The Best Hotels in Amsterdam

"Housed in the Bungehuis building in the center of the city, this canalside Soho House has a rooftop pool with views overlooking the city. A Cecconi's and a Cowshed spa are landing this September. And in a nod to the cycling city, there will be a bicycle repair shop in the basement too." - Amber Port

Maternity Moons Are Now a Thing

"We stayed in boutique hotels that were baby friendly—like the Hoxton Paris and the new Soho House Amsterdam—and we took it pretty easy."

Soho House Amsterdam

"We've heard a lot of buzz about this place—what's the deal? The opening of Soho House Amsterdam has been one of the most-hyped launches in Europe of 2018. Located in, according to locals,"the heart of everything," on the Spruistraat, the hotel has taken over the imposing Bungehuis, a circa-1930s trading building-turned-university. Staff dash out to open the taxi door of your transfer, so your first thought is about the quality and friendliness of the service, followed by the grandness of the building: It has a distinctly older feel and vibe, mixed with contemporary, stylish finishes. Sounds lovely. How's the crowd?Soho House members are easy to spot; they're typically well-groomed, well-dressed, well-spoken, well-heeled, and, well, relaxed. (Think of Soho House as their happy place.) Guests are a mix of the international jet set (especially Brits who have a special affinity with the homegrown brand) and cool locals. Apart from some key Houses, members need to contribute to the creative scene in order to be offered membership, so you’ll likely hear quite a bit of film and music chat, and rarely spot a suit. Got it. Back to the hotel: How was check in, getting to your room, and all of that?Check-in was the fastest I’ve ever experienced: We were ferried from the car to the reception desk, and promptly given our key. The introduction to the room was also super quick—the only thing to note is that the door isn't auto-locking, so we had to use a real key to close it up. There are a lot of lights—10!—but dimming and turning them off is easy and intuitive. AC was a little harder to work out, but nothing that can’t be figured out by punching buttons, and a little bit of trial and error. The room feels like it might be in your cool grandparents' house, and the tech is reassuringly simple, which adds to the overall sense of comfort and relaxation you feel. Tell us more about the room.It wasn't huge, though the bed was—it was definitely the biggest and softest we’ve ever slept on. The room smells like every other Soho House (Cowshed products and a hint of fresh paint), and the interior is very Art Deco, with a sprinkling of modern touches: think a curved, mahogany bar-cupboard, a dark blue and cream color scheme, and a leather headboard. A peachy, shell-shaped chair—a signature of Soho House properties—sat in the corner, and a large multi-colored rug could be seen under the bed. Pictures were framed with wood of different shades and uniquely hung from the upper skirting board via two chunky, swing-like chains. The wardrobe was just a shiny, exposed bar, and the bathroom had a signature rain shower and an oversized sink, plus a rippled-glass shower door. Any special details we should know?WiFi was free, fast and, if you’d been to another Soho House, you didn’t even have to log in. The line of very large Cowshed bottles always generates a wow moment—primarily because of the colors of the multi-hued bottles, then because of the clever "knackered/grumpy/lazy cow" names, which focus on the mood of the user, rather than the gel in the bottle. The second "wow" moment was inspired by the mini-bar, which, as well as being contained in a stylish 1930s-style bar cupboard, also contained a pre-mixed Old Fashioned in a small liquor bottle. There were cookies in the silver treat jar, as well as a "drawer of snacks" filled with Goop-esque treats including tomato chips, dried broccoli, dark chocolate, and cashews, plus the usual Pringles and Kit Kats. The initial wow factor, though, is the height of the ceiling, the size of the bed, and the intricate way the pictures are hung. One other thing to add—a drinks trolley makes the rounds to each room between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., and you can order an espresso martini or another cocktail to ease into the evening. That's a nice little feature. Speaking of service: If you could aware one staff member a trophy, who gets it, and why?Nick Jones (the founder) was staying the weekend we were there. He’s incredibly gregarious and charismatic, and charming, not to mention very "on brand." Apparently, his weekend was made because "the water pressure in the bathrooms was just right." Any other services or features you want to shout out? Childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The pool on the roof in a city without a rooftop scene is particularly cool (though it rained the whole weekend we were there, we felt better knowing it was up there). The Cowshed spa offers blowouts (though you can book one in-room, if you prefer), speedy manis and pedis, and 30-minute facials and massages. The gym is also more special than most, with great views over the city’s tall, skinny houses, eclectic equipment, and a TRX room as well as a yoga studio. Male and female changing rooms connect to a steam room and sauna (where guests must wear swimwear). And, unrelated to the services, we had a three-course Champagne lunch on a canal boat during our stay. Yes, it was a special occasion, but being right next to the canal was super-convenient. That's a must-do. So, bottom line: Worth it, and why?Absolutely. We left feeling rejuvenated—Soho House Amsterdam manages to feel both extremely relaxed, and in the middle of the action. Also, it’s worth it just for the huge, supremely comfortable beds." - Becky Lucas

Google
This bar in Amsterdam is a whole vibe. Walked in for “one drink” and somehow ended up making friends with the bartender, Drinks? Amazing. Music? Staff? The kind that makes you feel like you’ve been coming here for years. If you’re looking for a place to laugh, and feel like the main character of your own movie this is the spot. 100% would go back.

