19 Bay Area Spots Where You Can Find Crispy, Cheesy Quesabirria Tacos

"This new taqueria from the proprietors of Ann’s Sunshine Cafe next door has quickly become a neighborhood favorite for its fried fish tacos, handmade tortillas, and super-sized quesabirria — a massive version, more quesadilla than taco, that’s served cut up into thick wedges." - Luke Tsai

Google
Most underrated restaurant in Walnut Creek. Yummy, we had shrimp fajitas and fish tacos. Family always wants to go here.

Google
We had the cheese and beef enchilada combo and with a El Pastore taco on the side. The taco was my favorite part. I’ll come back.

Google
5 star experience all around. My first time in SF valley in a while. My cousin suggested this Mexican restaurant on Ventura. Never been here before. The place was packed on a Wednesday evening around 6:30. We had to wait 20mins for a table for 3. The place is going through an additional on the other side of the bar with an outdoor patio. I ordered their chicken asada burrito. My son had their shredded beef plate and my cousin had the green corn tamales and a fish taco. Amazing taste and quality. The place is very authentic and the food is good quality and and nice taste. The service was fast although the server was hesitant to recommend anything on the menu. Will be back.

Google
So good!! Service was wonderful and warm, each and every dish was flavorful and beautifully presented. Outside dining area well appointed and comfortable. We ordered lots of small plates, the quesabirria was excellent! Ceviche and sopes, also. Very reasonable. Would definitely go back!

Google
Salsa is good. Just wished they had homemade chips to go with it. Outdoor seating is perfect this time of day 12-1:30 PM cuz the sun hits at just the right angle. The beef birria is very good. The pastor taco is totally fabulous!!! I highly recommend either dish. They are working on a liquor license when I came mid November.

Google
I left a lighthearted comment on their Facebook post saying the tacos I got didn’t match the photo — “taco-catfished,” I joked. Instead of a polite response, they messaged me privately and told me to “Get a Job!!” (Yes, really — screenshot attached.) So just to recap: The food looked nothing like the promo photos. I got stale-tasting shells instead of the fresh-fried ones pictured. And when I mentioned it, they came at me in the DMs like it was personal. Absolutely wild behavior from a business. I’ll take my $ (and my dignity) elsewhere.

Google
Their super burrito was delicious. The orange salsa made it 🔥🔥. It was yummy. They weren’t shy with the meat. Will definitely return. Chips and salsa was good too.

Google
Had dinner to go of course. Order the following items. Chips and salsa. Birria tacos. And the quesabirria. Salsa was great. Had good flavor and it was chunky. Had a bit of a kick to it but not too much. The birria tacos was amazing. The tacos itself had great texture. They tasted like what you would expect good tacos to be. They were pretty meaty. Generous portions of meat into each taco. As for the consume (not pictured) had a really good kick. Nice spice and not overpowering. I was able to get a bit more meat within the consume. I would have wanted a bit more, but the portion of the consume was just enough for the three tacos. I did not have the quesabirria. My son had it and said it was pretty good. I know I’ll be coming back to try the other items on the menu.

Yelp
Small spot tucked away in pleasant hill with a few other restaurants. They have a large spacious patio out front that has tv,fans, and plenty of seating. I ordered several different tacos. Fish, carne asada, and birria. All were really great. The tortillas tasted homemade. The service was great with a very friendly staff. Definitely a great find.

Yelp
The salsa is so good and fresh. It was the best part of my whole experience. We only ordered 2 drinks, when the waitress left our table she went to the bar. I heard what sounded like a soda can open up. I turned around and see her pouring canned margaritas onto our cups filled with ice. She bought them to our table, we took a drink and they needed a lime or so we thought. An orange would've been better. Our food came out we ordered the crispy tacos they were okay. It came with rice and beans. The rice was okay but the beans were straight out of a can. I'd go back for the salsa but that's probably all.

