Solitaire Restaurant Has Shuttered in the Highlands - Eater Denver

"Solitaire Restaurant operated for three years in Highland, Denver. It opened in April 2015 and closed in 2018. The restaurant was known for its elevated dinners, served Tuesdays through Saturdays, within a nearly 5,000-square-foot space. The venue was composed of two adjoining old Denver houses with multiple brick-walled dining rooms and a sprawling patio. The restaurant received mixed reviews, including 1.5 stars from a Denver Post critic and a 'Best Chef of 2016' award from Westword." - Josie Sexton

Service as fantastic! Our waitress gave us a tour of the restaurant, its history and a explanation on where they get their ingredients. However, the food was a little disappointing. The slider was too fatty, the meat in the bolognese was salty but the noodle was delicious, the calamari was interesting as it was prepared/seasoned the way the eggplant Parmesan (our waitress did tell us calamari was prepared differently here), and the steak was also interesting as it had horseradish and mustard with it. It's "interesting" because we can't say we like it and we can't say we absolutely hate it either. It was new combinations we have not tasted before.

I went here with my girlfriend for our anniversary. I am so glad I picked this spot. I made a reservation and our table was immediately available. The staff did a great job taking care of us. They didn't just make sure "everything is ok" they truly wanted a special experience for us. Joe our waiter was very friendly and knew both the drink and food menu really well. The service here is so good and ambiance so nice it's not even comparable to another place in Denver/Boulder. The food was just as good and I would say a good value especially with the portions and quality. Thanks Solitare for making such a great, memorable night.

I don’t leave many reviews. It takes a special place for me to spend time on one of these to let everyone else know what I think of it. Let me say, I could not recommend a better tasting restaurant, dining/drinking atmosphere and bar environment. 6 gold stars!!! But, let’s not prostitute this place and over crowd it so I need to make 2 week out reservations and/or get a bunch of lame people to start going here and doucheing it up. No offense, but it is a real gem and it’s in everyones best interest to keep it that way. Starting to regret this review already. Oh, and it has a little old school Denver history too.

Fabulous patio with fun cocktails, friendly staff and gorgeous seasonal diverse menu!

Truly an exceptional experience. This renovated house use to be The Highlands before a married couple bought it and renovated it to become Solitaire. Mark the owner chef use to work with Wolfgang Puck til he moved to Denver. The location is Highland Gardens on 32nd and Perry. Great bar, outdoor seating with some garden landscaping and divided rooms for restaurant service. Our waiter Tom was terrific. This is a small plate restaurant with five pages of wine and interesting cocktails. Three of us ordered 5 courses which were all shared. Two cocktails each with a bill of $182 + $40 tip. Not bad at all. It was a deliciously delightful experience.

We attended a party at Solitaire July 29th. it had been a couple of years since our last visit there - the renovations that Mark and Andrea accomplished are absolutely 1st class. The bar area is extremely comfortable without being small and affords the opportunity to stroll in and out to the patio area. The staff was fantastic in terms of speed of service and friendliness! What can you say about the food? A LOT! We had multiple dishes served during the party (including the best pork belly slider I've EVER had) and every single item brought out was raved on by the partiers (I missed the pizza somehow - not sure how that happened!) The desserts were unbelievable as well - a palate-pleasing assortment of items that were so tasty! We had such a great experience we went back on Sunday AM for the brunch - amazing croissants, Eggs Benedict and Biscuits/Gravy and maybe the BEST Bloody Mary I've ever had! Amazing food, atmosphere and friends in my favorite setting in all of Colorado - well done Mark!

Google
Solitaire is a must see - everything was great! We had awesome hospitality, the drink menu was unique, the dinner and dessert was trendy and so good. The chef personally modified a dish to accommodate the food allergy. We loved the spot and we will be back for sure.

Want to escape the fun but everyday feel of the Highlands? Go to Solitaire. You'll feel like you're in a high-end, relaxed restaurant in Europe at a very affordable price. The cocktails were perfectly mixed and the food was incredible. I highly recommend the Calamari Steak Parmigiana and the Seared Salmon - seriously amazing meals. Go on Wednesdays for "all night happy hour" and be sure to sit on the lovely back patio when the weather allows.

Yelp
Incredible food. This spot is so cute, it's an old house converted into a restaurant. Very quaint and a perfect brunch spot. They have a huge drink menu, with a great variety. I recommend the maple latte! I could tell our server was a bit overwhelmed, she had a lot of tables. Service was a bit slow, but understandable. Otherwise everything was great and I can't wait to come back.

