The 21 Best Hotels in Boston

"It takes a lot to open a boutique hotel during a pandemic but 907 Main has managed to pull it off and make it look easy. From the outside, you see a gorgeously resorted 1867 brick facade. Step inside, however, and the custom furniture and sleek, modern decor captures all the energy that makes Central Square one of Cambridge's most cherished and exciting neighborhoods. Every single room has a king bed with plush Simmons 13-inch pillow tops, so you can feel free to stretch out, toss and turn all night long. Opened in Spring 2021, rooftop Blue Owl is one of the only rooftop bars in this part of town and a guaranteed hot spot." - Shannon McMahon, Todd Plummer

Sonder 907 Main

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? It takes a lot to open a boutique hotel during a pandemic but 907 Main has managed to pull it off and make it look easy. From the outside, you see a gorgeously-resorted 1867 brick facade. Step inside, however, and the custom furniture and sleek, modern decor captures all the energy that makes this one of Cambridge's most cherished and exciting neighborhoods. Just a few steps from check-in is a massive, 3,000 square-foot enclosed courtyard. When you're here, you can't help but feel relaxed and removed from the hustle and bustle just outside the hotel's front doors. What's the backstory? The building has a long history as an anchor in the landscape of Central Square, whether that was as commercial space in the 1870's, townhomes at the turn of the century, or more recently as office spaces. It's part of an area known as "Confectioner's Row," a stretch of Cambridge formerly home to factories for Necco wafers, Nabisco cookies, Junior Mints and Tootsie Rolls. Today, the building is reborn as a boutique hotel under the management of Hay Creek Hotels and Resorts, known for their smaller properties concentrated in the New England area. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? The good news is that every single room has a king bed with plush Simmons 13-inch pillowtops, so you can feel free to stretch out, toss and turn all night long. For real - the beds are amazing. The rooms have a sleek, contemporary feel which is a nice contrast to the building's historic side - and touches like custom banquettes, 55-inch TV's, and Bluetooth alarm clock radios are a nice touch. If it were up to us, we'd choose one of the bay window rooms, which are flooded with natural light and give great views onto the streets below. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Free, fast Wi-Fi. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? Chef Justin Urso leads the way at The Dial on the hotel's ground floor, open for dinner and brunch. We didn't have a single bad bite from this menu, but the Small Plates are where Urso really shines, combining international flavors with New England ingredients: like crispy brussels sprouts with chili-lime glaze, jerk quail with a beautifully fresh jicama slaw, roasted carrot and beet salad with sumac yogurt and cashew dukkah, and a sweet potato borek with brown butter urfa tomato sauce. The flavors are out of this world. It's also worth noting there is an abundance of vegetarian and gluten-free options on the menu. For Spring 2021, the hotel will debut its rooftop Blue Owl terrace, which as one of the only rooftop bars in this part of Cambridge will undoubtedly become an instant hotspot. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? The hotel is the neighborhood. It's been a seamless part of Central Square's retail, residential and commercial communities since it the 19th century. Is there anything you'd change? I wish the rooftop terrace would have opened before winter. But we already got a bumping new hotel and a fantastic restaurant so maybe it's best not to get too greedy. Any other hotel features worth noting? To really make the most of the current pandemic situation, 907 Main is offering a "micro weddings" package for ten guests or less. Each celebration comes with a ceremony on the street-level, outdoor patio at The Dial or on the open-air roof deck, as well as a reception in the spacious two-bedroom Penthouse Suite. Bottom line: Why are we booking at 907 Main? For the price, and the location and the design, you won't find a better deal in Cambridge." - Todd Plummer

Rooms were small but very cute and had a nice location with a great view of the streets. Staff is extremely nice and willing to help; however, we had asked for blankets and pillows that never arrived and sheets that arrived 2 days later. Once asked, the staff immediately fulfilled our requests for towels. The fitted sheets on the bed continuously came off throughout the night and left my family sleeping on the disgusting mattress pad. The bathroom is fine and looks clean for the most part but the shower is small and water easily spills onto the floor outside because of the small shower curtain. The shower head has great water pressure but very inconsistently. The 2 restaurants in the building, while having excellent food, are the loudest things imaginable. Up until 11 o clock at night and nonstop throughout the upstairs restaurant would be moving chairs or playing loud music. The hotel is at a nice location about a 20 minute walk from Harvard with many restaurants, bus stops, and subway entrances nearby.

