Som Tam Thai Stall Opens in Union Market With Noodles and Papaya Salad - Eater DC

"The latest new stall to appear inside Union Market warms up visitors in the dead of winter with Northeastern Thai curry soups and fiery papaya salads. Som Tam opened this morning in the Northeast food hall, giving owner Alex McCoy (Lucky Buns, Alfie’s) an Isaan place again. A chalkboard menu describes orders of pounded salads — heavy on green papaya, fish sauce, lime, and chiles — and khao soi made with egg noodles ($10-$15). Thai natives Lekki Limvatana and Satang Ruangsangwanata oversee the new stall, which is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The pair was most recently cooking at the Fat Nomads Supper Club. McCoy says spice levels run high, because that’s “the way it’s supposed to be made,” and the chefs will hold back upon request. "But the idea is we are making it the right way, and if you don’t like that, then maybe it’s not for you," he says. The last piece missing from the stall is ice-cold beer to help beat the heat, but McCoy says he’s close to obtaining a liquor license, so Thai beers like Tiger brand are coming soon. McCoy has hosted late-night noodle pop-ups at Lucky Buns in Adams Morgan, and Som Tam marks his first major comeback to the Southeast Asian cuisine since his popular pop-up Alfie’s closed in Park View in 2016. For his window-facing setup near La Jambe, lined with wicker chairs and dangling woven lanterns, "we are using things you don’t usually find in Thai restaurants" stateside, he says. Fragrant cardamom pods and Indian curry powder help build bowls. Even bottles of Golden Mountain distilled vinegar get imported from Thailand. Delicacies like whelks (sea snails) and salted crab augment a heaping “jungle” papaya salad. McCoy, who travels to Thailand every year, says the proper way to enjoy salted crab is to pick it up and suck meat out of the hard shells. He eventually plans to to prepare more lessons for uninitiated diners as part of a five-seat tasting menu with limited reservations. "That is something really lost at a lot of places — here is the food, with no explanation," he says. While he says it’s common in Thailand for individual stalls to be dedicated to the art of just noodles or salads, Som Tam is supposed to showcase a strong cross section. "They really dive into the nuances of each dish," he says. "We want to show people differences in the regional Thai cuisines." Som Tom’s add-ins section of salted duck eggs, salted crab, canned mackerel, and fried pork skins honor Thai stalls that are dedicated to snacks. All of those ingredients can be thrown into any dish, or served solo. McCoy hopes diners will be able to identify food from different regions in the same way people spot the differences between styles of Americans barbecue." - Tierney Plumb

Looking at these reviews sheesh but guess what it's always good to know for yourself. Placed a small order to go and although they didn't take cash the gentleman accepted and scanned a payment for me. This was my first time trying the dish and don't recall the name. It was very flavorful and the fish sauce was strong but evenly displaced throughout the dish. Try for yourself I didn't have a bad experience and would order it again. Update: Tried again and again and again and have never been able to order the dish again. They had a sign that said sold out everyday for weeks and then it vanished. When I kindly inquired if the dish was still available the heavy set woman responded very unprofessional and nasty. I see now why the other reviews were posted! Wonder where the kind gentleman went as the lady is a definite business crusher!

I ordered the Kapow chicken with sticky Rice, it was heavy white pepper flavor and lacking in the spice and Kaprow basil I expect from the dish.

Som Tam Review: Good but Not Great Thai Food (4/5) Located in Union Market, Som Tam offers good but not great Thai cuisine. The pad Thai with shrimp, tom yum soup, and grilled beef with purple sticky rice are standout dishes. While the food is decent, the prices feel a bit high for the quality. Overall, it's a solid choice for Thai food in the area.

I don’t leave reviews, ever, because I am too lazy to leave them, even if the food was outstanding. However, i noticed that Som Tam has a really low rating, and it definitely deserves a higher rating. I experienced great service from a kind man, and the food came out quickly. I did end up going to Union Market early during the weekday, so it wasn’t crowded at all. The food was good!!! I’ve eaten thai food everywhere (including thailand) and they get the pad thai right. It has good flavor, good spice, and they don’t skimp out on the protein, unlike many of the places I have ordered pad thai from. I can’t speak for their other food, but I can say this place doesn’t deserve 3 stars by any means. I’m sorry for those who have experienced bad service, but this is solid thai food that’ll satisfy your cravings.

