Peeling Back the Layers In Sorrel's Sweet & Sour Onion

"Inside, you’ll find oodles of ingredients, taste, and fun. The best part? This onion is tear free. For chef Alex Hong, part of the enchantment lies in the presentation and discovery. [...] Many tries later and with the help of three local farms, Hong had found his diamond in the rough." - Kevin Chau

Duck confit was good! Heirloom tomato salad was nothing special for $17. Sat at the bar and the bartender was attentive and provided good service.

Sorrel Toronto is always one of my wishlist to try. It is busy all the time, and suggest book reservation at least few days ahead especially weekend. We sat down quickly and ordered shrimp cocktail to start, follow by Bouillabaisse and features of the night (Jumbo prawns risotto). To be honest, they are taste good, but the risotto is a bit smaller portion. The cocktail shrimp is a good size black tiger shrimp, but the cocktail sauce is not the best. I believe they homemade the sauce, but not my favorite. Overall good experience, good pricing and great quality of food!

Love the aesthetic and the service was decent. The rating it has on Google does not justify the quality of the food though. Beef tartar was awesome, would definitely recommend. The fries... super good. Thin, crispy, salty, delicious. Everything else was a major letdown. The seafood pasta was made with frozen seafood and the strong fishy taste and the texture was just not great. The duck confit was horrible. It was dry, chewy and way over seasoned (the veggies were good though). We tried other things and it was not remarkable. When you pair the quality of the food with the bill, it quickly confirmed that this is not a restaurant worth going to. I spent $200+ and there is absolutely no way I would ever go back considering the amazing options we have in Toronto, with less of a wait and significantly better food.

Visiting from Melbourne, Australia and we dined on Tuesday 28th May and had THE BEST dining experience! Ive never had such impeccable service anywhere on the planet like I did at Sorrel. Our waiter Barry was exceptional, making us feel like valued guests. The wine recommendations were great, the timing of food arriving etc was perfect. The food was exquisite - from presentation through to flavour etc. If you appreciate sophistication, attention to detail in every way and want a high end dining experience at great prices (for what you get) then book here. I'm only disappointed I can't come back again soon!

Google
A very well loved spot for dinner! I was a little afraid, looking at the menu as a very picky vegetarian, but they were able to make me a tomato basil pasta that was spicy, and it was really good! Our server was really unique and we enjoyed his personality! We did make a reservation and we still have to wait outside for our table, it’s kind of like they were pushing for us to sit outside, but we made a reservation inside so that was a little bit off, but when we actually sat down, everything was really good! It is a tight spot so I personally would go if you have a smaller group!

Google
I recently dined at Sorrel and had a wonderful experience. The carpaccio was top-notch—absolutely delicious with well-balanced flavors. The scallop ceviche, while fresh, had an overwhelming taste of olive oil and could have been more flavorful. For the main course, I enjoyed the steak frites, which was very tasty, and the veal scallopini, which was also delightful. Dessert was a bit underwhelming, as both the affogato and bread pudding didn’t quite hit the mark for me. The service was excellent, with staff being polite and professional. The atmosphere is very upscale, attracting a special range of clientele! Overall, a fantastic dining experience with some standout dishes and impeccable service

Went back after 3 years, food is as good as I remember it to be. One of the most delicious meals I have had in the city. Highly recommend the tartare, duck confit and crème brûlée.

Everyone who passes through the neighborhood can easily see that this is a great place to eat. It's always full and people seem to be really enjoying themselves. We had a great experience last night. Service particularly stood out to me and it gave me the vibe that I'm in Europe with staff genuinely having conversation with you.

Yelp
Sorrel is pure class. It's on an upscale stretch of Yonge, adjacent to nice shops and other high-end spots where the well-heeled come to stroll and gather. The food, wine list, service and interior are all very good quality. Although there was a gritty bit or two in my $46 bouillabaisse, the dish was very nice apart from that. (I probably should have said something, but didn't.) My friends really enjoyed their meals, especially the rack of lamb special. Our friendly server suggested a beautiful red wine in our price range. So don't let my gritty tale deter you. This is a classy joint that represents some of the best that Rosedale has to offer.

Yelp
This place was on my places to try in the neighborhood for a while now. This stretch of restaurants have their work cut out for them as they are supported by the regular neighbors so you have to consistent service and decent food. This spot checked both of these requirements well. We had the following Zucchini Blossoms oh boy this starter was so good that I ordered an encore at the end of the meal. Lightly battered and fried with no greasy feel afterwards. Good filling of cheese and beautiful finish. Bravo. Beef Short Rib I tend to order this dish usually when I see it. This was OK nothing out of the ordinary. I enjoyed the potato gratin side. Chicken (Fried version) I didn't try this dish but went well. Their wine list is extensive and has some gems by the glass. I enjoyed a good California Red which is priced well for what it is. Service is very good. Kudos to a well trained and experienced staff. An important aspect that's quite overlooked in Toronto at this price point IMO. All these trendy spots take note here those instagram/TikTok stories will get you a visit or two but not repeat business which is their mainstay here. I will be back for a revisit soon.

