Alejandro Castillon Opens Taqueria In Former Hasty Tasty Location | Eater Twin Cities

"I note that Castillon first opened Sonora Grillas as a taco stand in 2011 that grew into a full restaurant with chef Conrado Paredes; Castillon sold his stake near the end of last year." - Joy Summers

We just came here the first night we arrived at our Hotel and didn’t wanna go out after a very long flight. Surprisingly it exceeded our expectations! The brisket Tacos were very very delicious! The staff were also incredibly welcoming and efficient. Would definitely come back to try their other items on the menu.

Google
Lovely restaurant with delicious food! Ambiance is excellent with open window indoor/outdoor seating. All the dishes I ordered were tasty and fresh! Highly recommend the steak tacos and beet and feta appetizer. Service was amazing with friendly staff. Javier took care of me and went out of his way to provide a wonderful meal! English menus provided which was appreciated. Everything priced very reasonably. The free ice cream at the end was a nice touch! Highly recommend this place! 10/10

Google
The restaurant and service is 10/10. I think our mistake was ordering things that weren’t steak. Expensive boring tacos that were nothing special. The pichana was more like shredded beef.. one of the queso dishes was left untouched. We did get a steak that was really good. They come with a grill and turn on a fire so that was entertaining.. complementary drinks and bean and cheese appetizers that were decent and we appreciate it

Google
This was an excellent dining experience! The staff was attentive and friendly. There was English menus and staff spoke some English. We ordered way too much food! Tacos were good but nothing special. I ordered a gin and tonic which came with strawberries. It was also 2 for 1 so near the end of my meal a waiter brought out another cocktail. It was a pleasant surprise. I would recommend this place for a nice dinner out!

Google
My first visit here was incredible! Alan and his co-worker provided outstanding service and made our dinner feel special. The steak was perfectly cooked soft and buttery and the shrimp with queso fundido was absolutely fire. My daughter and I had a fantastic evening. Highly recommended!. I will be visiting again very soon.

Joel was amazing! Very attentive and pleasant. The food was delicious. I recommend this restaurant. I came here to celebrate my birthday and had a great time.

Google
Overall a bit disappointed. Steak was pretty good, but nothing amazing for the price. Aguachile wasn't spicy or particularly flavorful, and the truffled potatoes were outright bad. Service was good. But for the price point, I had higher expectations. Wouldn't choose to come here again.

Google
Been there before and food was much better. It was sad to see my plate looking so sad even if I sent it back once (wrong type of tortilla and cold). Will never order tacos ever again in this place, it was tortilla, meat and not even a single piece of onion or cilantro!

Yelp
Multiple friends recommended Sonora Grill and I was thankful for it. This location was conveniently located at the hotel we were staying at. Great ambience, steaks and stellar service.

Yelp
This restaurant is one of the most upscale restaurants that I've been to in several years. Everything from the food, service, and overall atmosphere was top notch. I ordered a Cesar salad and it was huge and loaded with tons of vegetables. Everyone else ordered the prime rib steak or some other variation of steak. From what I was told, they do steak right here. We actually had a team of servers helping us at our table. Everything was great. The restaurant was close to where we are staying, and it is a real high quality restaurant.

Yelp
The ambiance and service are top tier. The cocktails had beautiful presentation. For an appetizer we had the burnt cheese. It came with tortillas. It was super tasty! For the main course hubby ordered the Beef Wellington burger and I got Tenderloin Tacos. My husband loved his burger it even came with a live presentation. My tacos were good but super rich and a bit too oily for me. All of our food was super rich. At the end we were given complimentary limon ice cream. It was great to have after such a heavy dinner.

Yelp
Amazing service. Everything I ate was delicious. Awesome dazzling drinks and a cool atmosphere in a nice downtown area in CDMX.

