Sono Wood Fired - Review - Lincoln Park - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This is a warning. This is a hold onto your butts, sh*t’s about to get real, warning. There is a very good Italian/pizza spot in Lincoln Park hiding right under your nose. We mean, it’s great. They have 8 different kinds of bruschetta with interesting and delicious toppings like whipped ricotta and figs or onion jam and lavender honey. They have an imported brick oven that spits out bubbly-crusted Neapolitan pizzas. They do salad samplers and $6 wine nights. Sold yet? We’re worried that you’re not, because places like Sono Wood Fired are often too empty. We’re not sure why that is exactly - maybe it’s because too many people are getting caught up in things that don’t matter, like “the chef won an episode of Chopped Jr.!” or “The cocktail program was created by a former maid of Oprah!” or, “The walls are made of reclaimed wood previously used as canoe seats in the 1860s!” F*ck canoes. Let’s go to the place that serves good food, has great service, and makes you feel comfortable and welcome, like Sono Wood Fired. So this is a not-so-subtle reminder to not let yourself get fooled by mood lighting and TV contestants. Just because you don’t understand the ingredients doesn’t make it worthy of your plate. And overworked kale with farm-to-table chorizo topped with an invigorated truffle foam reduction is not a dish. That is a practical joke, and you are paying $67 to eat it. Instead, try a casual place like Sono Wood Fired. It’s good for weekday outings with friends, big group dinners on the weekends, or even a low-key date, whether you’re getting to know someone or sleep next to them every night. Sono Wood Fired might not have the creativity of others, but it’s always satisfying with solid and reliable Italian food that’s easy on the wallet. Those are things we can relate to, and we don’t need any TV judge experience to tell you it’s a fact. Food Rundown Crisp Artichokes Light yet fried crispy artichoke leaves with a tangy lemon aioli. This is a great group starter. Bruschetta We could make a meal out of the bruschetta alone, and sometimes we do. Get a flight of 5, and you can’t go wrong. We’re partial to the fig, ricotta, and arugula. Mussels Al Forno Skip it. Sono shines in its pizzas, and your money is best spent elsewhere. Pizza The wood fired oven in the back churns out bubbly-crusted pizzas, and you must get one red, one white, and split. From the rossa section, look into the salsiccia (sausage and roasted peppers), and from the bianche section, choose between the speck (smoked prosciutto and onions) or the wild mushroom. More Pizza Soak it in. Then go eat a pie or two. Pasta There’s always a couple basic and good pastas on the menu like a carbonara, rigatoni, or gnocchi. Never a bad idea to get one for sharing." - Claire Schlafly

If you happen to be in Norwalk, CT and you're craving Italian food, this place is a must-try. I know I should have tried the pizza, but I just wasn’t in the mood for it at the time. Here’s my take: everyone was friendly, and we were warmly greeted upon arrival. The space was bright, clean, and inviting—not to mention, the restroom was exceptionally clean. That said, it seemed the holiday staffing shortage affected service, particularly with how long it took for the food to arrive. It took about 30 to 45 minutes, but once it came, it was well worth the wait. Unlike many Italian restaurants, they don’t offer complimentary bread, but that was fine—we didn’t need to fill up before the meal. The dishes were flavorful and fabulous—not overly salty or greasy like some Italian food can be. They used real, fresh clams—not canned—and the tuna was cooked to perfection and as fresh as any I’ve had. The whole family really enjoyed the experience and had a great time. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area, and I’ll absolutely be back next time I’m around.

The food was as good as expected. There were a lot of parking meters outside. It seemed to have free 15 min parking just for to-go order pick up. We dined in for about one hour, and it’s enough time. The pizza and wings were good. My seafood medley was very tasty. The squid ink pasta just tasted like pasta, but I was glad that I tried it so I wouldn’t need to wonder.

