"Why book? This warm, welcoming, family-run hotel in Vail is ideal for a cozy ski vacation, an active summer hiking and mountain biking getaway, or a colorful fall pilgrimage to marvel at the golden-yellow aspen leaves of the Colorado Rockies. In the spring, the Sonnenalp also makes an ideal basecamp for attending the seminars, grand tastings, and indulgent winemaker dinners of Vail’s beloved food and wine festival, the Taste of Vail. And at any time of year, the hotel’s world-class spa is worth planning a trip around in its own right. Set the scene Nestled among mature evergreen and aspen trees along the burbling Gore Creek, the Sonnenalp is an elevated Bavarian-inspired ski lodge in the heart of Vail Village. From the hotel, it’s a short walk to Gondola One, which gives skiers and snowboarders access to Vail Ski Resort’s sprawling 5,317 acres of skiable terrain. Conveniently, the hotel is also surrounded by restaurants, boutiques, bars, and other establishments located along Vail’s pedestrian-friendly East Meadow Drive. Designed with rustic wood accents, a cheery red and green color scheme, and plenty of plaid, the property would look equally at home among the Alps of southern Germany. And that’s no accident: The Sonnenalp is the Colorado version of its sister property in Ofterschwang, Germany. Loosely translated, the name means “sun on the mountains.” The backstory The Sonnenalp’s history is a big part of its charm. Its legacy dates back to 1919, when the first generation of the Faessler family began welcoming travelers to a small lodge in the Allgäu Alps. In the decades that followed, subsequent generations of the Faessler family transformed the inn into a large, modern hotel, adding additional rooms and upscale amenities like an indoor pool and tennis courts, all while maintaining its homey hospitality and charm. Meanwhile, in the United States, World War II veterans Pete Siebert and Earl Eaton were busy creating Vail Ski Resort, which they officially opened in the Rocky Mountains in December 1962. Intrigued by the American ski resort’s success, the Faessler family decided to expand their business to Colorado in 1979. Since then, the family’s Vail outpost has grown and evolved to include 15 rooms and 112 suites, a semi-private golf course, a luxurious spa, and an array of dining options. In addition to providing travelers with a place to retreat after a day of exploring Vail’s legendary “back bowls,” the Sonnenap is also a wildly popular venue for weddings and other upscale events. The rooms From the custom-made blonde wood furniture to the throw pillows with silhouettes of leaping stags, the Sonnenalp feels effortlessly and authentically Bavarian. This is an upscale hotel, but there’s actual character and warmth in the decor—hefty armoires, mounted antlers, quaint writing desks, plush loveseats, sturdy wooden chairs, heavy drapery, arched doorways, and dark wood ceiling beams help make travelers feel right at home. Many of the rooms and suites also have gas fireplaces and French doors that open onto small balconies. Food and drink Food at the Sonnenalp runs the gamut from traditional European fare like schnitzel and raclette at Swiss Chalet to hearty Western-inspired staples like burgers and fried chicken at Bully Ranch—there are a lot of options, even though the hotel itself doesn’t feel huge. Start the day with muesli and eggs benedict on the glass-enclosed terrace overlooking Gore Creek at Ludwig’s, then finish with apres-ski drinks and tasteful piano or guitar performances at King’s Club, which feels like an unpretentious living room. The spa The Sonnenalp’s spa is so magical that you may find yourself daydreaming about it while carving up the ski slopes—seriously. Even if you don’t book a facial, massage, or other high-elevation treatment, carve out a few hours to spend in this bright, airy space, which has skylights and huge floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the snow-covered trees just outside. Read a book and sip tea in front of the central fireplace, swim between the indoor and outdoor sections of the glimmering pool, and soak your aching quads in the hot tubs under the evergreens and aspens while listening to the peaceful babble of Gore Creek. Fittingly, there’s also a dedicated oxygen bar to help with any symptoms of altitude sickness you may be feeling. The neighborhood/area Vail Village is the heart of this ski-centric community on Interstate 70, with chic apres-ski spots, high-end shopping, and decadent restaurants located some 8,150 feet above sea level. In addition to the Sonnenalp, all of the buildings in Vail Village were designed with European alpine architecture in mind, so walking around feels a bit like strolling through a wintry Bavarian fairytale. Gore Creek meanders through town, with a scenic, well-maintained walking and biking trail running right alongside it. Look up from nearly anywhere and you’ll find yourself gazing at Vail’s perfectly groomed ski slopes (which transform into lush, green hiking and mountain biking trails in the summer). The service Staffers are friendly, engaged, and helpful, without being overly formal. Many of the employees wear Bavarian-style costumes as their uniforms—think: dirndls and lederhosen—which can come off as a little kitschy but ultimately adds to the overall European vibes. For families The Sonnenalp’s location makes it particularly friendly for families and groups of travelers. Since it’s so easy to walk back and forth between the slopes, everyone can ski or snowboard at their own pace, with as many breaks back at the Sonnenalp as they like. The hotel also has a kid’s club that orchestrates fun activities for little ones like arts and crafts, ice skating, games, sledding, movie nights, nature walks, and more. Anything left to mention? Hauling a tangle of skis and poles for several blocks—all while wearing clunky ski boots and a heavy coat—is one of the few annoying parts about skiing, so be sure to take full advantage of the Sonnenalp’s handy ski concierge. When you arrive, simply leave your gear with the staff near the entrance. Then, when you’re ready to hit the slopes, pull on your comfy sneakers and casually walk over to the Gorsuch Ski Cafe near Gondola One. Your boots will be toasty warm and you’ll be able to slip them on in comfort, then grab your skis and poles from the racks out front. When you return, the staff will greet you with a warm chocolate chip cookie and stash your stuff until your return the next day. If you need to rent skis, the hotel can help with that, too. In the spring, summer, and fall, book a tee time at the Sonnenalp Club, the hotel’s 7,100-yard links-style golf course in nearby Edwards." - Sarah Kuta

Perfect location, the staff was amazing!! Rosa in the dining room for breakfast was so kind and took great care of us each morning. The food was very good and the breakfast buffet has so many options. The valets for our car were also above and beyond. They suggested a route for us that was beautiful and added to our vacation! The room was very nice with turn down service with cookies and fresh towels. Service like this is hard to find these days, I would highly recommend a stay!!!