Yelp
We've had Sassafras bookmarked for a long while. We've attempted to come once before and the wait was crazy. Today, we came for brunch and in between busy times. FTW! Our "45 minute" wait wasn't nearly that long but as we waited, we enjoyed a brunch cocktail by their cozy fire. Not a bad way to wait. Because we were a smaller party of two, we were sat parallel to the big picture windows in the front. Perfect! We ordered fried green tomatoes to start and as I added some sugar to my Irish coffee, the small but meaningful details in the sugar dish made me smile. THIS is one of many reasons Sassafras is amazing. Check out the pic. No toxins added. The batter on the green tomatoes was perfect - golden, well seasoned and very very tasty. The dip was well seasoned also. What a great pairing. I loved my main dish as did he. I could have easily changed my mind three times and him too. There are so many scrumptious brunch options to choose from. We both left empty plates and said the same: incredibly well seasoned, no need to add salt or pepper to anything; well cooked and the flavors were popping. I usually prefer my dish to his when we share tastes but today, I was happy with him as much as mine. Yum. Other cool touches? Colorful napkins, colorful dishes and the best staff. Our waitstaff was a lovely woman: attentive, funny and really helpful. Man, I can't wait to return. So many dishes left to enjoy!

Yelp
We came here for breakfast and I loved it. The restaurant is in an old converted house. It is so nice inside. It has so much charm. We started out with the beignets and I had the seasonal drink which was the apple cider margarita. The beignets were really big. There are three of them and they are served with jam. They were very good. I decided to eat a little healthy and got the fruit and yogurt parfait. It came with strawberries green apple and pineapple for the fruit and granola and honey. It was very good. Plenty of fruit for me. We were seated downstairs and I went upstairs to use the bathroom. Bathroom is really cute and the rest of the upstairs has more seating and an outdoor patio. Service was great. I will be back for sure. So many good things on the menu!

Yelp
This place is really cute. We were able to be seated right away as a party of 3, and our server came right over to start assisting. I had the catfish and grits, everything was so well seasoned and tasty. I tried a piece of the crab benny and it was really good. My friend ordered the shrimp and grits but could only eat a few bites. They add some sort of vinegar that completely throws the taste off. Instead of taking it off our check, we got $4 off. The plain grits, yes, shrimp & grits, no!

Yelp
The staff there were so friendly which made us feel welcome. The food and service were okay though. I ended up ordering the fried green tomatoes and a small gumbo. The fried green tomatoes didn't seem hot hot and wondered if it sat there for a short time before serving. The remoulade sauce was delicious, I could eat that on everything. The gumbo was hot and tasty with plenty of chicken and sausage; great for a light lunch. The Sassafras Salad looked good and had a lot of greens and quality toppings. The Chicken Fried Steak was plentiful. The chicken fried egg was cooked perfectly on the Bison Hash dish. The corn bread was cold. I personally didn't like the cloth napkins as they didn't smell very clean and wasn't very absorbent. My mom asked for more gravy for her chicken fried steak (CFS) but received breakfast sausage gravy, which they charge $2 for. We didn't have a problem paying for it, but didn't think we had to specify CFS gravy because no one ordered any other dish that had white gravy. The air was a little stale since they open all the doors to accommodate those who sat on the patio. I got a little warm since the gumbo had a good kick to it. I do appreciate when restaurants have water pitchers/carafe for the table. My family are big water drinkers. The salt and pepper shakers are so cute and different on each table. Loved they take reservations on weekdays. The atmosphere was a home environment which gave it a uniqueness and made it a perfect neighborhood eatery.

Yelp
The restaurant was in an old house which was cool! The only complaint I had was that it was a little toasty, granted it was also in the middle of summer. I got the crab cake benedicts and it was super good and flavorful! The meal also comes with a couple of shrimps that come with a southern Cajun flavor that I loved! I would definitely come here again!

Yelp
Sat at the bar for brunch with Julie as our server/bartender. Churro beignets, charming setting, great interaction with manager at host station, shrimp and grits. The food was good but would come back for the personable, attentive service from Julie.

