Nice to see a second location of Kin Kao, this one in our neighhourbood, with a different menu. Kin Kao is a special treat, an upscale Thai experience, with a small but well-curated menu, with plenty of vegan options. We came on a Monday evening and needed a reservation for our preference of 6:30 (there was only bar seating but that was very comfortable). They have a nice (and normally priced) cocktail menu ($14 plus tax per drink), which pleased the lady; she really enjoyed her "The Emerald" cocktail, a tequila and green peppercorn-based cocktail. For food, we ordered:
-Pomelo salad ($22; made vegan without fish sauce) - I'd never tried pomelo before. The texture is like grapefruit, but perhaps not as bitter - either that or they just add enough sugar to balance the bitterness. Really beautifully textured, spiced and garnished (with shallots and shredded coconut). They also include 3 leaves that can be good for making a little wrap with some of the pomelo. Overpriced (as most dishes here are), but wonderfully curated, tasty, and amply portioned. My only minor complaint on this dish is that's a tad overly sweet. 4.5/5
-Massaman curry ($30, not a typo; made vegan) - There aren't many vegan versions of massaman curry available in Vancouver, so we had to try this, and it's a beauty of a dish. Rich, savoury, moderately sweet, and mild-medium spicy curry with cauliflower, okra, potato, lotus root, onion and some bean of sorts. The curry sauce is wonderfully balanced. A generous portion of jasmine rice is served with this. Certainly delicious, but $30 for this? I'm not sure what warrants such a price. 5/5
-Vegetable stifry ($22; default vegan) - I haven't had morning glory (water spinach) since being in SE Asia a couple years ago, and this brings back those wonderful food memories. This was everything I was hoping for in the dish. Wonderfully cooked morning glory, with a salty, dark brown mushroom, chili and garlic sauce, low sweetness, and stir fried with tofu. Honestly, this was the highlight of the meal for me. I can't get enough of this stuff. 5/5
-Pad Thai ($22; made vegan) - This is everything you hope for in a pad Thai: perfectly cooked medium width rice noodles, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts, crushed chili peppers, soft tofu (instead of egg), and coated with a perfectly balanced medium sweet and savoury tamarind sauce. Again, like the pomelo and curry, I could do with a little less sweetness, but this was still wonderful. Large portion and beautifully done. 5/5
The service was likewise top-notch. The dishes came out in a staggered fashion, which was perfect; the server always described what was in each dish when serving; and staff were attentive to refilling water glasses. If you have the $ to splurge for a special occasion, this place is phenomenal. My highest recommendation.
