Famous Pizza Serves Its Final Slice Today in Denver | Eater Denver

"A neighboring restaurant in the same building shut its doors in July, part of a pattern of longtime tenants leaving the block after the property changed ownership." - Gigi Sukin

My service dog and I came here to celebrate. Service animals are ok when it's not busy. Grace was my server and she was incredibly kind and courteous, listened carefully and answered all my questions. I came for dinner but it looks like I'm spending a lot more time here to try the whole menu. Got the steak picado and it was the classiest fajitas ever. I dressed it up like with Guac, Sour Cream, and Pico. They did a kids ground beef cup for my service dog too and we really appreciated it. The sweet tea was literally the most perfect cup of sweet tea with the cleanest water. There was ample parking for my Class 5 Snapon Truck and they are close enough and prices fairly so there is no reason to eat fast food in Rio Arriba county. They should close all the junk food places with high quality amazing food like this down the road.

The food was only ok. Took a surprisingly long time to get two tamales and a taco salad; the taco salad didn’t have taco seasoning until he meat and was pretty bland in taste. The service was good and the atmosphere was friendly. My husband likened it to cafeteria food.

Google
Very delicious! The Socorro New Mexican Pizza was outstanding and we really enjoyed the Fire flavored wings. The medium pizza was a good size pizza at 14”. Two mediums and two orders of wings left our family of two parents and 4 children with leftovers! Highly recommended!

We were able to stop and eat around 2pm on a Saturday. The service was so friendly! My lady ate here twice in row two days a few weeks ago and had this same burger meal which she really talked up! However she said it was much better last time. The meat lacked seasoning however the fries and garnish were super fresh! We were also grateful that we were able to take our dog into the patio area.

So I ordered dinner from here tonight and I’ve done this in the past it usually is good and I would give this place a 75 outta 100, but after talking to the owner tonight, I felt compelled to have to write this review. I know this woman personally and she’s not a very nice person altogether but tonight she just showed her true colors of how rude she can really be. You may have something in talent, but you lack for in human capacity, the food yes, the food is very good here most of the time. I’ve never seem to have a complaint about it except when they don’t get your order, right I ordered a taco salad tonight. Taco salad would indicate that it would come with meat. My fault was that I never saw online where it said choose chicken or beef so I didn’t choose either because I forgot wow they’ve done this in the past when they wanted to correct a wrong. They’ve always managed to call me. In fact I was so mad one time that they got my whole order mixed up, but I never took their offer of trying to replace the order by my going back the following night to get dinner again I said no that was OK. I would just let it go well this time I’m not gonna let it go. She didn’t offer to give me even 10% off the salad for not having beef or chicken on it, she gave me no resolution except to yell at me for being another complaining customer. I also mentioned the fact to her that the guacamole on my salad was black it was and I have a picture to show it anyway the salad cost me 10.99, same Price as it would have it if it had meat, but it didn’t. She didn’t even offer to discount it nothing she just wanted to continue telling me that I was a bad customer complaining about the fact that they didn’t even try to rectify the situation and that she hated customers complaining about her guacamole always being black well not saying it wasn’t fresh. I just said it was black and it was and that’s not very appetizing so if people are complaining about that, find a solution to improve it anyway I won’t be going back here simply because I’m a neighbor. She might be wonderful singer but a bad businesswoman. She has a high turnover in staff that says something. They are young and polite, but don't stay long. Thank you very much but I won’t ever go back, so sorry Socorro you lost a customer for life, and will continue to tell people about how you conduct business! Food is good but business tactics lack professionalism!

Had wanted to try Socorro's for a while. Happy I did! The sopa cheeseburger was yummy, the patty was quite small but nice flavor. The combination plate was the best had in some time. Service was efficient and kind. Note: for whatever reason they only use plastic flatware. Definitely give Socorro's a try, you'll leave full and happy.