Everyone was so helpful it was my first night out in Amsterdam and everyone was so attentive. The bouncer super lovely the bar staff was quick and the girls doing a show were great. Will come back again and check out what's Friday like.

I went yesterday and Kay and Quin took great care of me. The music was good, but it wasn’t too crowded since it was just a Wednesday. I’ll definitely come back this weekend to enjoy it with my friends.

I had a glow in the dark party at SoHo last week and it was amazing! The staff is lovely, the vibes are great and the different floors of the venue are so nice. Must visit :)

Google
The bar is an interesting one, but probably is better not to attend in the happy hours, cause its getting crowded. Its mostly a gay bar, where you feel comfortable. The downside is the you have to pay for the toilet. The prices are high as Amsterdam prices are. I recommend it for the music and atmosphere. Nice bartenders.

Google
Kay was incredibly friendly and made navigating the bar a breeze—it felt like a five-star experience. Dance the night away, but for the best drinks, be sure to ask for Kay!

Google
Went with my friends & ordered a round of drinks & then went back for a TAP water, he told me only bottled water is served. By regulation if you provide alcohol you must provide tap water. People have water between rounds to help with hangovers, will not be going back & hope they are educated on responsible service of alcohol.

Yelp
Fun place with an interesting atmosphere. It feels like a corner/friendly bar, especially right when you enter, but then there's a dance floor, and then there are stairs that take you up to the second floor which is another bar/club combo depending on what the patrons are feeling, and then it goes up to the toilets (remember, this is Europe, so you've got to pay to pee if you're there on a busy night). Definitely a fun mix of atmosphere, with an interesting mix of people. During my stay in Amsterdam I went here twice. The first was a busy Friday night, the second time was a quiet Monday night and it was neat seeing how the space was used differently on the different nights. The only downside to this place was on the slower night, when the bartender didn't speak English, and I got some interesting drinks made (but a part of that was also just being unfamiliar with European tender customs - like what mixers are available, what mixers need to be paid for, etc).

Yelp
DO NOT GO TO THIS BAR!!! The security guard there has severe anger management issues. This is the worst bar experience I have had in my lifetime. After purchasing drinks, I left me friends to get in line for the restroom. I waited in line behind about 4 or 5 people to use the restroom. As I got to the front of the line, I realized they required payment, I told them that I wasn't going to pay to piss after buying a drink. Left the bathroom area to rejoin my group. The "bathroom attendant" and security guard (although at the time I didn't know who he was) approached me, laid his hands on me to escort me out. No conversation or explanation. He was physically aggressive and verbally abusive to all members of my group. We were physically afraid for our lives and well being.

Yelp
SoHo is a great little spot. It's across the street from Taboo so early in the evening it's not as busy. They throw open the doors in the warm months and it is nice to sit outside. As the night gets later the crowd pics up! It becomes very crowded on the second floor but that is the fun spot for people watching! The crowd is a pretty good mix - older and younger. They do not take American credit cards so have plenty of Euro.

Yelp
SoHo is a great place to grab a drink and socialize. We typically prefer this place to the other gay bars in the area, although they are generally not busy until much later. They don't offer the kinds of specials the other bars do which is somewhat disappointing and probably leads to the quieter patronage. But their regular prices aren't unreasonable. Bar tenders are always very friendly and easy to look at. They don't take American credit cards, so bring cash. There is an ATM around the corner if you need more. They tend to have good music later and it is plenty large to handle the more party-esque crowd that shows up. The place has bars on the first and second floor but the second floor bar doesn't get busy until late. The bathrooms are up a narrow staircase on a third level. I would recommend this bar to anyone visiting Amsterdam.

Yelp
This bar is now re-opened in Amsterdam. Always popular, definitely worth visiting. The crowd is really mixed - young and old. Drinks are cheap. Great during the summer as the crowd spills out onto the street. Smallish dance floor.

Yelp
Fun, attractive bar with a friendly staff and a nice, easy-going vibe. Cool decor, although the toilet is all the way on the third floor, which must be entertaining as the alcohol pours throughout the evening.
