Searching for Bergen County’s best pastries, pies, cakes, and cookies? Just the sight of a fresh French or Italian pastry shop can activate one’s sweet tooth. From traditional flaky baked goods to epic decadent creations, look no further. Voted 2025 Best of Bergen for Place A For A Sweet Treat, my partner, our friends, and I ventured yesterday inside Sook Pastry on S Broad Street in Ridgewood for a return visit after 2 years. Upon entering the cozy seating area with six bistro tables, we were invited to wood paneling that featured the warm and inviting vibe by the light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. Pictures of bread further adorned the walls, with a shelf filled with cookies and other goodies available for purchase. A great see-through window in the back of the store is where customers can see the bakers at work in the kitchen. The staff are in back of the pastry cases filled with delicious full-sized cakes, tarts, breads, baked goods, and unique desserts. We were greeted by Gabbi and decided on the Raspberry Brioche, Peach Tart, and Tropical Tart. The pastries were light and not overly sweet. A tad pricey, but it’s authentic and delicious. The chef who owns and runs it was trained in Paris to master the art of making croissants and pastries. The service was quick and efficient. It’s no surprise that patrons like to indulge in “the finer things” in life once in a while, which we can recommend.

I love great French bakeries, and this one does not disappoint. Thankfully, their cakes and pastries are not as sweet as the average ones I've tried in recent years. With so many exquisite options on display, it was hard to choose, but the cashier was incredibly helpful. She patiently guided me through the selection, explaining which desserts were gluten-free, which were lighter, and which were richer, helping me pick based on my preferences. My husband and I decided on "The Godwin," a gluten-free hazelnut and cream cake, and "The Lincoln," a chocolate mousse cake with a liqueur-infused bottom. Choosing a favorite was tough, as both were delicious. You can truly taste the care and passion they put into their baked goods. The bakery also has a window into the kitchen, allowing you to watch the bakers prepare cakes and fresh bread. If you're in the mood for something more substantial, they offer a lovely lunch menu, including crepes, French toast (with or without proteins like eggs, bacon, or sausage), sandwiches, quiches, and soups. For gifts, they have a variety of thoughtful options like specialty chocolates, premium coffee, and boxes of their cakes and tarts. I was beyond thrilled with their decaf coffee. It was rich and bold, the perfect pairing for any of their desserts. Definitely worth the trip! The service was fast and efficient, with nine bistro tables available for seating as you enjoy your food. The ambiance is cozy, and parking is metered street parking.

One of the fine dessert place you find in NJ if you are tired of eating classic desserts and cakes. Definitely recommend this place to all desserts enthusiasts.

I got the Thai tea bubble tea. The boba is sour. I dont think the bubble was in good condition. At least I know it shouldn’t be sour.

Surprised to learn about this extremely popular and famous bakery in Ridgewood just today. It’s was relatively busy when we walked in. They have few tables to sit in the store. There’s not much space to roam around freely. They have a big collection of freshly made bread, pastries, desserts alongside serving hot and cold drinks. They also have menu for breakfast and lunch. We got some bread, flan and pastries from here. They were fantastic. Justifies all the accomplishment articles and awards I saw in the store.

Google
My long overdue visit to Sook Pastry in Ridgewood NJ didn't disappoint! Pastries were amazing. Had the apple turnover and almond croissant. Buttery, flaky and flavorful. The chocolate bomb was equally impressive. It's no wonder this bakery has such a stellar reputation. Seating was limited, and the coffee honestly could be better, but this place is all about the pastries. Definitely worth the long drive to get here - I will be back! Highly recommended you stop by here too.

Google
⸻ Although the pastries are delicious, I’ve been there twice in the last week and both times the smell of ammonia—or whatever cleaning products they’re using—was overwhelming. My friend and I actually started to feel it physically: a strange sensation in our faces, a chemical taste in our mouths, and our eyes began to water. I grabbed my muffins and left. When I got home, I put some of the muffins in the freezer. I just took one out to eat, and it still smells like the same strong ammonia or cleaning chemical. The odor is overpowering and honestly feels unhealthy to breathe in. This is extremely concerning, and I won’t be returning.