We recently hosted my husband's surprise 40th birthday party at Sono Wood Fired for about 45 guests, and it was an incredible experience from start to finish. The owner, Bes, was an absolute pleasure to work with — professional, accommodating, and genuinely invested in making the afternoon special. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made sure everything ran smoothly. And the food? Absolutely delicious. The variety of pizzas was a hit, and people couldn’t stop talking about the mac & cheese and wings — both were standout favorites. Everyone left full, happy, and already planning their next visit. I would highly recommend Sono Wood Fired for any gathering or night out, and I’d absolutely host an event here again. Thank you to Bes and the entire team for making it such a memorable celebration!

Google
Definitely best pizza I have ever had and I been to the greats, Pepes and Sally's and they can't touch this. Just awesome!! It's that kind of pizza when you open the box u know that u are in for a real treat. Great job and staff very polite and welcoming. Got the bacon pizza and pepperoni. Can't wait to try the pasta that is baked in wood oven.

Wonderful place. The food was amazing, starting with calamari, pasta, French fries, and the pizza, of course. The service was outstanding, and the young lady who served our fam. certainly were able to maintain the bar and provide great service was impressive. Our little ones enjoyed the food, and we certainly recommend this place for anyone visiting the Acquarium. Clean place, and was quite amused by the picture in the restroom of Decaprio. Awesome.

Google
Amazing atmosphere and eclectic arts. The pizza was to die for. Wonderful family atmosphere it is a family owned business. I met the daughter. She was very gracious! love all the art in the place and the food is delicious. I tried the cappuccino. The cannoli is wonderful and the pizza. I got the classic New Yorker with pepperoni it melted in my mouth, the crust was amazing, including the pasta with egg noodles with Ragu steak it was clearly amazing from start to finish, I paired my food with a grapefruit juice and sparkling water. The entire meal was so memorable! I will be back certainly.

Google
Food was off the charts imaginative and tasted so sophisticated I can’t say enough. Now if you are gluten intolerant they import their flour from Europe so it is safe for pizza lovers Go for it and you will be thrilled as I Am.

Recommended to everyone, everywhere. This is a hidden gem! The atmosphere is amazing, very welcoming. There's a giant wood fire oven to the right that brings a warm ambiance to the place. I ordered the Clams Rockefeller special. It was delightfully flavorful, with a light spinach and cream sauce. The sauce reduction was perfection, not too thick, not to runny! Don't forget to sprinkle the lemon, it complimented the clams so well! The very thin and light crumb on top added an extra crunch! I eat slow, can you believe i ate those babies under 4 minutes? every bite was even better than the previous one. I also ordered the Lady Cluck Panini. The menu is filled with puns that really compliments the friendly environment of the servers. Fries were great, not greasy and not overly cooked. Soft and warm when I received them. The chicken cutlet was soft and juicy, very thingy crusted, 100% respect to the chef for giving me a good portion of meat in my sandwich. My whole experience was a delight. It's literally a great place to eat, and great place to go and eat again. Definitely try it out, many times! 10/10!

Yelp
This restaurant has it all: AI-generated Bill Murray portraits; pizza names with Wu Tang puns; graffiti-art of Anthony Bourdain; Edison bulbs; inept oil paintings featuring a totally arbitrary selection of dead celebrities; pizza-themed Banksy rip-offs; and a Root Beer Float that costs as much as a Uniqlo t-shirt!

Yelp
Really glad to have this gem in the neighborhood. Everything I've ever tried from their menu has been absolutely delicious. The beet salad with fried goat cheese and citrus dressing is one of my favorites; along with the mac and cheese, mozz sticks, pizza, etc. Inside vibes are warm and cozy. Also, they know customer service and can teach some businesses a lesson or two on it - each time I've dined in I've had the pleasure of talking to the nicest people running the scene. Shelly is the sweetest and always takes great care of us, and the owner Bes is always extremely welcoming and greets every table individually. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I checked out Apizza Spot recently. The pizza was alright, but it was a little undercooked. The mac and cheese, though -- that was straight-up delicious. The place was clean, and the staff were really kind, which I appreciated. It is a bit pricey for what I got, so I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come back, but that mac and cheese might pull me in again.

