Taiyaki Chain SomiSomi Will Open Its Second DFW Location in Carrollton | Eater Dallas

"Known for its Korean-style, fish-shaped taiyaki filled with ice cream, the shop serves brightly colored swirls of soft-serve—flavors include matcha, Oreo cookie, and banana—piped into warm taiyaki cones that are prefilled with custard, red bean, or taro paste and finished with toppings such as fresh fruit, cereal, candy, and matcha powder. There’s also a savory cheddar taiyaki option and cup-served soft-serve for a simpler treat. The brand opened its first DFW location in Frisco in February 2019 and has leased a 2,389-square-foot space in the Carrollton Town Center at George Bush and Old Denton Road for its second DFW outpost." - Amy McCarthy

Google
My Go-To Dessert Place! I LOVE Somi Somi! The texture of their soft serve is so smooth and airy, and the flavors are always spot on. The taiyaki comes out warm, soft, and perfectly filled. I love being able to customize toppings and fillings. The combination is magical. My son is obsessed with it, and now my boyfriend’s daughter is officially hooked too! The matcha and ube swirl is my all time favorite. My boyfriend tried the cold brew float and definitely was delicious!! We always leave happy. The staff is friendly and the shop is always clean. Highly recommend to anyone with a sweet tooth! 10/10!

Google
Delicious hot and cold desserts all in one place. The fish-shaped pastries are made fresh in front of you and filled with warm options like Nutella, red bean, or custard, then paired perfectly with fresh, creamy soft serve. It’s such a comforting and satisfying treat. The staff are friendly, and the space is fun with plenty of options for everyone. They stay open late and can get busy, but the line moves quickly—an ideal spot to hang out late at night.

MY FAVORITE ICECREAM PLEASE EVER!! I got the Upside Down Ahboong with chocolate icecream, extra Nutella (cost extra $0.50) and a small macaroon that came with the icecream. There Taiyaki cone is made fresh and is between crunchy and soft. When I got the extra Nutella filling it was actually too much for me, so I suggest not getting extra. Also, I would have rather picked the strawberry instead of the macaroon. 🫶 still super delicious you won't regret getting this icecream.

Google
My second time here, but a different location. So my boyfriend got the Ahboong (upside down) with custard filling and Oreo ice cream. The Ahboong tasted like a really fluffy pancake and the custard filling was yummy and had the perfect consistency. The Oreo flavor was good too, but seemed like a basic chocolate flavor. What’s good is that you can put Oreo crumbs on it, so that made up for its lack of Oreo. I got the soft serve in a cup with Oreo and Ube flavor, which was so good. It was a perfect combination of the Oreo and Ube. Not too sweet and the Ube wasn’t overpowering. Definitely a must flavor to try. Overall, a very yummy and happy experience!

Google
always love somi somi, one of the best dessert place, i’m all in for matcha and their matcha custard for the taiyaki was so nice, plus the fish is always freshly fried so it’s warm and crunchy, yum

Google
order was done super fast. got cookies n cream ice cream with the Nutella filling, cocoa pebbles on top. very good!!!

Google
Pleasantly surprised by how quick the service was! Taiyaki is fresh and warm and the ice cream was smooth and creamy. With the huge crowd inside, I was expecting a longer wait to receive my order but it was fast!

Google
Best teyaki-style dessert in the DFW area. I personally fancy their mocha with ube cups. Their premade strawberry milk is average. I mean you can even make it at home easily. But their milky and silky ice cream is unparalleled. Spacious and light interior modern design is usually full of lots of young couples and teenagers. Recommended.

Yelp
One of my favorite soft serve ice cream places! Love getting the fish with Nutella inside. It's always a hit? Never a miss. Lines are always out the door during peak times so be aware. Lines do go very quickly though so don't be discouraged. Service is always nice and fast! I always take friends here. It's a good place for groups because of how fast the line goes.

Yelp
Somi Somi always hits the spot when I'm in need of an after-dinner dessert. I love getting the upside down Ah-boong, with custard. Every soft-serve flavor here is a solid choice. After ordering from the kiosk, the workers are quick with a fresh waffle fish, making my dessert perfect every time. It's cute on the inside with dessert fish decorated on the bright yellow walls.

Yelp
Ube is my fav! Definitely try that one! Stop late at night and not a lot of people in and great service and tastes great!