Google
Awesome and fun:)! Socorro recommended The stufffed sopapilla with carne adobada - Christmas - meaning red and green chilies . Was delicious. Moreso loved the vibe, place was pack full of very friendly locals. I have been to 100s of Michelin restaurants but also love authentic hole in the walls! This is now on my top list

Google
The place is modest in decor and feel which is enduring to me because the food is the primary star of this place. A feel good and welcoming place that delivers great food at really great prices. After spending a Sunday at the feast day celebration in Jicarilla Apache Nation, we had arrived late in Hernandez, NM, needing to stop for gas. My friend suggested we dine at Socorro's Restaurant, having researched open eateries on Google Maps. Upon arrival, we were delighted to find the place bustling with cars bearing New Mexico license plates, a promising sign of a great dining experience. Perusing the menu, we discovered the fascinating story of Socorro's Restaurant, owned by Socorro Herrera, who transitioned from singer to restaurant owner. With endearing self-deprecation, she acknowledged her initial lack of culinary knowledge and the skepticism of locals regarding her cooking abilities. I found her story and attitude captivating and was eager to sample her cuisine. My expectations were soon surpassed. Both of us were famished, so we opted for combination plates, hers with red chile and mine with the spicier green chile. Our table was graced with ginormous plates of aromatic and flavorful goodness, accompanied by separate servings of sopapillas, a taco, and distinct salsas. While the combination dishes were excellent, the highlight for me was the beans. They were evidently fresh and cooked to a rich crémeux textured perfection, reminiscent of ambrosia. My dining companion and I agreed that the beans were truly exceptional. Having family members who owned Spanish restaurants and being familiar with Northern New Mexican cuisine, I judge establishments based on three key factors: beans, Spanish rice, and sopapillas or tortillas. Chile is an entirely distinct category, influenced by my upbringing on a chile farm in my youth. Based on these criteria, I would rate Socorro's Restaurant as follows: the beans were outstanding, the green chile was flavorful and excellent, the Spanish rice was delightful, and the sopapillas (a generous four of them!) were also exceptional. I rank this restaurant among the best in the area, and the prices are reasonable considering the quantity and quality of food received. The use of disposable paper drink cups and cutlery is practical given their commitment to providing quality food at affordable prices. As stated in the beginning of my review the decor is modest and unpretentious, but this is inconsequential as the food takes center stage. Socorro's Restaurant is a welcoming and convivial space that consistently delivers exceptional cuisine at remarkable prices.

Yelp
One of the most authentic New Mexico Mexican food restaurants you could visit. A personal visit to the table from Socorro Herrera was a special treat. Amazing lady with 30 years of providing excellent food and jobs in the area. Chicken green chile sopapilla was just excellent. Friendly, helpful staff.

Cory S.

Yelp
Food was amazing! I had the tamale plate with the Christmas. Very very good! Everyone was very friendly with great service. Would definitely eat here again if passing through.

Yelp
Best of the best New Mexico food. True blue NM food. Must stop every time I'm in town.

Ian C.

Yelp
What a delightful place! A mix of Old and New, very traditional New Mexican type ambience but also they have a self-service kiosk and in addition to traditional physical menus, they have QR codes that link to an online menu at each table. The food is absolutely wonderful, I had my first sopapilla and my beltline will never be the same.
google avatar

Ursula S.

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing staff. I've never had a bad meal. I love the tacos, but also the steak, and the chips and salsa. The sopapillas are made with yeast and are spectacular. I ate two on the way home to Taos and arrived, dripping with honey, but absolutely content. I only wish we lived in Hernández.... Love you Ms. Socorro and your beautiful food!!!
google avatar

Roger P.

Yelp
It's 5 in the morning and there's nowhere to eat in Española, but you can take the extra time to drive a few minutes out to Hernandez and get a delicious breakfast burrito and a drink for $10 at Socorro's. Well worth it! Especially if you're on graveyard shift and need that after work meal.
google avatar

Marco P.

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere and cool decor at Socorro's. I ordered the combo plate and it came with plenty to eat. Service was on point and the ladies are nice and attentive. I'm giving it two up and shall return when I'm in the area again. I'm glad they're around for business.

