"Owned by award-winning sommelier Véronique Rivest, Soif somehow flies under the radar in Gatineau. Located in a former burger joint over the bridge in Hull, the restaurant boasts a winning, natural-leaning wine list. Food offerings are French with plenty of nods to Canada, like bison tartare and a local Quebec cheese board. Soif also offers private wine-tasting workshops." - Joel Balsam, Tim Forster, Eater Staff

"Sommelier Véronique Rivest is world-famous, let alone Canada famous, and this small space is where she's settled after taking the wine world by storm. The 120-plus bottles on Soif's ever-transforming wine list have the element of surprise in common; although they're not all big, bold showstoppers, they're all noteworthy and truly memorable, either because they challenge the palate, because they come from little-known wine regions, or because they're simply the very best possible complement to chef Jamie Stunt's menu of seasonal small plates." - Todd Plummer, Isa Tousignant

Now this is a great establishment! The menu consists of mainly tapas which are meant to pair with certain wines and the server was very well versed on this. We had four different tapas and they were all exquisite. The Italian and Austrian wines we had were excellent. Though they do offer spirits as well the wines is what you come here for. All in all a fun and pleasant experience. 👍😎

Wonderful little place with a really great and quirky cork theme. I stopped by with two friends to celebrate my birthday. The wine flights were very nice and the charcuterie cheese board had some impressive offerings. Wine flights come in threes but you can’t mix and match). The service was prompt and the details offered about every wine was extensive. They know there stuff here for sure. They had a fair number of vegetarian options and all the staff were bilingual.

Have been to Soif multiple times and each time is such a treat! A group of us came tonight for a NYE dinner. No nonsense overpriced menus. Just their delicious regular offerings which never disappoint! The food was spectacular, the wine was on point and the service was so attentive and friendly all around. We had a great time and would highly recommend Soif for a romantic date night with your partner or just a night out with friends!

Google
As someone with multiple allergies, Soif Bar à vin was incredible! Not only did our server see my notes in our reservation for allergies but came back with the menu to let me know of the options I could choose from. Additionally they verified everything with the kitchen to make sure I was able to eat it. It is rare that I ever have options on a menu and was able to try multiple things for the first time in my life! The meals were delicious, easy small plates to share and have a bit of everything. I went in for a drink with friends, with little expectation on food and came out with a full belly, a wonderful evening and kind and gracious staff. Will absolutely be coming here more often!

Google
Wonderful restaurant! I highly recommend if you love small plates and excellent wine pairings. Love how the cheese board and charcuterie board includes new discoveries. Staff are great at suggesting wine pairings, you can taste a couple and then choose your favourite. Extensive selection of wine and other beverages. Easy five stars!

My wife and I had a day date and we found the staff fantastic and the restaurant environment was welcoming and beautiful .The food was delicious and the staff pairing the wine with the food was on point. The money spent was well worth it, we very much enjoyed it and will return in the future. And the staff

I found Soif while doing a search in Eater for restaurants in the area. We were looking for a place to have Valentines Day dinner while in Ottawa for two days. The review was amazing and our experience was even better. The staff was highly attentive and well-knowledgeable on the courses, ingredients, cooking style and wine. We had the prix fixe menu for the evening with premium wine pairings and I’m glad that we chose that. The seating and environment is intimate and I’d highly recommend it for a special occasion or anytime you’d like a great dining experience.

Google
The issue with this place isn't the restaurant. The owner is amazing, the staff are great, the food is delicious and unique, and the wines are guaranteed to impress. (Though you'll pay a premium for their years of experience and global wine knowledge) The remaining issue for me is the lack of parking. There's a few spots in front but other than that if you don't get lucky and get those, you'll need to park at other businesses (ie the theatre if you're seeing a show there) or walk.

Yelp
Was looking for a wine bar and wanted something different. What sets this spot apart from other wine bars is that they specialize in organic wines. The selection is huge so getting recommendations is very important. I decided to go with a good wine pairing so I could try many different wines. I was not disappointed with the selections. The staff knew so much about every bottle and had a story to go along with it. Service was impressive. The food was good. The highlights were the charcuterie board, pork belly and Brussel sprouts. Ambience was casual and low key. It was a good experience especially having the opportunity to learn and try so much.

Yelp
Great food. Friendly service. Cool vibes. Delicious wines that are reasonably priced. Quiet neighborhood but worth the journey. Fun and fine dining.

Yelp
Quebec always makes Canada look super good. The passion for wine and food here is unmatched. Put your faith in the hands of the staff and you will have an unforgettable evening.