Honestly some of the best tofu pad Thai I've had in DC. I don't go often, but it's been consistently excellent when I am there. Pricey, but so is everything in DC these days. Also love the Thai ice tea. I've not had anything else on the menu, so I can't speak to any other dishes!

The service at this restaurant was so close to abysmal that it overshadowed what should’ve been a pretty solid meal. I walked up to the counter to read the menu, and waited for the two employees to pause what seemed like an intense conversation so that I could order. Something like “we’ll be right with you” would’ve been perfectly acceptable if they needed more time, but since eye contact was out of the question, I interjected with a “hi!” One of the two employees whipped her head around and sternly shouted “ma’am, you need to wait.” They continued talking, and when that same employee decided that she was ready to engage, I asked two completely benign questions about the larb which elicited further ire and confusion from her. I paid for my food, and ate it at the counter. The tofu larb was tasty, and the portion was good enough. Five minutes into my meal, the same employee flashed me an overly enthusiastic smile and asked me if the food was good. I responded with “yeah, thank you” and instead of feeling like she’d turned a corner, I spent the rest of my meal wondering if she’d spat in my food.

The food is very tasty. The wait and service is bad. When I was ordering my dish, Khao Soi, the menu offered tofu, chicken, or $2 extra for shrimp. I wanted it with chicken but they said they were out of chicken. Stuck between tofu and shrimp, I got shrimp. My friend ordered after me. She got their chicken dish. They had no issue in making the chicken dish. How can they make a chicken dish if they are supposedly out of chicken for Khao Soi? And no, it didn’t look like the meal was premade with shrimp/chicken/tofu. They combined ingredients from scratch. Not sure if they do this for Khao Soi to up-charge their clients. Additionally, it took over 20 minutes to get my food. However, the food is VERY tasty.

Yelp
I ordered the Northern Curry Noodles with chicken. The flavor was very good and moderately spicy. I could have done without the raw red onions. I enjoyed the texture of the noodles and the crunchy topping, too. You order at the counter in Union Market. It takes about 10 -15 mins for them to prepare the food. The customer service was lacking a bit in terms of friendliness, but that's okay. I would come back again to try more menu options. It's always nice to sit outside at Union Market in the picnic table area.

Yelp
$41 dollars spent for pure disappointment. $41 dollars for TWO entrees--Pad Thai with chicken and Kapow Shrimp. My partner stated that the Pad Thai was watery and lacked overall flavor. The noodles were close to dissolving in the container and the chicken pieces were bland. My Kapow Shrimp was...well, for someone who loves flavorful spice, this was inedible. Not pleasant. All I could taste was pure pepper in an uncomfortable way. The purple rice was hard, and the cabbage pieces were just...there. The worst part was that I had to force myself to eat as much as I could because I spent money on it, and I had a concert to get to and knew I wouldn't have anything for a while--to top it off the parking outside of Union was shutting down at 5:00 PM so we were being forced to leave the premise too. Not worth the $41.

Yelp
There are lots of places to choose from in union market! Although I liked Som Tam and will go back, there were a few things I wasn't a fan of... The staff wasn't overly friendly. There was no line and I had to stand there for some time before someone would look at me. I need a receipt, but when I was checking out they walked away so I had to read the prompts to get my receipt which made for just a weird interaction. The food was good! I got the Ka-pow with chicken which came with purple rice and cabbage. The chicken dish was spicy which I liked. It came with cabbage and purple rice, which was too sticky and hard to mix with the chicken. They did have lots of options for protein - shrimp and tofu included - and the menu had vegan and GF options. Overall a good flavor, but the rice and service could have been better. Although a 3/5, I could be persuaded to go back for that spicy chicken!

