Son of a Sailor Seafood

Google
When the original restaurant we had planned to eat at was far too crowded, we ended up at Son of a Sailor Seafood because of their high google star rating. And wow are we glad we did! We enjoyed it immensely - the shrimp cocktail was beautifully simple, it was fresh and delicious! The Crab Bites were outstanding: the batter and meat were amazing, and their signature sauce added the perfect touch. We enjoyed the open seating patio. It was definitely a little pricey, but even so we’re confident we will be back any time we are in Avalon or surrounding towns!

Do yourself and them a favor and call ahead to put your order in (plus you can make sure they’re open if it’s the shoulder season)! They’ll tell you when to come in and it’s so easy to pay and tip and find a nice table outside. We came in September— everything was amazing. Broiled shrimp and scallops combo and a hot lobster roll blew us away with the quality, everything was perfectly cooked, and tasted so fresh and delicious. Friendly service, they came and checked on us outside and brought our food out when it was ready.

Google
Had 2 lobster rolls. Probably a pound of lobster each roll. The biggest lobster rolls I’ve ever seen. And I’ve had a lot of lobster rolls. From up and down the east coast, this place had the biggest. Luke’s lobster in NYC was the top slot in my opinion but this joint surpasses that with extra lobster meat. So good. A pound of lobster per roll? I don’t know if that’s what they do, but my stomach felt like that.

Google
No frills takeout family run seafood shack with some small outside seating. Best lobster roll in Jersey just as good as anywhere in New England. Ow ers really take pride in bringing the best ingredients.

Google
This seafood spot was recommended to us by a local. The food is good, but be warned this spot requires ordering ahead of time. If you are looking for that New England seafood m, this spot is an okay spot but not exactly the same.

Google
BEST Lobster roll around. If I did not know better I would have thought I was in Maine. This seafood store in Avalon NJ has the freshest assortment of seafood around. The owner was very friendly and answered all our questions. It was a tough choice Lobster Roll or Crab Cake. We opted for the toasted lobster roll sandwich with butter. There had to be 1 pound of fresh lobster meat that overflowed our roll. What a great experience and we will be back!

Nicholas W.

Google
Absolutely loved Son of a Sailor! The lobster rolls are out of this world—loaded, fresh, and buttery. And the fries? Unreal. Crispy, golden perfection. A must-stop spot at the shore!

Google
Our visit turned out to be their last night of the season. Our dinners were delicious and especially fresh seafood. We had the linguine with crabmeat and steamed little neck clams. I will definitely go back.

Yelp
I will say, I did enjoy my food. I got steamed clams in garlic / butter and the blackened mahi-mahi fish tacos. They were cooked perfectly! Very delicious. For the mahi-mahi fish tacos I did wish that they listed what was inside of them on the menu. For reference, it included a little bit of slaw, red onions + tomatoes diced up with an orange sauce that was a bit spicy. There was also a green crema at the bottom of the tortilla shell. Overall, it was good. However the wait seemed extensively long & the staff was not very attentive. I waited 30+ minutes at my table before I went inside to ask for everything to be boxed up to take home. The outside tables could also be cleaned a bit better - my table was a bit dirty with leftovers on it.

Yelp
My husband and I just ate here. We like getting a hand full of appetizers and splitting. It was sooo good!! We got crab fingers, clams casino, crab bites, crab soup, bam bam shrimp, and soft shell crab sandwich (on special). The crab soup was the best I ever had. Full of meat in each bite. We will definitely be going back. It is outside seating after you order your food. There are some shaded spots.

Yelp
My two boys, my wife and I ordered dinner from here at 5:30 tonight and they said it would be ready around 7:15 but it wasn't ready until 7:45. I get the wait because it's summer. But after driving back home we were underwhelmed by the food. Three of us ordered old bay fries but only one person got them. My wife and I got sandwiches with no toppings. Any other place we order sandwiches from they ask if you want lettuce, tomato, etc. Disappointing because we were all so hungry and it was $80. Lesson learned.