Our experience at this hotel was very disappointing, especially considering how expensive it is. From the start, the check-in was extremely late for a hotel, and none of the staff had the courtesy to help us with our luggage. There are no restrooms in the lobby, which is very inconvenient for guests waiting for their room. In our room, the toilet wasn’t working properly. On Saturday around 5 PM, a loud party started in the restaurant (which is adjacent to the rooms) and didn’t stop until 11 PM. We complained, along with at least 10 other guests, but the staff offered no solution until we mentioned we were staying for a month. They finally moved us to another room on Thursday. In the new room, the noise was reduced, but the toilet made a loud sound every time we flushed. The water pressure in the bathtub was very low, and it wasn’t clear which knob controlled hot or cold water. This is not a traditional hotel – they charge extra for things like changing the sheets or cleaning the room. There was a microwave and shared items like cups and plates, but they were often missing and never restocked. After midnight, the only way to enter the hotel is with a code, but for them, "midnight" means 10 AM, which is absurd. Communication with the hotel is basically nonexistent – if you need anything, you have to call and wait around 30 minutes. The reception staff always tells you to call instead of helping directly, and they take no responsibility. They are also very rude – they don’t greet guests when entering or leaving. I understand they might be underpaid, but that’s no excuse for treating guests poorly. In short, we wouldn’t return and do not recommend this place if you're looking for a comfortable, professional, and hospitable stay.

I haven't gone to the hotel yet, but it's been a NIGHTMARE dealing with Sonder to change the dates of my reservation. They are in the middle of a switchover to Marriott because they were bought by them so the customer service right now is a nightmarish mess. I was on hold on the phone for over four hours trying to get through to a human-- I eventually gave up. I kept trying on other days and managed finally to reach a human after more holding. She said that instead of changing dates, given the computer issues with the switchover, it would be easier to cancel the original reservation and gave me credits to use at a later date; the problem though was that I had to call in to make the reservation with credits (I couldn't book it online). So I called again--more waiting on hold. I was finally able to reach someone and booked the new date using my credits. But today I learned that Marriott/Sonder had also charged my credit card!! So I have been charged twice for a room I have not even gone to. I had even waited on line with the last customer service agent to make sure that I would be charged only with my Sonder credits; she had told me that the switchover in computer systems had been a nightmare in which many customers were being charged twice. So here I am on hold YET AGAIN waiting for a Sonder/Marriott customer service person overseas to sort this mess out for me.I have literally wasted days of my life dealing with this reservation. I would never stay at a Sonder ever again!!

I was exceptionally disappointed by Sonder. This was my first experience with this brand, and I will likely never try it again. The rooms were outfitted like a low-budget hotel, while the price was nearly double surrounding hotels. I was surprised by the complicated check-in and guest registration process (all online). It’s supposed to be linked to Marriott, but there were many failures in the integration. The entire property needed some work. Peeling wallpaper, leaky toilets, broken A/C. It’s clear there’s no one walking this property regularly. I stayed just below the restaurant, which led to a noisy and late night just prior to a 5am flight, not exactly relaxing. Overall, the Sonder brand appears to be trying for a high-end chic experience with an Air BnB check-in style. It hits the frustrations of Air BnB, and misses the chic target entirely. I will not return to this brand.

