The Best Jamaican Patties in Miami

"As you probably guessed, Sonia’s specializes in patties—and they’re delicious. This popular shop’s been in the same Kendall location for more than 30 years, and all of the patties are flaky, baked fresh, and made to order. The patties are golden, the beef is spiced right without the scotch bonnet pepper taking the lead over the other ingredients, and the filling is finely minced instead of mixed into a paste. Keep in mind that when they say “spicy” here, they mean it. So, we recommend you sandwich a spicy patty between two pieces of coco bread. It will help balance the heat of the spice and the temperature of the patty that will most likely be steaming hot and fresh out of the oven." - yolande clark jackson

Sonia’s Patties Review - Kendall - Miami - The Infatuation

"As you probably guessed, Sonia’s specializes in patties - and they’re delicious. This popular shop has been in the same Kendall location for more than 30 years, and all of the patties are flaky, baked fresh, and made to order. Unfortunately, due to COVID, the shop only carries three of the dozen patties that it used to: beef (mild and spicy) and curry chicken, and all three are arguably some of the best in Miami. It will help balance the heat of the spice and the temperature of the patty that will most likely be steaming hot fresh out of the oven." - Yolande Clark-Jackson

Google
A very unassuming little place with delicious patties. The menu is small and simple, but the food is delicious! I got a spicy beef and a curry patty- both very delicious. Perfect amount of spice on the beef patty, and lovely curry flavor on the curry flavor. Great crispy, flaky crust with delicious fillings. I’m sad I didnt find this place earlier!

Google
I've been coming here for over ten years, still the best Jamaican patties in Miami. If you're local or an MDC student don't sleep on this little hole in the wall, it's much better than it looks. Also, extremely friendly staff and the hot patties are actually hot!

Google
The customer service is great! The cashier was super kind in answering any questions I had and she even introduced me to coco bread. The coco bread is some of the best bread I’ve ever tasted and the Jamaican Pattie’s come out hot and crispy. The taste of the meat is impeccable, the spicy is really spicy so be careful if you have a weak palate. Over all amazing! Please go here and support a small business that needs and deserves it!

Google
The spicy beef patties are filled with meat, and the crust is flaky, soft, and nice at the same time! The cornbread is so lovely! Love this place!

Google
One of the few places in Miami where you can get a very tasty, freshly baked Jamaican Beef Patty. Most everywhere else is mass produced and resold.

Ana Marie Ferrer

Google
The patties are good however I must say I wonder if the department of health visit this location. The way they keep their restaurant is concerning. Is all this really necessary now in 2024. Very low to little maintenance.

Google
Sonias has the best patties in town. There’s really nothing more to say.

Google
THE BEST PATTIES IN MIAMI!!!!! When my daughter or I go to Georgia to see my Mom, she always requests us to bring her 2 dozen patties every time. I will take that drive every time to get my 2 dozen Spicy Beef and 1 dozen Mild for my granddaughter.

Yelp
I tried five different Jamaican pattie places that are supposed to be the best in Miami. I still have two more to try but so far out of all of them this place has the best, the only thing I do not like is that the Pattie's don't have a traditional Jamaican pattie crust, but even though it doesn't their spices and portion of meat inside the patties are on point. This will be my go to place.

Yelp
One of the few hidden gems in the suburbs, Sonia's Patties has been serving up their signature fresh made to order Patties since 1989. I have been coming to this location since a kid and I can truly say everything is exactly the same, same amount of care they put into baking everything fresh daily, same friendly service, and ofcourse the same secret blend of spices and ingredients that makes these some of the best I (or anyone) has ever had.

Yelp
Very rude employees. Ordered prior to getting there and then I had to wait another 1/2 hr

Yelp
Always good. Love it. I use to go here when I was in high school for lunch and now almost 30 years later I still come here. I have to stop here every time I come to Miami to visit.

