The Best Milkshakes in Philly

"Avid fans of old-fashioned milkshakes should make Somerset Splits a destination. Whether visiting its stand at Spruce Harbor or its original storefront in Port Richmond, you can choose from a classic, malted, Reese’s, or cereal (with rotating flavors) milkshake." - George Banks-Weston

The Ultimate Philly Ice Cream Shops

"Head to Port Richmond’s Somerset Splits for extravagant, indulgent sundaes that will make any summer night feel special. Try the Nutter Butter, made with Marshmallow Fluff, Nutter Butter cookies, and peanut butter swirl ice cream, or the Positive Vibration, with pineapple sauce, coconut, bananas, whipped cream, and a cherry. Keep an eye out for riffs on Push Pops and Choco Tacos, too. Ice cream also comes by the scoop and in milkshakes, but where’s the fun in that?" - Ernest Owens, Eater Staff

Wow, so much fun packed into a little cup. I've been waiting a couple years to visit this place, and I never should have waited it so good. I got the strawberry shortcake which was an awesome ice cream with chunks of pound cake and covered in an amazing strawberry sauce. We also got the daily special which was marshmallow fluff which they toasted right in front of us and was incredibly delicious.

Somerset splits is a beautiful ice-cream parlour with great staff and ice-cream options. Plus is the Star Wars collection! We had a Sunday - it was amazing quantity was good too. Nice date spot for summers! Recommended

Google
This place has a lot of fun sundae concoctions. I ended up ordering the Dunakroo sundae. It was deluxe! They nailed the flavors and texture, and the portions are generous. My family really enjoyed theirs as well. In a city where you pay a lot only to get little in return, this place is a welcome breadth of fresh air. Hell yeah Somerset Splits!

Google
After a very long day I needed some ice cream with all the chunks!!!! Got to the window and said listen I don't know what is on your menu but I need chocolate with lots of chunks to chew. She chuckled and told me all my options with a friendly smile. The ice cream was rich and the oreos, peanuts, chips ahoy, and drizzles hit the spot! All of right in the world again. 😄 Somerset Splits is out here changing lives. 😋

Google
Awesome neighborhood ice cream parlor! They did a popup at Martha where I happen to work and it was awesome! I decided to bring my family in this past Monday and everything was great! We had a traditional banana split that was to die for! And an additional scoop of peanut butter swirl ice cream! Jay was awesome too! Super friendly guy!!!!

Google
A low key neighborhood spot consistently putting out the best and most inventive sundaes in the city. Also some seriously tasty cereal shakes. The owners are also super nice too and it really makes this place feel really connected to the community!

First experience was fun. Great customer service cozy spot and great quality ice cream. I definitely see myself there again sometime soon.

Ice cream is mid af. Better off having blue bunny from Walmart.

Yelp
Groovy spot. Conscientious service. I love their creative signature sundae's. Their butter crunch topping is my favorite and the ice cream is yum. Cute spot- local owner

Yelp
I love it here! And they are open again inside! Yay! Stopped in last night with my boyfriend for some great ice cream sundaes since I was having a day. It was the perfect late dinner for me! I enjoyed vanilla ice cream with caramel, Oreos and butter crisps (I think that's what they are called). My boyfriend had a caramel sundae. We were very happy! The service is always great and friendly! The owners are hands on and one of them is usually always there.

Yelp
If are looking for dessert after dinner at Tacconelli pizza, you need to check out this corner ice cream spot. You can scan the QR code for the menu by the window. They accept cash , card, and Venmo. It's a take out only. Your order will be brought out to you. When I was waiting in line, I could smell the pizza from Tacconelli which is only a couple doors away. Wait can be a while especially if the person in front of you ordered several milkshakes. Dee, the owner is super friendly and welcoming. We got peanut butter milkshake and it was very good.

Yelp
Somerset Splits has amazing ice cream, delicious flavors, creative mixtures, and sees my dog outside and comes to say hi! Also follow them on social media - their memes are wonderful.