John N.

Yelp
Amazing food and staff! Great breakfast, lunch!!! Authentic Mexican food, Great Green & Red Chilie. A must stop every time I'm even close to the area.

Yelp
I've heard about #socorrosrestaurant in Hernandez, NM several times on Facebook. Taking the road of loops and turns through the Native American reservation, we turned back on straightforward road, and came upon a relatively small building with many cars parked outside... The dining room was relatively large, and had space, but we chose to sit on the patio for more privacy. Socorro's is a family business. The menu has something for everyone... (Mexican, and breakfast are what they're known for, but they also have items such as chicken fried steak or burgers (which are said to be delicious!). Mark and I both ended up getting Fajitas (it's a staple for me to get Fajitas) and of the millions I've tasted since I've been married, last night's were hands down the best... surprisingly, for what they added (potatoes) and what they left out... it was seasoned very plainly, letting the ingredients shine in their own right, as opposed to being accompanied with a sauce. The tortilla was fresh and deliciously warm, and I didn't even miss the cheese! A "detour off the highway," this place is definitely worth coming to, and the prices are also very reasonable for what you're getting both in quantity and quality.... We didn't have leftovers... no pun intended but I'm calling this one a slam dunk! (5 out of 5) #gourmetrecovery

Yelp
I researched this place before a recent vacation in New Mexico. Based on the ir reviews and menu, we went out of our way to have lunch at Socorro's. It was very busy and had two waitresses and one cook working. They also had to take care of answering phones, take-out orders, and cashing customers out. Like most places these days, they seemed understaffed and overwhelmed. I ordered their combo plate and requested chicken. My wife ordered a taco plate with chicken. She got what she ordered and said it was good. I instead got what I think was beef, not the chicken that I had requested. I told the waitress and she acted confused. I said I would just go ahead and accept it as I did not want to wait longer to get it replaced. Then I started eating it and the beef was so overcooked and dry I could not even stick a fork in it. I could not chew it. It was like beef jerky. She came by again to ask how everything was and I told her how bad it was. She looked confused how to respond. She finally asked if she should say something to him? (I assume the cook?) I said she should say something to someone and not serve anyone else this batch of beef. She never offered to do anything for me and I did not see her go talk to anyone about it. I basically could not eat my lunch. I moved all the uneditable beef to the side and ate what I could. She came back and had to notice that I did not eat most of my meal and did nothing but bring me my check. I was charged $2 more than the price on the menu. But my wife was changed $2 less so it netted out the same so I figured it was not worth mentioning. When I said I wanted to pay with a credit card she said I had to follow her to the back office to use the card reader. I followed her back and surprising to me the owner was back there looking at her computer screen doing something. I thought hmm, what is she doing back here when up front they were swamped. She should have been up front helping her staff and checking on customers. And why didn't our waitress get her involved with my issues? I assumed at first she just did not know what to do and had no one there to help her. But the owner was there so was she afraid to mention that she messed up or the cook messed up my order? Or afraid to get the cook in trouble? Who knows. I blame the owner for not training staff or not empowering her staff to take care of problems. I was very disappointed with my experience, especially since I drove about 20 minutes out of my way to eat there. I hope mine was not the norm. But the owner needs to do better training and get more involved in her business.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place since there aren't many mom and pop restaurants in the Espanola area anymore but left disappointed. I ordered the combination plate with two rolled cheese enchiladas and a pork tamale smothered in red chile, and a hard shell chicken taco. Chile had a bite to it but was bland. Taco was more mini sized but tasty. Mom ordered a carne asada burrito and she also stated that the chile was bland. BFF ordered the tamale plate and also stated that the chile did not have much flavor to it. Initially service was not good as the one waitress was rude as we were waiting to be seated and apparently she had already told us to seat ourselves (did not get her name). We also had no utensils and had to ask her for some, and when it came time for refills on our drinks and napkins she seemed bothered by that (she did look overwhelmed as they were fairly busy). The other waitress who took over our table was very nice and provided better service.