Yelp
Everything was served fresh saved for the lobster ravioli. Great dining experience. I can understand why people would need to make reservations months in advance.

Delicious food, perfectly mixed cocktails and amazing service. A must while visiting Toronto.

Yelp
Sorrel makes it to the list of top restaurants I've been to. The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. I came here on my birthday and loved it. It was the first time I've been out to a nice restaurant in a long time. We made reservations for 6:30 and were seated right away. We were given a seat by the window, which we loved. We were given the food menu and wine menu. The wine menu is pretty extensive and the waiter helped us with recommendations. We ended up getting oysters, ceviche, veal and seafood linguine. Each dish was so good. The oysters were fresh and decently sized. It came with the typical toppings like horse radish, lemon and vinaigrette. They weren't fishy at all. The ceviche was delicious! Could eat the whole plate to myself. The veal was so tender - the most tender veal I've ever had. Not dry in the least bit, and the sauce was soooo good. It also comes with some pasta. The seafood linguine was also good with a good amount of seafood in it and the pasta being cooked perfectly. We were so full after the food, but there's always room for dessert! So we ordered the tiramisu to share, and it did not disappoint. Definitely hit the spot. The service was some of the best we've experienced. Our water and wine glasses were never empty or close to empty. Our dishes were taken away almost as soon as we finished them. We had our picture taken with no complaints and it turned out well. The crumbs were cleaned off the table. Just excellent. We came here as a recommendation from a friend and they definitely have good taste! All around solid restaurant. Highly recommend.

Yelp
A delightful dining experience with delicious food and amazing service. There is elegant decor both on the interior and exterior of the restaurant. You are greeted with a smile at the door and promptly asked for your coat. They were accommodating for my party of five and seated us at a round table in the middle of the restaurant. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable, letting us know about the features of the day and recommending appetizers to start our experience. The wine list is thick as a novel and our waiter helped narrow down our selection. We chose a bottle of red that he suggested and a bottle of Prosecco. Neither choice disappointed and they paired well with our meal. We ordered the fried calamari, grilled marinated artichokes, and two-dozen oysters to start. The calamari was fried to perfection, the perfect crunch on the exterior and not too oily. The artichokes were delicious and grilled nicely, not overly charred or burnt. This was my first time having oysters, and I must say that they were an acquired taste. They were Atlantic oysters served with lemon wedges and horseradish. We asked for hot sauce as well and were given the jalapeño Tabasco sauce which complimented the oysters perfectly. I really enjoyed the appetizers but was excited for our main entrees! For our entrees, we ordered the ravioli, spaghetti pomodoro and two orders of the mushroom tagliatelle. I have a mushroom allergy so I am unable to attest to the taste of the tagliatelle but my guests enjoyed it. The spaghetti pomodoro was sauced beautifully and packed with tomato flavour. The noodles were prepared perfectly al dente. The lobster ravioli was the highlight for me. Each ravioli had a good chunk of lobster in it and the butter sauce complimented the flavours of the pasta perfectly. We finished our dining experience with an order of their bread pudding and vanilla bean crème brûlée. The bread pudding was warm and delicious, dare I say, the best bread pudding I've ever had. The crème brûlée was sweet and creamy. Crème brûlée is one of my favourite desserts and this one definitely satisfied my taste buds. Overall, the experience was amazing and the food was delicious. I definitely recommend checking this place out, at least once!

Yelp
The white tablecloth street patio in the summertime is one of the best in the city. Feels like you're in a movie. The food is eloquent, delicious, and clearly made with care. The hostess Sarah seems to be a staple in the neighbourhood at this point and is always so kind to everyone. Would highly recommend dining here, especially if it's an occasion! This spot is high-end price wise.