Yelp
+ Outdoor Seating + Counter person/server was nice + Mimosa's - Ordered Take Out Chicken Enchilada Dinner-no flavors popped through out all including rice and beans. $17+

Yelp
Service was absolute trash, which is kinda okay but the tables were dirty, didn't bring out water or drinks till food was ready. Food was pretty bad, the chips were stale and terrible tasting. Honestly all of the food looked like they were old for lack of a better description.. Tacos El Patron honestly demolishes this place.

Yelp
Great breakfast options- love how this place is right next door to and ones by the same people as the sunshine cafe, so you can order from either one.

Yelp
Lunch at Sol Y Sol Y Luna Cocina Mexicana the quesabirria was AMAZING today! Full of meaty cheesy goodness and the broth had so much flavor. The shredded chicken burrito was juicy and filling. They had a special - grilled fish tacos. I was soooo excited because i LOVE grilled fish tacos. They were good but i think i like their crispy fish tacos better. Love the homemade corn tortillas. Always love our meals here!

Yelp
A hole in the wall Mexican place but def worth checking out! We came on a weeknight dinner and while there were a lot of takeout orders, there were very few dine-in guests. Food was fantastic, really good portion sizing and well-priced. The service was probably the best part though! Our server was really sweet and attentive, came to refill our water and chips and helped give us recommendations on the menu. Would def recommend to anyone in the area craving a good dinner to come to Sol y Luna!

Yelp
Best Mexican food in the East Bay. Hands down. Great service and unbelievable price.

Yelp
Always love coming here.. Love their Chile relleno burrito and vampiritos. Highly recommended

Yelp
Not bad, for a random place in Pleasant Hill. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would but I wouldn't choose the burrito again. I probably shoulda got the enchiladas (fav Mexican dish). Those looked great along with the Birria stew! The empanadas were a different touch as well. I'd def go back and get enchiladas
google avatar

Yelp
Typical Mexican restaurant, the food was fine and we liked that they had a nice outdoor area. The prices were reasonable. The server had no personality but overall an average kind of place.

Yelp
Delicious Mexican food with extra mile family style service and atmosphere!!! The pressed corn tortillas are perfect! First time and definitely returning

Yelp
We moved into the Poet's Corner area about five months ago. During our move, we were looking for a place near our home that we can walk to and check out the food. That was our first time eating at Sol Y Luna. The food was absolutely fresh and delicious. we tried the wet vegetarian burrito, and their pork chili Verde were absolutely wonderful. Their margarita was very tasty. The service was good and we've gone back several times since. Their outdoor seating is very nice especially in the summer when it is warmer but they do have outdoor heaters. They also have a happy hour! Terry

Yelp
The food here is EXCELLENT, very authentic! My husband is from Mexico and we have been searching high & low for a GREAT Mexican restaurant nearby and have been constantly disappointed in other local establishments. They also have a Happy Hour and a nice bar w/ very good service. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is due to an ongoing issue I've been experiencing w/ many of the Latino food places around...I thought we had dodged the problem until 1/2 way through my meal when another customer got up and went into the bathroom. THEN the problem showed itself...PLEASE STOP CLEANING WITH FABULOSO in the bathrooms or kitchens where people eat!! That smell is so strong, recognizable and OVERPOWERING! As soon as the huge gust of artificial flower scent hit my nose, all of the food immediately began to taste like cleaning products. We had to stop eating & take the rest to go. If they heed this advice, and we could enjoy our meal amongst the delicious aroma of homemade Mexican delicacies instead of the scent of public bathrooms (USE BLEACH), this would definitely be a 5 Star spot...until then, we'll only be ordering to go. And, one last suggestion...if you're gonna offer Mimosas you have to be sure & re-cork the champagne each time you pour a drink otherwise it goes flat...and w/ sparkling drinks, the bubbles are kinda the point. Pretty good overall though!

Yelp
This is our go to local Mexican restaurant. Our favorite is the Chorizo Tacos ... they also have a solid salsa selection and great tortillas. Customer service is good and if you want to eat there the covered patio is nice.