Google
This review is long overdue and Ive been coming here for a while now. I quite enjoy visiting this place and would usually grab their croissant and kouign amann. I love the flaky buttery goodness of these pastries. The chocolate croissants are good as well as the almond one - I love that the almond filling is not so overpowering. The ridgewood cake here is also very good along with other cakes. However, having tried so many coffee places, the coffee here is just okay and good enough to pair with their pastries. place can get busy even during the weekdays especially when the weather is nice and you can just see people enjoying their outdoor seating. Inside can get quite tight but cozy at the same time. Staff are efficient though and line usually runs quick when I order. Come check this place out if you havent.

Yelp
Tried their flan. A bit different from the traditional ones. It's creamy and with dough on the bottom and on the side. Service is quick. It's a small shop so it gets crowded with a few people.

Yelp
Lovely bakery with absolutely beautiful baked goods. They are always busy so it takes a little time to get your drinks and order but there are plenty of tables to sit and eat inside and outside. Stopped in today after sushi next door to grab a coffee and dessert. Yummy.
google avatar

Yelp
I'd consider this your "classic" bakery in terms of pastries available - scones, danishes, croissants, etc. The only thing a bit different is the 4 types of brioche available. When asked what is the most popular the employee started with the blueberry almond then continued listing all the flavors saying they were all popular. I ordered the raspberry and it had the perfect flavoring. I also had an almond croissant, which was okay. Not the best I've had but decent. $10.27 for both items. Prices are posted in the display cases. You can find the menus on the ledge directly behind them. Most baked goods were $4-$5 which I think is reasonable. Individual cakes are $8.45. There are plenty to choose from! They also have sandwiches, soups and more. It's definitely worth coming here to pick something up or to sit and enjoy something. There are quite a few tables inside and outside. Considering how warm it was on the day I went most outdoor tables were taken.

Yelp
Stopped by this bakery with some friends and tried the best almond croissant I've ever had in my life! My caramel latte was excellent as well, but the almond croissant was flaky, and super flavorful. The service was quick as well and you could tell this bakery is loved by the amount of people waiting in line.

Yelp
Stopped in for some pastry's and was shocked at how many options they had! They were constantly baking new pastries in the back and even had a fresh orange juice squeezing machine. We got a bunch of pastries and some tarts and they were all done perfectly, the croissants are really awesome would definitely recommend. The espresso machine looked extremely professional I wish I got a coffee but next time!

Yelp
Do the pastries taste as good as they look? Mehhhhh... I came by around 10pm for a post-dinner treat. After looking through the reviews, I was excited to try one item in particular: the key lime tart. Sadly, they ran out :( It's understandable, considering how busy they are and how late I came in. After taking some time looking at the displays, I ended up getting two mini cakes instead, which cost close to $20. For that price, I was expecting to have some of the best cakes of my life. Unfortunately, they were mediocre. -The Broad (coconut sponge with mango & passion mousse and raspberry filling): VERY tarty and sweet. A bit overwhelming but it was the better one out of the two. -The Woodland (madeline sponge with cream cheese, lemon zest, strawberries): While I did like the spongy texture, there was very little flavor... it just tasted like a plain cake with strawberry puree in the middle. Not impressed... but I'm willing to give Sook another try. Next time I'll try a few more pastries and maybe a crepe. They do have a variety of other things to try like tarts, macarons, breakfast baked goods, croissant sandwiches, bread, and drinks... so hopefully next time will be a redemption.

Yelp
I like Sook Pastry. This bakery offers an impressive array of delicious pastries, cakes, and bread. Greeted with a warm smile and the aroma of freshly baked goods. The display case was filled with an assortment of treats, making it difficult to choose just one. We opted for the individual cakes, a Lincoln and the Godwin. The Lincoln, chocolate focused, had thin layers of cake, and when cut with a fork, oozed a liqueur, both complimentary and suitable for the cake. The Godwin, hazelnut with cream, was delicate. Both were not overly sweet and equally delicious. The cakes were carefully crafted, and ingredients are top quality. These are obviously not bulk manufactured from some mega-bakery that caters to the over-the-top bold rich sugary desert lovers. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, happy to offer recommendations and answer questions. If you like French pastries, visit Sook Pastry. I will!