Yelp
My family has been taking me to Sonia's patties every since I was a kid, maybe since I was like 8-10 years old. As of now, I am 27 years old (that should say something of coming back every so often over the years) and there's no other place in Florida that has better Jamaican patties than Sonia's! The taste is so fresh, savory, and feels home cooked. The prices have slightly gone up sadly, but with all things today, I'm not surprised. I will pay every nickel and dime to be able to eat these patties. Ordering is super easy, on the phone or in person, it's quick and efficient. It's a little hole in the wall, so you know it's going to be good. The fact they have been operating for about 30 something years and people keep coming back despite the pricing, says something about their food. That it's oh so good!

Yelp
Sonia has never disappointed my West Indian palate all my life. My personal favorite is the ackee and salt fish pattie, with the curry chicken Pattie being my Dad's fav. My kids can't get enough of the beef patties, and we all have soft, chewy coco bread all most every time. If you want a hot, fresh, nice tasting pattie, Sonia's does not disappoint.

Yelp
Never opens on time. never, never ever, never. I've been here three times in the last month and it's never open at 11:00. 11:00 is lunch time, they got to get their s*** together. I'm hungry damn it and me wants me patties. Now that I said that, they have the best damn patties in all of Florida hands down. Recognize. Curry chicken da best mon. Drink a ting. Go get you some, but I recommend going after let's say 12:00 maybe 1:00.

Yelp
Sonia's is absolutely delicious and the patties are HUGE, but I had to knock a star because they do have an issue opening on time. I get that they're a small business, but if you struggle to open consistently at 11, maybe just move your opening time to 12 to not lose potential customers? I showed up at 11:10 and they were closed. I decided to go to the Asian market next door, and by the time I finished, Sonia's was finally opening at 11:30. The patties are made to order, so they're extremely warm and fresh. I opted for the chicken curry while my mans went with the spicy beef with coco bread. Both were absolutely wonderful, and I'd argue Sonia's has the best patties I've tried in South Florida. I'll definitely go back, but perhaps I'll place an online order for pick-up after 12 rather than order in person. This is located in a shopping center, so lots of free parking to be found.

Yelp
Heard of Sonia's Patties for years and had some time to kill so I passed by on Saturday. I ordered two Patties the curry chicken and mild beef. Both were made with the same buttery and crunchy crust, while stuffed with good quality meats. The two fillings were bursting with flavor but the curry chicken had the edge. The staff were super friendly and gave good recommendations. Can't wait to come back and try a different item.

Dave A.

Yelp
Love this place. They aren't exactly traditional Jamaican Pattie's because they don't really have that flaky crust, but nonetheless they are delicious and worth a trip
google avatar

Allison D.

Yelp
I honestly don't know how it has taken me forever to go to this place. Sonia's Patties has been there for as long as i can remember. The place is modest but clean, the menu has about the right amount of things and prices are good. We ordered coco bread and beef patties. The sizes are great, the beef filling is hearty and the dough is soft but nice and crispy on the outside. The coco bread mixed with the empanada is delicious.

Zeke F.

Yelp
Best patties in south Florida. Decades long customer. If and when they have cake available, do yourself a favour and get some.

Yelp
The food is delicious but this place need some serious remodeling. Old extremely old and unwelcoming. It's like they don't even want to entertain you . They don't care what they look like, get ur Pattie's and leave attitude. It's a shame , wonder what that kitchen looks like that's covered by the wall

Harold S.

Yelp
I've been Eating Pattie's at Sonia's for more than 20 years. Her patties are always fresh and full of meat. The best Pattie's I've ever had.

Mercy G.

Yelp
Sonia's Pattie's have been around at least since the 90's. I remember my brother and I going with our friends in between classes at Miami Dade Community College to have lunch at Sonia's patties. We are Hispanics and fell in love with these Jamaican patties. When my husband and I went to Jamaica and tried the Jamaican Pattie's their, we knew we had a gem with Sonia's Patties in Miami. Four decades later, I am so grateful that they still exist and now according to our kids and friends they have the Best Patties. We started our kids with the mild and a Champagne Kola and now they love the spicy beef. The patties are made fresh when you place your order but worth the wait. Currently they have mild beef, spicy beef, and curry chicken. People buy the spicy beef and put it inside the coconut bread. Sonia's also carry coconut bread, rum cakes, and refreshments. Five stars because of great customer service and the Pattie's taste the same after all these years.

Sam S.