The location is wonderful. We didn’t need to really leave the hotel because everything you need is there. The best restaurants are there, they have a wonderful spa and pool, and entertainment at night. The staff is exceptional . The European standard is much appreciated. We were there on our 40th anniversary. The waitress at breakfast offered us free champagne to celebrate and didn’t have to ask anyone for permission. I will never stay anywhere else. This hotel knows how to treat a guest!

Wonderful place to stay. Staff was attentive. You are right in the heart of downtown Vail and can walk to all the shopping and dining. Bed was very comfortable and turndown service left sweet treats each nights. The highlight was breakfast! Best waffle I've ever had. Would definitely stay again.

This is a real special property in Vail. Feels like a lodge in Bavaria. The staff is friendly and efficient. Had small issue with a bathroom drain and was immediately addressed. Rooms are spotless and very spacious. Totally recommend!

Sonnenalp Vail is a wonderful luxurious accommodation. The Junior Suite we booked was perfect - comfortable, spacious, large bathroom with soaking tub and shower. Centrally located in Vail Village with all the amenities you want including a variety of restaurants, piano bar, a spa, and walking distance to all the shops and venues in Vail. We especially loved Swiss Chalet restaurant with fondues and other authenic Swiss menu items.

Google
The hotel is well situated and the service was consistently excellent. Our room was large and well kept. The in room fireplace and two balconies overlooking the creek were great. We ate breakfast at the hotel, the buffet was impressive. We also enjoyed the adjacent cafe and Swiss Chalet restaurant. The hotel is very walkable and the ski concierge at gondola one was very convenient.

Amazing hotel! The property is absolutely beautiful and pristine. The staff is incredible. The front desk and housekeeping team are exceptional. It is right in the middle of everything you will want to do in Vail! Highly recommend staying here.

We were here during shoulder season so not very crowded-which was nice. The staff does seem to want you to have a great stay. The jewel in this crown has always been the breakfast buffet-but during shoulder season it was all off the menu and we were disappointed in this but the wait staff went out of there way to accommodate us.

Yelp
The management here really doesn't care about you. Our stay was less than stellar and they didn't care one bit. We had our water shut off for 2 hours during the day, an elevator was out of service the whole time, and our entire evening plan to sit by the fireplace enjoying a drink together was torpedoed when we walked in at 8pm to find them cleaning the carpets. With the room soaking wet and overpowering smell of chemicals. I was most disappointed about that one, as I had really been looking forward to it and we only had one full day here. I asked if there was a schedule or anyway to see that this was planned. They said no and worst of all didn't care one bit that we were disappointed. The spa and outdoor pool area is absolutely gorgeous, which is why we might still consider staying here again. But then again, there are so many other beautiful properties in Vail, so maybe not There were other things too, like the odd choice to put the king sized bed UPSTAIRS in the loft and the tiny full sized bed down in the main room with the fireplace and the bathroom. We are fit and navigating stairs wasn't a big deal, but managing the stairs in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom would be physically difficult for some. Of course, anyone who climbs a full flight of stairs in the middle of the night is going to find it that much harder to go to back to sleep. Kind of annoying though that the kids get to enjoy the main room and the fireplace while the adults get relegated to the loft. None of this was by itself so bad, but the. "Oh well" attitude from the staff was what really got to me.

Yelp
SPA review only as I didn't stay at this property. I had a 10am massage but showed up at 8:30 to relax and enjoy the amenities. They have lockers, showers, sauna, steam room, hot tubs, and pool. They offer shampoo, conditioner, lotion, spf, razors, hair brushes, makeup wipes, cold towels, robes and slippers. This was an amazing spa experience! My massage was the best massage I've ever had. I did a 50 minute Abhyanga massage and it was so relaxing! After the massage, I sat by the fire and enjoyed the peace and quiet. I stayed until about 2pm enjoying all of the spa amenities. They provide fruit infused water and teas. There is also an oxygen bar available for an additional cost. They do allow children under the age of 16, with adult supervision. There were a few kids in the pool so it's not an adult only area which is the only downfall.

Sarah O.

Yelp
Wonderful!! Service was top notch! Staff were all gracious and friendly! And the Sunday buffet was amazing , everything was super delicious!!! I wanted to eat everything, but there was so much I couldn't even begin!!!! And I have been told I am a food snob by many friends!!! Just sayin'