Yelp
Stopped in for a cool treat because it's scorching outside. I wasn't really sure what taiyaki was but I wanted to find out. Turns out it's a fish shaped cake/pastry that gets filled with red bean paste or a custard. Looks pretty interesting but I think I'll come back to try. My grandson and I both got a cup of Oreo flavored soft serve. I got Oreo dust on top and he got fruity pebbles on his. It was really yummy for us both. We enjoyed it inside as there was plenty of seating and the a/c was blowing strong. If you stop in the menu is pretty simple and the staff will explain how it works if you have questions. Cashless pay at the register and retrieve your order on the side. You have a few options for the taiyaki like Nutella etc so I'll have to head back to give that a try.

Yelp
Need a something to cool you off during the hot summers? This place brings tasty Japanese treats and flavorful matcha soft serve together as a great paring. Ordering is pretty simple, you can either order via kiosk or a staff can help you. They are friendly and they make the taiyaki in front of you, which is always fun to watch. The filling of the Taiyaki is great with Nutella and the crunchy exterior really helps with the texture. The soft-serve matcha was great, it really had the matcha flavor and sweetness I like. You can get it with toppings, we did Oreo which is a favorite of ours. Great for individuals or for sharing. There are seating areas inside and they have self service water available.

Yelp
I went to SomiSomi twice during my stay in Dallas, and I hope they consider opening a location near me soon. The store is extremely busy, but the ordering system and the speed at which the crew works makes this a fairly efficient experience. I tried the Ah-Boong upside down: soft-serve cup topped with fish-shaped waffle filled with a cream. The concept is not foreign to me as someone who grew up eating boonguh-bbang (taiyaki) and Samanco ice cream. The art is not lost on me, though. It's harder than you'd think to make the batter and filled it proper proportion and bake it on the grill properly. I will say, SomiSomi's batter is a little more chewy and less flavorful than ones I grew up with, but it makes the waffle perfect for pairing with the ice cream. For the soft-serve, I tried the ube flavor and the horchata flavor. The ube was nice and sweet, striking in color. But the horchata flavor was really special. I also had just the regular fish-shaped pastries. Like I said, the batter was a little lacking in part because it's designed to be eaten with the ice cream. The fillings were lovely, though not spread too well throughout the pastry. My favorite filling was the black sesame, but the red bean and the matcha cream were also lovely. Down to the little choice of strawberry or macaron they top you off with when you go to pick up your ice cream, the store has branding and quality down pat. It's good for cute Instagram pics, but also the products they deliver are really tasty. I'm going to miss SomiSomi. Seriously, please come to Long Island.
google avatar

Thais D.

Yelp
Good service. Around 10 p.m. it gets busy and lines form since it's the only dessert place open after that time, but it's still a good option.
google avatar

Yelp
we've been to Somi Somi a million times and this is probably still my favorite ice cream place. They have some rotating flavors but I'll almost always go for the Ube or whatever Ube combo mix they have. The upside down taiyaki is just the best thing ever! I always fill mine with Nutella and it just goes perfectly with the soft serve. I have a big sweet tooth so nothing is ever "too sweet" for me. It does get packed depending when you go, but never holds me back from going . That just means it's that good right? Somi Somi will always be a must go to spot for me, especially for dessert after dinner. Frisco and Carrollton have plenty of great dinner spots, so this place is always the go to for dessert when we're around there.

Yelp
First time visiting Somisomi and definitely won't be the last. Texture of ice cream is soft serve texture of silk in your mouth. The cherry on top is the fresh warm waffle cone on top. Seriously thinking about going back tomorrow!

Yelp
Got to love these sweet treats! Order line moves quick at self service kiosks. Plenty of waiting space until your order is ready. Less than 5min and your order is ready. Ube softserve was stellar. Taiyaki will have you swimming in dessert heaven
google avatar

Vancy S.

Yelp
There was a lot of people inside so I had to come in. Upon walking in you smell the sweetness of the fish shaped cones and waffle being made to order. There was a line of people waiting for their order. You can either order at the kiosk or from the cashier. There are the signature goldfish-shaped waffle cone stuffed with your choice of filling & soft serve or taiyaki(Crispy and chewy fish-shaped pastry with your choice of filling). They look so good! Love that you get to watch them make it fresh. I preferred the taiyaki filled with red bean and custard. It was delicious. The fish shape cone was crispy on the outside and moist oozing with the filling in every bite. A must try when you are nearby. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Stopped at Somi Somi, I chose the "upside down" ube soft serve topped with a taiyaki filled with red bean. This is a really fun combo to enjoy! Featuring a smooth, creamy texture as well as a wonderful combination of sweetness along with earthiness, the ube soft serve was quite a treat. But the real star? The taiyaki! Given its freshly made nature, it featured an exquisitely crispy exterior in addition to a delightfully warm, velvety red bean filling inside. Every bite of smooth soft serve paired exceptionally well, delivering textural and flavorful contrast. The shop's atmosphere had an entirely bright and inviting quality, and the service was consistently quick despite a continual flow of customers. It is definitely something that anyone wanting a really fun dessert should try.

