Fried Chicken Shack Bae’s Chicken Opens November 6 in Downtown Portland | Eater Portland

"Back in 2015, Camden and then-partner Katie Poppe opened a fried chicken shop on Southeast Division called Son of a Biscuit, which Camden now calls the “runt of the litter” and admits was driven by ego; he says he didn’t spend a year researching it and that it wasn’t the best he could do." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
The potato tots are Blaahhh!! I don’t know what kind of biscuit this was but with a name called “Son of a Biscuit” I was expecting something special and whatever cheese you put in the eggs just don’t go together well. Try American cheese!! I would try it again but different menu items.

Google
I was excited to eat at this restaurant because the reviews were good. I ordered a bacon egg and cheese biscuit. The bacon was burnt and eggs were dry and biscuit was OK I was very disappointed in this breakfast

Google
Worst Breakfast my wife and I have had in a looooong time. Each took 2 bites and tossed both plates into the trash. Menu and reviews looked good so we stopped by. Got a ham biscuit, chicken biscuit, 2 hash browns and 2 coffees. Everything is self serve, so the price of the coffee is wild that its sitting in a pot for me to pour. hash browns not crispy and so much grease it leaked through the plate onto the table. Biscuits dry, no flavor on ham or any chicken seasoning. Best part was my bottled OJ. Wife deemed not even worth thr effort to get a refund so we left. Door alarm goes off every 10 seconds and is very loud. Avoid this place until quality changes.

Google
We order 2 bacon egg and cheese biscuits and they were the nastiest things I’ve ever tasted in my life! The biscuit was so dry , the egg was disgusting and over cooked and flavorless and the bacon was burnt! Whoever cooked this to serve should never ever cook again …..

When you pull up to the side of the gas station you can see the restaurant. Right off i noticed the smell is amazing. The restaurant is clean and welcoming. Sadly the cashier is not as welcoming. The cook/ chef spoke from the kitchen a couple of minutes after I entered. The cashier went on taking care of the drive thru and others. Eventually she asked me if I wanted to order. I had ordered online so I got my food and left. The hash browns were crispy and even a little spicy. Tasted like they were cooked in oil with spicy foods. I also got a chicken burrito. It was very fresh, very large and delicious. Definitely worth the price. This little locally owned place is worth a visit. Son of a Biscut gets an A in this teacher's opinion.

Google
Food was fresh, affordable, and tasted absolutely great. Some of the best cheese grits I have ever eaten and I'm country! Chicken was hot and seasoned perfectly and biscuit was soft as a cloud. Will definitely be eating here in the future

Google
The food was good. The only reason that I rated it 4 stars is because the sausage wasn't quite what I was expecting. It was probably just the particular kind of sausage that they use, and that's fine. I had the biscuits and gravy and it was good. The biscuits are great! You can tell that they are fresh made and I like biscuit places like that.

Google
atmosphere was really amazing. Staff was real nice especially Nina. Great communicator great services. I highly recommend this place and the food is out of this world.

Yelp
I frequent here more than I should, lol Friendly service & the food is reasonably priced and delicious. I see they added lunch items (before it was just breakfast) so I'd love to check those out one day.

Yelp
The customer service is good. The lady taking the order was nice. The food was not good. It lacked taste, flavor and it lacked good presentation. The place was also cold. They didn't bother turning the heat on for their customers. I sat there and ate with my coat on very uncomfortable. The prices are great though. That's why they will have a lot of people to continue to support the business. But if you want good food, this is not the place to go if you want reasonable price food when your hungry this is a place to go. Plenty of parking I would not go back.

Yelp
Had a small dinner the night before and was really hungry for some breakfast the next day. Remembered this place on Google for breakfast spots nearby. Was really excited to try it and was looking forward to a sausage patty without pork. I debated between salmon and turkey and chose the turkey. I really should have read the reviews as I usually do, but it was before work and I didn't have time for all that. Long story short, I placed the order online for pickup, got in the car and was severely disappointed to see this burnt piece of meat. I hoped the taste was better than the looks but it wasn't. The first bite was nasty. Please stop making this turkey sausage because something ain't right. The biscuit probably would have been alright because it was soft, but the sausage made everything taste bad. On top of that the cashier was somewhat on the rude side and just didn't have any customer service. At least be nice selling unremarkable food. Just glad I didn't get sick like another reviewer did. Do better.