Yelp
Have you ever been on vacation, feeling both your wallet and your waistline getting uncomfortably heavy? Well, look no further than Sonora Grill--it's practically a crash-course in weight loss! I made a New Year's resolution to drop a few pounds, and on day one, this fine establishment served me their signature Mango Ceviche and Wagyu. Talk about results: I started hurling right when I left the building. I'd managed to throw up eight times in half an hour, which left me parched and begging for water. Sonora Grill kindly offered me their top-shelf tap water at no charge--apparently, that's the extra kick you need to lose that stubborn holiday weight. I declined, however; I have my limits, and fainting on a sidewalk in Mexico City seemed like a much more thrilling story. Next thing I knew, I was checking into one of the most exclusive overnight accommodations in town--a local hospital. IV drips, top-notch nursing staff, an uninterrupted stay... Talk about VIP treatment! Sure, I missed out on touring the pyramids of Teotihuacan and visiting the Anthropology Museum, but just think of the money I saved by not paying for those tours. After all was said and done, Sonora Grill achieved what years of street food in India and Egypt never could: my very first hospital stay in over a decade. If you're looking for a quick, albeit extreme, way to shed a 15 pounds and pinch some pennies on sightseeing, this place has you covered. Bon appétit! P.S. They will promise you a refund and not honor it. When you do a charge back on your credit card, they will fight it! Still cheaper than Ozempic...

Yelp
This place was next to where I was staying. Granted, it's a part of the hotel so they're getting a lot of tourist who are paying top dollar for .. well, 3rd party hotel restaurant. That said. I was seated quickly upstairs on a Friday evening (good place for large parties). Lighting upstairs is dim and the seating in the front has cute string lights, but the mosquitos this time of year is killer for a girl like me. The music is bumping quite loudly, so a bit less intimate romancey, but the service is ON POINT. They have plenty of staff and tend to you quickly and efficiently. I must say the staff is their redeeming quality... they come over to check on me many times and even cracked a few jokes with me as I was eating alone. I was started with a refried bean dip, chips, and 4 salsas on the house. Also got the caesar salad & NY strip (classic and hard to fuck up).. well, I was quite disappointed. The steak was wayyyy under seasoned (but they brought me 4 different kinds of salt after a S&P request to season my own steak and cook it on the sizzling plate it came out on). In contrast, the Caesar was overloaded with toppings and extremely salty from the amount of cheese on it. While I needed something just quick and nearby, I wouldn't recommend coming here out of all the places in CDMX unless you're in dire need like me. It's nothing special, below par really, and it is definitely overpriced. I imagine it's where a HS prom date would go to feel fancy but in reality, it's an upscale Cheesecake Factory.

Yelp
google avatar

Yelp
All the appetizers we had were fantastic! Drinks were amazing, and dessert was amazing. The steak itself was good but not fantastic. If it had some sort of sauce type option to go with would have helped a lot, felt also under seasoned surprisingly since everything else had such hood flavor. I'd go back for sure but maybe just go to town on things other than the steak.

Yelp
We came to Sonora Grill with an Anniversary Party, and they laid on the fun! First, I have to recommend the mixology menu - I got the Carribean Colada, with rum, pineapple, lemon and coconut juices, and it came in a half coconut shell with dry ice fog floating out of the shell. We tried nearly everything on the menu from huge steaks to tacos and octopus. Even the chips and queso were elevated. And of course, they brought out a series of desserts, one with a sparkling firework shooting out as the staff sang happy anniversary to our table. Sonora Grill is a fun place, especially for important events. Definitely a recommendation for anyone looking for fancy dining in CDMX!

Yelp
The food was excellent, the service was incredible. And the vibe was 10/10. Would recommend anyone to come here!

Yelp

Yelp
Was seated very quickly (around 9:30pm). It's a very loud environment, there was a DJ (just played whole songs though not like an actual party DJ), there's a lot of staff in black (with ear pieces, etc.) walking around but none of them helped or stopped (or made eye contact when I was trying to order/get my check). The chairs were pretty uncomfortable, the bench seats against the wall were better but still uncomfortable. The table had a big triangle structure on the base so there was no where to put your feet comfortably. The Monkey Fruit cocktail was delicious. The cappuccino was ok. I was going to order the ceviche but they didn't have it. They also didn't have any of the fish options available. There wasn't anything else on the menu that was very vegetarian friendly. I would think since it's an electronic menu they would remove the items they don't have available. I ordered the Mocka Cake. It's very interesting. A lot of different textures going on. I only ended up eating about 1-2 bites though. Pretty expensive place for the experience I had with the lack of options/availability of options listed. (680 pesos)

Yelp
Excellent food, drinks and service. Highly recommended if visiting Mexico City! The waiters are kind and friendly.