Yelp
This hotel is 5++++++ stars. I would highly recommend it to all! I won a night here off of an Instagram contest. I know, I always assumed they were rigged too, until I found myself getting to stay at one of the most highly rated hotels as a guest. The minute you walk in you are treated like royalty. Someone will greet you and welcome you to the hotel as the valet comes to collect your keys, and everyone with smiles. The front desk will check you in and offer to store bags if it's not check-in time yet, and tell you how happy they are that you chose to stay with them. Once your room is ready, the hotel will text you to let you know you can return. This was so convenient. We were also really pleasantly surprised once we actually entered the room. It was spacious and rustic, with a good sized balcony. The crown jewel of these rooms though? The bathrooms! They are exquisite. So much larger than expected with a huge tub and shower, all of the amenities you could ever ask for (forget your makeup wipes? No problem!) and most importantly, heated floors. Seeing marble tile floors your body immediately braces to step on a cool surface, so feeling warmth instead is such an indulgence. I'll admit I priced out adding heated bathroom floors to my home after indulging at the Sonnenalp. Leaving the hotel is so easy because it is conveniently located to just about everything. We had a less than 10 minute walk anywhere we went, including the Four Seasons for the famous Haute Chocolat, Vail Village for shopping and dining, and Vintage Vail for brunch. I clocked over three miles that day just wandering around, enjoying the town. Once we were done exploring, heading back to the Sonnenalp to enjoy the King's Club is an absolute must-do. The piano playing in the early evening is so romantic and calming, and you can enjoy a nice drink while you take it all in. We went for a 5:30 dinner at the Stuberl (also incredible), and when we left around 7:00 the King's Club was in full swing. The music had gotten more upbeat, complete with singing, and every table was taken with a line out the door. Such a fun atmosphere. We skipped and went back to the room because my husband had overindulged throughout the day, and headed to bed early. Around eight our doorbell rang, so I answered and was greeted by the nicest man handing me cookies and water for bed. I have stayed in a million hotels and NEVER had a service like this. It was so wholesome and just another example of how above and beyond they go. The Sonnenalp, and every single person we met that works inside of it, is and are exceptional. We would be incredibly lucky to get to stay here again, and I would highly recommend it to all who are traveling to Vail!

Yelp
Cute hotel, great staff and beautiful views. Very Swiss chalet like. Spa and pools were great

Yelp
DO NOT LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN YOUR ROOM! Beautiful property, beautiful views and great location but that doesn't go against things going missing from your room. Was up there for a company retreat. My company gifted me a nice bottle of alcohol and placed it in my room. Left for the day for meetings and and evening get together. Came back to the room that evening - turndown service done, cookies in the room and the bottle of alcohol MISSING. Asked around - nobody knew anything. Put the privacy please sign up the rest of the stay. The day of checkout - before we even left the room housekeeping came into the room (again, with the privacy please sign still up) to start cleaning. Otherwise it was a great venue, the pool and hot tub was nice. The gym is open 24 hours and it's right in vail village where there is plenty to do.

Lisa S.

Yelp
The hotel is located in the heart of downtown Vail within walking distance of stores and great restaurants. The service is fantastic and the rooms very comfortable. I had several nights of sound sleep on a comfortable bed. I loved our little mini suite which was located on 2 floors with access to the king size bed via a spiral staircase. A nice gas log fireplace was the perfect ambiance for a cozy winter getaway. There's a humidifier in the room which is a must-use appliance with the air so dry in the mountains. And every night they come by with fresh baked cookies and extra bottles of water. I love this US-based swiss chalet and will definitely consider coming back.

Mahniya S.

Yelp
Great hotel to stay in for Vail and is located in the village - would recommend to book early as prices definitely go up closer to the weekend! Thought the staff was very kind and helpful!! This hotel has more traditional vibes and fits the feel of the city!! We stayed in a suite that was spacious and the bathroom was large with a big bathtub and separate shower. It conveniently has 3 popular restaurants located within/attached to the hotel! They also have both an indoor and outdoor hot tub (though they both are on the smaller size, so wouldn't want more than 1 party in there at a time.) Of note they do charge an additional $50 resort fee per night. I enjoy getting a facial at the end of my ski trips, so did the same here. Got the standard facial and thought $180 (without tax/ tip) was a bit steep given the normality of it.

Emma K.

Yelp
Highly recommend this hotel. The location, quality and service are absolutely exceptional for the price. All of the staff--from the bellhops, to the front desk, to the waiters and waitresses--are so attentive. We look forward to our next visit at this amazing hotel!

Essie K.

Yelp
We were in town for a family friend's wedding and decided to stay here given its close proximity to the wedding venue. The pros: - a nice traditional hotel with well maintained grounds and rooms (rooms have nice heated floors, humidifiers, strong AC which was a plus during the summer heat wave) - walking distance to great restaurants and shopping - nice facilities including the spa, the indoor/outdoor pool, and oxygen bar - make sure to check out the amazing farmers market on Sundays mornings in the village. It beginnings right in front of the hotel. There's over 100 different vendors for food, dessert, goods, etc.) The cons: - expensive parking fee ($40 per night for valet, there is no self parking option or street parking around) - expensive resort fee ($43 per day but doesn't include much other than access to the pool and fitness center) Vail seems to be a popular and expensive destination year round. For these exorbitant prices, I'm not sure if I'd come back.

Julie R.

Yelp
The Sonnenalp is a Vail staple for a reason. The hotel is beautiful and is located in the heart of the village. Immediately, the bellhop was friendly, super attentive and helpful as we had no idea where to go eat. He gave a recommendation and offered a ride there and back. We were celebrating two milestone birthdays and an anniversary. When we checked in the hotel had upgraded our room to a suite with a fireplace and gave us a chilled bottle of champagne and a cake. The room was cozy and very clean. The spa area was awesome and the space is very relaxing. The fitness center is great! From the front desk to the service and the area this place should easily be 5 stars. Would HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Brena E.

Yelp
This review is specific to the spa. The location is great right in Vail Village. It sounds like they validate parking, but I don't know the details on that. Their lounge area while you wait for treatments is large and nice. However, the women's locker room is very small and I felt like I kept stepping over people in there. One big concern I had was no soap in the locker room/bathroom. With COVID, that should never be allowed to run out. The treatments themselves were great, but it was odd that there was an uncovered window in the massage room, so I didn't love the lack of privacy. My favorite part was the lounge chairs by the creek. I could've stayed there all day, but alas it rained :(. I wasn't sure if you could order food out there, so it would be nice if they proactively told you about that when you check in.

Greg L.

Yelp
Amazing euro hotel. Totally fits for Vail, I did the western style bar on the back of the property, would love to stay here.