Yelp
Finally! I've found my noble crust (my go to brunch place back home) and my husband and I are fans. This is a cute little restaurant that was made from an old house and it has that cozy feel. I luckily got to sit outside on a private porch for a nice brunch with my husband. We split the banana nut bread griddle and I thought the flavor was amazing and it paired well with the maple latte I got. I got their chicken and waffles with a side a grits. I am a Florida girl so I know what good grits are. Not the best I've had but good and creamy. The chicken and waffles were perfection! I am a huge fan and my husband agreed. His pork breakfast sandwich was equally good. Overall, we really loved this place and we will frequent it.

Yelp
Sassafras is located in an old house whose eccentricity matches its varied menu. In addition to exploring all that the house has to offer, they have a beautiful garden out back. Their cocktail offerings are very interesting, and they also offer several refreshing mocktails for those abstaining. To eat, I had biscuits and gravy. They let me choose 2 types of gravy, so I went with duck fat and sausage. Both were good, but the sausage was my favorite. My only complaint was that the gravy wasn't hot enough. The biscuits were not dry at all, and were easy to eat. The service was good. I'd love to go back and try some of their other entrees. Pro tip: this place tends to get super busy on Sundays, and they don't take reservations on the weekends. I recommend coming on a Saturday so you miss the after church crowd.

Yelp
This place is an ideal spot to bring friends. Interior is very cozy and food is delicious. Very fair pricing for the portions as well. Cinnamon beignets have just the right amount of sweetness and was not too doughy. Also quite big portion. Gator bites were fried really well and the two sauces provide it compliment it well. Recommend it if you've never had gator! Pigs in a Blanket are huge portions! Sausages are wrapped in pancakes. The maple mixes well with the sausage making a flavorful taste every bite. Bison hash has a consistency of mashed potatoes and the cornbread is cooked perfectly. Fried chicken eggs have a very light and crispy crust with the yolk still runny. Portion may seem small but it's a very hardy meal. Breakfast burrito was also not bad. Wish it had more green chili!

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Service: 4/5 On a weekend, the spot is quite busy so there will likely be a wait if you are trying to come for brunch. While service was good and the staff very kind and helpful, the food was just OK. A friend and I requested eggs to be fried eggs and over medium but instead we got over easy eggs. The jalapeño cornbread I found to be dry and lacking in flavor. A friend got sweet potato hash and it was a confusing flavor palette. Our best items were probably the beignets which were nice and soft with a yummy berry compote on the side and also the breakfast sausages which you can taste the homemade qualities in them. Overall just an OK spot for food.

Yelp
I first went here a little over a year ago while visiting and accidentally went again last week while visiting, not remembering I had been in the past. Not a problem though, this place is amazing! Adorable vibe in an old converted house with seating all over. We made a last minute reservation on a Thursday AM and got a table without an issue. The menu is large and all super delicious. The meals have a southern twist on classic breakfast favorites. They also have a coffee drink and breakfast cocktail list. I got the Chicken Pimento Biscuit and my friend got the Crabcake Benny. Both were incredible and I would get either one again. I plan to come back and try more off the menu. This is one of my all-time favorite breakfast spots!

Yelp
OK, the Sassafras Mary, although Green was verryyyyy tasty with a nice kick. Highlights were the Griddled Banana Nut Bread and Shrimp and Grits. The chicken fried steak was interesting. In a good way. I love greens, but there was a hint of sweetness to them, so it took away from the dish a little for me

Yelp
Brunch is my least favorite meal to enjoy dining out because it's always so hectic and it doesn't seem worth it to pay $20 for eggs, but I was surprised with how much I enjoyed Sassafras. I was expecting the worst when I came on a Sunday at 10AM, especially considering it's right next to the Highland farmers market, however we only had to wait 30 minutes for a table, and we were able to enjoy coffee/mimosas outside while we waited. The service was fast and attentive, our waitress was so sweet and never rushed us even as the service got more busy. Food came out really fast, especially the beignets and fried green tomatoes we got as starters. I really enjoyed my green tomato beignet, it's not too heavy and the eggs were poached perfectly. The jalapeno cornbread on the side was moist and just sweet enough. I tried a bite of my partner's chicken fried steak, the steak was a bit thicker and chewier than others I've had but honestly with all the sides and gravy it is still a very delicious bite. I loved the interior and patio area of those restaurant, it really reminded me of some of the restaurants we've been to in Nashville where it feels like you're at someone's home. It's warm and welcoming, and it never gets too loud (one of the many reasons I despise brunch). I would definitely bring more friends here in the future, we all left stuffed and it was nice to walk around the farmers market after.