Yelp
Came in here with my wife for a date night. The location is within the ever so changing Hull clubbing/dining area. There isn't much around this area and I would definitely not park in the empty lot of garage next door. The ambiance is nice and clean. They had a mix of retro and light house music. We both had a selection of their flights of wine. My wife had the mixed white wine flight and I had a selection of Pino Noirs. Their flights are moderately priced from $22 for 4 glasses of whites and $28 for their flights of Pino noir's. They main serve small plates but their portions are a good size for sharing between groups of 2-4 ppl. We had a small charcuterie plate ($18) there is a large available at ($32); we then had a great rainbow trout plate ($22), fiddle heads ($16) and lamb sausage ($18). All the food was great. My favourites were the trout and the fiddleheads. The trout was cooked perfectly. Crispy clean skin with a soft textured interior and no fishy taste. The fiddleheads were lightly cooked. There was a great portion that came with the meal and they were lightly seasoned. The desserts were amazing. We ordered both their chocolate tart and their honey cream tart. Both had their own unique taste flavours. If you are a chocolate lover the chocolate tarts is amazing and rich. A little too rich for my blood. I enjoyed the light cream honey tart with the rhubarb topping and freeze dried cloves. Great light summer dessert. I highly recommend Soif but it is a bit on the pricey side for all our food and wine the bill was about $200/ 2 ppl

Yelp
Location: In Gatineau. Street parking is available but I'm not sure if it's metered on weekdays/ nights since I went on a Saturday (also didn't notice if there were meters!). The place: Beautiful and unique decor, with cork walls, and light fixtures made up of wine glasses. My friend particularly liked the stools that were essentially, very large bottle corks! They also play excellent music! Great vibes all around. The goods: My friend ordered the 3 2oz wine glasses that allowed her to try three different wines, and she enjoyed them. Since our waiter told me that their wines were mostly all of the dry variety, I only tried a rosé (it was nice) then headed over to the strawberry-infused rum with lime, which was positively delicious and to answer our waiter's question, yes, yes I would like an entire pitcher to myself . Since dishes are meant to be shared, we decided to order the small charcuterie plate, the vegetable tempura, mushroom conserva and tuna. Everything was delicious, and the tempura was only lightly coated with crunchy goodness and not at all greasy. The charcuterie plate had a great variety of different items and the only item we were less crazy about was the smoked duck (but then, I don't think either of us were duck fans to begin with so it is really a matter of personal taste). For dessert, my friend had the trifle and I had the very delicious, unctuous chocolate tart. Service: Good. We were also satisfied with the measures they took to ensure a safe experience. The host gave us hand sanitizer when we walked in, and masks are required when moving around the restaurant. The wait staff wore face shields and masks as well. Price point: With taxes, it was about $170 for two people. Great little spot to check out in Gatineau! (But remember to wear your mask!)

Yelp
Opened by the 2nd best sommelier, Véronique Rivest, Soif is a wine bar/restaurant serving up some real French cuisine and exquisite wines for pairings. The walls of Soif are made out of cork, resembling wine corks and their stools look like giant muselets. Everything about Soif revolves around wine. We had their Foie Gras Jam Spread, Ricotta and Mushroom Ragu on Toast, Corn Fritters with Sea Urchin Butter, Lamb Ragu and Rabbit Kidneys. Everything was so savory, French (haha), and unique. We paired a white wine with the Foie Gras and the Ricotta Mushroom then an earthy red with the rest. My favourites were the Rabbit Kidney and the Corn Fritters.

Yelp
*Wine tasting experience only* We came here just for the wine after dinner hours with the kitchen closed and were pleasantly surprised when we were told they were happy to accommodate us for wine tastings. They close up when customers decide to leave, talk about excellent customer service! We tried a flight and a natural wine that our group was interested in and the waitress was kind to explain and go through the options with us in great care. The atmosphere of the back of the restaurant is so lovely with the woody-ness and wine glass decor. Prices were exceptionally reasonable given its prestige.

Yelp
Thoroughly enjoyed the food and drinks here. I came on a weekday evening after work, and immediately felt cozy. The place is dim and has tables of different heights. The waiter was really friendly and talkative! I tried: - The oysters: very fresh, from new Brunswick. Plump and perfectly salty. - Mushroom ragout: this was very rich and satisfying, it seemed there were quite a few varieties of mushrooms in it! - Bison tartare: seasoned well, this was a delight to put on the toasts. You can really taste the freshness of the meat, and there isn't too much salt! - Wine: they have an impressive list of wines, and the waiter was very helpful and quick in suggesting some wines. I would definitely go back to try their other dishes!

Yelp
What a fun and exciting place. I can't even explain how refreshing it is to see such a quaint place that serves outstanding food to pair with the remarkable selection of wines Veronique has featured. The diversity of the wines selected here and the knowledge brought to us for the food pairing suspected from our server was above and beyond. (Thank you, Brittany!) We arrived here sans reservation and were fortunate to get a table. It was around 4:30 pm so there were a few tables available which completely filled up soon after. The food AND the wine were the best I've ever had in a dining experience. If you go anywhere to dine and want to have an exciting adventure - this place is for you!