Judy L.

Yelp
Fantastic hotel. Service was superb. Our room had an amazing bathroom with a giant bathtub, heated floors, and two side by side sinks. We went during mud season so lots of places were closed. The concierge was instrumental in helping us navigate closures and still have a pleasant stay in the village. Bed and linen were nice and comfy. The room came with a few amenities that we didn't use -- microwave, fridge, and fireplace. Door could either open to the balcony or tilt open for air flow. Free spring water in the room. Parking was expensive -- $40. Public parking just down the street was free. Pool and jacuzzi were nice and heated, and included both indoor and outdoor options. The spa treatments were fantastic. One of the best massages I've had in a long time.

Kim G.

Yelp
Sonnenalp patrons, I am sad to report my recent stay at this hotel was entirely different than what I have experienced in the past. If, after reading this, you still want to be a guest at the hotel, be sure you do not book with anyone except Sonnenalp directly. We went with Hotels.com and I am almost positive that I saw the man turn up his nose when he looked into our reservation to check us in. And that's where the problems began. I requested a creekside view and was told by Ulises that a large party was arriving and that they would have no extra rooms. We spent three full days in that hotel and never so much as shared an elevator with anyone, it was so empty. I never passed anybody in the hall and only saw a few scattered people gathering for meals at the several on site restaurants. Full to capacity. Now that was just an outright lie. Remember how you used to enjoy being greeted by your last name by the employees of the Sonnenalp? Don't count on it. 2 employees called us by our name during our whole stay. The first was when we checked in, the 2nd employee to use our name did so because she had it right in front of her when she delivered our check from lunch. Taking on such a simple act as using someone's name is classy, but don't wait for it to happen at this hotel. It doesn't anymore. We weren't overly impressed with the menus at the hotel so we spent most of our meals in the neighboring village. We did stop at the little coffeehouse attached to our hotel. Dumb mistake. At this small cafe, you can get refreshments, coffee, sweets, and libations. My husband and I ordered and then went outside to wait for our drinks to be served. Five minutes went by, 10 minutes went by, 12 minutes and still no drink. Then we see the concierge and the server at the restaurant chatting by the front door. We looked at ourselves and both raised our eyebrows and our shoulders, wondering where the drinks were. At 15 minutes, my husband left our table to go and ask them what was going on with the drinks. They looked at each other and then at my husband and laughed and apologized, saying that they had completely forgotten about our order. Excuse me, there was nobody else in the entire restaurant. There was nobody in line in front of us or in back of us. There was simply nobody there. I am still shocked as I recall my confusion over what these 2 men were doing as we were waiting for our drinks to arrive. And for one of those chatty people to be the concierge? Inexcusable. The next day arrives and I am not well rested because the room that we have been given is directly above a bus stop. So not only were we hearing the noises that buses make as they stop and start, there were always people waiting for the bus right by our balcony. There was simply no chance for any kind of privacy. We were forced to use the air conditioning all night to cool down our stuffy room because we weren't able to utilize the fresh air from outside. If you are still thinking about visiting this hotel, make sure you ask to NOT be put in room 329. It is simply awful. It makes me really sad to know that I could've had such a better experience had our room been just a tad bit nicer and had somebody taken a little bit more interest in giving us a quality experience. My disappointment the next day made my stay all the worse. After exchanging messages with Jamie at the spa, I was booked for a massage. Upon arriving at the spa, I came to find out that the appointment was made on an entirely different day. I did receive a voicemail from the spa manager, Patty, asking me to call and give her the details of what transpired. I haven't had a chance to do that yet, but I do still have the voicemail left by Jamie which confirmed my appointment on the day I wanted it. Big fail, Sonnenalp Spa staff. All in all, I would never spend the money to have this kind of experience. Lousy. The Sonnenalp is nothing like it used to be, so if you're going to go to Vail, spend the money and go to the Four Seasons where you can plan on getting the good old fashion customer service that they have always given. Big thumbs down on Sonnenalp. Sadly we won't be coming back nor will we recommend for friends and family to come here. There are just too many other options.

Bruce F.