Joelle Z.

Yelp
The food was very good. We enjoyed this restaurant. This restaurant appears to be a place that the locals eat. It was recommended by an employee at the hotel where we stayed.

Jayden M.

Yelp
Amazing great food roccomnde shrimp dinner worker did have a crush on my brother but good sirvice

Rebecca T.

Yelp
My husband and I had supper here and it was really good. He had the Stuffed Sopaipilla and it was a large plate and tasty. I had the cheese enchiladas, Christmas. The green sauce was hot but had a nice full green chile flavor. The red sauce was milder. We couldn't have had a better meal in Santa Fe. And don't miss the sopaipillas with honey for dessert.

Desiree E.

Yelp
Omg, a hidden gem in Chile, right by Romero's Fruit Stand. Outside od Espanola. Excellent food, in all the years and times we passed by, our relatives took us to dinner there. We came back for breakfast & dinner again. Chicken Quesadillas were a hit with my grandsons. My daughter and I are hooked on the Green Chile stew on everything. We will be back. but not soon enough

Sebastion M.

Yelp
The food is astonishing The service is great And the ambience is amazing when the restaurant isn't full.

Yelp
Best food we had our whole vacation! Stopped by on our way back from Taos. I had the stuffed sopapilla. YUM! Hubby had the breakfast burrito (for dinner). Both REALLY hit the spot. Food was freshly made and came piping hot. SO DELICIOUS and for a great price. Well worth the detour. Friendly service too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
google avatar

Josh O.

Yelp
What a fantastic restaurant! It's popular enough that you might have to wait for a table, but it's absolutely worth it. Haven't tried their pizza yet, but their enchiladas and tamales are top notch. Both were offered with the choice of tortillas or sopaipillas, and while the tortillas were very good, there's really no actual choice here, you want the sopaipillas.

Yelp
The locals seem to really know about this one...very pleasant staff, as well as efficient with nice, clean food....better enchilada then MANY of the higher end Santa Fe restaurants. Prices were reasonable and the sopapillas were some of the best I can remember but there are apparently two cooks, and we seemed to hit the day when they are really good. Good find on the way to Abiquiu.
google avatar

Andrew Q.

Yelp
Everything was delicious and fresh.... Sopapillas we fluffy and tasty.... Definitely coming back here everytime I come out to hunt....

Yelp
Excellent service and food. Chicken fajitas are delicious. Plus, bathroom chair.. need I say more? 10/10

Yelp
Seeing more than a few cars parked, I decided to stop for a bite on my way through the town. Soooo very glad I did! I ordered red chicken enchiladas and it was the best I'd had in a long time! The red enchilada sauce tasted smoky with a hint of sweet. It was amazing. The accompanying beans and rice were cooked perfectly, and the sopapillas were huge and hot and fresh. All in all a very tasty and satisfying experience.
google avatar

Bailey P.

Yelp
I came with a group of 21, 15 being teenagers. They were very accommodating and sat us outside on their pretty patio with fans and water misters. The food came quick and it was AMAZING portions for the price! Socorro came out and made sure our dinner was as expected and offered sopapillas with honey. She is SO sweet!!! The sopapillas were amazing along with the fajitas and stuffed sopapilla! I would highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Food is gooooood here! My fav place to eat when I don't want to go into Town for take out. Keep up the great work!

Yelp
The best authentic Spanish food I've eaten I would stop here anytime. Service was excellent. The owner even took the time to greet us .
google avatar

Janet A.

Yelp
We've often passed by Socorro's and my husband had always mentioned wanting to stop and eat...well today was the day. My husband got beef enchiladas Christmas and I had a small Hawaiian pizza. Both were very good. Yelp had a great coupon which made me even happier!

Beth A.

Yelp
it wasn't busy but we waited several minutes to be seated. The menu was smeared, you couldn't read it! Service was not only slow but nonattentive. My husband's combo plate looked horrible & wasn't tasty either. We had looked forward to trying Socorro's but will never go back. It didn't appear to be a very clean or sanitary kitchen. Neither of us is feeling well on the morning after.