Yelp
The ube and cookies n cream soft serve were cool, sweet and creamy! The black sesame and oreo taiyaki were sweet and savory! Good customer service. Spacious parking, however, it is always packed.

Yelp
The food is so good, I've always wanted to try this place and I finally got to today and it was so good and I would definitely be coming here again
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
I love this place. This is the perfect definition of a sweet treat. I usually get the one upside down with the soft serve ice cream. This place is usually very busy so the environment is a little loud however the staff is pretty nice!
google avatar

Juan Q.

Yelp
The fish shaped ice-cream holder (cone) was freshly made and flavorful. You got to be quick. With the fish breading being hot that the ice-cream will melt quickly. Anyways awesome place nice location it's in the middle of all kinds of shops and restaurants.
google avatar

Esther J.

Yelp
Wow this soft serve ice cream in a flakey/mochi-like fish bun is delicious. I dream about this place since I live out of town. There are lots of ice cream flavors to choose from - and fillings as well. They even have a cheddar flavor if you're more into savory things. I personally love the matcha ice cream and I get it in the backwards ahboong with red bean filling. Also try the hotteok taiyaki! Its delicious. I knocked off a star because the wait is usually long and there aren't many places to sit. But definitely recommend trying!
google avatar

Yelp
WHAT I ORDERED: Matcha & Banana Milk swirl soft served served upside with the ah boong or fish shaped pastry on top. Added fruit pebbles as a topping and strawberry. PARKING: Shared parking lot, plenty of parking spots but the area is busy may have to make a couple laps for a spot INSIDE: Bright, fun designs and spacious. There are two kiosks available to self-order which made it convenient. The staff will call your name/order number through a mic which makes it easy to not miss when your order is ready. THE FOODS: I love the weekly rotation of different flavors and was excited to try the Matcha & Banana Milk swirl. The flavors went well together, I would say the matcha flavor could have been a little stronger but still delicious. Great dessert, especially in this Texas heat!
google avatar

Kenya R.

Yelp
I love custard taiyaki. Somi Somi's was delicious. It wasn't too sweet. As a matter of fact, it was perfect. I have known about other fillings like red bean, Nutella, and chocolate, but I have never seen cheese! They offer a cheddar cheese version and I'm in heaven! It was so good. Thank goodness I don't live close. Ordering was easy since they have 2 kiosk. I also like that you can watch them make your taiyaki. It was very nice and clean with a simple aesthetic and good music.
google avatar

Yelp
A bit pricey but definitely worth it. I really like the new flavor of banana milk, but matcha is always my go to. Chocolate is great as well. Matcha soft serve, matcha custard fish, matcha powder. Must get! Cute place, good service, amazing dessert, what more can you ask for.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
They are always busy but the service is fast and the ice cream is always reliable. It's creamy and the rotating flavor is always delicious.

Yelp
Great ice cream, pricey. Very busy shop. If you're planning to come on Saturday/Sunday parking is a challenge.

Yelp
My cousins and I hit up somi somi in Carrollton for a sweet treat after dinner. They are popular for their swirls and taiyaki. They rotate their ice cream flavors every week, you can find their updated flavors on their Instagram page. I got their matcha and milk tea swirl in a cup. It came sprinkled with matcha powder and they give you a choice of a macaron or strawberry to top it off. I really enjoyed my ice cream. It was really creamy and smooth. It's honestly a lot of ice cream and well worth the price to me. They always have a long line here but it moves very fast. Parking can be very hectic on the weekends though.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this somisomi spot. Our desserts came out so quickly right after ordering on the kiosk. Super friendly staff! I really love their matcha soft serve flavor.
google avatar

Tifna T.

Yelp
Expect long lines and friendly employees. I really enjoyed the ube soft serve. It was so creamy and refreshing. I enjoyed it even more because it tasted authentic. Definitely recommend going here with family and with friends.
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
Somi somi is my favorite spot for soft serve cream and taiyaki. This location was busy but the wait is not long at all. You can order yourself or with a staff member. The shop has tons of seatings too. Will always be back for their ube/matcha mix!
google avatar

Sarrang P.

