The Best Panaderías & Pan Dulce Shops in LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Sonora Bakery isn't the largest  panadería in LA, but it's stocked with every pan dulce, cake, and baked goods you could ever want. Most of the space in this East LA shop is occupied by tall glass displays with rows of crescent-shaped cuernitos, sweet conchas, and fresh-baked bolillo rolls to fill your tray (and Nissan Sentra) with. Sonora might be best known, though, for its custom cakes and party subs available up to 10 feet long. These gargantuan sandwiches are made with freshly baked bread and come with everything from salami, ham, turkey, and milanesa. If you're not planning to feed a gaggle of teenagers though, you can get a footlong for less than $10.   " - Sylvio Martins, Nikko Duren

Sonora Bakery - Review - East LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Sonora Bakery definitely isn’t the biggest panadería you’ll find in LA, but it’s still stocked with every pan dulce, cake, and baked good you could ever want. Most of the space in this Belvedere Gardens shop is occupied by tall glass displays filled with rows of crescent-shaped cuernitos, sweet conchas, and freshly baked bolillo rolls for you to fill your tray (and entire car) with. But Sonora is mostly known for its custom cakes, great Argentinian empanadas, and party subs that can reach up to 10 feet in length. These gargantuan sandwiches are made with freshly baked bread and come with everything from salami, ham, and turkey to breaded veal for those who enjoy the occasional milanesa. If you’re not looking to feed a Super Bowl party or your teenage son’s chess team, sandwiches for one are also on the menu for a solid $5.99." - Sylvio Martins

Google
Have had a lot of good pan dulce and this place is near the very top. You can taste how fresh the bread is right away. So flavorful! Also was glad there was enough space to walk around. Small parking lot in the back.

Google
For many years, this Panadería has been serving fresh pan dulce, cakes, sandwiches, champurrado and many more traditional latin food, authentic and well prepared. I love coming to this place regularly and enjoy their delicious pastries, coffee, champurrado, and more.

Google
Really good cakes. The pan Dulce is good, not the best but good. But the cakes I tried were very good. Whit cake with strawberries and chocolate cake with strawberries 👍. Everyone enjoyed them. There’s long lines but service is very fast. They are open a little later than other bakeries in the area too.

Google
Always wanted to try this bread. Went in today bought two Bolillo with cream cheese and 3 breads 4 cookies was Charged $24.90. This place is a rip off I could have gone to El Gallo and got 2 big bags of bread for $24. So disappointed in this place.

Hugo Aguas

Google
Delicious Bakery in East LA, but beware- it gets busy. They have tres leches, tamales, and pan dulce. The price was, also, very reasonable. They have parking.

Yelp
I am not a cake person, have never liked 3 leches... This place makes it delicious the Vanidoso Cake the Best This is the only place I go for cakes.

Yelp
We ordered a 6ft sub for our son's birthday party. The portions are large, pre sliced and absolutely delicious. Order 1 day and advance and enjoy. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This place smells like heaven....bread heaven! I was asked by a friend to order a submarine sandwich and they did not disappoint!! We ordered the 2 Foot turkey and cheese submarine sandwich with all the toppings! It came on their signature bolillo bread and it was delicious! It also stayed well and never got soggy, even after hours of sitting out at our party! I highly recommend the submarine sandwich!
google avatar

Isabelle V.

Yelp
Giving another review , I love their submarine sandwiches. Their bolillo is also so good, and their beef tamales are the best! That is all I really like from this place . Re: parking, there is always parking on the side, if parking isn't available in the front of store.
google avatar

Yelp
Go early!!! They almost sell out by the end of the night and that it until the next day. The ladies are all helpful and friendly. Prices for the delicious Mexican bread is reasonable. All the bread is soft and light. Conchas are out favorite. Not sure if they have the mini conchas. They also have savory empanadas, Mexican milk jellos, choco-flan, cheese flans and cakes.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
Really yummy baked goods like Mexican breads, cakes, bollios. All items were fresh and service was fast even with a line. Their Alfafores are a main reason I come here.
google avatar

Nilza J.

Yelp
I specifically went to buy pan de muerto on 10/30/2024 at 7:30am and they had none! They had about 1/2 of the bread baked! I have as told that all the types of bread would be ready by 1pm. It's a bakery and their bread is expected to be freshly baked and ready in the morning!
google avatar

Max A.