Yelp
Let me set the scene. I walk in, look at the menu asked if they had bagels (god forbid having variety is a crime) cashier stated no I proceed to order no issues. Cashier walks to the chefs w/ gauges and says we need to change our name and he replies with something crazy and or rude. So much so that the cashiers turns around to make sure I didn't hear what he just said. She looks back at him and he says oh I said that out loud and keeps on working. Now idk what was said because I was actually looking around about to sit to dine in when I noticed the cashier looking back and me. First impression. Won't be coming back I ordered the sausage egg and cheese sub hash brown no tots burrito. Very delicious I love me some legit hashbrowns Overall this place would've been a 5 and frequent visit if wasn't for that interaction.

Yelp
Finally made it into Son of a Biscuits today, and this place is solid! The food is delicious and portion sizes very generous. The fiery chicken lived up to its name, and the sausage patties definitely had a kick as well. Located near a service station, it doesn't look like much - but don't be fooled. You don't need fancy with food this good! They also serve lunch, but we having tried that yet. Service is friendly and the ambiance is great - busy, but no wait. Highly recommend if you're looking for a new breakfast joint!

Yelp
The biscuits are where it's at. Skip the chain coffee shops and stop here instead, you'll be glad you did!

Yelp
Great food! Consistently a great place to find a variety of breakfast favorites and new eats. The biscuits being front and center their highlight food, are great everything. There are other dishes they offer outside the normal biscuits and sandwiches, breakfast wraps, son of a pancakes, breakfast bowls, biscuits and gravy, and plenty of a la cart options round out the menu. As for ambiance, don't let the gas station attached to the restaurant fool you, the place is clean and orderly. Music coming from the kitchen is nice but may not be for everyone. The staff is great and always friendly. It is easy to become a regular and they will start greeting you by name after only a few visits if you are a friendly.

Yelp
After passing this place a thousand times I decided to check it out. The inside was clean and had the typical small cafe vibe. The service was good, just order at the counter and wait for my name to be called to receive my order. I got the fire chicken biscuit with cheese. The biscuit was better than I thought it would be. The biscuit was actually moist instead of dry. The chicken was cooked to perfection and very tender and tasty. Overall, my fire chicken biscuit was great and I will come back to try other items on the menu.

Yelp
Wonderful place to have a great biscuit! I will be going back, place was clean with friendly service.

Yelp
First time here, was greeted by the owner and decided to eat in rather than take out. Cashier was in training and he was helping her with my order. I ordered a two egg breakfast with biscuits and gravy and bacon. The food was okay, bacon very well done, everything served on a paper plate. This is really a biscuit sandwich takeout place tbh. Plenty of clean tables to sit at, but nobody was there but me. I think I paid almost $15 for my plate of food. Wouldn't go out of my way to return but everyone was very friendly.

Yelp
I love a handmade biscuit... love love love! And, being attached to a gas station made even more confident I was going to stumble on greatness. The menu is in a large font above the cashier station. The cashier was very pleasant and my order took a couple of quick minutes to be prepared. When the kitchen team handed the cashier my order, someone shouted- thank you Kat, have a great day. What a wonderful personal touch- reading my name off the ticket. I did realize until after beginning to eat the sausage biscuit that the meat was made in house. It a bit of a spicy kick and a lot less sage flavoring like a traditional sausage. It was a wonderful surprise and treat. I am rarely in this part of the Atlanta suburbs but when I am back, I will return. I was fortunate to stumble in- thanks fellow Yelpers

Yelp
This place is amazing. Hidden in the left side of a BP gas station across the highway from Frida's is THE best place in the Lawrenceville/Grayson area to have breakfast or lunch. We have tried three or four of their breakfast bowls. Our favorite is the grilled tenderloin on a bed a crispy hash browns with the eggs on the side. Their pancakes are huge and are done perfectly, never soggy. Now we get to the really good part - their chicken tenders. They are superb. You can order them in any one of four levels of spiciness. Two words of caution: Don't come here if you're not hungry. The portions are huge. On Sunday mornings after 11:00 phone your order in ahead of time. Thy have a huge following of the after church group for both dine in and carry out. We make every excuse we can no matter how flimsy to go there often. They do also give military discounts to active duty, retired and veterans.

Yelp
This is your sign to stop by Son of a Biscuits tomorrow for some breakfast. I've tried a variety of menu items but you've gotta try the sausage biscuit. It's my favorite spot for a quick breakfast that's not a chain. The made-in-house sausage is delicious! Salty, garlicky, crisp on the edges. It's the best sausage I've ever had! Their biscuits are great too. I've tried the turkey sausage and I was hoping for it to taste just like the pork one but made with turkey, however it is on the sweet side. Also, the fire chicken is just that. Pickle brined chicken breast with a spicy cornmeal breading. It's amazing with some honey and hot sauce. I forget I'm not a fan of their grits every time and kinda regret ordering them... The hash browns to-go are kinda soggy and greasy. But go for the biscuits! And tater barrels!