Yelp
A delightful place that must be experienced! A local restauranteur shared that the sommelier here was one of the best in the world and elected to stay in Gatineau. I experienced wines from around the world and all of the servers are "Soms"= trained professionally without the aire of knowing more than you. The menu had some very unique simple things like roasted broccoli with an aged cheddar side. The fried beets were delicious accompanied with a light dill dipping sauce. The mushrooms with homemade ricotta was a hit for me, but not unless you love them. To wrap up a wonderful evening - we finished with the blood orange pound cake ! I should add that we walked from Ottawa to the History museam and then to Soif- a beautiful stroll before/ after dinner if you enjoy fresh air!

Yelp
This spot has been on my radar for a long time. You could drive by and miss it. A pleasant night out for two. But it would seem they are well set up for four, six, eight and I think a room on off to the side for larger private groups. Small plates well prepared. Charcuterie plates and fantastic cheeses. The wine selection is intriguing and the staff well educated in the cellar to assist with any questions on many of the wines that are not readily available via LCBO or SAQ. Looking forward to my return and sampling the charcuterie which we missed out on.

Julianne M.

Yelp
I am no sommelier, but thankfully our waiter was. There are small plates and boards locally sourced and seasonal - but the emphasis is absolutely on wine. I know that I enjoy a dry red and only ever order one drink - a cabernet sauvignon. With this knowledge our waiter paired each of our dishes with a drink to accompany it perfectly - and the experience felt so personal. You can order half glasses and taste more wines. Five small plates and two desserts were perfect for two hungry diners, paired with the wine and quality of the food this meal was reasonably priced and felt like a special occasion. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Don't let the wine menu intimidate you. Even if you're far from an oenologist (I definitely am not), the waiters will help you make a choice without shaming you. The ciders I've had here were always amazing. The food is extraordinary. I've had a vegetarian episode once, and I was able to combine a few plates that took me to Cloud 9. More recently, I had an incredibly satisfying trout. This is a gem in the national capital region. Don't hesitate: go.

Yelp
I admit that I was a little disappointed with the restaurant/wine bar. The reviews have been incredible, and our experience was fairly average. The food was certainly good, but the selection was very limited. It was also very expensive. While the wine selection is amazing, we didn't have the privilege of a sommelier. Our waitress recommended fairly standard fare. Whether these experiences may have been due to our attendance on a weeknight, I'm not sure it's any better on the weekend. Anyway, everything was fine, just not outstanding and not worth the price.

Rachel W.

Yelp
The food was underwhelming and the price point was just too high. I left hungry with a large dent in my wallet.

Yelp
Amazing! Truly an exceptional restaurant. I am surprised there are not more reviews here on Yelp. From the moment you walk in the door, you know that you've come to a place that is in the business of serving wine. Floors and walls are covered in cork. Wine maps are everywhere. The hostess is professional. WIne glasses are about the tables. The wine list is eclectic and should be: You are here to try wines that you wouldn't experience elsewhere. You can order half and full glasses which makes the decision-making process easier. (Of course, you can always commit to a bottle). Servers are well informed and have their individual preferences. They are trained to be there for you and not necessarily repeating what they are supposed to sell you. Food is excellent. Unrushed. Casual, despite its élan and purposeful design (the food is really intended to go with particular wines). Don't expect to come here if you are in a rush. The restaurant is excellent for a romantic dinner for two, but equally good for a group of 4 or 6. There is a special area where even larger groups can come. And in the summer, there is an exceptional patio. There are many reasons why this restaurant has received considerable acclaim.

Oscar C.

Yelp
Staying at Crowne Plaza Gatineau, we found this restaurant when walking around the neighborhood. We were told by the waiter that they were the best wine bar in town. As none of us drank, we just wanted to fill our empty stomachs. With no dinner menu, we ordered a bunch of small dishes. The oysters were fresh. The bread was fresh and tasty. I was most impressed by the pork dish that was the special of the night. When the waiter introduced us the salty peacon pie, we didn't expect it was so tasty that it actually became the highlight of the night.

Fabio P.

Yelp
The patio is something incredible, food is really good and wine selection is wonderful. Go for a night drink or lunch in the middle of the week and just enjoy.

Mark R.

Yelp
We ate dinner at Soif on a Friday night. We were seated promptly upon arrival. It has a nice atmosphere with interesting décor. The service was friendly and knowledgeable. Interesting wines were offered by the glass. For example: three different types of a Bourgeuil from the Loire valley. The food was all very tasty. I was disappointed when my main course arrived cold on a cold plate. I did not want to send it back because I wanted to eat at the same time as my wife. Also I was disappointed with the bread - thick slices of white bread. I am a fan of sliced baguette. Overall it was a very pleasant and interesting night out. We will most likely not return.

Mat D.

Yelp
What a great place. We went for my wife's birthday and were greeted very warmly. The wine selection is second to none. Food is small plates but very very good. One great feature is the option to order 2 oz glasses so you can compare two wines with any given plate. They gave us a very generous pour and some free truffles as a birthday gift. The Charcuterie plate well worth it.

Damien R.

Yelp