Yelp
This place has Italian sandwiches!!! Wtf! Mortadella, prosciutto.....Capicola!!! Amazing amazing and my favorite cheesecake bread. Very hidden but noticeable, the staff always happy to help.

Janeth E.

Yelp
First time was last month 02/21/23 and I never buy this much sweat bread. Right from the beginning the bakery smelled good, they had a lot of variety to select from. I also bought a bolillo with cheese and jalapeños. I decided to share half and they were hesitant since they had never tried such combination. Must I say he was left wanting more questioning if I only purchased one! Lol My family loved their bread. Overall their service was pleasant the cashier was even patient . I was being charged & I asked if I could grab two additional pieces quickly because they were very busy. If you are ever in the area I highly recommend you making a quick stop.

Yelp
I needed some items for some authentic Mexican dishes I was preparing and even though there are tons of Panaderia's in my neighborhood I decided to go old-school so I hopped over to East Los Angeles. I found Sonora and it was perfect. The Conchas were outstanding and once I slightly headed them up it was an amazing treat with my Mexican hot chocolate. A few days later the famous tortas rolls were perfect. They held up and the tortas was one of the best presentations to date. They are a full panaderia and everything is fresh and ready to go. Parking is on the street or in the back of the business.

Karina M.

Yelp
Muchas Gracias a Sonora Bakery y a todo su equipo por esta obra les agradezco que lo hayan hecho como les pedí y el sabor súper delicioso 100% Recomendado

Yelp
Go to for pan dulce hands down. It's like crack. Elotes and cuernitos bomb! But there submarines are a must for any event. Perfect for birthday parties or any occasion. 3ft,4ft, 5ft whatever u need. Perfect blend. And the owner is a very attentive to all his customers.

Yelp

Anita M.

Yelp
Always good here. I ordered a tres leches cake, half she's is huge. I also bought a chocoflan. Both were so good. They were a little busy during pick up but they were very attentive and informed us right away that they'd be right with us. Parking sometimes is a challenge but majority of the time, I find parking in their parking lot. Love this basket!!

Yelp
ALWAYS GIVE CREDIT TO THE LOCAL PAN DULE PLACES WHERE ITS DUE! I have now been here on and off with my grandma/family for years, and it is truly one of the best bread places I've ever been to. My favorite is the jalapeño bolio with cream cheese! Good lord, they're a heavenly way to gain a few pounds but you'll be on cloud 9 while you do it, Hahahaa. The cakes are amazing, the Jalapeño and cream cheese are my all time favorite, and ALL of the sweet breads are fresh and never stale! ALSO, the prices are decent! I've paid a lot of money for some terrible breads. Without fail, this bread is amazing each and every time. The older ladies are always so nice to me, the selection is always so full and clean. Also, There's plenty of parking, and needless to say I will come here for the rest of my life. lol If you ever need a fat attack, a mouth-orgasm, or a party sweet treat, here is your one stop shop!

Vivianna M.

Yelp

Bleidy V.

Yelp
Be careful when using debit here I went and got over charged on my debit card not for a few dollars or a few hundreds more like a couple of thousands. Check your receipt.

Maritza P.

Yelp
Very good cake, I always buy my cakes there The bread is good , I recommend it 100 The chocoflan is delicious
google avatar

Yelp
When your in charge of bringing the Pan Dulce to your company potluck...you drive to East Los and get it here! Always fresh. Soft and great tasting!

Yelp
If you haven't purchased a cake from Sonora Bakery yet, you must!! I needed a mail hojas cake last minute. They were the only bakery within a 15 mile radius willing to accept my 1/4 sheet cake or order 58 hours in advance. Most bakeries either don't make it or need a 1 week notice. I was not disappointed with the flavor and texture of the cake. This is definitely my go-to bakery for any good quality great tasting cakes!

Lupita R.

Yelp
We've been coming to Sonora Bakery for many years. It is our go-to bakery for delicious Mexican pan dulce and bolillo. They also have a great selection of (ready-to-go) desserts, such as, jello, choco-flan, flan, fruit tarts, cakes, etc. Definitely recommend their fruit tart! It's delicious and loaded with lots of fruit. Their prices are reasonable, and the employees are friendly and helpful. They have a small parking lot on Whittier Blvd and a few more spots on Ford Blvd; or there's also street parking.

Jacky G.