Yelp
My favorite local ice cream shop. They serve Bassets ice cream in a bunch of different ways. The sundaes are massive and only $8. I got the Dunkaroos sundae with chocolate chip ice cream and it was very sugary but very good. I always have eyes bigger than my stomach and I need to learn I can't eat a sundae by myself. Anyway, the dunkaroo sundae had teddy grahams, funfetti icing, a mountain of whipped cream and obviously ice cream! I can't wait to go back but I have to be careful - still trying to work off the pandemic pounds lol. Also, if you are vegan, they usually have options, like 2 flavors and a ton of toppings!!!

Yelp
Nice little neighborhood ice cream parlor in the Port Richmond section of Philly! They have all the traditional ice cream parlor classic sundaes, milk shakes & banana splits, along with specialty sundaes like the Stock's Strawberry Shortcake that are unique to the area!

Yelp
This place is a gem! If there is one thing every person wishes they had in their neighborhood, it's an ice scream shop. Port Richmond is blessed to have Somerset Spits dishing out great flavors and fun styles of ice cream. They have different styles of floats, sundaes, cereal milkshakes, and even have mochi. This mom and pop shop also gets a lot of love because of the owner and staff. They are so friendly, they want to make an impact in the neighborhood, and they want to hear from their patrons. They will make anything you ask if they have the flavors and tools to do so. One of my favorite things to get from here is a collaboration with Stocks Bakery (if you are around Fishtown/old Richmond/Port Richmond - this is a must stop by the way), but it's a strawberry sundae with Stock pound cake. It's just phenomenal. The inside of the shop is great too, plenty of opp's for instagram photos with your ice cream, great music playing, there is seating as well, and just cool overall decor. They also take cash & credit!

Yelp
I've liked this place for a while now but I didn't go here often because it's a little off the beaten path. However it was recently brought to my attention that keyboard warriors are calling for a boycott of this place because they support Black Lives Matter. That is disgraceful. I will no longer purchase my ice cream anywhere else. Of course it would be hard to support a place that wasn't good so luckily this place also has awesome ice cream and milkshakes. My wife is into the black and white malt milkshake. I go for boring ass vanilla in a waffle cone. I'm a huge proponent of waffle cones. There are a lot of places that are sub par when it comes to the waffle cone. The waffle cone here is sexcellent! Really the only reason I went to Cold Stone anyway was for Shark Week ice cream and they discontinued that. And Rita's .... idk they have commercials.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
They were out of cookies and cream so I subbed for the cookie dough and added Oreos! Was tasty, the best part was definitely the confetti icing!! Ice cream itself wasn't anything to rave about, basic hard ice cream you could get in the grocery store though. Will go back to try the banana split that I saw someone order!

Yelp
I truly hate to have to write this review because this is my neighborhood and the staff are very friendly. But I must be honest and convey my true feelings about Somerset Splits. It's overpriced!!! When my brother first told me about this place and I was expecting custom fresh made ice cream but it turns out the ice cream is from Bassett's and they feature ice creams from 1-900 ice cream of Kensington. The first time I went there I got a banana split and my girlfriend got two scoops with whipped cream. Price $14.50. The second time we went we asked for a scoop of 1-900 ice cream, two different flavors one scoop each. The board clearly states $5 and what you get is a slightly oversized scoop of ice cream. One(1) scoop Five American Dollars($5). 1scoop $5!!!!!! I get it 1-900 is specialty ice cream! The ice cream is tasty but it's not crack cocaine. It's criminal. I'm sorry I'm not price sensitive ever but when it's this extreme I can't help but be offended. I wish them the best. It's just too expensive for me. Maybe if it was a huge scoop or maybe 2 average sized scoops.... 3 stars is being generous even for the regular menu items at these prices. We are not in Northern Liberties.

Maria G.

Yelp
The craziest and most scrumptious sundaes of your dreams! The sundaes are layered so that you get a little everything throughout the whole thing. The decor inside is fun and it's all around good vibes.