Yelp
Dear Sonnenalp Management, A very disappointing 6-day stay beginning July 21. We have enjoyed Sonnenalp 3 times in the past, before recently buying a home in Vail. This stay is not representative of past positive experiences, but it may be our last for us - and the many visitors we hope visit us in Vail in the future. There are numerous great alternatives within a block of Sonnenalp we've enjoyed immensely and with great consistency of product and experience. On check in, with Expedia VIP status, participating hotels are supposed to offer such things as complimentary room upgrades, free parking ($40/night plus tax), and $50 hotel credit. We were not offered either of the first two and my request for the hotel to consider at least the free parking was declined. The $50 credit was not applied (until I caught it at check out). To the contrary, we were assigned an accessible room without a tub--which we felt should have been disclosed at check-in. Our courtyard-facing room was badly dated, tired, but otherwise adequate--not what one should expect of a $500 per night expense. The roof was under construction the evening of our arrival - with workers on our roof with jackhammers, removing or repairing roof tiles. The construction noise should have been disclosed, too, and compensation offered. We had to cancel birthday dinner on veranda due to the noise. Bully Ranch, Sonnenalp's excellent restaurant wasn't accepting reservations--or accommodating hotel guests according to the front desk person who should have IMMEDIATELY had Victor come over to try to find us a reservation off property. No such offer was made. Unforgivable. Disappointing. Most well-run, exclusive hotels make room for hotel guests in their onsite restaurants--even during pandemics. No attempt was made along these lines. Our guest room--aside from the undisclosed "accessible nature" and construction noise, had only two bath towels because, being accessible, there's inadequate space for such things as towels or personal items for a stay the duration of a week. The room had no coffee maker (available only on request) or top sheet. More about the sheet situation later. Upon our request, were offered a choice of coffee makers--Nespresso (no thanks) or drip (yes, please). Housekeeping brought Nespresso, but politely offered to replace it. They didn't. Good morning, day 2! No clean towels, no coffee maker. No problem. At 6:30 a.m., I went to the front desk to inquire about all of the above (including the sheet), and although politely responding with surprise, the attendant offered no alternative room (still no room upgrade), no free parking, and no "let me see what we can do to make things right". About the level of commitment to service and details, and empathy, zero on a scale of 1-10. No flat sheet. My wife theorized you wash the duvet covers and replace them with each room turnover, but I'm not too sure. I've stayed at hotels with down duvets, all around the world, and always, I've had a flat sheet. During a pandemic, I don't want to guess whether or not the duvet cover is washed between guests. Please consider flat sheets, even if the duvets are cleaned!! Please consider double-sheeting while I'm on the subject. Between the $40 parking fee and the $43 per night resort fee (a "room tax" for which I received NOTHING of value), my $333 per night room was now pushing a real cost of $500 per night including taxes and fees, minus the $50 Expedia hotel credit. Additionally, I notified the person at the front desk on day 2 that I parked across the street in the FREE covered public parking lot and she said she would make a note. She did not. I was charged $160 for 4 nights of parking. I was credited after catching that, too. All of the issues should have been both avoided--and resolved by attentive management and better training. I politely voiced my concerns to wonderful employees here NUMEROUS TIMES who are NOT EMPOWERED or trained by management to resolve issues or to escalate to management when necessary. Hospitality Management 101: -acknowledge elite status and returning guests. -pay attention to the basics. Towels, coffee maker, sheets. -disclose at check-in that you're assigning an accessible room without a tub or adequate space. -disclose you won't be honoring complimentary upgrade privileges. As an Expedia VIP, I value room upgrades and other perks like free parking. -disclose to guests BEFORE ARRIVAL or during check-in, you're under construction-and that construction may be disruptive to guests' stays. Offer compensation. Truly, during our drive home, I felt I'd been robbed. As new homeowners in Vail, we were considering a membership at Sonnenalp Country Club, but after this experience, we are truly struggling with that decision. Sincerely, Anthony (Bruce) F.

Yelp
Loved the restaurant! Great German cuisine and lager :) The Hefe' was with it and pretzel too.

Yelp
We visited the Sonnenalp for my birthday. Kamar at the front desk really made it special. First, she remembered our family from our previous visit. Then she stopped by with a birthday surprise. She is very sweet, and the hotel is great as well. Also, Andrew was extremely helpful. Thank you very much

Yelp
Jamar who works at this hotel as a bell captain was amazing. He is a first round draft pick and this hotel should be thrilled to have a man of his caliber and class working for them. He assisted my family in a matter. He was selfless and did not hesitate to offer a helping hand. He is a warm, friendly, and all around class act. Vail needs more Jamars!!!

Yelp
The Sonnenalp was clearly the highlight of our trip! The friendly service, amenities, and charm made the holiday amazing! See my TIP for ski rental information ℹ! The restaurants were laid back and offered several options of casual to fine dining. The spa is well done, and there are so many options that are included with the $15/day resort fee. A touch of Europe during your stay, with incredible hospitality. We'll definitely return‼

Yelp
My wife and I (along with our two kids) have been going to the Sonnenalp for years; over that time, Vail has gone through a lot of changes, and so too has the Sonnenalp to stay ahead of others but what's special is they really feel different from other hotels, restaurants, spas, etc... and I think as a guest that's 100% accurate. And having recently held an employee retreat there (for the first time) allowed us to conduct our business and truly treat our employees and expose them to why the Sonnenalp is better/different/unique. The meeting space was comfortable and spacious. Their IT department and catering took care of all of our ancillary needs and then to have the Hotel and it's amenities just upstairs was terrific. We're a family business - they're a family hotel and we thank them for treating us as such. Cheers!!

Yelp
Definitely a 5 star hotel for us. Super accommodating, COLD ROOMS, and a Nespresso machine in the room. Whaaat? It was a beautiful place with a wonderful spa and incredible staff. I would recommend anyone to stay here next time they're in Vail. Loved it.

Yelp
I wish I could give it 0 stars... Don't stay here unless you don't mind missing valuables. Housekeeping stole over 20k of jewelry. The police report states they found the jewelry and returned it to a different guest. Didn't even ask what room they were in. Don't stay here place is a joke. Should've stayed at the Four Seasons! 0 stars

Yelp
LOVED this hotel, a great setting for the wedding I attended, but also a tremendous getaway. Owned and operated by a family who lives on-site, this European-style hotel is in an ideal location within Vail Village, walking distance to the gondolas and a short walk to spectacular Ford Park and the Ford Amphitheatre. Less than two hours from Boulder. Outstanding customer service. A great spa located on premises, loved it, used almost every option and glad that I did! Outdoor hot tubs so relaxing! Enjoyed the library and common areas. The fireplace in my room was so nice, and LOTS of space in the closet. I'll return without a doubt, thankful I stayed there.

Yelp
We stayed at the Hotel Talisa and the concierge there, Christina, recommended we came here for their breakfast buffet. Even though it is slow season ( the end of the ski season as it is Mid April) the Sonnenalp hotel keeps their breakfast buffet operating even during weekdays and until 11am. It is a gorgeous hotel with a pretty restaurant and an amazing buffet. Lots of options from the hearty to the healthy and fit. Beautiful presentation of the buffet with well made dishes with lots of flavor. Service is attentive and welcoming (not stuck up like in many fine dining restaurants). The stoneware dishes are pretty and go well with the decor and style of the hotel and restaurant. They have the name of the hotel imprinted on them. I was lucky enough to be seated on their sunroom, lots of natural light and a nice view of the hotel around. Great recommendation!!!