Yelp
The Kao Soi may not be available or the restaurant could be closed preparing dishes, so definitely have a back-up plan especially on the weekdays I can see why this place only gets 3.7 stars with fresh authentic food served with a sour dose of stand-offish service. I visited Union Market twice during my lunch break from Chinatown specifically to try the Kao Sao and failed miserably! Skip the weekdays, only go on the weekends to Som Tam, as it may not be open or full menu isn't available. The website states the restaurant is open Mon - Sun from 11am - 8pm - this isn't true. The 1st time I went on a Tuesday around 11:30am and the owner/cook informed me the restaurant was closed as they were busy making dishes and told me to come on Thurs. So a few weeks later, I came on a Thurs a quarter of 12, and the same owner/cook abrasively let me know the restaurant isn't open until 12pm. I went back 15 min later, and the Kao Soi wasn't available! The cook was going to make it later that afternoon. While I was shocked and disappointed (I wasn't going to leave empty-handed after 2 visits!), I relented and tried the Kapow. The best time to go on the weekends from Fri-Sun after 12pm when the full menu is available. The Kapow has a heap of crispy, tender cubed tofu in a chili sauce and green beans. It was bursting with flavor and the heat/spiciness wasn't overpowering. There wasn't a morsel or trace of tofu left! I wasn't a fan of the clumpy purple rice and would have preferred regular sticky rice. The cold slices of lettuce didn't do anything for me. When I picked up the food, the cook gave me a nice smile, but didn't say anything. I don't expect great service and truly appreciate the labor of love for cooking a fresh meal, but after 2 failed attempts to try the signature Kao Soi dish - I'm throwing in the towel!

Yelp
This place really went down hill. The staple I'd come here for was the khao soi. It was bearable but not like it used to be. It was completely soupy. The consistency between the two of our was different. The chicken in some parts were overcooked and it had zero spice. I asked for it extra spicy and they said they don't make it any spicier than it already comes. From that comment alone I knew I shouldn't eat here. Bearable but for the price it wasn't that good and they should just add more noodles instead of half the bowl being these crunchy pieces.

Yelp
A review in "bullet" points: - Fast & delicious - great team - Union Market must have Stop reading this review and just order because I promise you all it takes is to smell this spot and you can already tell it's a deal. 4/5 because I wish they had a little extra side, considering the labor I understand!

Yelp
I will start by saying the young guy at the counter was very polite and understanding. I only had veggie spring rolls. They taste unique. like potato korma or something. unique texture unique taste just don't expect a normal spring roll. I rate the spring roll 0/10 for my tastes but I don't think the spot sucks that bad just go in more informed than me

Yelp
Food markets are so much fun. Exploration to the max! Alright so this place would have received 4/5 stars but one of the employees probably the owner was rude! It was giving racist. I sat there for about 5/7 mins waiting to order. While he was acting as if he didn't see me there waiting. Finally another employee came up to the counter and took my order. Very polite. Other guy had the screw face. I watched a African American couple sit at the other end of the stand waiting to order as well . He saw them too and did nothing , acting like he was doing everything else. They waited for quite sometime too until the other employee took their order. Not cool. I still ordered the chicken and shrimp dumplings (fried) they were really good. Lol it's unfortunate bc one of the two employees energy was very unwelcoming. Wish them the best

Yelp
Got the chicken wings and they were very mediocre. There wasn't any flavor besides the sweet chili that was provided with the wings. The pro is that the wings were cooked perfectly. They were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Unfortunately, I wouldn't get again.
google avatar

Yelp
Som Tam was a quick stop. I received my chicken dumplings in 5 mins. The service was quick. The gentleman was friendly. The dumplings were cooked perfectly. That crunch leads into a soft mixture of chicken and vegetables. I me a good small dish. I also ordered a Thai Iced Coffee which was perfect for the hot weather. I suggest you stop by and try this place out!

Yelp
Tried a different place this time I went to Union market and didn't disappoint. It has a small dedicated seating area to include at the counter which is nice since real estate seems hard to come by at union market at times. I rarely like tofu dishes but something about it called to me. It is defined as medium spicy but... it was pretty spicy so beware of that! Loved the flavor, a little on salty and spicy side but it went perfect with the string beans, cabbage, and black sticky rice. Portion was just enough but most would say it's pricy for what you get. I personally enjoyed the Thai Iced Tea because it wasn't sweet and made with oat milk. But if you're looking for the super sweet condensed milk Thai Tea ... you will be disappointed. Overall I enjoyed this spot. Would come back to try some other dishes.

