Sorrel Restaurant

Very pleasant and technically skilled cooking overall, with a few stand‑out moments. A couple of the tasting menu dishes were genuinely excellent, and the bread and butter in particular was outstanding. However, not everything lived up to the standard you’d expect. The duck was very ordinary and lacked the depth or precision you’d anticipate at this level, and one of the desserts also fell short. At just over £200 per head (included drinks), the experience should feel consistently memorable, and a few elements didn’t quite reach that mark. I also felt the drink recommendations were a little pushy, which took away from what should have been a more relaxed service. On top of that, there were too many interruptions from the staff, even though they were all genuinely lovely and well‑intentioned. And please; skip the gold on the food. It doesn’t elevate the dish and ends up looking more tacky than luxurious. Overall, it’s worth visiting to experience a menu like this.

The wine pairings were beautiful, the courses fascinating, and the team really went above and beyond to ensure an excellent experience for us. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us and show us the kitchen too, this experience made our evening so memorable. I came here with my Mother as a joint birthday celebration and it was truly one to remember. We look forward to returning again soon. Thanks again team!

Very pleasant, highly skilled cookery on show. A couple of the courses on the tasting menu were sensational, the bread being one of them. Most courses were nice but not particularly memorable. Would expect a bit more for these prices. Won't rush back, but it's worth coming to experience menus like this every now and again.

We expected a lot from a 1 star Michelin restaurant and were not disappointed. In fact it exceeded our expectations. The food, service and atmosphere were perfect. Both friendly and refined and wonderful to see that the passing of the baton from Chef Steve Drake to Alex Payne continues the tradition of superb food. Thank you for making my dad’s 90th as special as it should be.

Our experience for lunch was very good. The service is impeccable by the Italian waiter. Many of the courses were standouts, such as the tartare and other appetisers, the cod, the stone bass, and the chocolate mousse (best mousse I’ve ever had). The very last surprise course at the end is a touch of genius - I won’t spoil it because I really appreciated the surprise factor. The duck was slightly underwhelming - I think it would benefit from the skin being crunchy. Food quantity was good. The lunch lasted probably 2h which is my personal max but that’s subjective, some people like it longer/shorter. The food kept coming throughout the 2h which is key - we were not left waiting for courses. The choice of wine by the glass is limited but we found a good 1er cru Chablis, which though was very overpriced. The venue is cozy, but not a highlight. The tables are large and sofa seating is comfortable. The kitchen looks very nice with big windows and light coming in, which I’m sure helps the chef and cooks there do a good job. The bill came at 380gbp for 2 tasting menus and 3 glasses of wine.

Our first visit to Sorrel, the venue is a lovely 17th century building where the original character has been retained in a tasteful manner, setting a great ambiance to enjoy your meal. We were welcomed by Antonio, the front of house who came across as a very pleasant, professional and helpful chap who demonstrated his knowledge of the courses throughout the meal. Like the other staff he was attentive without being overbearing and was easy to engage in general conversation. The food was absolutely divine, I understand that the owner Steve has now taken a back seat and handed over to new Executive Chef Alex Payne and after enjoying this meal I feel sure that Steve can feel confident that Sorrel is in safe hands. The courses were presented by a combination of the chefs and waiting staff who clearly take pride in imparting their knowledge of each dish upon the customers. Each course was thoroughly enjoyed by both of us, presentation of all the dishes was a work of art well deserving of pictures in an art gallery. A particular highlight was the scallop course where the sauce perfectly complimented the scallop together with the tiny mushrooms and various form of caviar creating an explosion of flavour and different textures in your mouth, simply heaven in the mouth! The first course was a lobster tart, again absolutely delicious followed by “Jammy Dodgers” but made from something very different and tasting nothing like you’d expect so playing games with your mind. The bread course was another highlight, with wonderful flavours and so soft bread melting in your mouth. The turbot was cooked perfectly with a very smooth rich sauce and cauliflower mouse to accompany it. The desserts were a great way to finish the meal, the “Knights of Windsor” strawberry dessert was accompanied by very light lemon sorbet which freshened the palate. The following chocolate dessert was presented picture perfect and incredibly smooth in the mouth. The last course ended with “Deja View” a fitting end to a wonderful meal. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable experience that we look forward to revisiting again, highly recommended.

A great place for a special occasion - lovely food, wonderful service and a great atmosphere. We especially loved the scallop, pork belly, venison, oh and the beef snack (pic 4)! My only small feedback is the portion sizes were very small (and we have eaten at a lot of Michelin restaurants), but it's sort of to be expected (I will never understand why though!), and the courses came a bit faster than we wanted. Listing bread as one of the courses also didn't seem quite right. But overall a great experience and we would recommend it for a special occasion.

A lovely evening spent at Sorrel for a birthday celebration. The food was outstanding and the advice about wines was also spot on. The service was excellent. When asked about the favourite part of the tasting menu, we both felt that the fish courses stood out. That and the delicious butter with the bread course!