Yelp
Fire alarm turned on for 20 minutes at 2am in the morning. Avoid this place like the plague or COVID

Yelp
Sonnenalp Resort of Vail is a world class resort that boasts an unrivaled luxurious experience right in the heart of Vail village. The influence is distinctly German and has all the authenticity and hospitality of a true Bavarian lodge. Our suite had everything you could imagine and was just beautiful to behold. Our suite was well-appointed with handcrafted Bavarian furniture that really gave the space a lot of character. There was incredible climate control in the room and we were always comfortably warm despite the cold weather outside. I enjoyed the gas log fireplace because it added a comfortable tranquility to the suite. Ultra-comfortable plush beds with plenty of space and height. The next morning we really got good use out of the Nespresso machine and all the assorted cups and silverware were really useful to take a cup of coffee out onto balcony. I also have to give a shout-out to the very strong Wi-Fi signal in our room and the entire property. We really enjoyed using their snug and soft robes located in the roomy walk-in closet. The robes go so well with the spacious and luxurious bathroom includes a hot tub to have a relaxing soak. There are also dual sinks and vanities. Not to mention the heated marble floors. This was truly a dream bathroom. Taking everything into consideration, our suite just felt like home. Because you'll likely want to spend a lot of time in your suite, turn down service was a welcome surprise to spruce up the room. It included their sleek glass bottled water and the hotel's delicious peanut butter cookies. Despite the size of the resort, the staff always make it feel like you're the most important person of all. The Concierge was particularly notable and was at all times completely knowledgeable about all of Vail. Whoever was present there bent over backwards to make sure we had all our questions answered and knew exactly where to go. One of the best things about Sonnenalp is the great location which is nearby nearly everything. I can't say enough good things about the Front desk staff who meet your every need and just genuinely care that you have the most amazing stay. They always go the extra mile and include nice detailed touches such as providing your entire party with water bottles totally unprompted. I really loved their beautiful full-service European spa and could have easily spent my entire day there. The pool area is so awesome and has connects both indoor and outdoor with jacuzzis at each end. There's a fireplace where everyone can just lay out and relax with their drinks. There's even an oxygen bar if you are feeling the altitude. As far as hotel gyms go, Sonnenalp has a really impressive one with various free weights, ample space, and a squat rack! That is certainly something you don't see everyday. After working up a sweat, you can cool down in their cold bath which will instantly relieve all those swollen areas. Take time in their sauna and steam rooms as well to warm up after the chilly dip and then have at it with their full amenities to make sure you're looking clean and sharp for your turn on the slopes. The on-site restaurants are so convenient and we definitely enjoyed our dinner at the Bully Ranch. You have to pass through the King's Club Lounge to get there but in doing so you get to enjoy live music in the fireside lounge. A wonderful tribute to Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah serenaded us on this night. We loved our stay at the Sonnenalp resort and we only barely scratched the surface of what was possible during our time in Vail. I can see why the resort is so highly regarded by rating agencies and publications across the world. That said, I will definitely be back and next time I want to take advantage of their luxurious activities (such as the private ski lounge) available to guests at the hotel. Can't wait to be back soon!

Yelp
Finest example of a "Getaway Resort" in Vail. My wife and I stayed here for a weekend to get away from the summer heat down in Denver. We loved feeling like we were walking into Switzerland every time we got back to the hotel - it feels like Vail was built around the Sonnenalp. Service is 5-star from the greeting at Valet all of the way to how housekeeping turns down your room for bedtime. Yes, you get fresh chocolate chip cookies and they get your bed ready, lay robes out, and close blinds for you. The amenities on property are great as well. Full-service spa, 6 restaurants, indoor/outdoor pool. I mean, for a while after we arrived I felt like we could have spent the entire weekend at the resort without going into the village! A couple of highlights were laying out at the pool right in between the pool and gore creek, hamburgers and mudslides at the bully ranch restaurant, and a port wine next to the fireplace to cap off a night with live music in their lodge-like resort bar. Book it.

Yelp
A wonderful experience in the Cafe. Watched a young lady from Argentina handle some poorly socialized guests - a credit to her and the hotel. Thank you. Great coffee and great conversation; this is 'old Vail'.

Yelp
This is an excellent hotel but be really careful to only book from the Hotel front desk. I made the mistake of booking online through what purported to be the Sonnenalp website. It was instead something called "Getaroom" I was charged a total of $900.19 for a two night stay in a room listed at $349/night. Then upon checkout the hotel charged us another $989.50. The room was for my grandson who was getting a shoulder operation at the Vail Hospital. He didn't know the details of my prior payment for the non refundable room so he just let them charge me again. The Sonnenalp has since refunded $537.46 of the total charges of $1889.50; However, they have yet to provide me with an itemized statement of what the Sonnenalp $989.55 charges were for and they say they can't tell me what the $900.19 I paid to "Getaroom" were for. I have no way to reach "Getaroom " as their receipt contains no contact information. Sonnenalp tells me "Getaroom " is owned by Expedia and that they often create websites designed to fool customers into thinking they are actually dealing with the Hotel--when in fact they are not. Lessons learned: 1)Never book online. 2)Only book through the hotel front desk. 3) Stay at a hotel with a better reservation/billing system than the Sonnenalp. They advise reasonable rates and then add all kinds of additional fees; They double charge-conveniently not giving customers credit for previous payments through 3rd parties, and they are largely unsympathetic when customers inquire as to why they've been charged $1889.50 for a two night stay advised at $349/night!