Yelp
(4.5) We visited Sorrel over the past weekend for their dinner service. Stepping into the restaurant was like a walkway into a European Trattoria; the room was filled with loud conversations, servers dancing through the aisles gripping onto plates of food, and an unmistakable aroma of freshly cooked seafood. Our first course arrived with Grilled Marinated Artichokes and a Baby Gem Lettuce salad. The artichokes were spot on - it had grill marks covering the cut side that gave it a smoky flavor; mixed with the brine of the flower it was addicting. The second course came around with the Steak Tartare and Grilled Calamari; both dishes were stunning and prepared with purpose. The tartare was cool and balanced enough that the ingredients didn't overpower the true star... the beef. The Calamari was surpassingly tender and not chewy, and was cooked well enough that the true flavor of the squid was on full display. Our last course had Lobster Ravioli and Chilean Sea Bass - the ravioli was spot on with all the elements on the dish pairing well together; the pasta was al dente and the lobster was sweet. The sea bass was cooked and seasoned perfectly and had a nice sear on top. It came on top of sorrel beurre blanc, but I felt as though something was missing there. All in all we had a delicious meal and the service was excellent. My favorite dishes were the Ravioli and the Grilled Marinated Artichokes. Looking forward to returning very soon.

Yelp
Braised Short Ribs were quite good but the accompanying potato gratin was dry and if it weren't for the layers of cheese on top, I wouldn't have eaten much of it. Tomatoes with crispy capers were completely hard and green in the middle. Why oh why do restaurants like this long-standing place serve high priced bad tomatoes?!? Pinot Grigio by the glass was too sweet. Atmosphere is pleasant but I'll go elsewhere next time.

Richelle M.

Yelp
Had heard good things but wouldn't go back. Service was lack lustre; waiter didn't introduce himself, staff rush past you instead of stepping out of the way to let you pass. Food was average - pasta prices are expensive for what seemed to be dried pasta (not freshly made) and dishes were not balanced - too salty, lacking acid.

Yelp
Always passes by this restaurant but never had the chance to step in. Interior definitely has a cozy feel to it. What drew me here was the dollar oysters and it was great. Mains were okay but seemed to be a bit pricier for what you receive. $28 for 3 pieces of fried chicken seems like madness. Desserts were delicious. Service was fair considering how busy it is. Definitively a great place for oysters and dessert but for the price of the mains I'd stay away.

Yelp
Sorrel is a nice upscale restaurant in midtown. We first noticed this place because of the patio seating set up outside which caught our attention. The patio was full, so we were seated indoors in a very comfortable and chic dining room. We ordered the grilled calamari appetizer which was served over a bed of greens and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. I would recommend it. For my main, I ordered the lobster ravioli which I had read about in other Yelp reviews. There were six pieces served in a decadent butter sauce. It was very delicious and everything I expected. The lobster filling was also generously portioned. I would come back and order the same items.

Adeel S.

Yelp
5 star rating. We tried different stuff and I tried scallop ceviche and sea bass and both of them were amazing. Sea bass was flaky and melting in mouth and its combination with artichokes and butter sauce had delicious and contrasting flavours. Was confused to choose between Ravioli and sea bass and am happy to make this decision. Lobster ravioli for next time perhaps as this is a must revisit restaurant. Creme brûlée was just okay as you can have creme brûlée from anywhere else, or maybe I'm not too excited about desserts or maybe the expectations were super high after having such delicious starter and main course.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Toronto may have moved locations, but they took as good of care of me in this new location as they used to when they were on Yorkville. We had reservations for a busy Friday night at 9pm. This place was hopping so it took a little while to clear our table which was no problem as they were quick to buy my group a drink and squeeze us into a little space at the bar. We finally did get a table for 5 in the middle of the dining room and our server was over in a flash to fill us in the that day's specials as well as to take our appetizer order. I wish I could remember his name as he was really terrific and I know given we were his last table of the night, he had to be tired but you would never have known it. He steered us toward the ceviche, octopus and steak tartar as well as the oysters of the day. All were delicious and came out timed perfectly. For our entrees, we had a range of items from the steak of the day to my "fried chicken" which the server had suggested and was a warm honey goodness that still has be licking my lips about. And then for dessert, the bread pudding was my favorite although the group liked the chocolate torte as well. Prices for drinks and dinner ran about $100 a person which was totally reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food served. I was thrilled my friends liked this place as much as I do as that is always a risk when you are the one suggesting a place. Always at the top of my list to visit when I head to Toronto, Sorrel holds a special place in my heart. You don't find many places that do things so right with consistency. Check it out!

Yelp
This restaurant consistently produces very high quality food, service, and wine. I'm sure that the fact that the owner is invariably on the premises helps, and that the staff are long-time employees. Hence it's invariable popularity. We had two outstanding 2015 Burgundies from the wine list, one white and one red at roughly $100 apiece. Our waiter, as always, was well informed, helpful, and skilled in their profession. We had the artichoke starter, which has been on the menu for quite a while and is well worth trying. The artichokes were soft, tasty and the dish was good to share. The lobster ravioli, something that one would not normally choose from a menu, was simply outstanding: Clearly identifiable delicate pieces of lobster packed in big shells of pasta. The salad of tomato and beets was fine. Our red snapper was excellent and was plenty to share. We always have frites here, because they are so good.