Yelp
This is ridiculous! My hubby stopped at this place on the way home from work and ordered us breakfast to go. The turkey sausage was burnt, pancakes burnt, over medium eggs were overcooked. The grits were cold too the point the cheese wasn't even melted in the grits. It is beyond me why this restaurant would even give this burnt food to a customer.

Yelp
We just loved to the area and I've been wanting to visit this place bc of the yelp reviews. We left disappointed. Front end service was good. The gentleman at the register was friendly and polite. The food left much to be desired. We ordered two meals and both were subpar. My husband said his scrambled eggs tasted like powdered eggs...they looked like it too. Biscuit was dense and flavorless. Coffee was empty so we asked for some to be made fresh but the carafe was never put out again. My eggs were overcooked and pancake also dense/lacked flavor. We left without eating much and went down the road to another pancake establishment.

K M.

Yelp
Their grits are so good I had a Turkey Biscuit and didn't have room to eat it Good service as well I'll be back soon
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
It was just okay in my opinion. The chicken definitely didn't have any seasoning on it! The batter seems to be held together well but no salt at all on the actual chicken. We also had a bacon egg and cheese biscuit. I didn't actually see a slice of cheese but perhaps it was inside the egg! But it was also just okay the bacon was good the biscuits are actually okay but they need to hit them with some butter when they come out the oven. It's the little touches that make the meal to me. Service was okay not a long wait at all. Ambiance =They do have some seating inside( it's connected to a gas station) but we did take out on a Saturday morning. Not sure if I would go back again nothing really blew me away. But not terrible.

Yelp
Absolutely the best biscuits I've had in Atlanta since moving here 25 years ago! Light and fluffy. I've read about this place and finally ended up out in their area during their operating hours; I'm so glad to finally have been able to try them out - I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
So unless you were looking for it, you probably wo it would not find this place. Is it a gas station, but a lot of good stuff is in gas stations! They do breakfast here at a close at about 1:00 p.m. I stopped in because I was early for an event that I had in the area so thought it was stopping for a quick breakfast. The service was good, everybody was super friendly. Either the cook or the owner came out and greeted the people in the dining room and asked how everything was all that was really nice. The food was okay. It looks like a cafeteria kind of situation. Plastic trays and plastic ware. But they have all the basics, hash browns, bacon and eggs, grits, pancakes, all the breakfast papers. I stuck with the grits bowl with sausage that experience sausage was a bit overcooked but other than I thought I thought it was fine.

Yelp
Super good. If you're really hungry this is what I'd get. The two ladies in the front accommodated me and my girlfriend. They were amazing. The chef came out to say hey. He cooks like a Haitian man (great compliment lol); everything was seasoned perfectly. I have been trying not to eat here everyday. The customers are great too. It was lovely inside. The people are very friendly.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast and service! I ordered eggs and bacon which was cooked perfectly and a great portion.

Yelp
I have went to this place 2 days in a row. The first day I got there sorry we had to code early then the net day march 10 the guy didn't have no food and he said he had a family emergency and had to close early. I will not go there ever again.

Jared L.

Yelp
I always get a sausage or chicken biscuit. Those are consistently good. The chicken is well seasoned. The underrated items are the beef Cheesesteak and lemon pepper wings. The wings are well seasoned and fried to perfection. I ended up going back in one day for the wings.

Yelp
These folks do biscuits right. Stopped by for the first time to try a simple fried chicken biscuit and it was spot on. Fair prices, quick service and ample space if you choose to eat in vs take out.

Heather C.

Yelp
Great food! Great prices! Friendly Staff! Interesting artwork! Looking forward to going back and trying new items!

Marvis J.

Yelp
Tragically understaffed. Food is decent, but order from Uber eats. If you walk in and order you'll wait an hour for a simple breakfast biscuit.

Joseph M.

Yelp
2024 10 28 06:13 Hotel California of Food. It's not just cause we're tired EMTs doing early runs, it's not just cause it's technically on the way back to station & it's not just cause this is a great local business either. This place is perfectly temperature'd for every time of day & time of year; along with good music playlists. The staff is always happy to see customers, kitchen, receptionist, lead chef (not just a cook) always make you feel welcome. The food is never anything but delicious. Biscuits, fluffy flavorful favorited forever. Coffee, black & steamy. Chicken, perfectly placed poultry. Salmon, served savory slightly spicy superbly splendid. Worst part of the day is leaving a great breakfast joint.