Yelp
I've been on a mission to visit Somerset Splits since first hearing about them earlier this summer. My friends and I were in the area on Labor Day and decided to check it out for one last long-weekend splurge. There were only two employees so the line moved slowly but, fortunately, the line was pretty short. I loved the idea of a Kandy Kake milkshake but generally prefer my ice cream in a cone or cup, so I went for a hot fudge sundae with chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. There were a few other sundaes listed but they were pretty banana-focused which isn't really my thing. I would have loved to see a few other options. My sundae was just right; the perfect size and just the right amount of fudge and whipped cream. Overall a great ice cream option for the area!

Yelp
We recently stopped at Somerset Splits after a concert. We figured why not and love to try new places. First off the place serves some of the best ice cream around, Bassett's! Pulling up I was hoping it would be house made but Bassett's is just as good. The location is easy to find as it right next door to Tacconellis. If you don't know where that is well, you must live under a rock. Anyway, parking can be an issue. The place itself should be take out only. It is very small and cramped. They offer a few window seats, maybe 4 or so? The staff were extremely friendly and the place is very clean. I opted for the angry peach special? It was good. I wish there were more peaches. I could have done without the Frosted Flakes on top. It make it a bit too sweet for my liking. Next time I'll try the strawberry shortcake. This is a nice addition to the area and it just shows how Port Richmond is changing for the better.

Yelp
Somerset splits is a cute spot in Port Richmond to get some decadent ice cream. I usually get their strawberry ice cream with the Stocks Strawberry Shortcake. IT IS AMAZING. The balance between cake and ice cream is perfect and will leave you wanting another one!! The owners are pretty hip people and know how to run an ice cream parlor. The place is tiny but definitely a cute spot to take your lovely date after dinner at Tacconellis Pizza or in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I was in love with this place the second I walked in! The restaurant is cute and tiny and gives an old-time ice cream shop feel. They offer a variety of ice cream flavors as well as a bunch of topping options. It's a fairly simple concept. I designed a pretty good sundae with vanilla, fudge, peanut butter sauce, jimmies, and Reese's pieces. I am an absolute peanut butter lover but the fudge over powered the flavor a bit... maybe next time I'll go with less. All in all it was reasonably priced and I enjoyed my sundae. My date went with their strawberry shortcake special and MAY have ended up switching with me because it was SO GOOD. Super sweet and super tasty! I especially loved how sweet the cake was after it was soaked in strawberry sauce. There's not too many seats so it's not exactly a dine in type of place. We took our ice cream to go and enjoyed it on the walk back to our car. Definitely a better choice then going to cold stone!

Yelp
Small ice cream shop with a lot of choices for customization. Its nice to have little shops like this tucked away in the neighborhood that's within walking distance. The staff is very friendly and the orders come out quick. My wife and I got ice cream this time around (traditional hot fudge sundae for me, and my wife got the strawberry shortcake which uses stocks pound cake) but i think I'll have to try one of their cereal milkshakes on my next trip.

Yelp
This place is by far has the best ice cream Sunday I have ever had. Amazing quality ice cream with fresh toppings. I had the banana stand and I will be back for it. The staff was very friendly and appropriative of my business. I know this isn't the best picture!

Aliyah R.

Yelp
Super cute hidden little gem. The amount of flavors and combinations they offer is amazing. They don't rush you to make a decision so you don't feel overwhelmed. They encourage your creativity and offer suggestions. Fresh ingredients and friendly service. Really appreciated the Covid conscious ordering and payment procedure as well and they even have options for the fur babies!

Amelia S.

Yelp
Great, neighborhood ice cream parlor with a friendly, neighborhood feel. Terrific ice cream concoctions (special sundaes, etc.). Love it here and have to stop myself from going every day. Open after 5pm.

Yelp
What a wonderful little gem in the neighborhood! Nothing warms the soul like adorable little spots such as these within walking distance to one's home. Everything used here is premium, from The Bassett's ice cream to the Stock's pound cake used in some of their delicious sundaes. Somerset Splits really takes all of their concoctions to the next level. Case in point, my favorite-the fruity pebble milkshake. Basically the food of the gods. Somerset Splits is doing a phenomenal job during the quarantine to stagger pick-ups and make it as contact-free as possible. The business is ran by very friendly people who care about the neighborhood they are invested in. I'm so happy to have them in the neighborhood and encourage everyone to support them!