Yelp
Yes. Yes. Yes. Service - fantastic. Super helpful, the line moved so quick. Friendly staff and very knowledgeable about all their items. Sook is what baked good dreams are made of. I opted for the bakery but will be back sometime for the bread and chocolate shop because - how could I not? After having dinner in Ridgewood I dragged my boyfriend to Sook for some dessert to take home. After drooling and looking at their showcase we settled on a fruit eclair and a key lime tart. The tart was literally a work of art. Scrumptious, delicious, packed with fresh flavor. This was one of my favorite desserts I've ever had. Get it, just trust me. My boyfriend loved the eclair. I also got some other goodies to try the next day. A croissant - perfect, flaky, buttery. Everything you want a croissant to be. A chocolate croissant and an almond croissant also somehow fell into my bag. Both delectable. I mean I probably won't be able to have a croissant from anywhere else and be fully satisfied. We also got two coffees which were delicious and a perfect end to our foodie filled night. This store is truly perfect for dessert or a breakfast pastry. It's small but the line moves quick and they have a nice little outdoor dining section available. Cant recommend Sook enough!

Yelp
Tiny place with beautiful desserts, delicious baked goods along with crepes & some tasty coffee. Their cappuccino was hot and delicious. My friend thought it tasted a little bitter so she added some sugar but mine was perfect. The tables outside have signs taped onto the actual marble table top about not being allowed to move them around so its not too aesthetically pleasing and definitely not looking good if you want to take photos of your food - as the saying goes "phone eats first" lol. Cute little place though & dog friendly too!
google avatar

Hwal L.

Yelp
Perhaps I've been up in the Capital Region for too long, but the initial sticker shock was real. With the first bites of our selection and in consideration of the likely target market of Sook's, all was forgotten except for the overall deliciousness. - The avocado + hard boiled egg croissant had the cool dijon-like dressing holding the sliced egg and avocado together in a mysteriously still-crispy and battery croissant - 5/5 - Banana tart: the tart base was the real star, as I have rarely had one so moist and tasty - 5/5 - The Lincoln: chocolate ganache, coffee cream, and some kinda sponge make this almost indistinguishable from a typical tiramisu, but it's very tasty still - 3.5/5 There are seats inside and outside along the edge of the street front, and they have an a la carte menu. I hope they continue to do well.

Yelp
We stopped here for pastries and macarons to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Wanted some sweet treats! We got a box of macarons (they come in packs of 3 or 12) and 3 of the small cakes. The macarons were good but nothing more. The cakes were very fresh - our favorite was the Broad which had coconut and passionfruit!
google avatar

Yelp
Soon is a lovely Parisian Pastry shop right in the heart of Ridgewood, NJ with indoor and outdoor seating. There are too many goodies to list and they are all candy to the eye. You can also get coffee there. My friend and I decided upon a raspberry brioche which was killer and a chocolate chocolate chip cookie with walnuts. The cookie was ridiculously rich and chocolately! We both had iced lattes, enjoyed the festive environment, our delicious treats and our friendship.
google avatar

Yelp
Variety of delicious bakery items. Also their savory and sweet crepes are amazing ! We also got a birthday cake from the place and it was one of the most delicious cakes we ever had! Downside: Small place inside work a few tables close to each other and fills up quickly. A few tables outside as well, good for summer.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
My sister brought these for our thanksgiving dinner and they were pretty good. The macarons were really moist! I tried two of the flavors... I believe chocolate and pistachio. I'm never a big fan of pistachio but the flavor was good enough for me, not overpowering. We had the apple tart and it wasn't bad. I took some home and microwave it the next day for 30 seconds and soo good!! Much better!! Would love to try their other pastry!

Yelp
When my office celebrates milestone birthday - this is the place to get a cake! This was our second time and this time we order the hillside it was such a hit! As I am disabled with a cane - one of The staff actually took the cake to my car - which was really nice! Its a small place but very comforting - their macrons are to die for and just went the other day for a gift card and I got honey croissants with some butter OMG - defiantly go check out as they do offer the cakes as small cakes as well.

Yelp
The pastries are the best. Everything they sell is great. Except the tall korean guy who is disrespectful, unprofessional and rude. I got in the store at 6:30 am. He said Sook opens at 7:00 am. I said their website tells the customers that it opens at 6:00 am and their door is open where customers can come in anytime. The tall korean guy insisted that they open at 7am . Another customer came in and that same tall korean guy said the same thing that the store opens at 7am although the website tells everybody they open at 6:00 am. This korean guy was driving us away . Very rude and very unprofessional he needs a proper customer service training. We are regular customers here we live in the neighborhood and we've been coming here before 7:00 am and they accept and sell pastries, coffee, etc before 7:00 am all the time. If it's true they open at 7:00 am sharp, change the time in the website to 7:00 am. Its that simple. Thank you

Alyssa D.

