I am so sad to be writing this. I was considering getting a membership at SoHo and, I decided to attend a Pilates class open to the public as a part of my first experience at SoHo. The class and instructor were wonderful. We were hungry afterwards and noticed that there were smoothies available for purchase. We asked the attendant at the gym where we could buy some and he told us to head to the bar area to buy them. He knew neither my friend or I were members. We went downstairs and asked a man where the bar was located. My friend and I (both POC) received freebies from the class (towel, mist, water) and were carrying these in our hand. The man asked us if we were guests at the hotel or had a membership. We responded “No”. He said “If the answer to both of those questions is no, then you’re not allowed here.” We immediately walked out and were shocked by the condescending and rude tone used by him. If this is what exclusivity looks like, I want no part of it. As far as I’m aware, the restaurant is open to the public. If it isn’t, then he could have explained that to us in a kind and professional way. It truly felt like my friend and I were discriminated against because of our dark skin and because we were carrying several freebies from our class, so I guess he thought we were just taking stuff? I’ve never been treated so rudely. I have stayed in 5-star hotels all around the country and, I have NEVER experienced this type of treatment. If there was something limited to members, he could’ve explained that in a kind way. I guess these are the type of people that SoHo house hires and their definition of exclusivity is the condensing, look down on others type. Extremely disappointed and hurt. I don’t think I’ll ever be coming back here again if I can help it.