Yelp
Anyone who knows me, knows I LOVE ice cream. So of course my family and I had to stop after grabbing some Taconelli's pizza next door. The atmosphere in the store was adorable! I was hoping the ice cream would be homemade, but it was a close second with Basset's Ice Cream. I decided to go for the Kandy Kake milkshake. Lots of Kandy Kake pieces in the milkshake and a whole one on top. I was just disappointed wit the thickness of the milkshake. Otherwise, tasted good. My mom went for the strawberry shortcake sundae, with a piece of Stocks poundcake on top. She thoroughly enjoyed it and said the homemade strawberry sauce was very delicious. I would have given it 4 stars if my milkshake was better, but overall a good, new spot.
google avatar

Meghan G.

Yelp
This is definitely a cute little neighborhood spot in Port Richmond. They have a walk up window to order, and then you wait until your name is called as they put your order on an outside table to remain "contactless". I ordered the Stock's Strawberry Shortcake sundae, which was delicious. The perfect size, not too big not too small. And I love how they tied in another neighborhood gem (Stock's Bakery) to make the sundae very Port Richmond-like. And the cherry, so delicious! Not sure what the difference was, but 10x better than a typical maraschino cherry. The employees were very appreciative of business during this COVID-19 era, thanking each customer for their business as you pick up.

Yelp
Amazing awesome owners serving up equally awesome ice cream treats. From a simple single dip cone to unique neighborhood-Colabs (hello Stocks sundae!) and everything in between. Tons of ice cream flavors to pick from PLUS sorbet and vegan offerings so they have something for everyone! PS. The root beer float is amazing.
google avatar

Brittany E.

Yelp
Yum! They have an extensive menu. Full of treats. I went with a classic vanilla 1scoop in a waffle cone and that was plenty for me! They even had a puppy bowl. Cute place - accepts venmo as payment.

Yelp
Stopped in after Pizza next door. This was my second visit. Both visits were excellent. Loved the chocolate Ice cream. Bassetts is my favorite chocolate Ice cream. But here is the deal: I actually LOVE their whipped cream. It is by far the best homemade whipped cream anywhere. I am a whipped cream lover, but only home made. Can't stand the store bought cans. So the ice cream, whipped cream and toppings were outstanding. The folks there were very friendly and accommodating. The store was very clean. The folks behind the counter kept washing their hands and the scooper. Just kept everything clean. Nice little Ice cream store, with great folks and awesome service. Please keep up the great work!! Thanks for being there.

Yelp
The stocks strawberry short cake is a must get. A delicious slice of stocks pound cake, with vanilla ice cream and a delicious strawberry sauce. The workers are very pleasant which add on to an already fantastic experience.

Yelp
Amazingly good :) I just moved to the area and checked this place out because of the reviews and word of mouth, definitely was not disappointed. I got peanut butter ice cream and another flavor. I went with 4 people and we all got different stuff, it was all so so good. The girl who helped us was really nice and friendly and our ice cream came out pretty fast considering there was four orders of different stuff. I am going to be a frequent customer, especially living close to this spot.

Yelp
Cute new ice cream shop. Selling all bassetts so yummy for tummy .seating with stools & counter and a big bench . Owners very friendly .prices are reasonable. Nice addition to the neighborhood ..

Yelp
Soooooo good. A+ service, awesome sundae menu, and I was really blown away by my hot fudge sundae. Not to be missed, will definitely be making this place a regular stop.

Yelp
This is one of the best ice cream shops in Philly, it changed my mind as I didn't even enjoy ice cream before. The owners are very nice as well :)
google avatar

Aliza C.

Yelp
This brand-new scoop shop in Port Richmond is a serious gem! We wandered in on a Saturday night for a little dessert before dinner at Tacconelli's, and Jay could not have been kinder or more welcoming. Bassets ice cream is stand out as always, and with a $3 single scoop for a generous serving and a meager $0.75 upgrade for a big waffle cone, I was able to indulge guilt free. The storefront is adorable, with great places to sit and hang. For sure will be back when I'm in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
We LOVE the ice cream here. Jay and Dee are wonderful humans. The wait time can be a bit over the top, though.
google avatar

Todd S.