Yelp
There subs are delicious !!!!!! And sweet bread oh man everything there is delicious I just bought a small mocha tres leches cake hopefully it's good I count 3 ladies that work there that are beyond nice and have great customer service there are some old ladies that are straight out rude and look at you like you're dumb and they won't bother to ask you if you need help I'm still giving it 5 stars because it's not the other ladies fault that they want to be rude

Yelp
I still cannot believe the artistry! My mother loved pan dulce so I had an arrangement made for her funeral. I had an idea in my head and Mr. Sosa, the baker, was able to make it real from just a short conversation over the phone. I had asked at other bakeries but they said they could not do it. This work of art exceeded my expectations. Not only did it look great, it tasted and smelled great, too. It was completely made of "pan dulce." My mother would have loved to eat it. Everyone at my mother's viewing was able to enjoy a "conchita" in her honor and I am certain that nobody will ever forget that beautiful "conchita" arrangement.

Yelp
Great Submarine and Turkey sandwiches, you can order from 2 foot to a 6 foot. Perfect for office and parties. Also, the jalapeño and cheese bread are a favorite.
google avatar

Angelica R.

Yelp
Thank you Sonora Bakery. You did not disappoint ‍. Beautiful Wedding Cake and delicious! Patricia and Martha were attentive and so helpful taking my order. The 14 inch was Strawberry and Banana. The 10 inch was Mango and Apricot. Everyone enjoyed it. Will definitely order again.

Yelp
I was introduce to the tres leches cake here! I've only tried the tres leches though. It is the best cake I've every had!

google avatar

Yelp
They the Milanese sandwich. It is made with fresh bollio, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. They also make it with chicken breast. The sandwiches are made with great quality meat. The pan dulce is great too.

Yelp
Bought a tres leches cake yesterday 2/14/2022 and it was horrible , this was my second time purchasing from this bakery... I will never go back ! I Horrible cake!

Cas A.

Yelp
The bread here is overpriced, though n my opinion. They don't have visible signage that shows the price for each piece of pan dulce, so you don't know how much your total will be I til it's all bagged up, by then it's too late! We went and came out with about ten piece of bread and my total was nearly $28. Really?!! Never again. The bread is t even that great. It's mediocre, at best. I've had better bread for less money. I won't be coming here again.

Ana R.

Yelp
i would give it 0 stars if I could. cakes have been sitting there all day and they have flies flying around in fridge!!!
google avatar

Julio M.

Yelp
Excellent bread and tortas! Having been coming for years even though I moved out of the neighborhood many years ago. The elotes bread is the best.
google avatar

Rosa G.

Yelp
Ordered a cake for our 25th anniversary. It was delicious and beautiful! However I do have a complaint. The little flowers with a diamond in the center should NOT be used as decoration on a cake! A couple of my guests took a bite of their cake and almost cracked a tooth with the little diamond-like stone AND got poked inside their mouth with the wire that was used to insert it onto the cake! Please! Couldn't all parts be eatable??? The flower is eatable, but why put a wire in it? This is so DANGEROUS!!! Plus, if that ornament was absolutely necessary, at least tell the person who picked it up to remove the little flowers before distributing the cake slices!!!! Very very disappointed as this had NEVER happened to us before! We always order cakes from this bakery because it truly is the best, but after these evil incidents that ruined our special night, I will have to refrain from ever doing business with this bakery again!
google avatar

Gia N.

Yelp
We always order a Submarino Gigante from Sonora Bakery for work a few times a year and it never disappoints. The sandwich is tasty and reasonably priced. Sometimes I order the sandwich a day before and I haven't had any issues when I pickup. Just make sure you have a car big enough when you pickup if you order the bigger sizes. They have a few parking spots in front but most of the time I end up parking in their lot on side of the bakery. One of the employees carried out the sandwich to my car this last time. The sweet bread is super delicious and fresh at the bakery. The smell of the bread as soon as you walk in makes you forget about the calories the bread has. Our family has had cakes and desserts from this bakery as well and we've never been disappointed. The only reason why I didn't give them 5-stars is because the customer service is consistently inconsistent. They really just want to get you in and out as fast as they can and I can't be too mad at them for it. Everything they have to offer makes up for their customer service.
google avatar

Yelp
This was my 1st time trying this place out. First off ..... we're in a pandemic right now. This place made me feel really safe and all employees were taking great precautions. The moment you walk in you are greeted by the women that will help you grab your bread etc. ( no longer self serve ) .She does inform you to please add hand sanitizer, which they provide . She then stays 6 feet way while you tell her which breads etc you would like from the case. She then takes your items to the cashier to pack your stuff and charge you. After my stuff was packed up and ready to be charged . I handed the cashier cash and she then changed her set of gloves to just handle the cash transaction part. That was great!!! Great job to this panadería for keeping their employees and customer as safe as possible .