Raksha M.

Yelp
Man, this place is GOOD. They really cram a lot of lobster in their lobster rolls and it's perfect. Their combos are great too. Worth every penny.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! The Old Bay fries were the best we've ever had--crispy, flavorful, and addicting. The warm lobster roll, served on perfectly toasted bread, was buttery and packed with tender lobster. We also loved the Bam Bam spicy shrimp--just the right amount of heat and flavor. The crab cakes were full of real crab and cooked to perfection, and the broiled flounder and scallops were fresh and beautifully seasoned. We truly loved every bite!

Yelp
The wait was surprisingly long considering the restaurant wasn't busy, maybe the staff was on a break or something, but it still felt odd. We ordered the pasta with shrimp and the lobster roll. Unfortunately, I had a terrible experience with the food. My body rejected it almost immediately, and I had a miserable night afterward. I've seen a few other reviews mentioning similar issues. I don't have any food allergies, so I'm not sure if it was poor food handling or just bad luck, but it left me very concerned. We waited about 45 minutes for our food, which seemed excessive given the lack of a crowd (especially since the nearby pizza place was much busier and moving faster). The calamari appetizer was great, but I'm not sure if it, or the shrimp, was what caused my stomach problems. Either way, for seafood, I wouldn't recommend this spot. There are likely other places that handle their food better.

Yelp
The food was good! We enjoyed sitting at the outdoor tables. It was solid beach seafood fare. Clean and well run.
google avatar

Mara M.

Yelp
Reallyyyy solid lobster roll spot! Got ours hot and buttered with fries and really enjoyed everything. Service was quick but food itself took a while so keep in mind you may have a 20+ min wait. Plenty of outdoor seating and cute but minimal indoor area. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
The hot lobster roll lives up to its hype-- overflowing with claw meat in a buttery toasty brioche bun and super crispy fries.
google avatar

Emma C.

Yelp
A generous portion of fresh lobster meat doused in melted butter folded inside a warm, toasted bun and served with a side of crispy old bay fries. Perfect dinner at the shore.

Yelp
First time in this town so I checked Yelp for a review and it did not disappoint. This takeout place has a cute little spot outside on a patio if you like to eat there. You order and pay inside and they bring your meal to you. I ordered the crab cake dinner which had a little spicy kick to it, barely any fillers. It was one of the best I have ever had. Hubby had the grilled ahi tuna served rare, which he also enjoyed! We ate on the patio and since it is BYOB we brought wine and a corkscrew.

Yelp
I called ahead of time, about two hours ahead of time, and ordered for pick up at 5:30pm. I arrived at 5:30 paid, and was told food would be out in a minute. The food did not come up for another 20+ minutes, so clearly it wasn't ready. I just wish the team at the counter had been forthcoming about the wait and i could have walked around outside. I asked after 15 minutes of standing there what was going on and was given a "we are just running a bit behind". I asked why i wasn't told that at 5:30 when i walked up and they said they didn't know when the food would really be ready. great... This is the second time I've tried Son of a Sailor, and both times pick up didn't go smoothly. The food was bad to ok. The cheese burger was burnt and wasn't edible, if we weren't trying to get on the road to leave the shore would have taken it back. The crab cakes and mahi mahi sandwich were fine but nothing special. Next time I'll stick to Back Bay in Stone Harber

Bonnie K.

Yelp
The takeout took a lot longer than 1.25 hrs they told us. Service was not good - the cook sneered at us for asking when the food might be ready. The fries were really good but blackened flounder, fish tacos and crab cake were 3/10 at most.

Ricardo F.

Yelp
Their lobster roll is the best in the Jersey Shore! Super tasty and an unbeatable amount of lobster meet, you have to try it!
google avatar

Meg S.