Chula B.

Yelp
One of the best omelettes we've ever had. The kids loved their pancakes and the hot chocolate. We feel lucky to have discovered this institution full of welcoming signs and community memories. Thank you!

Jonmark P.

Yelp
This is some of the best New Mexican food anywhere - it's clear that the owner cares about details. Really, really good food, friendly service and unpretentious atmosphere - well worth the drive up from Santa Fe or Albuquerque!

L M.

Yelp
This restaurant has wonderfully priced food and the food is made fresh to order. Unbelievably good food. A heads up...you need to be patient as the food can take a bit of time to make so don't be in a hurry when you come to eat here.
google avatar

R L.

Yelp
Socorro's is our go-to breakfast place when traveling south from northern NM towards Albuquerque. The Huevos Rancheros are awesome. I've had both the red and the green versions... think I prefer green. The plate is filled with beans, rice, chile and eggs, sitting on top of corn tortillas. Another treat are the breakfast burritos - my preference being bacon, smothered with green chile (you can order "hand-held", aka dry). Options also include grated cheese and onion. My family has had the bacon and eggs as well as ham and eggs, and they've thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Service is hometown friendly, and this is definitely a local's establishment. Oh... the breakfast burrito, on my profile pic, is one my daughter ordered a couple of years ago.

Len F.

Yelp
I've been eating there for years, never again. I ate there a few days ago and the portions were meager. The owners son, Ivan has taken over management and he has reduced the portions of the dishes drastically. While the food is still delicious the portions are so small that when I left I was still hungry. The sopapillas are about 50% smaller than before. The owners son, Ivan is a very fat and rude person. Very disrespectful.
google avatar

Larada H.

Yelp
Fantastic Mexican food with delightful wait staff & Socorro often grants you. Easy access for big RV rig.
google avatar

Libby M.

Yelp
In a word, gross. My girlfriend said it was possibly one of the worst meals of her life. We were running to an appointment, and we were starving. We debated between just grabbing a protein bar at the Chevron or waiting for take-out here. Should have gone with the protein bar. She had a chicken burrito and the chicken was so dry it was hard, like "chicken kibble" she said. I ordered the sopapilla burger, because I had a delicious sopapilla in Santa Fe and hoping for more of the same. What I got was a dry, pre-formed frozen burger patty on a flavorless, limp slab of fried dough. The fries, at least, were edible. I feel a little bad because the cashier/server was very nice, but the food was just terrible.
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
Food is good BUT the service we got from a guy named Ivan really was bad !! I've called there before and I'm asking about prices for food and he is just plain RUDE..... Than tonight we went to pick up an order to go but I forgot the side of nacho cheese, the nice waiter guy asked that rude manager Ivan guy how much the cheese is and he said 3.99. Really? Nevermind I said, than I hear him say Well that's MY WAY , MY PRICES. That will be the last time we eat there. The owner is really nice Socorro Herrera but she needs to teach her rude son some manners and have him take a class in Customer service..... Why u gotta be so rude ?? U Should be happy people go eat there.
google avatar

Dustyn B.

Yelp
Just great! We stopped here somewhat by accident as our GPS took us to the wrong place, but we are glad we did. We all ordered something different and enjoyed everything. The sopapillas were amazing with our meals.

Paul F.

Yelp
I ate at Socorro's in Hernandez, NM. My wife had huevos rancheros and I had stuffed sopapillas green. The chili was very tasty and quite hot. The sopapillas were delicious. Socorro herself came out and greeted us. She remembered me from previous visit. And was concerned about the chili. I would certainly stop at Socorro's again.
google avatar

Kenn K.

Yelp
While on a weekend getaway, my wife and I stopped in for breakfast. Excellent choice. I had heveros ranchoes, and my wife enjoyed the breakfast burrito. Both had great flavor, and weren't to spicy. The service was great, and very friendly. We are already looking forward to going back for dinner tonight.
google avatar

Carl T.