Yelp
If you want good flavorful Mexican food come check out this spot..it's a MUST TRY. Food was amazing and customer service was superb!! The restaurant has convenient parking space and it's very clean. I'm adding this restaurant to one of my favorite restaurants in the Bay Area.
google avatar

Yelp
With so many Mexican restaurants in the bay, they need to nail it. The al pastor (usually an incredibly flavorful meat) was bland, it was an unseasoned pork chop. It was not marinated, it was not slow cooked. The chorizo was way too salty, I ended up mixing it with the pastor to give that some flavor. The refried beans were watery and flavorless. It has been a long time since being at a restaurant where I stopped eating my meal because it was just not good at all. The wait staff was really sweet and did a great job. The ambiance was really nice and it had a great outdoor space. But the food was disappointing so we won't be back.
google avatar

Nasim E.

Yelp
Must have the Birria! Chile Relleno was flavorful but I wish there was more cheese in it! Very kind server. I will be back and you should give it a try!!!

Kathy W.

Yelp
It makes me sad to say the meal I had today was very poor. The wet burrito was cold as was the sauce and the meat was so tough as to not be edible. The flavor was bland and lacking in any appeal. I've eaten here before and it's never been this substandard

Yelp
Delayed Review! I have had the pleasure of eating the fish tacos before thank to my boss and a fabulous Taco Tuesday at the office. This go round was with the family. Me: the fish tacos (again) He: the steak fajitas The kid: crunchy steak tacos chips and salsa were plentiful. Lorenzo our server was hospitable and attentive. I am looking forward to going back and trying out a few more yummy items!

Yelp
Excellent food. The space is just ok but the drinks and service are above average. A hidden gem.

Yelp
I visited Sol Y Luna to try their birria tacos and birria quesedillas. Although I don't have much of a frame of reference, I did like what I had! I'm a big fan of dipping things into that consommé. I feel like the consommé goes great with everything. Between Birria Tacos and Quesedilla, I'll go with the quesedilla. The cheese adds a nice additional richness that I liked a lot. The double corn tortillas on the birria tacos was a bit dry unless you dip the tacos like a french dip in the consommé. My family tried the lengua (beef tougue) and it got high marks. Parking is pretty straightforward, and Sol Y Luna have a pretty good sized outdoor parklet for outdoor dining.

Selvana D.

Yelp
Soft tacos smelled like paint or some type of chemical and the meet overly chewy and gross

Yelp
This place is really good and gets your stuff ready pretty quickly . I pick up lunch here at least once A week. The Taco's are a nice size for the price! Reasonable priced stuff . Staff is away nice and music is perfect . They also have a covered patio area .

Yelp
A hidden gem in the Oak Park shopping mall! We got the shrimp lime plate, chicken tacos and chips and guacamole. Good flavors, but a little on the saltier side for my liking. We ordered take out and it was ready within 20 min. This place also has outdoor dining if you're interested. Overall, good experience and tasty food. Returning again today for Round 2!

Celia L.

Yelp
My husband and I met our friends here. It was all of our first visit, but it won't be our last. Excellent service and delicious food. We had fish tacos, fajitas, enchiladas, chili rellenos, and chicken taco salad. Very tasty and filling.

Yelp
Foods great Deserves the 4.5 star reviews Super friendly and accommodating First time and will definitely comeback

Yelp
We are regulars here, usually ordering once a week so the price we have paid is pretty constant. We like to say the food is consistently inconsistent, but not to the point where we would stop going. Sometimes, you get pickled onions with an order, or a bag or two of extra chips. Sometimes, your chip container will not be fully filled up. Sometimes, the chicken in the fajitas is dry and feels reheated. With all that being said, the inconsistencies were inconsistent. We continued to go because it was a good value and usually hit the mark. Sadly, our most recent take out cost us $7 more for the same items and the portions were definitely smaller. The meat, beans and rice were not filled as much as usual to the point where it was definitely noticeable. I get that the cost of everything is going up, and it's necessary in our area for workers to keep pace financially, but paying more for less is probably going to get us to explore the other Mexican restaurants in the area. The people there are nice and I hope this was just one of the inconsistent times and the next time we get value for the additional cost.