Yelp
Worst grill experience. Ordered the imported and expensive rybeye, a salad and wine. We requested the different flavored salts for the salad and we're totally ignored. Then it came the fancy cut with a specialized person to cut it for us in a whimsical wheeled table. What we got was the worst cut of meat and then some. This meat was crisscross with extensive runnings of tough silver and connective tissue that force you just to chew and suck the teared pieces of flesh. Very dissatisfied and disappointing. Never going back again.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. Unlimited nachos with bean and cheese dips was really good. Their steaks and other appetizers also tasted good. The atmosphere was nice with music and a lot of table side action. The staff were also friendly and service was good.

Yelp
We came in for dinner, and we had a two-year-old with us, and they took a great care of her along with us. The wines were great, and the food was solid. Service could be a little better. Between 4-5 stars.

Yelp

Guilda N.

Yelp
Food was great! Reasonable prices. Drinks were awfully expensive. Service was nice and very helpful. We didn't speak Spanish, they were very patient with us and helped us to order. Ambiance was interesting. It seems to be a happening place. DJ type music was very loud. Conversation was almost impossible.

Yelp
One of my favorites with great food, service and in my hotel, the hilton. The artichokes, beef carpaccio, Kansas City prime, bean dip and bone marrow soup over four visits in a week were delicious. The brisket for two was a awesome. The manager made churros (not on the menu) for us to take to the room. Imagine then today for lunch how service sucked, starting with flat tonic for a cocktail, and brisket served without the sides I had the first time, and had to show pictures to from the first time I ate them to show the waiter what was missing. It was such a disappointment, we are a little and left. Thought the Manager adjusted the bill 15%, we didn't come for a discount we came for a delicious meal. He might have better off inviting us back for another meal served right, but he didn't. I'd still recommend it, the food is awesome, the service and communication could be better.

Yelp
This has become one of my favorite restaurants. I was in Mexico City and it was our last day so we decided to try this restaurant. Our friends are always bragging about this place. Well, I must say, the steak, those tacos, the dessert, and the service. Everything was amazing. It's pricey but well-deserved. A few months later I traveled to Playa del Carmen and went to the Sonora there and the same service, and amazing drinks. Will be going to this place for a long time.

Yelp
We had the opportunity to visit Sonora in beautiful - busy, but very trendy Mexico City! We love Sonora and make it a point to visit. Always a pleasure to have lunch or dinner, highly recommend..!

Yelp
Food and service was amazing! My waiter went above and beyond to provide the best experience, I was extremely impressed by this place. 5 stars all around...and the asparagus wrapped in ribeye steak was out of this world!

Kevin V.

Yelp
A bad experience entirely. The music is pumped up to club levels making even loud conversation impossible. The food I ordered was unpleasant. I had the Cesar Salad which in their take is a half head of lettuce with some bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese. It didn't seem to have any dressing and frankly was a lot of work to eat. My main was pasta short ribs. The pasta was overcooked and glue like while the meat was simply greasy. The whole mess was lukewarm. I would have addressed the food issues with the server if the server ever came around but after depositing the food, I didn't see him or anyone else again until the check came. Overall, just not a good choice in a city filled with amazing restaurants.

Yelp
If you're craving a perfectly cooked, melt-in-your-mouth steak, get to Sonora Grill in Mexico City asap! We went last week for a team dinner and for my first meal in Mexico City, this place set the bar high. We started with the short rib empanadas (so good) and a drink before diving in 300g of pure bliss. Before you order, the waitstaff show you the meat options for that evening so you can get a better sense of what you're ordering. Next, prepare to be amazed by the juicy delicousness that arrives in front of you. The steaks are served with an array of different salts (my favorite was the truffle) and although not needed, the fun sauces on the table paired well with the meat too. Add some grilled asparagus and truffle fries and you've got yourself the perfect meal! But wait, there's more! After deciding to indulge in a huge slice of chocolate cake for the table, we were surprised with complimentary little ice cream cones filled with some sort of guava sorbet. Service was wonderful, the food was amazing, and I have only good things to say about this dining experience.

