Sol De Mexico Review - Cragin - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Knowing things that other people don’t can be useful. Just ask a spy, or that guy from Jeopardy! who probably owns an island by now. That’s why it feels so good to know about a great neighborhood restaurant. You can sit back and enjoy a low-key dinner, secure in the knowledge that someone else is sitting in a crowded downtown spot where they had to reserve a table months in advance. And Sol De Mexico is a neighborhood restaurant you want in your mental arsenal. This casual sit-down Mexican spot in Craigin-Belmont looks kind of like an art gallery, with sculptures, paintings, and masks hanging all over. You’ll find white tablecloths on all the tables and tissue paper accents on the plates, but the overall atmosphere is low-key, and it works for a casual weeknight dinner or laidback date. photo credit: Sandy Noto The menu changes regularly (four times a year, to be exact), and includes dishes you probably don’t see all the time. Like papadzules - tasty corn tortillas filled with hard-boiled eggs, covered in pumpkin seed mole and a chili-habanero sauce. Or a perfectly cooked rabbit with a smoky guajillo salsa. That said, there are also staples you can always count on, like slightly sweet corn tamales in a spicy chicaca cream sauce (a must-order), and a tender rack of lamb in a delicious black mole. Speaking of mole, all the sauces here are fantastic, and, like Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar On Me, improve just about everything. While the sauces are reliably delicious, not everything is a hit. For example, you’ll frequently come across a very dry piece meat or fish. Like bland diced chicken breast in the enchiladas, or overcooked carne asada and salmon that both really need the moisture from their sauces. We’ve also had the unnerving experience of finding chicken bones in the shredded-chicken-filled masa boats. But as long as you focus on what this place does really well (i.e. moles and anything with lamb or rabbit), you’ll have a good meal. Thanks to the internet, you probably haven’t needed to use a secret decoder ring in a long time. After all, these days information is easy to come by, so unless you’re trying to figure out the Instagram algorithm, it’s generally pretty simple to find out what you want to know. Still, not everyone’s aware of all the best neighborhood restaurants, and if you’re not, you’re missing out. So the the next time you want a laidback dinner with tasty and interesting Mexican food, keep Sol De Mexico in mind. Food Rundown photo credit: Sandy Noto Sopestitos Surtidos Xilonen If you want an appetizer with a range of flavors, this is a great choice. It’s four masa boats, each with a different filling - chicken in red mole, plantains with sour cream, black beans with chorizo, and one with just guacamole. Our favorites are the ones with plantains and chicken. And if you ask, they’ll customize and give you whatever fillings you want. Uchepos Tarascos Gratinados Honestly, these tamales are almost sweet enough to be like a dessert, but we don’t care. Because they’re lightly covered in cheese and a spicy chilaca cream sauce that balances everything out. They’re moist and absolutely delicious. Order this. Tlacoyos De Frijol Negro These are bean-filled masa pockets. The dough is chewy like a pizza roll, and the black bean filling is pretty bland. The chipotle salsa on top is great, but it doesn’t make this dish worth ordering. photo credit: Sandy Noto Pernil Al Pibil This dish is a DIY taco situation. It’s anchiote marinated pork shoulder, served with black beans and pickled red onions. And most importantly, some thick housemade corn tortillas. Make sure you order extras of those. Borrego En Mole Negro The lamb is perfectly cooked, and comes with rice and a rich, dark mole. This is a great plate of food. photo credit: Sandy Noto Enchiladas De Mole Rojo These enchiladas are a great example of how the sauces carry some of the dishes. The red mole is complex, spicy, and delicious. It prevents the dry grilled chicken breast from ruining everything. Salmon En Mole Verde The salmon will probably be overcooked, but the pumpkin seed mole is great, and manages to add enough moisture to save it. Carne Asada A La Parrilla No matter how you ask for it, the ribeye is going to be medium if you’re lucky or well-done if you’ve drawn the short straw. It has great flavor, and the plantains and molcajete salsa that come with it are delicious. But if you’re looking for a tender steak, this isn’t it. Conejo En Chile Ajo There’s almost always some version of rabbit on the menu, and it’s always good. This preparation has a garlicky guajillos salsa and black beans. Chocolate Tamale This chocolate cake comes wrapped in a corn husk like a present, and when you unwrap it the smell of chocolate punches you in the face. It’s moist, not-too-sweet, and very good." - Adrian Kane

Location, food and atmosphere was amazing. This was our first trip to this place and brought our family of 6. The manager dropped by the table and brought us a sample of beef from the kitchen while we were snacking on chips. We got the fajitas for two and it was more than enough! Well done!

