a great spot for a special yet not too extravagant dinner at somm in the mandarin oriental. the meal was a good balance of high-quality, affordable fine dining where all the dishes felt in harmony, and nothing was overpowering. we started with the aka uni french toast, which i really enjoyed — the uni was super fresh and its umami flavor really shined & went well with the soft brioche. the french onion soup gratinated was another win, with a great balance of soup, bread, cheese, and onion; it was cozy and satisfying without being too heavy. a real highlight was the dry-aged pigeon — tender with crispy skin, and the mild mala seasoning went nicely with the acidicity of the plum. we ended with the abinao chocolate soufflé, which was a perfect sweet finish. the staff were super friendly and the service was great, just as you’d expect here. my only small note is that the tables are a bit close together. nonetheless, i’d definitely go back for a nice but casual meal.
