I was hoping to be able to experience NYC deli in Davis, but alas no. My family ordered a round of "The Stanley" hot pastrami sandwiches. The pastrami was fairly tasteless and the rye was not flavorful. My husband commented that Trader Joe's corn rye would have been a step up with regard to the bread. The sandwiches were pricey for what you received ($12.44/ sandwich) and to achieve a traditional Reuben sandwich, you needed to pay an additional $1.99 for the Swiss cheese and $1.33 for sauerkraut. I ordered "The Terri" which was an albacore tuna melt that was toasted black and the tuna was laden with mayonnaise with little to no seasoning. I should also mention that your sandwich comes with a pickle spear and that's it... no cole slaw or even potato salad! This is no delicatessen.
When I travel to the Bay area and return to Davis, I never miss an opportunity to visit Saul's Restaurant & Delicatessen in Berkeley with a large cooler to bring back some of the best pastrami and corned beef my family has ever had on the West Coast. They also sell terrific smoked fish, rye bread and pickles. If you have a hankering for deli and want to take the drive to the East Bay, Saul's is the place to go! Perhaps the folks at Solomon's could take some cues from Saul's.