Yelp
I cannot say how great the food is here. This is my go to Mexican food spot in the area. Horchata is delicious I ordered some carne asada tacos they were delicious the asada was hot and fresh. I've had the pozole it was very good as well. I also ordered some chilaquiles they were the best I've ever had. This place is a must try if you've never been or if you haven't had good Hispanic cuisine before. Service is very polite and quick.

Yelp
Delicious! I really enjoyed the margarita - it was fresh and limey. Quesabirria was super flavorful. Friendly staff and fast service! Wet burrito had tons of sauce which I always appreciate too. The guac was the highlight for me, sooooo yummy!

Jake R.

Yelp
7/23/23 afternoon I decided to try their Mole Verde Pipian. Worst mistake ever!!! Inedible!!!!! EXTREMELY SALTY, bland, canned. Flavorless boiled chicken in it. Rice was ok, and all I able to eat along the chicken because I was so hungry, and did not want to wait for a different item. I haven't ever paid $25 for an inedible meal until today. NOT RECOMMENDED! NOR WILL BE BACK TO TRY ANYTHING ELSE AT THIS PLACE.
google avatar

Yelp
It's hard to find good Mexican food around PH...but, Sol y Luna is a must try :] we had their carne asada burrito and crispy tacos, which were great! crispy tacos really have a nice crunch to them along with good rice and beans. don't miss out on the burrito, tho! that was fire too!!
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
This used to be J.P. Tacos a few months back but now Sol y Luna Cocina. The menu is kind of similar with some new additions. Chips and guacamole were good, plenty of fresh chips with a zesty guac. The vampiritos 3 fried corn tortillas with beans, carne asada, grilled onions, cilantro and homemade salsa. They give so much carne asada but it was pretty salty. It reminds you of a mini tostada because you can't really fold the tortilla since it's fried. But everything else was good, next time I'd ask for a different meat. The service was really nice and food came out within 10 minutes. Hopefully this one stays.

Yelp
What a lovely addition to the neighborhood! We really enjoyed their selection and flavors. We ordered to go for dinner on 10/31/21. I really enjoyed the tacos. The al pastor was flavorful. This was my first time having birria and there were huge pieces of meat in the tacos and it was really good. Looking forward to trying more! I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of ceviche! Really generous amount of fish and tasty! We also ordered the carnitas super burrito which was also very good, really big helping. The staff was really helpful and nice. I'm looking forward to going back and trying more of their food.

Yelp
I've seen this place in passing. It's in a pretty good neighborhood for restaurants and has plenty of parking, so I thought I'd give it a try. I must say that overall I was less-than inspired. The food was decent; not bad, not great. Decent. The overall ambiance and the dining room, however, were a bit of a downer. The lighting was overly bright. The seating was sparse and uninviting. It was a bit chilly in the dining room also. There were supplies stored in the corner of the dining room, badly hidden behind a fake plant. There was a huge, out-of-service margarita machine sitting by the window to the patio... I could go on, but I guess the general sense is that this restaurant is designed primarily for takeout. There are soooo many good options for Tex-Mex food in the WC/PH/Concord area, that I see no point in patronizing this establishment again.

Usha T.

Yelp
Good wholesome food. Got cheese enchiladas. Fresh. Quick friendly service. Patio seating.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is very good the service is very accommodating the food comes out fast and very good I had the beef stew quesadilla very heavy good but heavy and had a beef stew taco very tasty wife had a 2 crispy chicken taco plate it was that nites special it came when rice and beans very tasty. I have say it again the service is excellent . Mexican food is heavy if you know what I mean lots of cheese meat it very good but on the heavy side so go hungry my friends

L P.