Yelp
Absolutely Delicious Dinner. We had a group of nine and we were all impressed with our meals and deserts. We had a wonderful time...

Suzan S.

Yelp
We got a very bad case of possible food poisoning 6 hours after eating there. We had a mushroom taco.

Yelp
Great food, great service and amazing drinks. The only down side is that the music is way too loud to be able to enjoy a relax dinner. Non the less I will still give them a 5 star review as I was not disappointed

Yelp
Came with a party of 5..Food was disappointing. The atmosphere is nice but I wouldn't come back. Service wasn't horrible but we definitely found ourselves waiting for the server. Still tipped 20% though . I would rate this 6/10 Maybe a strong 6.9/7 out of 10

Yelp
My hopes were very high, after reading reviews. High points on wine selection IMO. The downloadable menu started the indigestion. Agoura Chillies we not inspiring neither was the taste. Incomplete hard to navigate without pictures. Item description missing sense or nonsense. One item that was on the menu that was new that was offered had not been represented in the restaurant. Number one rule "Never offer" for sale if you have none to serve. My selection was a rib eye steak. Incomplete and unmanageable. Ordered medium. Expleained to waiter exactly my idea of medium...light rose colored center. FAIL. Medium here means RAW to the staff. Unfortunately it also means translation no flavor. My midevil attempts to stear the steer in one direction or another also failed when I added many different salsas. Asked for A1 and or wersteshire with blank stair. No sauce on hand. Also the Caesar salad was lacking authenticity nor flavor. Propina or tip is automatically inserted. Oh by the way your choice is 15 or 20 percent. Im sorry to say this gorgeous place will leave you lacking taste and will set your wallet empty. Take it from me, don't order steak and think it will be wonderful if taste is what your looking for, not here.

Yelp

Yelp
Wow. This restaurant left us speechless. The food is absolutely PHENOMENAL. The staff is extremely professional. The ambiance is breathtaking. Definitely recommend and hope to be back in the city again soon just to be able to eat here again.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that when I looked this place up it looked good with great service BUT unfortunately it was not even close, the only reason I'm giving it a 2 star is because of the busboy/food runners that were very nice and attentive, if you choose to go I only hope you don't get the waiter we got (Diego) was the WORST I think that guy is more into his looks then doing his job, The service " 1. He didn't explain the sauces that they put on the table you have to guess what it is, 2.not ones did he come to asking if everything was good or if we needed something else. 3.now this one blow my mind I asked for a margarita and asked to add a second shot to it he then said that "The first drink come with a second shot courtesy and the second drinks only with one shot) If I'm asking for something is because I'm going to pay for it. Now till I talked to the manager about him he then explain it differently. The Food" what we ordered 1.aqua de Chile 8/10 2.gorditas de rib eye 7/10 3. Cerretero cheese 3/10 this was supposed to be soft But it was hard we had to cut it with a knife, 4.Tomahawk 9/10 it could have been better. The only good thing we ate there was the refried beans that they put on the table with chips. For the prices in this place service should top notch or maybe it was just our bad luck to get that waiter. Would I come to this place again "NO" like that saying "you get what you paid for" unfortunately we didn't.

Yelp
Sonora Grill on Reforma would be described as a great restaurant with a nice hotel attached. In reality it is in the lobby, but the giant windows open up to the Reforma and you feel like you are in a sidewalk cafe. First time I would recommend ordering a couple of pounds of ribeye to share. Alone I would do the burger (you will be impressed) or the carnitas (bowl of guacamole topped with specially grilled beef) The videos and sound make the rest of the vibe. You WILL be distracted by the great videos backed up by a first class sound system. Makes it a bit tough to talk, but why not eat, listen and look.

Yadira P.