Yelp
Took an hour and 15 minutes on a Monday night for a $25 salad, chicken Alfredo with no taste, a flounder sandwich, and three kids meals. They didn't put the order in clearly but then didn't admit it, just kept saying it would be another minute. We literally all just remarked "I hate when I eat dinner and don't feel full." Avoid.
google avatar

Lexie M.

Yelp
Delicious hot lobster rolls!! Prices are reasonable for down the shore as well. Lobster rolls were stuffed with fresh meat! So delicious! It's a super casual place and the employees definitely know what they're doing. Can't wait to return!

Samantha S.

Yelp
If you like tons of their red paprika old bay house seasoning or whatever it is on every single piece of seafood and I mean coated with tons of it then you may like it. Not a fan.

Ashley N.

Yelp
Ordered takeout and was stunned at the huge size of the lobster roll and fish sandwich! Both were so good, lobster roll had so much meat it was hard to finish. Highly recommend, can't wait to come back!

Jordan S.

Yelp
very good! little expensive but down the shore so it makes sense!! buffalo shrimp were fantastic!! also got their cream of crab soup which was delicious!! they were a little slow but it's the start of the season so all good and everyone was nice!! outdoor dining was adorable!!
google avatar

Suzie C.

Yelp
The ambiance is cute in Avalon, it's a takeout spot with picnic tables. We loved that the seafood is fresh but really does lack flavor. The best was the cream of crab soup, but just think a chef can help make the food tastier.
google avatar

Seth R.

Yelp
There's a reason this takeout place gets five stars. It is that good. My entire family enjoyed their meal. Even after having to wait about an hour for our food. Make sure you order early. Lesson learned. Get the cream of crab soup it is the best I've ever had. No joke.

Brad F.

Yelp
This was one of the best lobster rolls I've had outside of NE. Highly recommend. Bourbon salmon was the best my family member has had before.

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Best lobster roll ever - I've tried every place in the vicinity and I will never eat another lobster roll at the Jersey shore unless it's Son of a Sailors! The absolute best lobster roll- EVER!

Jason D.

Yelp
These guys know what they are doing! Either take out or sit down. Super casual! A must do when your in Avalon.

Marlon W.

Yelp
So delicious lobster roll! The staff was so Warm and inviting! The beach life with the best seafood shop can't go wrong

Mags M.

Yelp
We ordered and ate on the patio there. At 5:30pm, they were getting takeout orders with a 90 min wait! But if you eat there the food is faster (still waited about 40 min for our food). Lobster roll is great as are the fresh oysters.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
I've been hearing buzz about this place all summer, and finally got a chance to sample their food at the recent Seafood Festival in Avalon. Tasty crabcake sandwiches, fish tacos and lobster rolls were available, but I decided to try their lobster bisque. This was worth the wait. Chunks of lobster in a creamy, divine bisque. I definitely could have kicked the paper cup clean. Looking forward to trying out more of their dishes soon!

Yelp
We've been coming to Stone Harbor for years. Recently we have been disappointed with the lack of decent restaurants. Thankfully, Avalon is literally minutes away, which is how we discovered Son of a Sailor. We had the lobster roll, which is nothing short of perfection, & the fried scallops. The scallops melt in your mouth & leave you wanting more after each bite. We highly recommend his establishment. Excellent food, prompt service & friendly staff. Make sure to stop by on your next visit!

Luanne L.

Yelp
We found this gem while driving through Avalon on the way to Cape May. The service was the of the friendly and accommodating sort that only comes with local ownership. The seafood is the freshest, and best of all -- their exquisite crab cakes. I've grow accustomed to the usual grey, breading -filled patties that pass as crab cakes, but, I decided to take a chance. I was rewarded with the freshest, most flavorful, crab cakes-- done to a perfect crispness on the outside, nothing but sweet, flavorful crabmeat on the inside. Everything else we ordered was fresh and delicious served in a perfect "beachy" atmosphere that adds to the experience. Well worth the trip!

dirk d.

Yelp
Great food served hot in the take out containers when we got it home. Calamari home run as were the fried scallop dinner.