Yelp
Best patties in town! We love the mild and spicy. Going to try the curry next time! Super friendly staff!

Yelp
I work overnight so I took a nap before coming here since they open at 11am. I wake up out of my sleep to make it here for the door to be locked at 11:05. I called and they said that they are slammed with orders at 11:05am, so I would have to wait until 12:30pm, for my order. Pretty disappointing to know they have a location store, but have it locked at 11:05, when they are suppose to be open and let you in. Definitely, not driving 25 mins to wait for some "Jamaican Patties" for over an hour and be told, "did you place your order online?" As if I am suppose to know that when you have a location store.

Yelp
My son has been going to Sonia's Patties for quite some time now. Today, as I passed by, I decided to stop and pick up a pattie for myself. Boy was I glad I did! As I entered the small clean space, I was greeted by a kind attentive lady. I noticed that there are no tables or chairs in the shop. This is a place where you order and take the food with you to enjoy elsewhere. I ordered the spicy pattie and loved every single bite. The crust is my absolute favorite, the texture is flaky and crunchy. Just thinking about my experience makes me want to run there and buy another one. The actual pattie is packed with lots of meat. The meat was of good quality, not greasy at all. The spice level was on point. I noticed that they have lobster patties, I will probably be back for those soon!
google avatar

Sonia A.

Yelp
The place is not a sit down restaurant at all. Has no tables, only one bench for sitting while you wait for your delicious parties. This place has been around long enough to be called an "established" business! Which means they are legit! They offer Mild Beef, Spicy Beef Curry Lobster and Curry Chicken patties. They also have delicious coconut bread in which you can wrap your pattie in for extra deliciousness!! They offer a variety of drinks, Jamaican colas, juices, water and more! They now have mini patties you can order by the dozen for your next party! Parking is a public lot and it's not a problem at all. It is located in a strip mall in front of MDC South campus!
google avatar

Karla E.

Yelp
These Jamaican Patties are so delicious!!!! We love coming here and othering a dozen (4 of each flavor). If you want my vote; curry chicken, spicy meat and then meat. Add a coco bread for pure perfection. Small to go place. Don't expect to dine in or sit (although they have a bench to wait on while they bake your patty.) no restrooms.

Suanay H.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with jamaican patties, and they do it right at Sonia's. All baked to order, they have a variety of flavors to choose from but I'm loyal to their spicy beef. Hot tip: make sure to get their coco bread and stuff a jamaican patty inside.

Yelp
Just recently I was telling a friend how much I like Jamaican beef patties, so he tells me "well then you've obviously been to Sonia's Patties". My answer was sadly no. He goes on to tell me it's a must try because they are the best patties in town. I finally made my way to Sonia's today, and my friend , I concur that these are the best patties in town. The menu is very limited, Sonia only makes a few different patties, rum cake, coco bread, and that's about it. She must stick to the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid). I tried the spicy beef patty, a curry chicken patty, and a slice of original rum cake. Both patties were very good, but the spicy Jamaican was by far my favorite. The dough of the patty was just perfect , and the filling was also great, good amount of spice and just overall tasty . One tip I'd give would be to order your patties in advance as they are all made to order (takes about 15 minutes ), and once you do pick them up I'd suggest to wait about 10 minutes before eating as they are extremely hot. Excellent little spot, I'm glad I finally came. It's literally a little hole in the wall with no tables to eat , so just place your order and come by Sonia's to have the best Jamaican beef patty in Miami.

Yelp
Patties are amazingly fresh, and savory. Remains hot for a long time, keeping that warm oven baked goodness until you eat them. Best patties in order of awesomeness are spicy beef, curry chicken, and mild beef. Plantain patty has unusual pink color, island thing I guess, but worth trying. Exotic patties to try when in season are the shrimp, and lobster. Overall, these jamaican patties are beyond compare to anything you can buy at the frozen section of the supermarket. Clerk is very efficient, and clean. She is always polite and professional. I've been ordering from Sonia for years.

Melissa C.

Yelp
Love this place! The patties are super delicious and made to order so they're super hot when you pick them up. Just wish they were open a bit longer. I definitely recommend the spicy patty with the coco bread wrapped around it. So freakin good!
google avatar

Devorah A.