Yelp
Originally 3/5 Pros: excellent location, great service from concierge and wait staff and world class food and beverage, nice atmosphere Cons: had issues with the housekeeping touching personal items, moving items and noticed some personal belongings missing after we left. Update: was personally contacted by the head of housekeeping apparently this was an issue with a new employee and was compensated for the lost item will be updating to 5/5

Yelp
This hotel is exceptional. The property is welcoming and charming, but the staff and service are what makes the Sonnenalp a magnificent experience. Our breakfasts at Ludwig's was delicious and our service there impeccable. The manager, Brian, made sure we were well attended to. Lana, who welcomed us at reception was so helpful and amazing. Jeff John and Jamar the bellman/valet's, couldn't have done more for us during our stay. This was our fifth visit to the Sonnenalp and we look forward to many more return trips, definitely one of our favorite spots anywhere.

Yelp
By no fault of its own, Sonnenalp was pretty much at a disadvantage with me from the get-go. I am, what you would call, not their ideal guest. I don't ski, I didn't even pick this hotel, and I ended up getting altitude sickness. To best prove how Sonnenalp was able to combat (and conquer) these challenges, it's best to break 'em down. 1) I don't ski. That's right, I went to Vail with zero intention of hitting the slopes. I served about as much purpose there as a zebra in a coloring book. Truth be told, I was there for a wedding. But it turns out I can enjoy all the ancillary luxuries of a ski town without suiting up and slaloming about. And Sonnenalp is perfectly located in the heart of Vail Village, where I was able to wander and shop and eat and drink and do all those other things people travel thousands of miles to do. 2) I didn't even pick this hotel. You guessed it by now, but yes, the wedding I was attending was at the resort. And so was the room block. I'm not sure what the going rate is for the Junior Suite we booked, but as part of a group discount, we paid a little over $300 a night once you tallied up the fees and taxes and whatnot. It didn't exactly seem like a steal booking two nights in advance (again, in a place we probably wouldn't visit under other circumstances, given our non-skier status), but I can tell you that this was one of the biggest and most impressive hotel rooms I've ever stayed in. It had a mudroom at the entrance, a working fireplace, full living room furniture set-up, mini-office space, giant, wood-framed bed, and a balcony overlooking the snow-capped, tree-lined backyard of the hotel grounds. The bathroom was enormous all its own, with a bath, shower, double sinks, and wrap-around mirrors. The part that's hard to describe is just how much square footage was between all of the elements I've just mentioned. Perhaps I'm too used to staying in city hotels, but this place had space for days. And to think, this was the Junior Suite! The room and the common areas of the hotel shared the same warm, old-school, Euro aesthetic, somewhere between a hidden lodge in Black Forest, Germany and the Epcot version of Alpine Austria. The staff was international, as well, likely part of some work rotation from the Sonnenalp's global consortium, the appropriately named mouthful The Leading Hotels of the World. 3) I ended up getting altitude sickness. This one was a curveball. No one plans for this to happen, and apparently, it's something of a medical phenomenon in that it strikes people randomly, no matter their predisposition to high places or general well-being. But I got it. (Which sounds about right.) During the wedding reception, no less. (Also par for the course.) And while the only true quick fix is to descend to sea level, that just wasn't an option with festivities going on. So I was left to suck it up and then sleep it off. But not before a trip to Sonnenalp's oxygen bar. That's right, an actual bar in their spa area, where you wire oxygen tubing around your ears and then up your nose to inhale different flavored air. This was a first for me, and probably worth the few bucks I spent on hits of scented oxygen, if only to temporarily make me feel better during my unfortunate bout of altitude sickness while simultaneously looking like a designer suit-clad COPD sufferer. In the end, the wedding was beautiful, and I got to experience a part of the country I probably wouldn't have, if not for the specific opportunity. Yes, the Sonnenalp can be a bit pricey, and yes, some aspects are a bit outdated, though easily pawned off as charming. But for what is very likely and very literally a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me to infiltrate one of the top ski resorts in the country, I'd say the Sonnenalp rose to the challenge and made even this picky, altitude sickness-afflicted, non-skier feel like I belonged here.

Yelp
This spa canceled my appointment less than 24 hours beforehand and refused to accommodate my schedule to rebook. I missed out on services for the week because at that point I didn't have time to book anywhere else. Very rude staff and poor customer service.

Hailey H.

Yelp
Probably one of the worst places to stay in vail. Everyone working there was extremely rude and inhospitable! They wouldn't allow us to enjoy the pool without a million issues and ended up kicking my nieces out! Absolutely disrespectful. Would not recommend.

Taylor R.

Yelp
The best resort in Vail! Gorgeous rooms with fireplaces plus amazing bars/restaurants--with an authentic feeling Alpine vibe! And the staff is fabulous!

Christine R.

Yelp
Excellent service, food, and accommodations. The spa is lovely and the energy friendly and warm!

Yelp
This is a lovely, European-style hotel with a great deal of grace and charm. Of all the expensive hotels that I have stayed in, this one is among my very favorites. Lovely facilities that are well-maintained, good food, quality service. I look forward to coming back here. Addendum 10/8/17: On my last visit there, I bought something (a $20 item) in the spa shop and then returned it, and the employees there promised it would be removed from the bill. Then when I went to check out, it was still on the bill, and it took at least 20 minutes to get the problem sorted out and removed. The manager noticed that a problem was happening and asked about it, but the employee told her that they had things under control and so she didn't intervene. I just don't think that at the prices that this hotel charges, that should have happened - especially for $20. My time is worth more than that. So hopefully in the future, they will deal with that kind of issue better. It's still a lovely hotel and the rest of my experiences there have been excellent though.

