This ice cream is delish in the pastry fish BUT if you did not like your first French kiss, this is a set up for a flashback. Not that it stopped me. I just paused a long bit.
The prep is not consistent. My first prepped one was by a youngish man, and his prep made Somi Somi a clear delineation from other ice cream places. I was sold on it. The other two prep people were a younger woman the second time, and then an older woman the third time. Their prep did not make this soft serve its own kind of stand out special soft serve. Just a soft serve with waffle. Albeit, a yummy ice cream in good flavor and texture.
Now the French kiss, since it could possibly bring an unpleasant, or intrusive flashback. If, at some point, you lift that waffle fish out and go for biting the soft-serve filled mouth --that's when the unexpected flashback happened for me.
I was so looking forward to that spongy waffle with slight crisp edges wrapped around the soft serve --like when you get to the bottom of a cake cone, but even better. Another childhood dream come true. But the darn wide open mouth was suddenly coming for me, rather than me coming for it. (And mutuality would have been a weird feeling too. I may not be vegetarian these days, but I don't like food anthropomorphized while I'm eating it!) So just prepare yourself. Unless you enjoyed that first approach to a French kiss -- then never mind.
Back to the best prep so far... The guy filled the fish, not just the cup, and made certain to put enough topping. I chose toasted coconut! Mmm! The soft serve is not too sweet, it is dense enough, and creamy enough too. The toasted coconut sprinkle is all I have tried. It is remarkably even in cut and brownness. Like an OCD foodie panel was involved.
On the other two visits... The second person barely filled the fish. The third person didn't fill the fish at all. So the pastry fish just became like a garnishing. It was disappointing, actually. Yes, I was sad about that one. And the topping was nearly nil those last two times. I was like, "Why did you even ask me?"
That first experience of soft serve in the pastry was so good that I will not give up.