Yelp
"You say you don't like it But girl, I know you're a liar 'Cause when we kiss, oh Fire" (Bruce Springsteen) Want some wood fired shrimp? How about wood fired chicken? Or wood fired mac and cheese, or wood fired wings, or wood fired meatballs, pizza or even salmon. You can get them all and a lot more at Sono Wood Fired. We had a very nice lunch for three yesterday. When we walked in two cool things on the dining room walls caught our attention. The first was a version of Banksy's iconic Girl with Red Balloon, but the balloon had been replaced by a big round pizza, that was very clever and very cool. The other thing was a painting of music icons (Lennon, Hendrix, Sinatra, Marley, Elvis, etc.) on a dining room wall over a table. Our lunch order was a Pizzaria Salad ($11) with Field Greens, Olives, Pepperoncini, House Lemon Dressing and an "Add On" of Wood Fired Calamari ($7), a Lady Kluck Panini ($17) with a Chicken Cutlet, Fresh Mozzarella, Mayo, Arugula, Fire Roasted Herb Cherry Tomatoes, Onions, Basil Tapenade, and a side of fries, and a Chicken Parmigiana ($25) with Marinara and Mozzarella over Bucatini pasta. My salad was delicious. The calamari was cooked perfectly and not at all tough or rubbery I passed on the salad dressing and just had their marinara sauce on the side and that was excellent. The Lady Kluck was a big sandwich, and the Chicken Parm was enormous, and portions of both came home with us. Service from Sebastian was prompt, friendly, and highly professional. We were very impressed with our visit to Sono Wood Fired.

Yelp
Just left. Amazing pizza, calamari and friendly service. Wish I lived closer. Great beer selection.

Yelp
Very good pasta nice people I had penne al vodka very good I got chicken in it aswell can't wait to make a trip back here !

Yelp
Their pasta is great... but their s'mores dessert was INCREDIBLE, and the reason I keep coming back. It's baked in a little cast iron skillet with marshmallow and chocolate and it is so amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
Very mid alas. Clam pasta nice flavor and texture but over done clams and very watery broth. No technique to create an emulsification with pasta water and wine and oil. Anyhoo, vodka pasta best pick. Brussels app was nice. To be fair we didn't try a pizza and perhaps that's where this place sings (and not the singing obnoxious drunk people behind us). Very friendly efficient staff. The place needs a signature show stopping dish to get people coming. Totally possible.

Yelp
YES to Take out! Ok. So this place was on point!!! Food was amazing and the pasta cooked to perfection. The fig and prosciutto pizza was amazing!!! Figs on pizza, who would have thunk that. lol. Service was friendly and on point. The prices were also reasonable. Due to timing, had a drink at the Bar and chatted with the bartender , friendly and on point. This is an awesome place and I really am looking forward to checking it out for a good sit down meal!!! Strongly recommended here!!!

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink and snack before our movie - sat at the bar - love this space! Fiddlehead white ale was yummy and I grabbed a charcuterie plate of prosciutto, burrata and Reggiano (so I could bring half to the theater with me lol). The star of the plate was the (assuming house made) focaccia with olives. I want to order just that right now - I dreamt about it last night - super amazing. Hubs had pappardelle but devoured it before I could sneak a taste lol Everyone who works here is super nice and everything came out rather quickly - definitely a plus when rushing to make a movie. Excited to come back and try the pies - or just a whole platter of focaccia :-)

Yelp
The waiting staff were amazing enough space to enjoy "company" but never an empty plate on the table or water glass either. Pizza was delicious my wife's braised beef was amazing as well. They can expect a return visit.