Jasmin I.

Yelp
I recently ordered an 8 ft sub sandwich from them and it was delicious! Our party guests loved it.

Elisabel S.

Yelp
I got a last minute cake for my mothers BDay and it was horrible. All my guess where gross out by it as it had a funny after taste . When I tried it tasted as it was spoil and sour so nasty by far the worst cake I had .. for the money I spend on that cake I will never order from here again.. it's a ripe off for the locals that come here .. Porto's is way better and way better prices.. also that lady's are rude ..

Erika M.

Yelp
I had never purchased from here before but based on good reviews, I decided to go with this place for my brothers baby shower cake. Upon arrival there was a lady there who was arguing with the managers about her cake being messed up and demanding a refund. They brushed her off and she told me not to place an order with them unless I wanted my event ruined. I was ready to leave but my mom insisted we order from here since we were already here. The "baker" took our order and went over details with us and told us it would be ready on the day we agreed on and that everything would be fine. Fast forward to the day of the event, I get a call around 2pm (agreed pick up time was 3pm) that the baker accidentally broke the custom made elephant topper and if we could pick up the cake until 5:30. The event was from 1-6pm there was no way I was going to go until 5:30. We had placed an order for a submarine as well so we decided we were going at 3pm to pick everything up. I get there and let the lady know that im here to pick up my cake and I'll be taking it without the cake topper as it is not a big deal. Turns out, SHE LIED. The baker had forgot to make my cake and was rushing to get it done right then and there! The lady was embarrassed that she got caught in a lie she made me feel bad for her so I decided to just come back later. I returned around 4:45 and the staff decided they were all going to act busy and ignore me. So at this point I walked to the back and told them I needed my cake or a refund. The lady then walks out with my cake and even helps me take it to the car. The cake was LITERALLY falling apart. There wasn't even a "good side" we could use just for the photos the whole cake was damaged. I contacted the bakery and asked to speak to the managers and to this day have not heard back. 400$ for a cake that looks like I got it at the 99 cents store. If you want a custom cake made, this place is NOT it. They have horrible customer service as well. ‍

Arlette C.

Yelp
Their champurrado is one if the best I've had!!! I like the procedure they have in place. You wait outside in line and one of the employees lets you in to comply with covid protocols and safe social distancing. Once you're inside you browse their bread selections and you tell the employee what you want. She puts your goods in a tray and takes it to the register. You are not allowed to touch the bread or open the containers. I like this procedure because it minimizes unnecessary contamination from the general public. The bread is delicious and they have a really good variety of goods.
google avatar

Roger A.

Yelp
Great local bakery with a big selection. I actually like the Sandwiches they make and they have party size ones also. They sweet bread is also good and I've tried their cakes in the past. No complaints other than they are a little extra with the Covid-19 protocol.
google avatar

Ernie A.

Yelp
It was a mad house today! Packed with customers, but worth the hassle. Try to avoid the weekend crowds if possible. The best Mexican Bakery in Los Angeles, they're continuously baking so they always have plenty of fresh pan dulce/sweet bread, empanadas/turn overs, and cookies. It's also a deli offering tortas/Mexican sandwiches. They also make giant submarine sandwiches from two feet, to ten feet long. The ten footer is $130.00 Perfect for a kid's party. They make a gorgeous carrot cake for $26.00 Birthday cakes, wedding cakes, flan, gelatin cups... Spanish is the primary language, I always speak in Spanish there. There's a long narrow parking lot on the west side of the building with ten spaces including the first one which is a handicapped space. Enter the lot via Whittier Boulevard, exit via the alley at rear.

Pina P.

Yelp
Parking: they have their own parking lot but it's packed most of the time. Love their breads, all them. Cakes are good and they make bachelorette cakes as well Tamales are ö-right but my mom loves them. Business enforces COVID rules The end

Glc C.

Yelp
I buy there 2ft submarino. Took it to work for a pot lock and everyone enjoyed it. Can never go wrong ordering it.