Yelp
Som Tam is one of the best restaurants in Union Market, and likely all of Noma as well. If I'm eating an entree at Union Market, it will be Som Tam's Pad Thai 9/10 times because that's how much I enjoy their version of this dish. Many restaurants fail to deliver a good Pad Thai because there is simply not enough sauce to noodle ratio. I'm not asking that the noodles be wet, but I do want the tang and sweetness that only the sauce can deliver. Som Tam delivers this level of flavor in their Pad Thai. The Pad Thai is decently priced at $15 (Union Market prices are slightly higher than the average restaurant, which is understandable) and the portion is typically enough for there to be leftovers. I was very hungry this time so ate all of it but usually there's enough to savor for later. The dish comes with peanut topping on the side, bean sprouts, chili powder, and a lime wedge. All of these additions make the dish even better than it would have previously been. I appreciate that the bean sprouts are on the side because their freshness and crispness of preserved. The dish itself is contains the perfect ratios of protein to noodle to vegetables. The dish has both red and green onions, which I believe provide the perfect contrast, along with egg and chicken. There is always a lot of chicken, something which surprised me initially and that I appreciate a lot. The egg is not insubstantial either, and the noodles themselves taste great along with their various accompaniments. This is my favorite Pad Thai in DC, and is one of the few dishes I crave in the DMV more generally. .

Yelp
I got the crispy wings with the Thai herbs. The guy at the front (let's call him 'employee A') was extremely rude. I had asked his colleague (let's call him 'employee B') if I could move my chair because there was extremely Limited space for my food. He said yes of course. After eating for a while, employee A asked me very rudely to move to the left. He also seemed to have an attitude with me from the beginning. For example, when he found out I was paying with card, he said "$15 minimum" even though it didn't say that is the case in a sign anywhere. The wings weren't even that good, they were just like regular old bay wings.
google avatar

Pg E.

Yelp
This is arguably the worst Thai spot I've been to. I was overcharged, the food was mediocre at best, the service wasn't great, and the cleanliness was so disappointing. Unfortunately, as someone who doesn't eat pork for religious and health reasons, I was given pork spring rolls over the veggie option I ordered. I am paying for the one bite I took on the way home... in a "not so friendly" way. Try at your own risk ...

Yelp
It's really difficult to narrow a decision between what delicious goodies you want amongst so many competing aromas in the Union Market. I am systematically going to every restaurant in here, and on this particular occasion, it just happened to be Som Tam! The lady at the register (not sure if owner or employee) greeted us with such a warm smile, was very helpful and patient with our indecisiveness (sooo many tempting options). We decided to go with the Tofu Pad Thai and it was sooooo friggin gooooood!! The flavor profile was spot on with much more of a peanut flavor than the norm, all the ingredients tasted authentic and fresh. The only problem with it wasn't the fault of the business, but it was eating it to go. The noodles got a little soggy, so I would recommend eating it immediately!! Another thing I would've modify is the level of spice, it needed more of a kick than what was offered. I'm definitely coming here again for maybe a quick snack or a full blown meal with lots of sides!! -ODL Follow my IG: @AOEAT

Yelp
Som Tam is a small booth near the side entrance doors, and if you enter quickly, more than likely you'll rush right past them due to the seating taking a lot of the room for their area. We ordered from the small bites menu, and got the Lemongrass Wings, Black Rice, and Spring Rolls. The wings were very crispy and hot, you could taste the spices that they marinate the wings in, but the oil that was left on the wings was really unbearable for me. I'm not sure if the oil was too hot, or old, but the wings tasted like it. The black rice was new to me, it's not sweet, or savory, just a completely neutral flavor and cooked tot he stinky consistency I'm used to with Mango Sticky Rice. The spring rolls were ok, a simple, cheap mix of carrots, and iceberg lettuce, the shrimp portion is a little skimpy, not actually a whole shrimp but cut in half to give the appearance of it being whole. Customer service was nice, and we had quick service, but I wouldn't seek out the food again.

Yelp
This place is so bad. I usually only give a 1 star when there is a serious problem and it's usually never about the food. But it was so hard to eat the food from here that we threw it away. Don't come here.
google avatar

Olivia I.

Yelp
While I was looking forward to trying out this union market staple, the food was unfortunately very mediocre, bordering on bad. I ordered their tiger cry and the beef was chewy to the point of being inedible. It was more grizzle than edible meat. The black sticky rice did in fact stick together but not because it was moist or sticky in the normal way sticky rice is but because it was so dried out, the grains congealed together. It was ultimately very crunchy. The best part of the box was the raw red cabbage
google avatar

Grover B.