Yelp
I love this resort!!! I am definitelly coming back here again! I felt just spoiled rotten! Took my bf to Colorado for his birthday and stayed in Denver, Vail and Aspen! This was our FAVORITE place!! Nice comfy room, heated floors, large tub with bath salts always available. I love how they go GREEN but keep all the anemities classy! Complimentary shuttle available for guests. Balcony with fireplace! Cookies and bottled water every night! Man...It's all the litte details! Not to mention a great location near the resort and close to shopping!!! Also they have great customer service! Everyone who works there is welcoming and nice :) I really miss this place! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful! Pros: Very clean rooms, cozy with fireplace My room was turned down every night and straightened up in the evening. I have not experienced this. Almost like cleaning service 2X a day! Staff was very nice and helpful. The Bully Ranch was awesome. Outstanding food and much better than places around the resort. Bryan worked in the bar and was amazing. Really made our visit special and he was very social. Cons: None I will definitely be back. Thank you to the staff for a great stay!!

Jennifer D.

Yelp
The spa is worth spending the day. Large lounge area around fireplace. Indoor/outdoor heated pool. 3 hit runs. Sauna and steam shower -- a perfect spa day! Even oxygen bar, wine & beer ... don't forget your services! Add the bio mat with infrared heat for added healing.

Yelp
Favorite place to stay in Vail! It never disappoints. From the charm to the amazing staff. Great location right on the Gore Creek. I feel like I am in the Austrian Alps. So cozy and comfortable. The Spa is definitely my favorite part of the hotel. So relaxing and great place to unwind while sitting fire side on the chic yellow and white striped pillows. The indoor/outdoor pool is beautiful. So pretty to be outside on the river. Spa services are excellent, the best facial I have ever had. All the restaurants are great, some of my favorite in Vail when not even staying at the Sonenalp. The Bully Ranch has a great patio in the summer, and simple American food. Love the Swiss restaurant for a night of fondue. Have only had Mother's Day brunch at Ludwigs, and is always good. Have seen the owners onsite every stay. It makes a difference, the attention to detail and helpful staff.

Yelp
Sonnenalp is such a wonderful place to stay when in Vail! The ambiance and décor are traditional Baviarian - I didn't think know if I was going to like it as I tend to lean more modern, but I loved it. Everything was just SO cozy and very fitting for Vail. We had a beautiful suite with fire places in both the bedroom and the living room. The beds were plush and cozy. Also, the pool and spa area are amazing. They have several different pools and hottubs surrounded by beautiful large trees and landscaping. Indoors in their spa area, they also have a pool and hot tub, oxygen bar, yoga room, fire pit and wonderful locker rooms equipped with steam baths and saunas. I got one of the best massages I've had in a while. The service was impeccable - everything we needed was available to us the minute we requested it. We brought our sweet 6 month old and needed a microwave, fridge and crib in our room. When we arrived it was all there waiting for us. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. You should definitely consider Sonnenalp if you're visiting Vail.

Yelp
Jordan Wehe is awesome! He was really nice to my family when we checked in. I'm a runner and we chatted about places to run "IN THE SNOW"! He really went above and beyond answering all of my Dad's and Mom's questions. And they think this generation is entitled :-) Jordan was so patient. I saw him deal with this really nasty woman. She was complaining about something and he was so nice to her. When she left, he had gotten her to smile and laugh! The hotel is nice. The other guests are very entitled - and this hotel gives you what you pay for! We enjoyed the concierge recommendations and the atmosphere. Rooms were nice. Basically - about the same as a Ritz, Fairmont or boutique for the rich. I am learning from watching how people treat the "help". Hopefully my generation realizes that money doesn't buy you the right to treat people poorly. Poor Jordan - that lady was so mad, but he was SO nice.

Yelp
We are here for Burton us open. And so far this hotel did not disappoint. It has a cute Bavarian charm our room has a loft with king bed, closet, dresser and a desk. This is great as my husband had to get work done. The main level has a huge master bath with two sinks huge tub and a separate shower. Murphy bed for kids, seating area and a beautiful fire place with decorative antlers. See pictures. Room is stocked with robes, slippers nesoresso coffee pods. We also received complimentary large bottle of water. We requested microwave and fridge so we can have our own cheese platter in the room and it was all here when we arrived. They have a ski valet as well. Parking is my valet only. Three restaurants on site. The lounge had live music where you can request songs, enjoy wine and order food. Food is from the same kitchen at Bully Ranch restaurant. You have put your name down on the list as they don't take reservations. I will update the review after our stay. So far we love it.

Dana S.

Yelp
The most exquisite hotel and spa in the valley. My parents started bringing me here when I was an infant, and we have continued the tradition with our own children (one who is now an adult). It truly feels like a second home with all the lovely touches throughout the authentic European resort: - fresh fruit, tea, cucumber infused water, and coffee on the main floor of hotel and spa - cozy nooks and a true library - diverse artwork (never see the same piece twice) - international, responsive but unobtrusive staff - seasonal designs reflective of European heritage - excellent spa with experienced therapists and aestheticians You simply cannot go wrong if you would enjoy staying in a leading hotel of the world in one of the most beautiful towns in Colorado.

Melissa W.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous place! Our room was HUGE (two stories), great balcony overlooking the gorgeous Vail Village, enormous bathtub, clean and cute. Just love it here!

Heather L.

Yelp
Had a fabulous stay in Sept for a wedding. Beautiful property! Great food and friendly staff. Kids club was a hit as well.

Yelp
We were driving through Colorado and were confronted with sharp pants of hunger when we decided to pull off the freeway to find some food. We found food. Not just expertly prepared Michelin-status cuisine, but an entire winter paradise. An entire little town transporting you to Europe. We decided we had to stay for the night and ended up at the Sonnenalp Resort. This place is absolutely gorgeous and cute and cozy at the same time. When we came in the bar area was electric with music and sounds of joy. The band that night was absolutely incredible with guitar skills that would match jimmy page and harmonica skills like an old blues soul from Chicago. The care and attention by all the staff made this trip absolutely amazing. The town of Vail is in itself perfect and this resort is icing on the cake.