Yelp
Amazing patties but the lady has some serious attitude lol. I just ignore her but her patties are great! There huge and a bit different from the ones you usually see. Filled with tons of meat, almost like a meat patty. Just ignore the attitude
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't had Sonia's in a couple years, but suddenly I decided that I absolutely had to have some patties. I don't think the filling was as good as it used to be- hence the 4 stars instead of 5- but it's still good. The patties are flaky without falling part. I had a plantain and a chicken curry. The chicken curry was slightly more bland than I had hoped. The plantain is more of a dessert patty: very sweet and flavored with cinnamon. My husband had the spicy beef, which he said was his favorite of the 3. Service was good and the place smells great. There is only a bench inside to seat, so it's more of a "to go" place. The patties are made to order and take about 5-15 minutes to make, so calling your order in first might be a good idea if you don't want to wait around. There's actually tons of parking in this little strip mall, and there is a bike rack right outside of Sonia's. Every once in a while they have special lobster patties, which are very rich. They used to have spinach patties years ago, which I hope they decide to bring back one day given that the only vegetarian option is the dessert-like plantain.

Yelp
These people should be ashamed of themselves. I personally don't even think they can be Jamaican, there is no way any Jamaican would serve of this kind of class 'A' crap they claim are Jamaican patty's! Typically I don't eat Jamaican patty's outside of Jamaica because it's just not the same. No patty I've ever had in Canada or the US has ever come close to remotely tasting like the patty's made in Jamaica. Once you've had a "Juici" or a "Tastee" brand patty in Jamaica, it's hard or near impossible to enjoy anything of a lower standard. So when I have a craving for anything Jamaican I usually end up spending time in the kitchen, unless I'm craving patties. Patty's are something I have no idea how to make, and even if I knew how I wouldn't even try because it takes to much time to make. It just so happens I was in south Miami when the patty craving hit me so I dropped by Sonia's patty's only to be the one to be dropped on. After ordering 4 curry chicken patties and trying one, I couldn't believe the crap that I had just put in my mouth. These are by far the worst patty's I've ever eaten in my life. 1)The crust of Jamaican patty is suppose to be flaky, thin and light. This crust was more like a calzone thick and tough. 2)Jamaican patty's are suppose to use Jamaican curry or at least Caribbean curry to make the interior filling. Unbelievably this curry had a grotesque taste...kind of like ajax cleaner, the curry also tasted under cooked. This curry definitely wasn't Jamaican much less of Caribbean origin. 3) The interior filling was not the typical slices and chunks of chicken you would find in a Jamaican patty, it looked like ground chicken and kind of pasty. Ground chicken is typically the grounded parts of the chicken that no one else uses. http://bit.ly/2gtXz5j I threw all 4 pattys into my backyard lake for the fish.

Yelp
I was in South Miami hopping around town when all of a sudden, I felt this intense craving for Jamaican Patties. I had been hearing about Sonia's Patties for a while now and figured I'd finally give it a shot. I am so glad I did! First of all, this place is a Patty shop. Nothing more, no frills, nothing complicated, no deviations from what's on the menu, just patties! Immediately when I walked in, I was flooded with the sweet smell of patty goodness. There were a few other people in the front waiting for their orders so we knew it would be a wait. We also noticed people walking in to pick up orders of a dozen patties. They sell 'em by the dozen! We had to wait about 15 minutes for our food but it was well worth the wait as they are baked fresh to order. We got three spicy beef, 1 mild beef, a coco bread and a Kola Champagne. The patties were piping hot, the crust was delicious and they were packed with meat. From my experience ordering patties from jamaican restaurants, I thought I'd be able to eat about 3, but there was no way I could eat more than 2 as they were so big. The coco bread was delicious and fluffy! Paired with the spicy patty it was the perfect combination. **If you're ordering a dozen patties, they need 24 hours notice. **if you're in a time crunch call ahead of time to place your order **Take-out only

Sandra W.