Yelp
Som Tom not good for the tum tum. Inedible. I ordered yom tom (lemon grass soup) - it was greasy and so expensive almost $10 for a small container

Nathan S.

Yelp
Almost not consumable food. All bad food is too expensive and this was very bad. What did they put on the fried chicken wings? Had to be tiny rocks. I will stop here.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
Thai Tea: 5/5 I ordered two Thai teas here, and they were absolutely delicious. I was actually tempted to order a third one! The cup size for their Thai tea is a little on the smaller size, perhaps around half the size of a boba tea cup. That was the only downside since I absolutely love Thai tea. The Thai tea costs about $3. It's an absolute must on a hot day and if you're craving something sweet. I would ask for "less ice" though if you want more tea. The Thai tea itself had a strong Thai tea taste, which made it taste delicious. It was sweet as well, but I thought it was the perfect amount of sweetness since I just wanted to sip a little bit of it at a time. I recommend trying their Thai tea!
google avatar

Yelp
Located in the buzzing Union Market, Som Tam is the only Thai vendor in the marketplace. Having had great Thai food elsewhere in DC and NoVa, Som Tam doesn't fare as well. I ordered the tofu pad thai and asked for it to be spicy. At $16, my expectations are pretty high, but it just didn't deliver. The noodles were overly cooked and became too soft and the portion was small. Now that I think of it, maybe most of Union Market is overpriced and under delivers in flavor. Still hopeful I'll find a favorite food spot in the market. I did like that Som Tam added chili powder on the side of my container so I can mix in as much as I needed to spice up the entree. If you ask for a cup of water, they'll give you a cup and must find the water dispenser near the back bathrooms.
google avatar

Annie R.

Yelp
You can find this place inside of the Union market, closer to the front. It's super cute and has a Thai street food look. I ordered the tofu pad tai with a spicy level 3.5 out of 5. I should've just went for the 5 lol I took it home To go so it probably would've tasted better fresh. But even so, it was still good warmed up. The flavor was there and the portion was good. I Compare every pad Thai to my favorite so it's hard to reach (as I have been continuously in search of the best pad Thai). But I'll def get it again.
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
Great little Thai place in Union Market. The pad thai and garden rolls were both fresh and delicious and came out super quickly. Prices were def a little high and I wish they made the pad Thai in a larger and smaller size option because we would have gotten a few little things if we could have gotten a smaller size of the noodles.
google avatar

Peter B.

Yelp
Ginger chicken lacked flavor of any sort. Larb was "deconstructed", meaning the minced vegetable goodness that makes larb larb was a pile of weird cabbage next to some rock hard rice. I have been eating Thai food since I moved to DC and this is the worst I have encountered. It is even worse than Ruan Thai in Clarendon. Try harder.
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
Stopped by recently during a busy Saturday rush. Tried the Pad Thai and the fresh shrimp spring roles. The sauce they serve with the spring roles (spicy & green) was amazing, I would put it on anything. Pad Thai was extra saucy, which I prefer. Service is friendly and fast, this is exactly the type of stall I have in mind for Union Market, swing by grab some food and keep moving to the next amazing culinary experience. We will be back for sure.
google avatar

Mischa J.

Yelp
Not a bad place, but it took just over 30 minutes for me to get my food. I know it was busy, but for this kind of place, it should not take this long to get food, in my opinion! With that being said, I found the food to be very tasty. I had the crispy herb wings, black sticky rice, and Thai iced tea. Everything I had was good. The staff seemed nice. They could have a better Thai beer selection. All in all, I think this place is worth a try if you happen to be in the area.

Yelp
I ordered the Khao Soi with beef during my first experience at Som Tam at Union Market and was pretty disappointed with the dish. While the meat was cooked well and the portion size was nice, the dish lacked any flavor. Additionally, the noodles were lukewarm. My food was ready within 3 minutes of ordering which lead me to believe it was not freshly prepared. Perhaps other dishes are better but I will be trying other restaurant options next time I'm at Union Market.

