The Best Mexican Tamales in NYC | Eater NY

"Sonia Pérez is Brooklyn’s “tamales queen”: She’s been selling sweet and savory tamales on weekends near Maria Hernandez Park, on Knickerbocker Avenue, for two decades. The tamales are made in her apartment each weekend and come with pork, chicken, poblano peppers, and more." - Luke Fortney

I Googled the address cause I didn’t know the location or hours of business, I had read some reviews and wanted to try it. Opening time was 0730, didn’t state different holiday hrs. Day after Xmas I arrived & there was sign on door “open at 9”. I waited & went in at 9 and was told it was pick-up orders only. I could order “tomorrow”, opening at 0730. I went back next day & sign on door said “open @8”. I waited till 8 & bought 3 dz, different kinds, then ordered 6 dz “specialty” (added cranberry or jalapeño strips). Lady said they could do them and would be ready following day by 0730. I live in Weslaco, arrived following day before 0900. Different lady told me they were “just going to cook them, it’ll be ready at 0930.” I opted to come back at 9. Came back at 0940 and was told they were having problems with their cookers. I received my tamales at 10:30, lady gave me another excuse “I got the wrong cranberries and had to go back” & “it was short notice for specialty tamales”. I let her know they should have told me “yesterday” that they couldn’t do them. Tamales (pork, chicken, w/cranberries & jalapeños) were not very tasty. Masa was not tasty either. And I got fresh cranberries?? instead of dried cranberries. Not very much meat in them, jalapeños were not “hot”.

I had an amazing experience at Sonia's Tamales! We decided to try both the pork and chicken tamales, and they were bursting with incredible flavor. What impressed me the most was the minimal use of oil, which made the tamales feel light yet satisfying. The hot sauce provided the perfect balance of heat and flavor, enhancing the overall taste without overwhelming it. The owner's generosity in offering samples truly showcased their dedication to customer satisfaction. Sonia's Tamales is now my go-to place for delicious, well-prepared tamales that never disappoint. Highly recommended! DELIAS WATCH OUT!

Had seen someone post on social media so wanted to give it a try. First off all the tables were dirty , the self serve veggie and salsa area is a mess and empty , they only have 1 high chair in business. The ice is self serve so many hands in it and no one maintains cleanliness of it . As far as the food the menudo had a good flavor but was nothing but fat and meat no hominy . The barbacoa was mushy and foul smell nothing like seen in photos. The breakfast tacos are okay 3/10 tortillas are to hard. This is not a place we will visit again

We stumbled into this restaurant for their specials sign. Craving menudo on the weekends is a must. We ordered the special of menudo, two barbacoa tacos and a drink for 7.99. Let me tell you, best deal for quality, amount and service! The food was great the amount was more than enough and the lady in the cashier was so sweet. Thank you! Will definitely be back.

The tamales were great. They are not as greasy as the big guys, but we loved the freshness and taste. The salsas were great too. We didn't try the menudo, but we are sure it's got to taste homely as well.

Freesample of 1 whole tamale! Food was hot and delicious. Tables all clean, service was excellent. We had a great experience. I tried the 7.99 special with menudo, 1 taco of bistec, and a drink. My husband ordered 2 tacos for 3.00. Everything was delicious! People were so courteous. We will come back!!!!!

I do not understand why the reviews claim these tamales are delicious. First of all, the filling is literally pureed, I purchased the chicken and cheese dozen, the way the chicken was mushy takes away from the taste of the filling, there was hardlyany cream cheese. The maza was salty, and not fluffy enough for my taste. I ordered mine to go, but the place itself is small maybe 5 tables tops. I tried this place thinking the tamales would be better than old Delia's , with all honesty they both are overrated. I will not be trying this place again, but at least I was able to try it and review it myself. The front lady was courteous, but it seems like no one else is in the front to help with service.

Sonia’s Tamales were delicious! Tamales had a good amount of chicken and cheese. Ordered extra to go because I knew our kids would enjoy them, and they did. Customer service was great, ladies are very nice and offer samples of menudo and tamales, in case you can’t make up your mind. Happy to find a new tamale place!