Yelp
A fabulous little gem serving some great ice cream! Heavy on the toppings which is what the people really want! The staff was very welcoming and have a great contactless service up. Order at the window and wait for the magic to come out the front door!

Rachael F.

Yelp
We don't live in the area, but last night we were visiting a friend in Port Richmond and took a walk to get ice cream at Somerset Splits. We got a Shirley Temple float, pistachio in a cone and root beer float. Menu was extensive and it all looked so good. Everything we got was great, and service was quick despite the decent sized crowd that arrived at the same time as us. The owners are sweet people who are working hard to do their part to make this city a better place. They have created a great spot for the neighborhood to enjoy, and I can imagine lots of fond memories being made here among the families who live nearby. We will definitely be back when we get the chance!
google avatar

Argy B.

Yelp
Amazing staff and amazing products! Ran by local people who are always in a good mood and bring the best fresh goodies to their window and to your mouth. I love that they partner up with local ice cream makers to be bring the most banging flavors to our neighborhood.
google avatar

Maria P R.

Yelp
There were 3 choices of vegan ice cream. I had the vegan strawberry and vegan chocolate in a Stocks Strawberry Sundae. The strawberry sauce is homemade. It was just the right consistency and not overly sweet. I was also offered the coconut whip cream. Loved it. The added bonus morsels of Stocks Pound cake made it a Wonderful treat. I'm coming back . I couldn't wait to eat my sundae that I forgot to take a picture of it. Next time!
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Cute little ice cream spot that opened in the neighborhood. The owners are friendly and offer suggestions. The selection of ice cream and toppings -mmmmmmmmm
google avatar

Yelp
Best spot in the neighborhood for ice cream! Owners are so sweet! Always something new to try in the menu!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
This is a great ice cream shop! The interior is adorable and the owners are so nice. Oh and the ice cream is Bassett's - so you know it's top notch. Def will be going back a lot this summer.

Rachel S.

Yelp
Amazingly delicious ice cream confections. The owners are so imaginative and so friendly! Love this place.
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
Got the s'mores sundae and Cinnamon Toast Crunch shake- both were awesome! The sundae had an actual toasted marshmallow smore in and and the shake tasted like a bowl of cereal. Will 100% be back!!
google avatar

Kellie G.

Yelp
This place is the best. No pretense, all love and ice cream. My husband, an aficionado of desserts, said that his recent sundae was the best he has ever had. And that is saying a lot! They offer super creative toppings and sundae combos. Very inspirational. The shop is adorable and the owners could not be sweeter!
google avatar

Tommy P.

Yelp
The two people working behind a desk for super friendly. Had a very homey feel. Ice cream for very delicious even on a cold day. You will not be disappointed :-)
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Adorable, old fashioned ice cream parlour! (much needed in Philadelphia). Great ice cream (Bassets) and the real attraction: GREAT homemade toppings. The hot fudge is to die for. I LOVE the Salted Caramel Pretzel flavour ice cream, too. Super nice and welcoming owner and staff. Prices are reasonable!
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Great old fashioned style ice cream shop. Very creative, special treats. Owner is very friendly and welcoming.

Natalie B.

Yelp
Wonderful variety of creative sundaes and great quality ice cream if you just want a cone. I got the strawberry shortcake with Stocks pound cake, they also had tasty cake milkshakes!! Philly phavorites!!!
google avatar

Dylan H.

Yelp
Such a whimsical, cute ice cream shop! Had a blast getting over the top sundaes with the friendly staff after eating way too much pizza next door at Taconelli's. Will definitely be back with or without pizza.

Yvonne K.

Yelp
Great little place for ice cream! Love it! A diamond in the rough! Definitely a place you want to check out and you won't be disappointed!

Brittany P.

Yelp
I was never so much of an ice cream person when it came to dessert, but now this is my go-to place when I want something sweet. Living a block away is amazing, but I would totally travel for this place if I had to. It's a literal work of art every time I go there and I've never been disappointed. They also figured out a way to stay open during this pandemic, which is amazing. It's been a huge treat during such an inherently stressful time. Y'all are the best!