Yelp
Was really looking forward to Som Tam given how much I've loved Alex's khao soi in the past...finally visited this past weekend and left a little underwhelmed. First - it's super slow. Line moves at a snail's pace and they don't seem bothered by it. Finally placed my order and had to ask for a buzzer. By the time we got our food, our friend's were finished with their indigo bowls. Anyway, for the food. We tried the beef khao soi and the pork noodles. Khao soi broth was a little mild (needed more flavor), but the noodles and toppings were good. The beef was ok but not a standout here - I wish it was the short rib he's used in the past...I didn't get to try much of the pork noodles - took the wrong bite and hit a wall of spice, and ended up taking the rest home (my partner finished it). I did try the pork in it and the meatballs which were fine. Overall, decent first trip, will need to come back to try it again and also the som tam.

Yelp
Was tempted by the khao man gai. It's one of my favorite dishes, so obviously had to try it. The rice wasn't super gingery, and the whole dish was a bit too salty. The garlic oil was fine, but wish it came with a funkier sauce too. The Thai tea was pretty good, but a bit pricey.

Yelp
Subpar pad thai and terrible service. Very small amount of food for $15. Not sure why this has high ratings

Yelp
A friend and I tried food from three different vendors in Union Market recently. Som Tam was the first stall we got food from. The single dish we ate from Som Tam wasn't only the best bite of food we had at Union Market, it might have been the best bite of food I had all weekend! We got the Som Tam Pla Ra (Isaan style green papaya salad, tomatoes, long beans, chiles, fermented fish sauce, Thai eggplant, fermented shrimp, lime, and palm caramel), and I LOVED IT. I loved the acid (so much lime) and all the fermented flavors from the fish sauce and fermented shrimp. It was bright and light and so tasty and kind of addictive. I wanted more. And just on the basis of this dish, I want to eat here again and try everything else on their menu. DELICIOUS.

Yelp
So glad this place opened up! The owners are super friendly and talked to us about the food. We got the beef curry noodle soup, jungle salad, and the stir fry noodles. They were all amazing. The jungle salad is verrrry spicy (beware) and they have sea snails which are actually very delicious. The curry soup flavor was hearty and the beef was super tender. The stir fry noodles was the star. The pork meatballs had a ton of flavor and the whole dish was perfection. My friend got the iced Thai coffee and we had sips of it - it's dangerously delicious. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
Som Tam is okay. It's fine. But nothing to write home about. I've tried a few dishes from here including Tiger Cry and pad Thai with tofu. Like a lot of Union Market, the prices are a bit high given the amount of food you receive. Expect food here to be enough for one serving for an average appetite. Why three stars? Last time I was here, they added Trader Joe's almond milk to the Thai tea concentrate. Let's just say, it didn't mix well and I wouldn't recommend!

Yelp
Got the pad Thai and the papaya salad with crab paste (I don't remember the exact name but it was not the straight up papaya salad). I think the issue I had was it all tasted very very sweet. Sweeter than most pad thais I have had. Couldn't taste too much spice, though I understand making a dish milder for the audience you serve. Yeah mainly the dishes tasted very sweet. I ordered the pad Thai with chicken and there were only 5 small pieces. I understand making a quality dish with a smaller serving given that most Americans eat way too much. But there was a mountain of sweet noodles though, so the proportions were off to me.

Yelp
A wonderful addition to Union Market hall! I had their Tom Pa-- and WOW, love it!! Very fresh and flavorful-- lime, spicy, and crunchy. Definitely will come back to try other dishes here. Their Thai Iced Tea is good too!! They have this cute tiki-themed bar that you can sit and watch them prepare your meal. My next lunch from them will be SomTam Thai and Thai iced coffee. Glad to have you all at UM!!

Yelp
I ordered Pad Thai and green papaya salad. Sadly, the noodles came undercooked with pink pieces of chicken them. I cooked everything once again in a wok, and it tasted very good- the seasoning was subtle and not too salty. The green papaya salad was appropriately spicy and had a nice amount of peanuts in them. I liked how everything tasted, but undercooked chicken is not acceptable.