Spacious Mexican restaurant with a large bar, TVs to watch the game. Cash & credit card payments accepted. Full bar (wine, beer, cocktails). Reasonable selection of mid-range liquors to handle most needs. Tucked away in a small strip mall it would be easy to miss this place if you weren't looking for it, which I was. Upon finding it and reviewing the menu I was prepared for some average Mexican American food. All the typical dishes are there - chimichangas, burritos, enchiladas, etc. However there were a few things that merited a bump up on the overall rating. Service was quick and friendly. The owner or manager came over to check on me and we chatted a little bit. They weren't bothersome but I felt welcomed and appreciated. Basic salsa and chips are forgettable, but I asked for something spicier and that's where the interesting stuff started. My waitress brought out a small bowl of what looked like an overly-wet bean dip. But it was clearly not bean dip. There was a latent heat to it that hits not in the mouth so much as in the gut. Not enough to be unpleasant (at least for me), but enough to be noticeable. Curious. I asked the manager about it and he assured me they make their own. A mix of jalapenos and other chilis, onions, and garlic. But I'd love to watch them make it so I can see how they end up with the consistency and color of bean dip. Regardless, it was very enjoyable. At first I thought they didn't have tacos and that was a worrisome thing to me. However a closer review of the menu showed me they have a street taco dinner plate - three soft tacos with your choice of meat, plus rice and beans. The rice and beans are forgettable. But the tacos were very good. I opted for steak and it was very tender, flavorful, and plentiful. Dusted with diced onions and cilantro along with some lime pieces, it was delicious. I appreciate the little touches that move this place above average, and hope they keep up their good work both in making customers welcome as well as providing them some unusual but delicious options for their meals

I ate lunch here for the first time today. OMG! It was fantastic! The tortilla chips are served warm (which I love) and the salsa was fresh and had really good flavor with just enough heat! For lunch I ordered the chicken fajitas. They came to the table sizzling and were served with 3 warm tortillas and a generous plate of shredded lettuce, fresh guacamole, sour cream, pico, beans, and Spanish rice. The fajitas were absolutely delicious with grilled onions, peppers, and tomatoes. The menu was extensive with lots of choices in every category. The service was friendly, attentive, and helpful. I had previously always gone to another popular Mexican restaurant, but Sol de Mexico Bar & Grill is exceptional! It is located in the strip mall across the drive from Cracker Barrel. I will definitely be back very soon!👍😋

Javier was our waiter today. He was amazing. Poured my fiance beer for him multiple times too. The birria tacos were amazing and everything was priced so good.

We have a wonderful experience with the best service. My husband got the birria tacos and they were absolutely amazing. I had a shrimp chimichanga and it was also amazing! We'll definitely go back.

We had a great dinner at Sol De Mexico!! The place was recommended by the staff at our hotel which is nearby. Sol De Mexico did not disappoint! The salsa has a great flavor, warning- it's a bit spicy. The cheese dip has a great flavor too. Their chips are very thick, we loved them. Portions are large, the staff is friendly, and the place is clean. We had the enchiladas, and all were great! I don't usually get enchilada sauce and opt for cheese sauce instead. I forgot and it came with enchilada sauce. It was the best I've had. It, paired with the chicken, cheese, and beef in the enchiladas was soooo good! We also had a combo w/ a taco, enchilada, and a tamale. Again, all great! I highly recommend a visit and would return for sure.