Yelp
I found this place last summer driving up to Colorado for vacation. I try to find local places to eat at and I also found Socorro's by accident, actually more like good luck. I had breakfast on the way up and lunch on the way back. I made sure I found it again this year on my trek. I had Lorenzo's omelet with green chile sauce for breakfast (excellent) and the tortillas were South Texas good. On the way back, I had the green chile frito pie and it was fantastic. The homemade sopapillas were amazing. Last year for lunch I had the chicken stuffed sopapilla and it was very tasty as well. Service has always been very friendly and while it isn't a large place, it is very clean and comfortable. One of these days I gotta try the pizza. Socorro's has become a standard stopping place whenever I roll through the area.

Yelp
Reataurants.com, please remove this restaurant from your list of purchases. 1. Menus online are not accurate. 2. RUDE service- call in order, certificate not accepted, because wait staff didn't know how to proc ss Restaurant.com certificate. 3. Steak dinner and FORGOT salad 4. "Kid" that answered the phone when I called back about certificate and forgotten salad and asked me if I just called to cause problems. 5. Steak dry for being $15.95, according to web. 6. 1/2 order of the nchilada (1 corn tortilla, a little bit of beef, cheese, a small side of rice and beans $6.00. (Person who answered the he phone couldn't answer the question of prove) 7. Person who answered phone kept Restaurant.com certificate without honoring it. Plus side. 1. Chicharron burrito good 2. Chile tasty. Would we go back? NO I WILL FOREGO THE CERTIFICATES AND BE AT A LOSS. We live less than 2 miles from restaurant and WILL NOT return. Good luck on the future of this economy. Close? Wouldn't care...

Yelp
This is probably the 4th time I've been here. I try to stop by when I'm in the area on my way to Colorado or for work. The food is good and relatively authentic. The atmosphere is what you would expect - a northern New Mexico theme. Not an overly "Mexican" theme with dated furniture and pictures circa 1974. They are very proud of the fact that they have celebrities visit from time to time but I only see 3 or 4 photos. Nothing too impressive, like the local news reporter. (No offense). The problem I have with this place is that the staff treats the restaurant like their own kitchen, talking and visiting with each other, but they forget that they have customers in the restaurant. I've finished eating about 10 minutes ago and my dirty plate is still sitting in front of me.
google avatar

Larry S.

Yelp
Stopped in on our way back from the ghost ranch for a bite to eat. Place is a little road side restaurant that looks like a little authentic New Mexico site. Went in and was greeted and seated quickly. Ordered the carne Ava dado and it was awesome. Chips and salsa were great as well. Give this place an a+

Tanya S.

Yelp
We stopped here on a whim and are so glad we did. Yummy food, great wait staff and a lovely welcome from Socorro herself. Recommend dining on the patio if weather permits. (We were there during apricot season and Socorro let us pick from the tree.) A real find on the road between Taos and Santa Fe.

Jo S.

Yelp
They have lost me as a customer. The cook did not read the order correctly. The food was just put on the table in styrofoam containers, was served cold and absolutely no effort was made to place it on an acceptable plate. The menudo that I ordered appears to be very spoiled and must be disposed of. Money down the drain. Very upsetting.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here to eat on Saturday, March 29, 2014. The food was out of this world! I haven't seen many restaurants/cafes that offer corned beef with breakfast. I had corned beef, 2 eggs over medium, potatoes, green chile and the best sopapillas I have had in years! Everything was superb! I even got to meet Socorro herself, an awesome woman and so friendly! I noticed that the moment she got to the restaurant, she greeted each and every customer by going to their table! I would eat there again in a heartbeat! Highly recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
Great handheld breakfast burritos. I got the red chili bacon. I'm sure the green is even better. Quick turnaround too.

Yelp
My first time there . I was in a rush to get to Phoenix by 10 PM from Ojo Caliente, NM, and did a pit stop there at 1 PM, for lunch. I had the Pozole and it was very good. The staff - family and homey and attentive. The prices are great! My meal cost $6.75! I would indeed return.