I was nervous about my stay based on reviews, but I really enjoyed it overall though I do think the price is steep for the size of the rooms and the hotel amenities. I'd stay again if the price was lower. Location is excellent and very close to transit lines, but also within walking distance to many major Cambridge attractions. Fantastic selection of restaurants and stores in the surrounding area. Rooms were very clean and comfortable though might be small for more than one person or if you have large luggage. Front desk does offer luggage storage until check-in despite the app saying that they do not, would love to see this info corrected. I was on the 4th floor and even on a Friday night there was minimal noise from the rooftop bar aside from a few chairs being moved. I really appreciated the microwave/water dispenser/extra cutlery/toiletries in the hallway! Worth noting that you were only allowed to take one of any item and that you were otherwise expected to purchase your own (toilet paper included) - this reads as cheap/stingy and the daily rate for this hotel isn't particularly low or affordable to warrant this. Room included shampoo/conditioner/soap/hair dryer and a fridge. Easy to connect the TV to your phone for entertainment. Rooms don't allow you to set the temperature below 20C. Shower curtain was flimsy and the plumbing sometimes squeaked loudly after using the sink or flushing the toilet. The app leaves a lot to be desired in terms of the available information about the hotel and the chat help option, it takes a long time for someone to respond and the agents don't always know what they're doing. I'm not someone who cares for a lot of bells and whistles in my hotels, and this place suited my needs really well. I was here for work and did not cover the cost of my stay. I had a great experience but if I was paying out of pocket I'm not sure I'd choose to stay here again solely based on the price. If the rate was more reasonable based on the available amenities and level of service I'd be happy to stay again.

There was no problem with the room per se, other than it wasn't the room I booked. I booked my reservation in April for a trip in June. I reserved a room with 2 queen sized beds for me and my 2 teenage sons. The day before our trip, they informed me my room was unavailable. They offered two rooms with a king size bed in each room instead, so we couldn't all share a room. Upon arrival, the clerk told me to book the second room, I'd need to cancel my reservation and re-book my room on the Expedia website, then I would be reimbursed for the second room. He couldn't guarantee that the rooms would be adjoining or even on the same floor. My boys are good boys but they're also teenagers. No way was I leaving them to their own devices in an unfamiliar city. The hotel staff was no help at all, so we all made due on one king sized bed. I'd go back to Boston in a heartbeat but I'd definitely stay somewhere else.

I would give no stars if I could. Before we even checked in they tried to charge me almost $100 extra for a 'room fee' that I called, texted and emailed them regarding, which turned out to be a bogus mistake no one could explain to me. The next day I get a $150 charge for amenities fee-what amenities? There's nothing here, no breakfast, despite their two restaurants, no water in the room, nothing. The bed is awful, the sheets come off constantly, the mattress is a queen on a king frame and we hurt ourselves getting out of the bed almost every time. There's about six inches of empty space between the mattress and the end of the fram of each side. It's bizarre. The shower gets water everywhere and has no hot or cold water indicator. There is pretty much no hotel staff at all. This place is outrageous. It is also unbearably loud. There is a restaurant on the ground floor, another on the roof and a busy street outside. There was a wedding until 12am last night and then loud live music started at 8:30 am this morning for a brunch. We can hear every conversation our neighbors have, in the rooms nearby and in the hallway. Stay at the Meridian if you can. I wish I could get my money back.

We booked this hotel months in advance. When we got there they gave us the wrong room and were sold out so we had to find a new place to stay. (There are 4 of us, they gave us a 2 person room) It was actually a blessing in disguise. We ended up at a Hilton in Brookline. The staff at Sonder are horribly rude. The woman at the front desk, between eye rolls and sighs was very put out that she had to check to see if there was availability elsewhere. The check-in process was also needlessly complicated, having me scan my id and take a selfie before you can get into your room. I thought maybe they didn’t have staff at the desk.. but they do. Just nobody helpful :) The room was SO small. It fit the king sized bed only. Even our suitcases were squeezed in there. We ended up pretty happy that they messed up our reservation so we could find a better place to stay.

Yelp
The room and staff are great. However, this hotel is right across the street from the fire department and a very busy town square. There is so much street noise to include mentally ill people yelling and cars honking as they (yes more than one) walk into traffic, sirens, people playing music on loud speakers, air planes landing at the near by airport, drunk folks hooting on the street after the clubs let out, and the list goes on. They really need to invest in sound proofing. This is the loudest place I've ever stayed and it is loud all night long. I've lived in bustling cities and had better sound proofing in my flat. I've gotten no sleep or work done on this work trip. I'm exhausted. Additionally, housekeeping hasn't been by to empty the bin in 3 days. I don't recommend.