I enjoyed being here for lunch with friends on Tuesday, I brought my hubby for lunch on Wednesday! Service both times was top-notch! Food was awesome! You know that feeling after having a meal where it's not eating because it's necessary; but, rather, a satisfying experience that you don't want it to be your last! The salsa and warm chips arrived as we were seated! Bot were so good you wanted more. Had the burrito supremo both times because I enjoyed it so much. Didn't get the name of our server on Tuesday, but Carmen served my hubby and me. Both were fantastic! We don't eat out very often. Often, food is not hot when served or service isn't good. Sol de Mexico do both excellently! Didn't have my phone for pic on Tuesday. I intended to take pics on Wednesday but I forgot. Next time will get pics.

Yelp
I've been trying Mexican joints all over town. This is my favorite. Great guac, food and margaritas! If you haven't been here, go now. Thank me later!

Yelp
Update; We ordered take out this time vs dining in and it was just as fabulous. Tacos de Birria platter never disappoints.

Yelp
Newly opened, Sol De Mexico is so worth a try! I'm already planning my second visit. My friend and I got seated in a booth (there are 4 top tables and larger family booths as well). Our waitress served us immediately with water and chips with salsa. It's my favorite kind, smooth and not too spicy. We ordered a fancy drink my friend saw on Facebook--and I'm glad we did. They were delicious as well as generously sized. I loved the fresh orange and lime garnish with a tajin rim. I ordered the steak fajitas. SO GOOD. They arrived sizzling, with a large plate of sides and toppings. 10/10 The dining room is large, and there is a small side room that would work well for a family party. There's also a bar area with TVs. At lunchtime, there was a mix of families and the work crowd. Check out the menu for lunch specials. The parking lot is ample, and the light at the intersection to get back onto Washington Center makes it easy.

Yelp
Anybody that's says this is place is good needs their head checked. Carne asada tacos had a lot of meat, but bland. The limes didn't even have flavor, that's crazy. Churros hard, filled with nothing and for 7 dollars, crazy work. Even the salsa was bad, green salsa bad 2 out of 10, red salsa horrible 0 out of 10 , chip salsa ok 6 out of 10 but still lacked flavor. Birra tacos were decent 7 out of 10 but somehow I didn't even get my consommé. Rice and beans sub par 4 out of 10. And for $50+. Would not recommend. If the rice and beans are bad and the salsa is bad in my opinion you can't be trusted. But that's just my opinion. Try it for yourself.

Yelp
This location used to be Kaysans for the longest time and then The Job Site for a hot minute. As many Mexican restaurants there are in FW, this area didn't have a go-to. It still has a bit of a sports bar vibe when you walk in and is a very open area with a bar area. The Manager was very attentive when we arrived and gave us a few recommendations. Service was attentive and the salsa had a nice kick. As you know, the Mexican options in FW have to be top notch or won't last. The menu was quite extensive and prices were right in line. I thought the red sauce on my burrito had just the right amount of heat....finally a local place that kicks up the heat without having to ask. The sauces for my wife's tacos also had some heat along with good flavor. I'm hoping Sol De Mexico does well and finds some regular traffic. We'll be back, just based on service and the other eye catching entrees

Yelp
New - had to try it. Does not disappoint. Texas Margarita was good, both amber/lager Dos Equis. Birra Tacos were delicious !

Yelp
I wish I had pictures but I didn't feel like the order was worthy of pictures as I carried out. I read the reviews and saw they had quesabirrias so I was hopeful that I had found a place nearby and not across town that had delicious quessabirrias since I'm a huge fan. My husband and I both had the same order of a quesabirria dinner. 4 "tacos", rice, beans, chips and salsa. The price was unjustifiable. It seemed as we got one small spoonful of rice and beans. The "tacos" were flat quesadilla style which made it hard to garnish with onion and cilantro. The consomé to dip was extremely salty which made the whole meal overly salty. Neither of us enjoyed the meal. The only reason they got the 2 stars from me is because the spice and taste from their salsas, best I've had in a while. I was hoping the food would represent the place I'm from (Mexico) but I was very disappointed.