Yelp
I come here about once every other week and I have to say it is one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. Normally I get a pizza or a panini if I've come for lunch, or I will get a pasta if I've come for dinner. I love how they make the bread for the paninis in the pizza oven, really keeps everything feeling fresh. The service is great and the vibe is really nice inside, especially around the bar area. One other thing I didn't walk in expecting were the wings. I came here a few times during March Madness and thought they were awesome.

Rhonda J.

Yelp
The food and drinks were very good. I didn't know about the 'personal size pizza' and since it was 3 of us I was anticipating sharing a large pizza and at $16.00 a pop I quickly changed my mind. Drink was very good.

Yelp
EVERYTHING went well Ambiance, service, food & a great (seasonal) cocktail I've been 4 times & will definitely be going back

Yelp
I am in town for my son's auditions here in beautiful Norwalk, CT. Having recently come from Italy last summer, I was craving pizza in the traditional style of Napoli. There aren't too many of this style of pizza from where I live so I make it a point to seek it wherever I go. Ambience of the restaurant is nice. Definitely a casual dining restaurant. The owner is a very nice and personable, as was his sister and our server. They brought out water, freshly baked bread and olive oil. I had a cup of their New England clam chowder. Tasted wonderful. Not to the level of where I went to Boston, MA but it was still excellent. The crowning achievement was the Napoli style Margherita pizza. The crust was perfectly made. The sauce, cheese and spices were perfect. I was very pleased. I'm here for a few more days, and I have to make it back for another pizza. It was done just like from the "Old country" in Naples, Italy. Great restaurant. Great food!

Yelp
Got two pizzas to go from Sono Wood Fired and was looking forward to them on the basis of all the good reviews. I was disappointed. First both pizzas were undercooked. The crust was limp, the tomato sauce was still relatively uncooked. We put it in the air fryer to help it. Plus while it was waiting for our pickup it just sat out and was not kept warm. We need good pizza and sadly I was not impressed at all.

Yelp
I read an article about this place months ago and so wanted to try. The chef and owner, Kaba, loves to cook things on an open fire and the pizzas are Neopolitan style. My fave! I was in the area and while I really wanted to experience the pizza in house, time and other constraints led me to order the baked Brie---which I am not sure where you can get anywhere else. The dish was beautifully presented in a cast iron skillet, focaccia bread on the side. The focaccia bread was magnificent alone and so complimentary with the Brie. This is definitely a dish I would recommend sharing with others and other accompanying appetizers. The place had a slight rustic yet modern feel. Wooden tables and flooring, live plants, great natural lighting. The restrooms were clean and well kept .Wood floors needed a sweeping. Service was o.k. but I arrived in the in between time of lunch and dinner so sure lots of prep going on behind the scenes. On street parking in front or in lot behind-which is free. I will be back to try the pizza for sure!

Yelp
Good not Great. On a friday in lent we went for some non-meat food. So we had some fried calamari, a classic New Yorker pizza and some cacti e pepe with shrimp. Pizza sauce was good but crust was not crisp. Just flopped over when picked up. The calamari was average, not special. The cacio e pepe did not have the flavor we're used to. Service was great. It's in a great location across from the movie theatre. There are so many good italian restaurants in Norwalk and they did not rise to their level. If taking in a movie across the street you can grab a bite to eat or grab a drink at the bar.

Yelp
Sono Wood Fired has only been open a short while, but it will easily become a neighborhood favorite. I dined here with friends last night and all I can say is this eatery is nothing short of phenomenal. Everything is made with high quality and mostly organic ingredients. The calamari appetizer we shared was lightly breaded and fried. Delicious marinara sauce. Sheer perfection. We all had our own pizzas. I don't eat pizza that often, but the goodness you see pictured that is the Figgy Smalls white pie made my palate beyond ecstatic. Service was a little slow but pleasant. Good drinks. If you're not into pizza, there are other items on the menu that come from the owner's recipes. (Said owner is a super nice guy, by the way.) There is free parking behind the building. Please do yourself a favor and experience this hidden gem next time you're in SoNo!