Yelp
This place looked authentic and promising but was a real let down. The som tam salad was good, i'd probably order it spicier, as the default spice was low, but portion was small for the price tag. I'll chalk that up to Union Market rents. My partner's pad thai was mediocre at best. But the worst part of the meal was the entire sized rice noodle soup with tom-yum base. It was REALLY watery - and if anyone actually tasted it before they served it I think they would have adjusted it. $17 (I added shrimp) and it was just a watery mess. I'm not sure the left us any any reason to return.

Yelp
This place is so amazing! True authentic Thai food! If you are not into spicy food I don't recommend this salad. However everything they have is a real party in your mouth.

Yelp
Fast, yummy option. I was wandering the market trying to decide what I wanted. The staff were very friendly and greeted me as I was looking at the menu. The staff at the register pointed out the daily specials, but I ended up going with the Khao Soi with braised beef - start with the basics right? I loved it - chewy yummy noodles, soft braised beef and that soup base is definitely not for the faint-hearted. I would get it again and look forward to trying a dry noodle dish next time. The Thai iced coffee was okay and the lychee black tea was too sweet for my taste. The lady at the register said the order will be ready in 10 minutes. I took a walk and the order was ready in less than ten minutes and was wrapped up in a stapled-down paper bag with my name on the outside. Inside there were napkins, chopsticks and a spoon along with my order. The soup was in a separate container than the noodles and toppings. Happy to have this yummy Thai option in Union market!

Yelp
Som Tam is a Thai stand in Union Market closest to the middle doors as you walk into the market. It's a small stand with bar seating that fits six people. The menu is divided into noodle and salads. For $15, I ordered the Khao Soi Gai. It came in a soup with noodles, spices, and a delicious chicken leg. The server recommended I add all the condiments to it- lime, purple onion, pickled cabbage, and chili sauce. It was delicious and well spiced!

Yelp
Very pumped to have Thai food at Union Market. The space has a really cool buildout with wicker hanging lights, a wood bar, and countertop seating. I think it's one of the better and more on brand spaces in Union Market. I had a great Khao Soi (noodle soup dish) with beef. They also have a few papaya and cucumber salads that looked fantastic. The chefs make everything fresh right in front of you, including a giant mortar and pestle to mesh the flavors in papaya salads. Feels very authentic and I can't wait to go back. Prices are on the higher side but the quality matches it.

Yelp
I really liked my first experience here. I ordered the Khao Soi Neuea and was really happy with it. The dish is a steamy pile of noodles topped with beef and pork rinds. It was sweet, and not too spicy. The beef was soft, although a little chewy and fatty in places. I would go there more often if it was a little less expensive. Sure, everything is made with love and care, but the portion sizes all seemed pretty small. To feel a little hungry after a $16 fast casual lunch is disappointing. Service was slow, and they weren't busy, although I think they do make the dishes on demand.

Yelp
Try out! It's so pleasing to discover a new place that turns out is beyond your expectations during this unprecedented time, COVID-19. We have a bowl of salad and beef curry noodles. Both dishes seem to exhibit very authentic flavors and I love the depth and variety of textures in them. Excellent.

Yelp
Ordered the kra pow kai dao to go and it was amazing. It traveled well and was still warm when I brought it back home. The egg yolk was also still runny! The food is a bit pricey but they give you a LOT of rice and meat, and the flavors taste very similar if not identical to the kra pow I had in Thailand. I have a fairly high spice tolerance so the dish wasn't spicy for me but if you do bite into the peppers, be prepared for a kick. Definitely looking forward to ordering from here again and glad to see the business is still doing well!

Yelp
REALLY BAD. I've gone twice and both times what I got in no way even matched the descriptions given. The " fried herb wings " with lemon grass and Chilies were literally deep fried restaurant depo wings with zero salt and a small side of may ploy.

Yelp
Som Tam's electronic payment system allowed me to express my disappointment with my last meal here. The account manager responded promptly and graciously with a coupon that I used soon thereafter for their chicken pad Thai, which was exceptionally tasty and ample. Thanks and good job, Som Tam.

Yelp
We had takeout from here. Started with an awesome interaction with someone via text (check their IG for the phone number to text your order in directly to them!) We got the: SOMTAM Thai (papaya salad) Khao Soi Chicken (curry chicken noodles) Kapow Kai DaO (ground pork with rice) Our favorite was the Khao Soi, but all three dishes were amazing!!! Definitely order from here--it was AWESOME! Thank you Som Tam!
