Sonder Review - Kingston - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"To say there’s a lot going on at Sonder would be a massive understatement. The dark dining room walls occasionally glow with light from disco balls and taper candles, and an ornate mirror with LED strip lights in the bathroom gives you a full-body view of yourself on the can. It can be a bit overwhelming at times, but you’ll want to stick around for the food. The jammy pickled eggs topped with fried shallots are the perfect little bite, and you’ll find yourself scheduling another trip Upstate just to order the vinegar-marinated roast chicken again. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but if you’re visiting during tomato season and don’t order the tomato vin with garlic cream cheese, you may want to reconsider your life choices." - Anne Cruz

Convenient location and access to a kitchen and in-suite laundry was amazing, which made the stay worthwhile. Downsides: the internet was painfully slow making it impossible to do any work or even browse the internet, having to use my phone as a hotspot for my 3-night stay. Internet issues also made the Roku stall, and would cause low resolution. I did reach out to Sonder support about it but this issue was never resolved. I was expecting to be able to store my luggage prior to check in, however that wasn’t available until my actual check in time unlike my stay at Sonder the Slate, which I enjoyed much more last year. Also, cleaning crew left a dirty cloth in the bathroom and found a hair on a towel.

Terrible experience. The room was dirty when we arrived and the crib that we asked for several times was missing. There was dust under and behind the bed and sofa that has been clearly accumulating for weeks. We found hair (multiple) under the mattress and on the sofa bed fitted sheet, which I don’t think was replaced since the previous guests. This is a small building with ~6 rooms on the second floor (accessible only by stairs) and a convenience store on the ground floor. Location is convenient but expect to see / hear homeless people at night. It can also be loud since you are on the second floor next to a busy street. The apartment was modern but the furniture and finishes are on the cheaper side and already feel dated. On the positive side, Sonder was able to send a cleaning lady to fix the issue the next day and we were able to get a crib after two attempts (first one they brought was broken).

Quiet, clean, and in a great location! The bed is on the firmer side, and even with the A/C on, we found it pretty hot while trying to sleep. I suspect that’s because the thermostat for the entire apartment is in the living room, so it’s not able to gauge the bedroom temperature properly. Despite that, we really enjoyed our stay and would happily stay again!

The apartment was very well equipped, although some drawers in the bedrooms would have been helpful. Comfortable beds, great kitchen. Excellent location. Ideal for St Patrick's subway. 25 min walk to CN Tower. We had a couple of issues (a leak from the roof in the corridor outside the apartment and no hot water one morning) caused by very heavy rain/storm. Both issues were dealt with promptly. Communication with Sonder was fast.

Great location and able to walk to many sites of interest. Gorgeous apartment and very well equipped - a few hooks and shelves in the bedrooms would be useful. Only negatives, The apartment was very hot at night (Toronto was having a mini heatwave in May) and the noise from the street was an issue so I felt a bit sleep deprived.

Convenient location to my meetings. Good size unit and well-stocked amenities. Comfortable beds. Convenient to the subway. The downside is that the building is practically a median in the road, so road noise is very persistent and loud. There were also a few people who needed mental health and housing support camped near this location, so just be careful.

I am now a Sonder convert due to my great experience at The Elm when I was visiting Toronto recently. (1) Location was fantastic! Easy access to the TTC. Safe and quiet neighborhood. And very close to restaurants and cafes in Baldwin Village. (2) I stayed in a one-bedroom apartment which was very well appointed. Lush queen-sized bed and very comfortable couch. A separate dining area with a full-sized kitchen larger than my friends' kitchens who live in the city. (3) I stayed here for a week, and the total price was much cheaper compared to nearby hotels and many AirBnb apartments nearby. The cheaper ones certainly didn't look and feel as fantastic as my unit at The Elm.

Very easy to book, check in and check out. Easy to use app, and really nice small apartment with all the necessary utilities.