Yelp
Came here around 2:30p. I initially walked by the restaurant, but then immediately started to crave pizza. I walked in and sat at the bar. Given I've never been here before, I went for the Margherita - my baseline pizza - and it was great! I was definitely craving more pizza after I finished my personal pie. The staff was very friendly and engaging. I highly recommend stopping by for pizza if you're in the neighborhood. I look forward to future visits!

Paul J.

Yelp
This restaurant is exceptional! The ambiance is cozy and clean. The mozzarella sticks appetizer is outstanding as well as the Eggplant tower highly recommend both. We had short ribs and rigatoni pasta with grilled chicken for dinner. Both dinners were flavorful and excellent. This place is a neighborhood gem! Kudos to SoNo Wood Fired and team!

Tiku N.

Yelp
Great food and service. The pizza is phenomenal! Definitely a place I'll be coming to often.

Binjamin M.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. The pizza is out of this world and this is coming from a pizzaman. The place is very welcoming and the atmosphere is great. Definitely a must try if you're close the area.

Yelp
Ordered their mushroom pizza. It was tasty. Service was very good. Kinda of a dark atmosphere.

Yelp
The service was great food was good. Only the pizza were inconsistent one was crispy rate 6.7 and other was floppy I rank it 5.9

Yelp
Honest to God I never like to leave reviews like this one unless I feel like I need to speak out. The waitresses here are super judgemental and it gave racist vibes. From the moment I walked in, the waitress that we got (Floreta K) did not greet us at all and we waited for someone else to sit us down. From the first interaction, Floreta was definitely giving me attitude and it felt that way the whole night. By the time I paid my bill, I obviously did not tip this lady a good tip because she was just flat out cold and rude. But if I started to act out then I would be the problem. She definitely started showing the receipt to her other waitress friends and thought that I didn't notice. Good service and good people get great tips from me because I don't hold out on that . I give credit where credit is due. But bad service and people who give me attitude and expect to get a 20% tip from me must be out of their minds. So maybe if she learns how to be nice and provide the same service to ALL customers regardless of their race, then maybe she would've gotten a better tip from me. I will not be going back to this location because of Floreta K , I do not support any locations where the waitress/waiters are being racist.

Steven L.

Yelp
We are big fans. Wood fired, Napoli style pizza. In a town with so much pizza passion and even controversy, I am surprised this place isn't mentioned as a great spot more often. It is still pretty new, perhaps. Check it out! The non-pizza aps, pasta, entrees are all pretty good, too. Good service, friendly casual vibe, but much better ambience than a "take out" place. Pretty neighbor-hoody, nice crowd. Usually a good playlist on the sound system.

Yelp
It's all about the dough... Once you have had hand-made wood-fired pizza hot out of the oven it is hard to go back to normal crap. And of course the competition in lower Fairfield County for your hard-earned pizza dollars is tough, but... I will be back! Open now for about three months I figured any kinks had been worked out. The service was sharp and knowledgeable, (studied psychology...) the menu a tad above the expected, but it is always all about the pizza, right? Outstanding. Creative house combinations of toppings (we tried a couple...), good balance, but... it is all about the dough. Light and airy, modest fermentation, a perfect base for what was on top. Did I say it before? I will be back. Things to think about as they strive for perfection? Watch the decibels on the background music (great bar, BTW) and, a big pet peeve, serve a Martini in a the right glass, not the same glass as you would serve a champagne cocktail in. Oh, and consider a "country club pour" at the prices you charge. Enjoyed the evening and the food. Hope they do well.
google avatar

Danny L.

Yelp
Oh my God. Wowwwww Food here was incredible. The pizza was delicious and the pasta and just everything. They don't have great signage so you can walk right by and not know it's there, but don't pass it by. Service was great and very cute inside. We had the figgy smalls. Incredible. Mac and cheese to die for. Rigatoni a la vodka WOW. Will be back again and again

Gina Z.