Yelp
Fast service and easy to order kiosk. They make your order right away and at the end you can choose all the toppings you want. Service was good and quick and the icecream was delicious. I goldfish bread was crispy and delicious and paired well the icecream. I got the matcha and and husband got the coffee banana (which tasted like banana milk). I am not a big fan of banana milk but my husband is and he really enjoyed his icecream. I Really enjoyed my matcha esp with the extra matcha powder on top. The only thing I didn't like was the custard filling. It was a bit tasteless and the texture was just not for me so next time I'll prob stick to Nutella or no filling.
google avatar

Foodie Y.

Yelp
Easy to order. Hard to see the toppings though, apart from the cereals. Wish the free water cups were a little bigger. Otherwise, recommend trying this place if you are in the area.
google avatar

Ben L.

Yelp
Overall Rating: 4.5/5 1. Atmosphere: / Bright, modern, slightly small so limited space to enjoy your ice cream 2. Service: Customer service was welcoming and employees were friendly 3. Food/Products: The ice cream flavors live up to expectation and the famed fish and ice cream combo is amazing 4. Pricing: The food is fairly priced for its quality and dine in. 5. Overall Experience: The overall experience was good. The food was great, the environment was nice, the staff were friendly. Great area for Highlights/Recommendations: N/A

Yelp
This place has been around forever but I had no desire to try it until my niece said she wants some. To my surprised it was good. The ice cream and the fish pastry. The kids liked it too but they like anything ice cream related lol. Definitely would like to try more flavors they have to offer.
google avatar

Gray S.

Yelp
Perfect place to go to cleanse your palate. I have enjoyed this right after eating at Gen or Hot Pot. It can get super crowded but no worries you can walk around the plaza
google avatar

Yelp
Somisomi is one of the best dessert spots out there. Their soft serves, ahboong, and taiyaki desserts are top notch, not too sweet -- just the right amount.
google avatar

Rigo M.

Yelp
I thought this posted way earlier but they are very deserving of 5 stars for various reasons. But the main thing is the food is great, genius.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Thank you to the workers who helped hold merchandise that I got from another store and accidentally left it there. Super friendly and helpful! Besides that Somi somi is consistently tasty among all the locations but this one in particular was great because as soon as you step in the store the smell of the fresh tayaki batter was soooo yummy and they gave a free half a macaron which made it so cute!!! It's delicious, not too heavy, and such a good amount!
google avatar

Kristianne B.

Yelp
Last time I was in town, I tried this place and loved it so much so I to had to come back. This time I got something different. I got the ube ice cream with custard filled taiyaki and added coconut flakes as my topping. Service was pretty quick. You order at the kiosk and just wait for your order. We didn't have to wait that long for our order. I also order a 2 piece taiyaki to go. I got ube and red bean. Very delicious!
google avatar

Roxy W.

Yelp
I love that Somisomi is here! It is conveniently located in the same shopping center as 99 Ranch Market, Daiso and Gen's Korean BBQ. You order from their tablets and wait until your name is called. Once you are called, they'll ask for the toppings you want and if you'd like either a macaron or strawberry on top. We love the Oreo flavored soft serve. We tried the Milk Tea and it was delicious. We normally eat taiyaki with Nutella or custard and both were delicious! Wait times were minimal at less than 10 minutes. Overall, I'll be back if I'm in the area!
google avatar

Devon G.

Yelp
Great location! I got the taiyaki ice cream with Nutella and it was so great! ** Taiyaki is the fish shaped pancake with (insert fav flavor) filling. It was around $5 and they had a long line but it went pretty fast for how busy they were. Once we ordered, we had our ice cream within 20 ish mins. We had about 15 people in front of us. I would plan for it to be busy Thurs to sun night because it's a dessert spot next to so many great restaurants.
google avatar

Yelp
Looking for a dessert spot after your meal in Carrollton? SOMISOMI is a classic and popular spot! They have amazing soft serve with rotating flavors such as milk tea, mango, ube, black sesame with freshly made taiyaki in front of you!! This has been a must-stop for me for 3 years now, and I don't think my opinion will ever change. I absolutely love all of their soft-serve flavors. There are always 6 flavors every time so you can be sure to find something you like. They have fruity and milk flavors, and everything is so good. My favorite is their milk tea flavor because it's light and fits perfectly with my red bean taiyaki. I highly recommend getting their upside-down ah-bong. It's a cup of soft serve, with a fish taiyaki at the top. It's perfect if you don't want to deal with messes, especially in the Texas heat. The lines are always packed whenever we stop by, but it moves pretty fast. Their taiyaki are always crispy and hot, even when I take a box home. They have two locations in Dallas and Frisco, but I hope they'll expand to Plano in the future.
google avatar

Jess M.