Yelp
These are 100% not Jamaican patties. I thought they were and the second I looked at them I was disappointed. With that being stated, once I wrapped my head around the fact that they weren't Jamaican, I didn't hate them for what they were. I'm thinking Guyanese or somewhere in the Caribbean other than Jamaica. There was a lot of filling and it was well seasoned but the crust threw me off because it's so different from the Jamaican crust. I'm surprised at all the great reviews that mention Jamaican patties because there is no way a Jamaican would think that this is authentic. While it tasted nice, I don't think I would go there again. There are too many Jamaican patty shops around to go back here. The minus 2 stars are for the crust and lack of Jamaican authenticity but the service was great and the patty was hot.

Chadwick D.

Yelp
been going since i was a child. moved to California and miss it so much. Just brought back a fresh batch from a visit to Miami.
google avatar

Alyssa A.

Yelp
Definitely a hole in the wall but so good. I got the spicy beef sandwiched with coco bread. Just the right amount of spice. I've been looking for a patty place and I'm glad I found Sonia's.
google avatar

Jae V.

Yelp
Some of the best you can get! The flaky crust is perfect and the spicy beef is my favorite filling. Get a frozen dozen to keep at home!
google avatar

Ayo A.

Yelp
Oh my god! Every time I think of this place I think of what a couple people can do to make other people appreciate the hard work they've done to maintain 5 star quality in such a small place. These patties are consistent! Been coming here for many years and from the first time to the last time I can expect the same! Amazing amazing. No BS. Straight to the point and heads high. Love them.
google avatar

Suzette R.

Yelp
I have been going to Sonias patties since 1994 when there were many varieties offered such as jerk pork, lobster, veggie and curried shrimp. The quality has not changed over the years. I usually order a dozen spicy to take home and freeze for whenever I am craving a patty. These patties are still fresh and flaky and the filling is always well seasoned with the right amount of spice.
google avatar

Enzo C.

Yelp
For anyone who hasn't been to Sonias Patties and like Jamaican Patties, clearly you are missing the BEST PATTIES in Florida. The best Patties by far compare to any other shop in Florida. Must order: Mild, spicy inside Coco Bread Special item to order/ Original Rum cake, without doubt the best rum cake in Florida as well Tip: call ahead for pick up order. Congrats!
google avatar

Andres G.

Yelp
The absolute best Jamaican patties in Miami, hands down! I can only review the beef patties, I've had their mild and spicy and both are sooo good. The patty is generous in filling, the dough is so flaky and these appeared to be a little larger than typical Jamaican patties. Each order is made to order so you may have to wait a bit but it's so worth it!
google avatar

Jenise R.

Yelp
I stopped by here one day I had a massive craving for Jamaican patties and I'm so glad I did! This little gem hidden in the corner of a Kendall strip mall packs a punch and stick to what they know and are good at, making patties. I tried the mild and spicy patties, both were exceptional. I've had patties at a number of places and this place just does it right. Perfect amount of seasoning and heat, without killing your tongue but still spicy. The meat to dough ratio is on point. They definitely aren't stingy, you get a nice mouthful of meat in every bite. The lady who helped me at the front desk was very sweet and has a whole system set up to make checking out and taking your food more sanitary during these times. I appreciate the effort. I will definitely be back when I'm in the area for more.
google avatar

Marcos M.

Yelp
Great place, great service. Staff memebers are friendly. If you are in the mood for Jamaican Pattie. Head over here for the freshest Jamaican Pattie's. Also try their rum cakes.

Mike D.

Yelp
Beware ! Very Rude, woman. Masks are not required at this time, especially to people who are vaccinated. For businesses that recommend a mask should issue a mask on site.
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
Get ready to be held, caressed and lulled into a deep satisfying abyss of Jamaican patty deliciousness. From the patties...to the coco bread...to the high quality of the fresh meat, spices and herbs you WILL taste in every tummy tantalizing bite...trust me...you will not be disappointed. You taste the love and effort they put into their craft in every single bite you take. Big-up to you Sonia's Patties!!! You got the patty game on lock!!!
google avatar

Cristina L.

Yelp
If you're in the mood for true Jamaican Patties then you have to visit Sonia's! The prices are reasonable, the staff is very attentive. They're very friendly. It's a stop and go location. The parties are cooked fresh on the spot. You can also call in to order. They're fresh, tasty and worth the drive from cutler bay to Kendall.