Yelp
My partner, and I were looking for a breakfast/brunch spot, and stumbled upon this hidden gem! We tried to reserve a table for two but unfortunately, the host told us that they are all booked. We asked for suggestions on nearby places, and he was very knowledgeable and helped us out. As we walked out the door and proceeded to walk to a nearby restaurant, he quickly came out and said "Wait! I think I can arrange something for you both." My partner, and I were pleasantly surprised, and thanked him for being so kind! We were celebrating our anniversary that morning as well! I wish I got his first name, he created a great positive impact on the rest of our day! We both ordered the chai lattes, and they were warm and sweet, a great start to a chilly morning. They brought out complementary beignets because we were celebrating our anniversary and they were amazing! They came out hot, fresh, and we savored every bite! I ordered the fried green tomatoes eggs Benedict, (added bacon), with jalapeño cornbread. Unfortunately, they were out of green tomatoes so they substituted regular tomatoes instead. I didn't mind! My meal was still amazing! My partner ordered their famous burrito and it was so good I couldn't even get a picture! The restaurant felt so homey! They had an upstairs, downstairs, and outdoor seating. I believe it was a home, and they turned it into a restaurant, but I'm not sure. Nonetheless, the staff was incredible and you should definitely make reservations to come and enjoy a meal here!

Yelp
Oh my word if I could give this place 6 stars, I would! The quality of the food was amazing and the presentation is outstanding! I can see why the line is crazy during the weekend because everything was crazy good! My friends enjoyed their beverages and food as well. Would love to try their coffee next time!

Yelp
Brunch review again. BUT, bar experience. My wife always hedged on this place, and didn't even know they had a bar, so know that they do and it is fun. Less polite and louder. Otherwise, it is a nostalgic place with great New Orleans food. They have an IPA for $6. Score. Actually, they have multiple beers for $6, so that is a plus. Phyllis and Kat are the bomb. Phyllis handles the coffee drinks, Kat handles the peeps. I got the poutine and the roast beef was amazing. They have housemade hot sauce on the bar or table so that is covered. I was not impressed with my first poutine months ago, but they have added PIMENTO, so now it is awesome (including pics of both). Wife had the wedge salad and it was solid, but I don't eat salads on weekends or Fridays. Be aware that you won't be able to watch sports here, but you won't care. I have had the breakfast mac and it is incredible, and the breakfast Po Boys aren't slouches. Now that we have sat at the back bar, my wife is sold. That means I hope that you go, but don't take our bar seats. Definitely recommend and see you there (but not at the bar). You won't get this joke, but I hope the drunk guy at the bar whose birthday was on December 25th figured out the comeback to the girl ordering a French 75. He was very angry. Thougt it was allof, and not realizing Denver has a whole cool bar named on that drink. My vote was the Double Dutch 11. Or the Non-Neutral Swiss. Or the Creed Crete. Or the Porch-ugal Pirate. I could on and on. But, at the end of the day, you should go there for the excellent service of Kat and Phyllis. Definitely recommend and see you there.
google avatar

Kayla P.

Yelp
Very interesting place! The mimosa was decent. My eggs Benedict was okay. I wasn't expecting it to be breaded, but this is a New Orleans styled restaurant. The prices of food were a bit too high in my opinion for the portion you get.
google avatar

Libby S.

Yelp
I went to Sassafras for brunch while I was in Denver, and unfortunately, the experience could have been better. Our waitress was very inattentive -- it took a long time for her to come over and greet us, and even longer to take our drink order. I had the Nashville hot chicken mac & cheese, which was just okay, nothing special. My friend ordered the breakfast Po'boy and mentioned that it could use more bacon. Overall, I wasn't too impressed and probably wouldn't go back, at least not for brunch.
google avatar

JJ P.

Yelp
Good. They try hard. Some of the food is great. Other dishes (the catfish) are ones where you just wanna pat them on the back and say "you really tried hard. It'll be better next time". I'd go back happily. It's good. I'd just dial back my expectations from what I heard by word of mouth. Excellent generous service. It excels because of the comparable surroundings.

Kerri A.

Yelp
I highly recommend this cute little gem nestled inside two old houses. They have a very unique menu for reasonable prices. The fried green tomatoes Benedict was filling and delicious and the jalapeño cornbread was the perfect side. I enjoyed the Sassafras Bloody Mary although it was a little too peppery towards the end for my palette. Give this place a try. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Jacob B.