Yelp
Great service and food was delicious. Biscuits are huge and portions are generous. Really liked the friendly service and manager let me try peach cobbler they were serving for lunch.

Daniel M.

Yelp
I didn't get the best biscuit. I got turkey sausage with cheese and it smell bad and taste sour. I'm 200lb 23 year old guy. I can eat a lot of food and don't get stomach pain other than Taco Bell. That cook fk my stomach up also my gf too
google avatar

Yelp
Food never disappoints. Don't be discouraged but the gas station location. A great breakfast meal, tastes home cooked and has a great price. Service is sometimes slow but the food is always fresh. Will definitely continue coming here
google avatar

Patricia D.

Yelp
Ordered 12 biscuits to take to work this morning. I've often enjoyed their biscuits on Saturday when I get up in time for breakfast, but never such a large quantity. They were done at 5:45 exactly when I needed them. Several of my co-workers asked from where I got the biscuits because they were delicious. It's nice to have a great breakfast location so close to my home.
google avatar

Trena S.

Yelp
Everything was delicious. The biscuits felt like they were made by grandma. I had the salmon patty it was a little bit spicy for my liking. I picked up my food so I didn't get a feel of the place but overall it seemed clean. Great place if you want to grab some breakfast and go.
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Great stop here, if you like salmon patties, Yes, the collards are on point, tried the tater salad, all of this was very good. Noticed they have a biscuit drive thru window, I will be back next week, customer breakfast run

Kay J.

Yelp
I was torn between 3 and 4 stars for this restaurant. Nothing was bad but I wasn't blown away by the food either. I ordered the sausage, egg and grits bowl. Overall, the food didn't taste any better than what I make myself at home. This isn't a negative for the restaurant but when I go out to eat, I expect something more complex than what I can whip up in the kitchen in 15 minutes. The grits were okay once I added salt. The sausage patties had a nice spicy kick to them. The eggs were just regular scrambled eggs with nothing special. The young lady at the service counter was friendly and the space is clean and welcoming. My order came out pretty quickly. This is why I settled on 4 stars instead of 3. I'd give this place another try in the future but order something different.

Faith M.

Yelp
Great food! The owner came out to check on all the tables multiple times. Highly recommend!

Bennett D.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. The owner Jeremy is one stellar cat. He is one very patient and understanding individual, who takes pride with the utmost passion to provide a solid experience. Our automotive shop orders breakfast from these guys probably 3 times a week. Great quality food, and I would like to say it's even better quality service, but there's nothing they could do better on either side. Very punctual and eager to make sure they provide the best experience they can. 7 stars and 3 thumbs up!!
google avatar

John J.

Yelp
Great home made breakfast. Quick service and kind employees. Ordered Biscuit and Sausage Gravy and the cheesy grits bowl with Bacon.

Joy H.

Yelp
I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this local restaurant today. The food was fresh, hot, and seasoned well. Very nice atmosphere, it is clean and well maintained. The staff was welcoming and accommodating. There was a lot of foot traffic however, we did not experience any long waits, which sometimes happens because everything is cooked to order‼ The owner thanked us for coming in, and it was genuine. . . Love that WE are happy to support our local businesses, and we will definitely be back‼

Mike A.

Yelp
I recommend SOAB for breakfast. I try to visit once a week; a good variety of great biscuits...you must try the spam & egg, spicy chicken and steak dipped biscuits! Other good breakfast plate choices too! Also, friendly and professional staff; even the owner, Jay takes the time to come out and chat regularly, giving SOAB the atmosphere of a small-town cafe!

Daniel P.

Yelp
Great spot ,great food love the biscuits. Come here all the time never had any complaints.......................................

Suzzette M.

Yelp
The food was subpar. The prices doesn't match the quality of the food. I will not be back. The only good thing is the food is made to order.

Bill M.

Yelp
I visited Son of a Biscuits today and had to get a refund because the wait was ridiculously long. I understand patience, but this was 30 plus minutes of waiting. It was a carry out order that should have been no more than 15 minutes. This is my thought if you do not have the band width to take online orders and in house orders you should take care of your customers that took the time to visit your establishment. You have the power to temporarily suspend online orders. My question is why a manager didn't make an executive decision on the matter. Extremely disappointing. We overheard customers complaining about there 45-minute wait in addition to food delivery persons walking out due to extremely long waiting periods. I wish this company the best, but I do not know if I will revisit.