Yelp
Somisomi has become a frequent stop every time we come to the DFW area. Each time we show up, we're treated to consistently delicious fish waffles (taiyaki) and we're always left wanting more. The soft serve is also nice, especially when the Texas heat becomes exceptionally brutal. The last time we were here, it was packed with people wanting taiyaki. However, there was only one person working. One person (her name was Cat) was taking orders, payments, and making the food. Despite there only being one person there, everyone got to make their orders and get their food pretty quickly. Cat, if you're reading this, you were making the heck out of those taiyaki. You deserve a raise. If you're the owner of this establishment and you're reading this, you should hire more people. You should also give Cat a raise. Anyway, you should check out Somisomi. The food's great and so is the service (especially if you're getting fixed up by Cat).
google avatar

Franki H.

Yelp
What a fun spot!! Clean and easy to order at the kiosk!! I got an upside down banana milk soft serve with Nutella and a strawberry. Banana milk flavor was similar to Laffy Taffy banana flavor. The taiyaki was hot, fresh and not too sweet. We also ordered an upside down cookies n cream with custard. The custard wasn't as good as the Nutella-- very hot pudding like. Ended up ordering a 5piece Nutella taiyaki for our group too. It was way too much dessert but it was all so tasty we couldn't stop! For the price, this place is a must!!!
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
This place is so nice and roomy, great for hanging out. It was pretty packed but very easy to place an order and got everything we ordered pretty quickly. We got the Taiyaki with Ube ice cream and a custard filling. Soooo yummy!!
google avatar

May G.

Yelp
I got their banana milk and milk swirl, and I like their banana milk, but not the milk swirl. I got their banana milk and cookies n cream, and I liked both flavors. I get the Oreo crumbs topping, and I think their macaroon is better than their strawberry. Their ice cream is very creamy which I like.
google avatar

Amelia R.

Yelp
This location is consistently good, and the prices are nice for the quality of taiyaki and ice cream. Lines can be long but it's worth it
google avatar

Bianca D.

Yelp
Always hits the spot. Favorite ever is their milk and ube swirl with Nutella taiyaki. Always a hit when I bring people here!
google avatar

Hector F.

Yelp
This place was good! The best part is that is lactose free ice cream!! It taste so good! And great service! The horchata is amazingly good! So so good !! Everything we had was good!
google avatar

Yelp
Food (4.2/5): Somisomi's aesthetic is on par with the quality of their foods. Soft serve is great, I usually get the upside down Ah boong and taiyakis (5). Their upside down ah boong-soft serve is top tier, but it's not something I ever crave. The taiyaki on the soft serve is much better than the taiyakis. The foods meet the expectations, but do not exceed them. My friends like it and crave it, so whenever they want to go, I'll tag along and get something, have I yet ever went on my own. I had the horchata and milk tea swirl which was great and I came back a couple days later with my other friend and got the cookie butter and matcha swirl. Service (-/5): The service is a quick cashier action or kiosk-don't have much to based on, but the short term interaction is mediocrely nice. Ambiance (4.8/5): It's a cute, very spacey interior. Plenty of seats, both inside and outside. Cute little lights for aesthetic photos. It's a cute place for dessert and pictures, to hang out friends/family or on a date.

Yelp
Great sorry serve! The milk and taro is perfectly sweetened and not overly sweet! Super cute place and great music!

Yelp
I'm OBSESSED with Somi-Somi. Weekends make this plaza in Carrollton very high traffic but lines move surprisingly quick with a touch screen order kiosk. Flavors - I've been here 2x now and they always DELIVER. So many combinations and each fish is baked fresh and filled just for your order. Freshness is guaranteed. I cannot wait to come back and try more! The warm and crispy fish pastry, gooey filling, and delicious cold, ice cream are a pairing made in heaven. Customer service: Incredible! Even under so much pressure with many customers ordering and lines growing so quickly, I witnessed the staff working with grace. If orders need to be adjusted, they gently remind each other and get the job done! With so many orders, they still make time to be courteous and give kind gestures to each customer. I felt as if my order was specifically made just for me. Ambiance: very nice interior. Shop can be a bit tight during weekends and evenings but they do make an effort to have benches, a waiting area for lines, and several tables.