Yelp
It was terribly freezing outside, so we ran into a bakery. As soon as we walked in, the smell smacked us right in the face, much to our delight! It's an interesting two-part café because they're connected but you can't walk through it you have to walk outside and back inside to get from once to the other. It was particularly busy that day, mostly probably because it was cold, but I believe they have good business in general, judging by their desserts. Overall a cute café and I would totally come back.
google avatar

Dennis M.

Yelp
Sook pastries helped to make our Christmas dinner really special. We purchased an assortment of delicious pastries to bring to a family dinner. Everything was absolutely divine. The deserts were the hit of the evening.
google avatar

Rebecca F.

Yelp
If you're craving something sweet after hours, Sook Pastry is the place to be. It's cozy, charming, and smells like heaven the second you walk in. Perfect for after dinner dessert or date. Their crepes? Unreal. Perfectly thin, slightly crisp, and loaded with Nutella, berries, and powdered sugar if you choose. The hot chocolate is rich, creamy, and topped with homemade whipped cream--basically a hug in a mug. The pastry case is packed with croissants, tarts, and colorful macarons. If you're into late-night sweets, this spot is a must. Highly recommend the nutella crepe with a hot chocolate!
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
What an incredible bakery! Everything I have tried has been delicious, great coffee, excellent service. We shared a baguette with ham and brie - they heated it up for us without us even asking. You will wait in line with the Ridgewoodians at peak times - just know that you are in for a treat!
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
This place is insane bakery/french stuff. Truly a delight with its bread and treats and cakes. Love love love!

Allie P.

Yelp
Ambiance is freaking incredible , Off the charts even. Jazz music on the speakers, impeccable summer weather with that serendipitous evening breeze, you're in the middle of the tristate area yet u feel as though u are immersed in some Parisian panorama It's hooting and hollering The ridgewood community is out on the town

Steve C.

Yelp
Bought the "Grove" recently and this is what I found in my box once home. Not sure what happened and like to know.
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
After doing a long run near by, I decided to treat myself to a breakfast as Sook Pastry. I can definitely see the potential for this place to be packed on the weekend--so many delicious offerings! I had a latte and their duck fat bacon, egg and Gruyère sandwich on a croissant. Oh my word, this hit the spot! The bacon was especially crispy and the croissant was simply divine. I decided to bring home a chocolate almond croissant for the next morning. Slightly disappointed that I was given an almond croissant instead (which was terrific), but I suppose it's a good reason to go back and try some more amazing baked goods.
google avatar

Jaclyn K.

Yelp
Nothing but love for this place! Delicious food, friendly staff, and as tiny as the place is causing it to get pretty crowded sometimes- I have never been rushed out.
google avatar

Christopher V.

Yelp
Wow, and that is pretty much all I have to say. First time stopping in with the family and friends after dinner at Park West Tavern (see my review for that dinner) This is a must stop to fulfill your sweet tooth obsession! Take it from me, a big guy who occasionally likes his sweets.
google avatar

Kerry B.

Yelp
These pastries are some of the best in the area - even than in NYC! The brioches are a must try and the coffee is quite good as well. The one downside is that it's quite tiny and there's not much room to wait for your order, so pack your patience if you go during a busy time.
google avatar

Aneesha M.

Yelp
Always absolutely delicious!! When my partner and I are looking to treat ourselves to some good sweets, this a place thats always in mind. Their cakes and mini cakes are delicious and always so creamy and moist. My personal favorite is the Planetarium. 10/10 recommend. The Hillside tastes very good as well. The Ridgewood is good if you like dark chocolate and a deep flavor. The service is good, they work quick behind the counter. The place is a bit crowded at times with it's popularity but they have both indoor and outdoor seating which is nice. The tables are not always clean or wiped down fully which is a downside and theres paper taped to the outdoor tables which can get a bit sticky and peel. However, with that being said, the main focus is on the food and the here and there's won't stop me from coming here. The desserts are just too good! As for the bubble teas, they changed their recipe/mix a few years back and Ive completely stopped getting them now as the flavor just is not ideal anymore. It used to be very good but it is not anymore. The taro bubble tea no longer tastes like taro and has been replaced with a strong vanilla flavor. It feels like I'm just drinking sugary vanilla milk. If and when you go, get the pastries and desserts, maybe a coffee as well.
google avatar

Melinda M.