Ann F.

Yelp
Tried to order dinner for several people last night. Online ordering was not an option and no one answered the phone. So we drove up to order in person. There was one person working and one person in line ahead of us. He was told his order would be ready in an hour. What????? Drive up to Oceanside and our order was ready in 15-20 minutes. It was delicious. If son of a sailor is an offshoot of Sylvester's, Sylvester is rolling in his grave. Never again.

Yelp
Went for lunch after the beach and I was not disappointed. The fried combo was delicious and so much food it will also be dinner . Very nice staff too!
google avatar

Melissa D.

Yelp
Everything we got was delicious! Standouts were the lobster bisque, the hot lobster roll, and the fish tacos. Members of our party also got the broiled flounder and a seafood linguine and both were reported to be delicious as well! All around, a great addition to the island food options!

Rebecca M.

Yelp
HANDS DOWN, without a doubt. BEST lobster roll on Seven Mile Island. Incredible seafood restaurant! Consistent and never disappoints.

Vanessa C.

Yelp
A bit steep in price but the seafood is excellent! We had the fried shrimp and fried scallop baskets. No big deal, right? Well, they actually *were* a BFD. The batter was thick and crispy and not greasy, well-seasoned but didn't detract from the natural succulence of the shellfish. Portions were large and served with fries and coleslaw (I'm not a slaw person anyway, but it was too vinegary for me). I ordered take out and customer service was a-ok. Hope to dine in next time we're in Avalon!

Samantha S.

Yelp
Did a take out order from here. Delicious and fresh fish and they were super accommodating with my dairy allergy. prepared my dish separately with olive oil instead of butter to ensure no cross contamination. Got the broiled flounder with veggies and fries and my husband got the hot lobster roll with fries. Great portion sizes too. Would definitely go here again!

Deb R.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch for a lobster roll and a crab cake sandwich. Both were delicious. Can eat outside or take home.

Yelp
This hidden-in-plain-view gem should be first on your list of next to try. Just go; you'll be back! Circle Pizza next door is on our regular list (especially given the kids) but this was a real treat. Had the hot lobster roll because it was cold outside. OMG. SO GOOD. Beautiful and plentiful lobster, melted butter on the side and plentiful yummy crinkle cut fries to top it off. We ordered takeout from here over the summer as well, so I'm late writing this review. Five stars then and now. Consistency counts, especially in a new restaurant like this one.

Diane B.

Yelp
We're old timers who've been visiting the Jersey Shore since the 1960s. For years, we enjoyed Busch's in Sea Isle and Sylvester's in Avalon. Both restaurants closed over the past couple of years, so we've been on the hunt for a new place. This is it! We had dinner there 3 times over 2 weeks! So good! Great fried seafood platters with local flounder, jumbo shrimp and scallops. Tasty cole slaw and crispy French fries. Mostly for takeout but we went on the later side to grab an outdoor table (limited outdoor seating sharing space with Circle Pizza). Also a seafood market if you're up for cooking.

Heather G.

Yelp
Excellent! The lobster bisque, warm lobster roll and flounder sandwich get 5 stars. Great spot for takeout, clean and decorated really cute too. We will definitely be back and soon!

Michelle D.

Yelp
The crab cakes and cream of crab soup were so good we came back the next night for more! Very friendly staff and very convenient takeout.

Judy M.

Yelp
We had the fish and chips and the broiled shrimp/scallops platter- both were amazing! Very generous portions. We will definitely be returning soon!

Christine K.

Yelp
Ordered lobster rolls 1st day in Avalon. They were excellent! Tried one elsewhere.....didn't compare. The amount of lobster at SOAS was more than plentiful. Came back 2 days later with my friend. She agreed.....absolutely delicious. The accompanying roll was flavorful and the zucchini side was perfect. Staff were very friendly and I would gladly stand outside with a placard saying, " best lobster rolls at the shore." Continued success!