Yelp
Sassafras is an amazing place for breakfast and brunch! It occupies an older home which gives the restaurant a super charming and unique atmosphere. The service was great, as our server was very diligent and friendly. I love the wide variety of non-traditional New Orleans breakfast/brunch items on their menu. All the dishes I have tried have been delicious! Definitely one of the best breakfast/brunch spots in Denver!
google avatar

Cindy R.

Yelp
The cutest brunch and lunch spot in Denver! Denver's has so many good eats all competing with each other. The uniqueness of this spot is a soul food inspired menu. The red beans and rice was on the hotter side accompanied with a jalapeño cornbread and we added a poached egg. The blackened chicken Mac was delicious and hearty with bits of blue cheese and paired well. The granola bowl was light and fluffy, very fulfilling. The nut and berry latte was flavorful. The service was good and no complaints there. The house is very homey and you get a southern feeling when you walk in. Over all it was very good. Would come here again.

Yelp
Such a neat property and restaurant! Parking on the street, but easy in the AM. The food is sensational! My companion is gluten free and found several things that were awesome. I arrived early and ordered hot tea and had such a beautiful teapot arrive with a delectable brew. I was able to order the GF grilled banana bread as a breakfast appetizer just in time for my friend to arrive and see her eyes light up. My red beans and rice with jalapeño cornbread was a large portion and very well seasoned, just the right spicy and super tasty. I took home a doggy bag and enjoyed more for lunch! I WILL BE back!

michael b.

Yelp
I had eggs and bacon served lukewarm, mushy potatoes, My friend had macaroni and chicken that was pretty tasteless, beautiful place though
google avatar

Yelp
Ambiance and layout: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Food: 3.5/5 The building itself is very nice. The layout reminds me of an old-fashioned house. The tables inside are pretty secluded from each other. There's also outside seating in a fence-in area. Casual music added to the ambiance. The servers were very friendly and personable. It was moderately busy but not too loud. The food was unfortunately the low point as it wasn't anything special. The jalapeño cornbread had an off flavor. The potato casserole was ok but nothing special. There was a nice potion of fruit, though.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Ok this place blew me away. Started off with a snickerdoodle latte which wasn't too sweet & just perfect. The churro beignet was nice & fluffy. The bison hash was so good and whoever thought of a chicken fried egg, genius. It didn't look like a lot when it came out on the plate but I could barely finish it even though it was so delicious. We shared the beef stroganoff mac & cheese as a table and it was so creamy & a nice spin on just regular mac & cheese. My sister in law got a po' boy which was MASSIVE like the size of her whole head lol. We looooved everything here, can't recommend it enough! Plus the service was on point too! The interior was really interesting & there were cute little trinkets everywhere.

Rou R.

Yelp
Very chill place. Great ambiance. Service has always been solid, not great. The food can be rich in flavor or bland. It's hit or miss but much better when it's slow. I hate the cloth napkins. They're like wiping your face with drapes. Theres zero absorbency or anything that constitutes a teal napkin.

Ellie J.

Yelp
Awesome drink choices, kind servers, good for kids and families. Amazing biscuits and a nice atmosphere. Everything we ate/drank was great Clean bathroom with changing table :)
google avatar

Allen T.

Yelp
It took a little bit to get seated but after getting seated things were great. I ordered the bison mash with cornbread. Cornbread was amazing and the hash was also great. It was topped with two eggs when I cut and do the two eggs the yolk drizzled onto the hash and the cornbread. Very very delicious. Ultimately, I did feel that the dish was a little smaller and as such knocked off a star. This restaurant is also located. It seems in historic district of town inside an old house or building.

Jackie H.

Yelp
I'm visiting from out of town and am so glad I stopped by! The staff was warm and welcoming, and the food was fantastic. Although there was a 40-minute wait for Saturday brunch, it was worth it. Brandi, the host, provided a delicious beignet and recommended the bison and fried eggs--both were amazing! My server, Maria, was attentive and even offered to make up for my not enjoying the green juice (a bit too spicy for me). Highly recommend this spot!

Denise B.

Yelp
Charming ambience and food was delicious. Our server was delightful. Sitting out on the patio in October was extra nice.

