seem happier, and change less often than the La Va days, many are still heavily tattooed and have a little South Philly Sass. The clientele is a little different, you see more moms with kids and fewer hipsters clogging up the place (and stringing power cords across the aisles because they need to charge every device in their bag over the 3 hours they spend drinking their one small drip coffee). Overall, Social House is an excellent and much needed revamp of a neighborhood favorite, an update that keeps pace with the neighborhood itself. From slightly run down and infested with hipsters to brighter, fresher, cleaner, more comfortable and family friendly, much like its surroundings. Is it for everyone, no. Some prefer the predictability and sameness of Starbucks or Wawa. Some wish Graduate Hospital had not changed and for those folks there is always Point Breeze. Some miss the days of sitting all day with one coffee at a table for 4 charging their phone, laptop and iPad and for those folks there is a shower, a job and growing up. Or just some deodorant, at least some deodorant. That's not to say those folks are not welcome, at Social House everyone is welcome and greeted with a smile. They just may be less comfortable than they were in a slightly broken, slightly soiled, slightly neglected La Va sitting on a broken, coffee (I hope it was coffee) stained sofa from 1972. But for the younger, smarter, livelier, fitter, well educated, cosmopolitan, diverse and let's be honest attractive people who live in the melting pot that is GH? This is a place that now reflects them, and is a great place to meet friends for breakfast, coffee, a light lunch or an afternoon treat. PS They also do catering and recently set up breakfast for a series of corporate meetings, putting on a fantastic spread at an insanely reasonable price.

Yelp
I really like this place and the concept. The owner is exceptionally cheerful and cares about his customers. The old owner lived far away and was never around. The new owner is present much of the time. I am writing this review to give the new owner helpful feedback. I want this place to succeed and it would be great to have a good coffee/restaurant shop in the neighborhood. 1. I have to admit that i first didn't like the new interior. I felt swept back into the 90's coffee house scene - it didn't help thatTalking Heads and The Cure were playing overhead. But now, I find it oddly comforting and enjoy it. 2. Ok here's the deal. I like the owner. I like the location. I want to go here, but the food is mediocre and I often just can't bring myself to go. Higher quality ingredients are necessary and maybe order from a new bakery. Everything from the salad (why does it taste so bad?)to the bread and toast is pretty mediocre and it's hard to stomach. I would rather pay a little more for better food. Take private poll/survey. Ask people what they think and whether they would pay more for better food. I wish you lots of success & keep playing talking heads. :)

Yelp
This coffee café is cute and homey. Their chai lattes are good, and from what my friend says, so is the coffee. However, their food is, unfortunately, not. I ordered one of their breakfast sandwiches, and the eggs were burnt, spinach was wet and undercooked, and my everything bagel wasn't everything I hoped for. I thought it was just my sandwich, but my friend's sandwich had the same burnt look and taste. As a Jersey gal who knows what a real bagel sandwich looks and tastes like, this was a major disappointment. I would go for the cute ambience and probably the coffee, but do yourself a favor, and don't order the food. It's not worth your money.

Yelp
This is a pretty local coffee shop for me, and despite it changing ownership, I don't think its quiet changed all that much. Granted, the interior is more suave, hip, and more inviting, but the drinks that I have gotten the last couple of times have been a little lack luster. I got a latte recently that was more foamed milk with maybe a hint of espresso (which I know what a latte is, but it was extra foamy). I really think that Social House has a niche in the neighborhood, and I would absolutely be a regular if their drinks stepped up a notch. It's otherwise a great place to get some work done with a decent amount of seating, free wifi, and some outlets.

Yelp
Love this place -- delicious coffee and lovely spread of food options! My go to spot to get work done over a fresh cup of joe when visiting Philly.

Yelp
I hadn't been to this place since it was the old "La Va" so decided to give Social House a try. I read about them online first and love their concept of an open community and all welcome. I got a couple of coffees and a 3 breakfast items to go for some of us to share. The service was good and it wasn't too crowded at 7:30am on a Tuesday morning. The coffees were good and reasonably priced. I got the yogurt, granola and fresh fruit / the blake sandwich / bagel with cream cheese. It was all decent but not quite as good as the price would indicate. I would go back and give them another try and dine in this time, but I'm not rushing back as there are so many other great places in the area for coffee/breakfast.

Lila L.

Yelp
This place rocks. Try the mushroom bureka. But save one for me. Coffee is good, ambience is exactly what you want from a chill cafe. Good work place too.

Yelp
Used to be my preferred study spot but I went on friday and there was a rude girl working there who didn't seem to understand she worked in the service industry, I wish I could have taken my tip back

Yelp
Great coffee, cozy place! The place looks so much better after the relaunch. Try the homemade cookies!

Yelp
Agree with the reviewer below who wants them to succeed and offered suggestions. There is great potential for more business, especially considering the location across from the very busy Honey's, which had no seats at lunchtime so I walked across the street to Social House. I walked in and realized it was not really a lunch place but more of a coffee shop. But was super hungry so decided to try it. The baked goods look great but did not try them. The menu is otherwise meh. I don't love hummus on a sandwich, and there is apparently no option for regular sandwich toppings. The side salad plus pickles is not tasty at all. The sandwich was just OK. That plus a soda came to $12.50; I was sad I'd spent that much when I could have had a hoagie nearby. Plus...it took AGES for the food to come out. It looks like they don't have a real kitchen and just use panini presses etc. I suggest trimming the menu to what you can handle, or bring in tasty savory food from elsewhere.

Issac M.

Yelp
The WiFi didn't work and the barista was unconcerned about the customers. This place was much better when it was La Va.