Yelp
The service was good but most importantly, the birria tacos were soooo gooddd! I am a sucker for birria tacos and these were very flavorful. I would definitely come back next time and try something else different! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Hopefully, this place will last, unlike 5th Down and Jobsite. I really like this place and the location. Love the new look and colors. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Loved the margaritas! The margaritas were only $8 and very tasty! I thought a $8 Margarita would be weak, but these were strong! I could only handle 2 of them! The salsa was amazing! The salsa was thin and delicious, but unfortunately, the chips were thick and cold. I like hot, thin chips with my salsa. The bathroom could use a remodel. I do love that they had different things on the tvs. I'm definitely going back to try the seafood burrito!!!

Yelp
Fantastic new place. Staff was great. Attentive and pleasant. Food was very good. It's not a big departure from other local Mexican restaurants but it has some key advantages. Better salsa and tomatillo, large sports bar area and nice quiet separated dining area. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Fast service friendly staff and good food. Had the fajita burrito and it was so overstuffed needed to eat it with a fork.!

Yelp
Amazing meal, perhaps the best Mexican food I have had. LARGE portions. Service was very fast. Full Bar. Nice decor.

Yelp
Delicious birria - tender and juicy meat. Good chips and salsa, this was a delivery order and everything was hot on arrival!

Yelp
Everything was absolutely fantastic! What a great addition to the Mexican restaurant scene here in the Fort. We were pleasantly surprised. We went in expecting the typical Fort Mexican fare and found it to be much above average. Our kids all had the tacos and each independently raved they were the best they've had. The chips and salsa were fresh with the right amount of spice. I went with the recommended Tacos De Birria-- this is probably my favorite Mexican dish in town. Spicy and delicious. My wife had a fajita bowl and also enjoyed every bite. The service was quick, efficient and friendly. They've done a great job renovating the space: big, open, clean and fun. To top it off, the 5 of us (2 adults 3 kids) are for $60, including a beer. Great deal, high quality food. Can't wait to go back.

Sam L.

Yelp
The food had no flavor. The Al Pastor street tacos were bland. Wife had the burrito and the ground had no flavor either. Spoke to manager. Hopefully they will make some changes in the kitchen. Service was good. With the abundance of Mexican cuisine in Fort Wayne, we won't return here.

Chuck O.

Yelp
Basically it's the same as Cebollas with a different name. Be sure to check your bill to make sure it's correct. Plenty of seating and nice server. Good grill chicken.

David S.

Yelp
Tiniest little taco, when they brought it out I laughed a little ( inside myself though as I didn't want to be rude). Ordered guacamole and chips, must've been a half-cup. Margarita was super sour. I realize how I sound, so maybe I expected too much for the price. Maybe I need to not be a negative Nancy. So here's a positive - our server was a nice lady.

Yelp
New spot. Tasty food in large portions. Super friendly staff. Great drinks. Very clean. Our crew will definitely be going back.

Greg J.

Yelp
first time there. from the salsa to the Margarita to the meals everything was great Service good, food choices and flavors outstanding I have found if the salsa is good, the rest of the meal typically is good, and I wasn't disappointed Of the 5 meals we ordered for our party, each one was perfect, and the portions were substantial I'm going back again to try something else on the extensive menu, worth a visit

David M.

Yelp
Excellent food, great value. Nice people. Will stop again next time going through FT Wayne

Anna M.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Very clean inside and very accommodating when I wanted to change a few things about my order. Margaritas were good too!

Jim W.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! The place was fairly empty, but won't be for long. Highly recommend if you like great Mexican at affordable prices.

Amy S.

Yelp
Amazing food! Fantastic service! Best quesabirrias in town!! Great margaritas that actually have tequila in them! Will definitely be going back...A LOT!!!

Dennis S.

Yelp
Went there for my nieces wedding anniversary. There were 8 of us. The service was great. Our waitress even brought us samples of their De Birria marinated meat. It is delicious!!! We ordered the Quesabirria after tasting it. We will be ordering it again! Everyone loved their food. The Salsa was very good as were the chips. The Frozen Margaritas were very good! A pitcher is the way to go for only $17.40. I believe it is 52oz. Everyone with us decided that this is our new go to Mexican Restaurant!!