Yelp
We were seated promptly without reservation. I have eaten many times at Sonora grill at many locations, but this was the worst. The food was all cold except my moms steak because it was served on a piping hot skillet. The meat was over cooked and the potatoes were very salty. The fries I ordered were very stale and like they had just gathered the last scraps of fries left. The staff never asked if everything was okay after serving the food. We were eating for a good 30-45 min and my brother never received his meal even after asking about it twice. The servers had a dreadful attitude and when we complained to one of the managers about this incident to give constructive feedback he just overlooked the situation and didn't even offer to fix the situation. Would not recommend this location for good service or a good meal. For instagram worthy posts and vibes yes.

Yelp
This is a recent addition to the Krystal Hotel. It by far is one of the greatest improvements the hotel has made. This is a popular restaurant in Mexico, but one I have never been to. This restaurant is like a high end steak house. When we went there the Chief brought out a large plate with their select meats. Truly one of the most impressive things I've seen. Not sure which meat I choose but it was delicious! I ordered cream of spinach and baby potatoes as a side. The meal was amazing. As for drinks we ordered white wine. I wanted to try a margarita and asked for a Tamarindo margarita which was not on the menu. No problem the bartender made me one and it was one of the best ones I've ever had! Definitely one of the best restaurants I've been to. Oh as for the others who said the service was bad, I disagree. We went when it was extremely busy and received nothing but excellent service. Dress: Formal, to business casual. No shorts or sandals Atmosphere: Modern with loud music and video screens Cost: $$$-$$$$ I paid 120 dollars for three people

Cheryl F.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would. DO NOT EAT HERE. We all ordered New York steaks, rare and medium rare. They came out on sizzling platters, which just makes them continue to cook. Mine was medium when it was put down in front of me and medium well before I even took two bites. No one came back to see if we enjoyed our food or to ask if we needed anything else like another beverage. My dad could hardly cut his steak. There is a choice of three sides with your steak. My friend picked the truffle fries. But when the steak came, there was already potatoes with the steak so she asked if she could change it to the cream spinach because we didn't know it already came with potatoes. The waiter sent over the manager and he refused to make the exchange. That is ridiculous. In hindsight, at that point, we should've just stood up and walked out. I sent my steak back I could not eat it. When we told the manager, it was the worst food we had had in Mexico City he basically shrugged. After they cleared the entrées we sat there for almost 10 minutes. Where was our waiter? I don't know. Did we want dessert? Did we want coffee? Maybe, but nobody asked us. We asked for the bill and waited another 10 minutes to get it. We paid with cash. The waiter opened the check wallet saw that we had left just enough cash for the bill ($1475!) and asked us if we were not leaving a tip. That is unacceptable. First how did he know we were not going to leave cash on the table ( we were not, the service was terrible), but you never ask if the guest is going to leave a tip. We had several wonderful meals in Mexico City and this was by far the worst, perhaps the worst steak I've ever had. Do not waste your time or your money eating here.

Yelp
Wow! What a great dining experience! I would greatly recommend dining at Sonora Grill. The quality of the food, the quality of the service service was superb. Our waiter Carlos was attentive along with his assistant. We ordered a 900 kg porterhouse that we shared. It was cut in front of for us and then put back together for presentation. The complimentary appetizers were yummy. My mojito was over the top! There is so much to share, but I could write a few paragraphs. Stop in if ever in Mexico City. The ambience is grest for a date night. There is a non smoker and smoker enclosed room.
google avatar

Yelp
Insipid? Characterless? Perhaps the Spanish word "lamentable" is best because you are going to lament wasting a dinner here. Of course this is an uninspired, entirely chain-corporate focus-grouped Barcelo production. But the food is not just tasteless, it's awful. The salad is the blandest iceberg lettuce topped with styrofoam tomatoes, given taste only by overpowering red onions. The fries were made hours before and kept under a hot lamp -- you would do far better at McDonalds. The steak is tender, yet entirely without any of the flavors I generally associate with meat. I would be willing to call this place "inoffensive," which is pretty much Barcelo's corporate slogan, except for the music. Imagine the most annoying, overplayed pop songs of the last 50 years remixed to a boom-chucka-boom-chucka, then turned up so loud you can't hear yourself think. And as every employee told me, this is the "concept" that some corporate droid thought would create atmosphere. Ugh. Mexico City has so much more. Don't waste your time here.