Yelp
We stopped in after the aquarium. What a great place. Very friendly staff. The food was outstanding. Leave room for dessert. We get back to the area this will be a definite go.
google avatar

Marissa D.

Yelp
Terrible service, there was one lady working the whole restaurant. We had kids with us and she brought out their food after everyone had already eaten. They also forgot to give us a ceasar salad that we ordered. Food is mediocre. She also yelled at us stating that we need to keep better eyes on our kids. We will never be returning.
google avatar

Bennett F.

Yelp
Nothing is worse than a restaurant who's website says it's open till 9:30 only to get there at 8:41 only to be told the kitchen is closed!!! 2 stars because it was good enough to try and return!

Alivia G.

Yelp
Rigatoni Alla Vodka was top 3 best I've had. Also, Alex the bartender made the whole experience even better. So so happy with the environment and food.
google avatar

Alane D.

Yelp
This is such a find! We can't wait to return. Great service. Excellent food. We had a NY pizza, charred crust. Perfecto! But the best was their pappardelle! Delicious sauce with short rib meat. Best we have ever had. Great drinks, including a smoked old fashioned. Very nice atmosphere.

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Run don't walk here. Literally can't beat the combo of creative, delicious food and flawless service. Find me another place where the owner and staff are this committed to being a part of the neighborhood and spending time with customers without compromising food service speed. Every time friends come to SoNo or want a rec, this has become THE spot.

Yelp
Local go-to for dining-in, and to-go; reliably delicious, nothing is over-saturated, ingredients are simple, but proper. Welcoming, and genuinely inviting energy. Highly recommended. #1

Yelp
The food is amazing especially the wood fired wings and the pizza. Very nice owner and top notch service!

Kat G.

Yelp
My family walked here after visiting the aquarium for my son's first birthday. The food was really good and the staff was helpful, attentive, and welcoming. We were seated at a table that could best accommodate a stroller for my 1 year old baby. We got an eggplant appetizer which was great! We got a special pizza that my mom said was the best pizza she had in a while. My husband and I got the braised short rib with mushroom risotto and I shared mine with my baby who thought it was amazing and yelled "mumumzz" before and after each bite. The short ribs were very tender and flavorful. We also got cannolis and the s'mores for 2. We will definitely recommend this place to others and will be returning.

Meegan D.

Yelp
First off the focaccia is yummy. Meatballs app was really tasty. Ordered Classic pizza and parpadella with short ribs to share and both were delicious and a lot of food.
google avatar

Nick Z.

Yelp
Such a blast. Bes & the rest of the team were accommodating, friendly, took the time to say hi & shake our hand on the way out And of course, the pizza was bomb. What more do you want? We drove ~1 hr each way for this & was well worth it.

Yelp
I used to live in Italia, and I'll say the pizzas here remind me of my fav little pizzeria in Firenze!!! Bravo!!!

Yelp
SoNo Wood Fired is such a great addition to South Norwalk! LOVE the pizzas and the creative, fresh toppings. Our family enjoys takeout from SWF on the regular and it always arrives hot! Highly recommend!

Janice G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food and great service. I haven't had pizza this good since we were in the city. Also, the Nutella pizza is SO GOOD. Will definitely be back.

Brielle R.

Yelp
This place has great pizza! Love that they have a bunch of apps and entrees too. The service, drinks and atmosphere are all wonderful. Large space too!

R David L C.

Yelp
Awesome wood fired pizza! I got the base New York, and added pepperoni, sausage, olives, garlic, and hot honey. The dough is magnificent and chewy!

Janet D.

Yelp
Great service and the owner is very nice and attentive. We loved the Caesar salad and the rigatoni with vodka sauce. It's a little loud. Our pizza was very good but could have been cooked a little longer. We will defititley go back.and try some other things.