Yelp
Here I tell the tale of both pros and cons. From walk in to sit down, the hospitality could be felt. The hostess was very friendly and provided us information on a nearby table almost ready to be seated. Once we sat, my friend and I agreed it felt like the best seat in the house: a cozy table tucked in the corner with a grand view of the lovely decorations of the room. The atmosphere was high. The table's features: parrot salt & pepper shakers and patterned fabrics used as napkins was a great way to set the time of the restaurant's unique vibe. As for the food, I was content. My recent caffeinated go-to is a simple cappuccino. Upon appearance Sassafras's version was served in a big cup with a fluffy whipped top. As I sipped, I was surprised as it really didn't have flavor. If anything it tasted like a watered down cup of coffee. I did ask for cinnamon to add some flavor, which our server happily provided. I ended up going with the Green Tomato Benedict which was packed with flavor, eggs cooked to perfection, and loved the hearty side of jalapeño cornbread. I must say I was disappointed about the green tomatoes being fried as this wasn't stated on the menu. As I was finishing up my meal I felt a little uncomfortable which I usually can thank fried food for. Ultimately, my one specific recommendation would be a more clear menu description, especially if frying is involved. Thankful for another restaurant to test out in CO!

Yelp
Meh. Met with some friends here for brunch, decided to try the breakfast Mac n cheese based on previous reviews and was completely underwhelmed. There was no flavor and just a bunch of ingredients tossed on a plate. We did get an app of beignets and they were also meh, huge, doughy. Really wish the group had chosen a different spot. Only bright side was the staff are super friendly even if service is slow.
google avatar

Olivia K.

Yelp
This is the cutest little breakfast place in one of my favorite neighborhoods in denver! The staff is very friendly but we've had to wait at our table for a while for even water so it can definitely get busy. The deviled eggs are an absolute must.
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
I love this spot for breakfast and brunch. Have yet to try their lunch / dinner but it's in my list. Its an old house transformed into a restaurant which makes it feel very cozy. The staff is great and the menu has something for everybody. Got the beignets for breakfast and they are my favorite. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
google avatar

Devon T.

Yelp
Holy smokes. Terrible service. I think the hostess is high. Our server didn't great us for over 5 min. 25 minutes later we still don't have our drinks (coffee and a mimosa). This is insane. It's slow on a Monday. The food and drinks were very good and decent prices but not sure I would go back unless I have 90 minutes for brunch.

Yelp
We went to Sassafras as our last meal in Denver and it did not disappoint. My partner's love of chicken fried steak runs deep and when I saw they did theirs with ribeye Cal and duck fat gravy I knew we had to go. We were seated promptly and our server Dan was as wonderful. We also had the pleasure of meeting the owners Michael and Julia and they were so sweet. We decided to go big so we could take leftovers to the airport. We started with fried oysters, deviled eggs and churro beignets. My partner is from the south and I've spend a lot of time their so our standards are high for southern food and Chef Julia definitely delivered. Then for our mains I had the pimento chicken biscuit and my partner, of course, had the chicken fried steak. I don't okie recommend this to anyone if you like fantastic food, friendly faces and a cozy environment.

Yelp
Cute house in the middle of a quant neighborhood. We were greeted by the sweetest and very genuine host. We got seated right away in their upstairs area. The host gave us a little history of the house and a tour. Loved him. Our server was amazing, very personable and on it. I ordered the shrimp and grits. I'm telling you they were the biggest most flavorful shrimp I've had since living in denver the past 11 years! The grits were so creamy and my Bloody Mary was SPICY! I got the one with ghost pepper. It's doable if you like spice. We got there around 10 am on Saturday, when we were leaving there was about a 44 min wait. Get there early I say!

Kyleigh S.

Yelp
Sassafras is absolutely outstanding. The menu is so intentionally crafted, right down to the house Bloody Mary mixes that are so unique and delicious. The pickle shots, with house brined pickle juice, are better than any dirty martini I've ever had. The decor and vibe is immaculate. Above all, the staff is truly amazing, helpful, and friendly. The owners, Michael and Julia, were so kind and welcoming! Love to see owners that do the work hand and hand with their staff. Cannot recommend this place enough!!

Yelp
Really nice, relaxed, setting in a building with a long history of housing excellent restaurants. Service was friendly and prompt, and we really appreciated the fact that they accept reservations on weekday mornings. The food was good, but not outstanding. My crab cake Benedict seemed overly heavy on breading in the crab cakes, to the detriment of finding the crab, and my partner's blueberry pancakes were unembellished, served with a meager amount of syrup. Others at the table were felt the food was tasty but not memorable. Good stop for breakfast/brunch if you're in the area.