Yelp
We ordered tacos - a few chicken, a few steak, and a few pork. All of the meat was dry. The tacos only came with meat and chopped onion. Very disappointed!
google avatar

Sheila C.

Yelp
Other folks have given this restaurant 4 stars but I'm not sure why. First I was confused whether I should order at the counter or sit down outside and a waitress would service the table?? The entire restaurant is configured oddly and I didn't even realize they had indoor service as I walked in the door and ordered at the counter then asked if it was okay to sit outside. I will say the "waitress" was on her game. She handled the inside counter and the patio. I'm not sure if any customers were inside. At the counter I ordered a pablano burrito, a small guacamole and a sprite. The burrito was good but dry and I probably should not have ordered the guacamole because Hass avocados are not in season in Jan and the guac was bland. Overall I won't go back because the food just didn't wow me.
google avatar

Serianna B.

Yelp
Amazing food and quality service! We had the crispy tacos, quesadilla and wet burrito and they all were outstanding. We will definitely be back soon!

Sheryl S.

Yelp
Good breakfast and nice outside patio! The huevos rancheros were really good and the pancakes big and fluffy!

Yelp
This review is specially for our experience on 7/10/21. 2 other previous visits were better compared to this one. Order mistake - we asked for a chicken wet burrito and after a few bites, realized it was carne asada. The waitress immediately came to correct the mistake, didn't charge us for the wrong burrito, let us keep it and brought out a new burrito swiftly. Unfortunately, the meat quality of the carne asada was the issue. It was very crunchy (tendons) and tough. This was the first time ordering the ceviche and that was a good portion and tasted good. A little browning on the avocado but the portion enough for a meal (it's under appetizer).

Lorin B.

Yelp
I ordered the shrimp taco plate and was not disappointed. Two tacos came on street-taco style corn tortillas but were piled high with 3 to 4 perfectly cooked shrimp each, red cabbage, and pickled de gallo. The shrimp were a little spicy, the pico was fresh and bright, and overall the tacos were pretty messy to eat but so delicious you won't care. The plate came with rice, also well seasoned and delicious, and beans. I got mine with black beans, which were cooked perfectly but didn't seem salted or seasoned at all? I didn't mind since I was at home and could add a little salt- but that was surprising and a little weird. Overall it was a tasty plate and I'll definitely be back! (Photo was taken after I already started eating so only shows one taco, ha)

Yelp
If you don't know...... now you know!!!! A must visit if you enjoy excellent tasty food. Birria is my goto but just to make sure I tried multiple different things and it was all delicious I told my neighbor about the place and put my own money down that they would love it Best horchata ever

Eric N.

Yelp
love their chilaquiles! they even let me add chorizo on it! i'll definitely be going back

Yelp
Back out of retirement 2 kids & 3+ years later just so I can rave about Sol y Luna - our #1 fav Mexican restaurant in Pleasant Hill. My toddlers love the quesadilla, rice and beans & we are all huge fans of their grilled chicken. I always get the chicken taco salad with those delicious bites of grilled chicken. Their fish tacos are on point as well. Love their awesome outdoor space, friendly, fast service & authentic food. The only thing missing is a full bar for margaritas, but they have beer and mimosas so that works for us. Love this place!
google avatar

Mo S.

Yelp
Super good food and extremely friendly staff! This was such a great experience! My husband and I split the al pastor wet burrito and a couple tacos - carnitas and birria. The birria was the star of the meal with the amazing birria sauce! Amazing flavors! I really appreciated how friendly the servers were. It really makes a difference to have service with a smile and friendly conversation.
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
Visited the weekend before last with hubs and son. We had an excellent meal on the patio (frankly, I prefer the outdoor seating to the indoor). Service was prompt and courteous, and all the staff were friendly and welcoming. Son had a wet burrito; parents shared the fish taco plate and some birria tacos. The food was fresh, high quality and made with care. Palomas and margaritas are solid. Will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
The staff was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. I generally judge Mexican food based on the beans and rice. Theirs was ok.