Yelp
Sonora Grill is located in the lobby of the Krystal Grand Reforma hotel. I stay in the hotel quite a bit and have never had a negative experience with this restaurant. The service has been prompt and the wait staff are plenty to serve your needs. They tend to push the cocktails, which I've never tried. On this occasion, I did try their Mezcal. I was recommended one for 220Pes. and although tasty, didn't live up to the hype (I'm a scotch guy). I ordered the grilled chicken and it's a solid tasty meal (195Pes.). The chicken was tender and the vegetables were not overcooked. I would definitely return for that meal. The sauce is tasty but salty. They give you a pretty good spread of spicy sauces to accompany your meal on top of the complimentary nachos with a hot bean/cheese dipping sauce. All delicious. Good place to eat with a bustling atmosphere.

Yelp
Nice chain. Mexican grill. Everything was delicious. All liquor neat are doubles. Got a house-made strawberry ice cream after the check on the house. Salsas were really good. They warn that the hot salsas are really hot. They aren't. Well at least not to me. Loved the lemon-lime one. Don't know why they think it's hot. Maybe it's white-people spicy. Had the rib eye tacos. Perfect. Four. Had with the salsas. Would have liked some cabbage as well.

Yelp
WOW. This is really GREAT steak. It's probably the best restaurant in Mexico City. We came2 nights in a row. The tangerine salad is to die for. Not a bad selection of wine by the glass. Come for dinner you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Delicious! Excellent customer service. Recommend the aguachile-- very, very spicy. Ivan, our waiter was very nice & hooked us up.

Yelp
This very attractive place was doing so well until the bill came. More on that in a moment. This is a fine place for quasi-upscale formula Mexican food. I am no expert re this food, but can attest that everything was as advertised, if not particularly inspiring. We were greeted by a sea of smiling faces and told drinks were "2 for 1". Neither of us being heavy drinkers, we ordered 2 drinks, one for each ... you see where this is going, right? When the bill came, we were charged full freight for each drink. When we complained, we were told that EACH of us could order another free drink, but not 1 and 1. This seemed like a too clever by half gambit and we objected, loudly. After some consultation amongst the staff we were once again educated in the ways of the world, which is to say, "No". Further pissing and moaning on our part (and the certainty of no tip) convinced the waiter to adjust downward. Sadly, a nice touristy meal in Mexico City ended on a sour note. For what it's worth, the margarita was pretty ok. Steak looked awesome, though we didn't order. And the service was very attentive. Nice touch was gratis sorbet cone at the end.

Yelp
Too loud to even hear the person sitting directly next to you, let alone anyone at your table. Absolutely killed any ambiance, I had to leave. Food was fine, but definitely not worth coming here for. I recommend you choose somewhere else.

Yelp
We were blown away by this place! This experience was on par with any high-end steak house that I've been to in the USA. We were very charmed by the table-side cocktail service. They sell the steaks by the kilo, so we ordered a one kilo filet for the four of us. They were super accommodating to our different "doneness" preferences. Two of us wanted the steak medium rare, and the other wanted it well done. To satisfy everyone, they brought out a sizzling hot skillet to allow half of us to continue cooking the steak to our liking. At some point, there were like five servers at our table, cutting our steak, making us cocktails, and attending to our every need. And the best part? Our bill was only like $150 for four people to eat and drink like kings.

Yelp
This has got to be the worst place in Mexico City. If I could give it one star, I gladly would. They should really get out of the steak business and get into one they can succeed in. We got there for a reservation at 8:45 for 10 people for my birthday dinner. The first thing they said was we'd have to pay a $20 fee for the cake. We ordered and then they said that there was no more of that cut. After we had ordered a different cut, they once again came back saying they didn't have that one either. Ended up ordering ribeye and wish I never had. WORST STEAK EVER. Who appeared to be the manager came over to let us know that we could order sides and desert on the house. I mean, that's the least they could do at that point. My drink never came and I got to eat steak dying of thirst because I had to keep ordering water bottles that took years to get to us. If you'd like to ruin your birthday dinner, this is the place to go to. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!