Yelp
Amazing Breakfast! I came here yesterday (Friday) and they were extremely busy. The environment is super cozy and homey. I ordered the churro beignets, country breakfast (over easy eggs, potato casserole, sausage, and jalapeño cornbread), and a snickerdoodle latte. The jalapeño cornbread and potato casserole was *chef's kiss*. The sausage also tasted homemade. The snickerdoodle latte came out with a pumpkin spice art (pumpkin) on top of the foam (it's the little details!!) Would definitely recommend if you're ever in Denver but expect a wait because the food is amazing and everyone wants to try it!

Yelp
My friend has a gluten allergy, so she got the gluten free roast beef breakfast. She loved everything about it and said the flavor was wonderful, but could not stop gushing about the collard greens- she said they took her back, especially with the little ham chunks. I was torn between all the Benedict options, but ended up going with the crab cake on the recommendation of our server. So glad I did- it was wonderful. Great balance of flavors with the old bay, the hollandaise sauce was not too sweet or sour, but nice and creamy, and I discovered a new love- poached eggs. The snickerdoodle latte was awesome too- not overly sweet, and loved the little cinnamon art on the top. The restaurant is in a house in the highlands, so parking can be a pain, but if you look around the neighborhood you can usually find something. The bathroom was gorgeously decorated- you know a restaurant pays attention to the details when they do a nice job in the bathroom.

Yelp
A seriously cute little spot that's a converted old house (apparently 2 houses based on other reviews). Stopped in for a late lunch the other day and initially the hostess said there'd be a wait, but then a table opened up so she walked us upstairs. Our table was a little wobbly but they quickly shimmed it up for us. I was planning on looking more towards breakfast, but then I ended up pivoting and had to decide between the gumbo and red beans and rice - I opted for the latter. The rice and beans were delicious - terrific seasoning and blend of flavors. Ate every bite. It came with a slice of cornbread which didn't quite do it for me - the outside was a little crispy (which is obviously fine) but had kind of a....pan flavor? Like oil? butter? Something that I didn't love the flavor of. Gave it to my husband. He ordered the chicken po-boy and seemed to enjoy it as well - he said the bread was really good. Bathroom down the hall was very cute - obviously you can tell this was a house by the old features, and they kept it looking like a cute classic bathroom. Definitely a great spot (the restaurant, not the bathroom) to grab a nice brunch or lunch.

Yelp
Fun interesting menu for southern cuisine. The churro beignets were light and not too sweet. The shrimp and grits were good but the shrimp was a bit overcooked. They have fun latte, coffee options and the Hazel nut latte was sweet and indulgent. Friendly wait staff and outdoor seating helped with decreasing the wait on a Saturday morning.

Yelp
Sassafras continues its standing as top three brunch places in Denver for me. I was really sad to hear that the other locations have shut down! So sad! I used to frequent the one off Colfax! This location is in an actual house and it is so freaking cute. They usually have a wait so get there early if you want to eat immediately, lol. We started out with the churro beignets. I wasn't super impressed by them, they weren't as fluffy as the other ones! Flavor was still yummy though! I ordered my usual Breakfast Mac and it was just as delicious as I remembered. I think they've added a couple ingredients but it could just be that it's been so long since I've had it! It's the perfect mac 'n cheese to begin with. It's creamy and cheesy and the pasta is cooked al dente. Then add in the sausage, bacon, grit croutons, and an egg and I am in brunch bliss. Service was lovely and we got all we needed. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Parking in small streets around. Such a cute house restaurant. Ambiance 5/5. This is a Southern food brunch spot. Got the bison cake with fried egg 4/5. The bison cake was delicious! 5/5 but the fried eggs on top were salty. I ended up removing the fried part and just eating the egg. The jalapeño cornbread 5/5. Tried the truffle Mac & cheese 4/5 with egg on top. Delicious Mac and cheese but does not taste enough like truffle. I would definitely come here again to try some other items.

Yelp
Nice great Comfort food. Great if you're looking for a quick snack. But nothing stellar and not a Michelin resto. Ambiance was nice, casual, with good lively vibe. The place makes you smile.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Pretty evident by our clear plates! The hospitality we received was more than welcoming and attentive! Would definitely come back when we are back in town!