Yelp
Pastries are delectable. I love sitting and having a tea and pastry pretending I'm in Downton Abbey. I've been here a few times with my girlfriends and just sat in the outdoor seating (in the fall) chatting and sipping on a warm drink. The pastries are a little pricey but fresh and very much worth it. Their tarts especially are a favorite of mine (love the berries or the banana). Cute cafe and gave nice sweet and homey Hallmark cafe energy. There are two "rooms" the other is dedicated to chocolate (which I recommend also!)
google avatar

Jenny P.

Yelp
Pastries: beautifully crafted and exquisite tasting! They tasted as delicious as they look tantalizing. Coffee and tea were also good Service: friendly Ambiance: tight cramped spacing; may be better to take out

Alina A.

Yelp
I absolutely love love love love their coffee! Is it bad I want to live to Ridgewood for their coffee?!?! I downloaded yelp just so I could review for them. I can't stress this enough their coffee is amazing and incredible the iced caramel coffee is cold but the flavor makes you feel warm inside. The service is also incredible there so sweet and better than Starbucks one hundred percent. There pastries look so incredible I always get tempted to buy all their pastries
google avatar

Mario D.

Yelp
Excellent pastries, you can't go wrong. Their brioche is the best. Wish it was roomier. They are almost always full.

Yelp
I LOVE this little nook. On a chance visit to NJ, we stopped by this absolutely lovely place. From the outside, it looks like a small hole in the wall with lots of little tables and people crammed into the space. But you should know that if there are a lot of people stuffed into a little shop, it's about to be a 10/10. So with mild expectations, I stood in line as we perused the cases with their creations of pastry. These were some of the cutest and vibrant colors I had seen in a pastry shop. I was super impressed to learn that the owner was an Asian woman who had studied under prestigious patisseries and was pretty well known in the neighborhood. I actually was even more impressed when I saw her behind the counters, putting together customer orders or bringing out coffee to the floor. We ordered the cappuccino and a couple of pastries and let me tell ya. The pastries were devoured long before we even touched our coffees. I didn't even have a chance to get a photo of those. And the coffee? Fabulous. I wanted to have another cup but I had to leave to travel. This place is definitely jam packed, but they have beautiful pastries and delicious coffee. The ambience is great, the staff is so accommodating, and I just loved being in that space. 10/10 recommend stopping in to enjoy the buzz in the air.

A K.

Yelp
What a gem! Sook has been a consistent staple in Ridgewood. It is a wonderful spot for a delicious coffee, or a beautifully crafted tasty pastry or a gorgeous dessert for a special occasion. Crepes and sandwiches are a delectable menu option. Seating inside is sparse. There are seats outside as well if the weather is nice.
google avatar

Mel Y.

Yelp
Decadent desserts and limited lunch and bakery items A Korean owned bakery with nice drinks, baked goods and some soups and sandwiches. It's a small spot but often seems busy. They have lots of different croissant, bread and other pastries, as well as specialty coffees and teas including bubble tea. It's a Ridgewood staple for good reason.
google avatar

Elba P.

Yelp
Delicious pastries and coffee. Cute little place too. I want to go back and try more desserts
google avatar

Dhruti T.

Yelp
My friend who is local to North Jersey recommended this place and it was fantastic! Their little chocolate and fruit cakes were so rich and tasty. Their chocolate moose especially was so light and creamy, I loved it! We ate those for dessert and then we had a bunch of other pastries for breakfast the next day. My favorite was the chocolate croissant. We heated it up a little just to get the inner chocolate melted and it was perfect. I would definitely get treats from here again!
google avatar

Nataliya R.

Yelp
Little bit expensive but very good cake Same price very expensive but very good quality
google avatar

Yelp
My go to for all special occasion cakes and pastries. I feel totally blessed to have this bakery close by and a great spot for date nights. American desserts just looks so sad from here on...
google avatar

Ry F.

Yelp
Food is amazing. Pastries, crepes, etc. service is good. Ambience is limited by its limited seating but well worth it.

Olly D.

Yelp
The pastries are flawless but I come here for the foccacia. Fluffy interior studded with olives and a chewy crust brushed with olive oil. I plan on trying other breads which all look amazing. This is a cozy cafe to eat in with a charming ambience. Gourmet in house made chocolates are also on offer.

Yami P.

Yelp
I lovee the pastry's the coffees it could get a little busy and packed but I think it's worth it

Yelp
January 1 2024 - still same 5 stars and great to walk in near 7am and in New Year's Day and see overflowing stock of everything - some still warm from the oven. The hard work they do here never stops and it shows.