Chris H.

Yelp
This place is the best, for all that complain about business times remeber this is just a couple of ladies running a small business. Worth the wait.

Dajour R.

Yelp
Not the best tasting but they are hot. My son stood at the door at 11:30 and they just started at him without a word with the door closed. They never communicated anything and when I called to find out if they were open. The lady rudely said, why didn't he call? Ma'am I know you won't miss my money, but I will never spend my money with people in a service industry that lack communication skills
google avatar

Yelp
It's always good to go to a place that lives up to its positive reviews. Located in a small strip mall directly across MDCC this place is awesome! The service was very friendly and the menu is a "no nonsense" menu. Meaning you can have a patty or a patty! Don't try to be complicated. I decided to try a mild beef w/coco bread, a curry chicken & a lobster patty accompanied by a Kola Champagne. Easily they win the award for BEST PATTY! It was VERY HOT, Very fresh and Very Delicious! I will recommend that you call your order ahead because it can take up to 15-20 minutes as the patties are made to order. Also make sure you let the patty sit for at least 5-10 minutes because they're scorching hot!! The coco bread was phenomenal! I'll definitely return. They could use a few seating areas for those who want to eat it there.
google avatar

Tameka F.

Yelp
These patties are the best I've ever had. It was soft, hot and fresh. I forgot to mention filling. So good, I can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
I've got only one word to say: Curry Chicken Patty! Ok, so maybe that's three words. It doesn't matter how many words it is, but there is one word to describe them: Awesome. They have more than chicken, but it's the chicken that sets Sonia's apart from the the rest of the patty crowd. Freshness is also another thing that sets them apart; you won't find your patty sitting around getting warmed all day.. Nope, you've got to wait a little while. It's worth the wait. Sonia's has been here for nearly 20 years, has seen many write-ups and has even been seen on some popular food network TV shows.. I'm surprised there was no review on here. Maybe the other Yelpers are trying to keep it a secret?
google avatar

Sandy T.

Yelp
They mainly have Jamaican patties here. They also have coco bread, rum cakes, and soft drinks. Patties are made FRESH!!! I got spicy beef patty and lobster curry (limited time offer). Beef patties here are delish! Not only they bake it fresh the patty is FULL of meat no air pockets here. The curry lobster had good chunks of lobster meat, but I thought it was too salty. The crust too I believe it is home made. It does not have the same texture as the majority of patties but it is just as flaky and I would say crunchier. The rum cake I did not try but I bought one for le beau. He said the coconut rum cake was moist and you could the rum without it being overpowering. In his opinion it was one of the best! They also have Jamaican black rum cake, pineapple, coconut pineapple. OPEN MON-SAT 11am-6pm!!!!!
google avatar

Claudia J.

Yelp
Jamaican Patties... yummi!! This place has been for quite some time, they have built their reputation thru time! Patties are $2.25 each, they have several types: mild beef, spicy beef, curry chicken, and even lobster!! Lobster one is not a regular... but interesting, I don't know how would I feel eating a Lobster Pattie... hhmm... maybe not eating the whole thing. My favorite is the Spicy Beef, it's perfectly flavored, although if you don't do spicy... maybe stay away from this one. Spicyness gets stronger as you bite more. Patties are MADE TO ORDER, so yes you will have to wait, but it's definitely worth it!! HOT and crunchy when you first bite!! Yummi!!! Beware of the hotness!!

Yelp
If you like Jamaican patties, Sonia's is the place to go in South Miami-Dade county. Despite the famous reviews that have mentioned exotic patties such as lobster, the present menu seems to only have beef (hot or mild) and chicken curry. The store is just a take-out counter and a waiting space with a couple of benches. American and Jamaican sodas and beverages are available. The award-winning patties are made to order, so you may have to wait for a few minutes. As a fan of Jamaican patties, I found them to be good. The crust was nice and flakey, and the fillings were hot and flavorful. The exact location may be difficult for some to find. It is opposite Miami-Dade College south campus on Killian Parkway (SW 104th St) in a strip-mall at right-angles to the road. The entrance has a Starbuck's on the corner.