Fraser G.

Yelp
Normally an excellent experience but this evening I had my worst restaurant experience ever and the restaurant staff made it worse. At the end of an enjoyable meal, when I was given the cheque I noticed an error with the cocktails. There was a charge for a drink we did not order. At the same time there was one mIssed drink. The problem was the drink we did not order was more expensive and I simply asked for the bill to be corrected. The waiter brought this to the attention of the bartender who came over and explained in rather short terms that the drinks we had prior to the meal were all the same price as this particular drink. He then left. I had to ask the waiter once again to speak to the the bartender and ask for the bill to be corrected. The drink we did not have was more expensive. The waiter returned with the bill and explained it had been corrected but had been asked how many servings of bread we had and that in future if we have more than 2 orders of bread that we would need to lay $4... which was what we had been over charged. Simply put, this translates to... you should be thankful we gave you free bread. I was so shocked. I had been going to this restaurant for many years, sometimes 2-3 times per week. Many times I had more than 2 orders of bread without realizing I had apparently been taking advantage of the restaurant. Perhaps it was because I was a loyal customer. I am disappointed that I didn't have my wits about me to not give my usual 20% tip. I was in disbelief at the feeling of being scolded like a school child who took an extra cookie at lunch. Overall, I expect a restaurant to correct an erroneous bill and not have the staff fight amongst themselves selves over who made an error... this is what appeared to be happening. In a few limited experiences when I i have had a mistake on a bill, a restaurent has been respectful, apologized, and even offered simply to discount the erroneous item without adding back the original item. This is absolutely not necessary but demonstrates a commitment to service. This ruined my evening. It was embarrassing in front of friends. I hope the owner is able to impart some manners to the team. I am unlikely to find out as I won't return. Hi

Daniel S.

Yelp
very disappointed in this restaurant. Shared different salads that were pretty bland. Pasta (mushroom) was soggy. Also, took just under 1.5 hours to get the food. We asked the waiter politely if food was coming soon and he rudely said "you haven't been waiting long". Asked for salt and extra bread while we were waiting but they never came by. They did come by multiple times asking if we wanted more wine. Overall very poor experience - from the food to the service.

Nadine A.

Yelp
Food was ok. The service is great and the atmosphere is cozy, but to be honest, the food was mediocre. For appetizers, we ordered the fried calamari, oysters and sald. The oysters were perfect but for a "French" restaurant, you would expect a shallot mignonette to accompany the dish. The calamari is something that you would find in a pub. We ordered the fish, scallops and steak/frites. The scallops were over salted but the fish tasty. The frites were awful and the steak under seasoned. Too bad as we had such high expectations for this restaurant. On the positive side, the desserts were good. We had the Tiramisu, sherbet and chocolate cake.

Brendan R.

Yelp
Nice restaurant with a great patio. The seafood combo was very flavourful but the duck confit was a bit over cooked for my taste. Portion sizes were also on the small side

Ms. R.

Yelp
We were pretty iffy about trying out Sorrel. As longtime fans of Pastis, its predecessor in the space, we were suspicious of the newcomer. What a pleasant surprise Sorrel turned out to be! One of the few places that you can find wild Pacific salmon, and it comes cooked to perfection with a tasty corn relish. The braised short ribs do not disappoint, nor does the tagliatelle with truffles and parmigiano or the buttermilk fried chicken. There's something on the menu for everyone (including picky tweens), and both the room and the service are polished and pleasant. We have returned many times with different groups and everyone has enjoyed the experience. We hope to continue to come back.

Shirley L.

Yelp
The atmosphere was lovely. The restaurant had dimmed lighting and a cozy environment. However the seating was very uncomfortable as the tables are all very close together. The restaurant isn't spacious and the seating was tight. Service: The service was adequate. Our server was polite and friendly but he wasn't very attentive. Food: We ordered the steak tartare and some oysters to start off the evening. We enjoyed the steak tartare. For our mains, we had duck confit and steak. The mains were okay. Overall: My experience overall was okay. The food did not impress me and I will not recommend it. It is definitely not my top choice for French food in the city.

Yelp
Amazing food, great service... beef tenderloin steak was great, ceviche' was amazing, crab cake was delicious. I would definitely go back...

Yelp
Great food , fish was little bit pricey. Will come back to try the pasta and the desert.

Peter T.

Yelp
A fantastic meal, and I am very, very picky This was the best meal I have had this year in a restaurant. I often find that a great yardstick for a chef is how well they cook fish. I took the Chilean Sea Bass and my wife had the Diver Scallops. Often we are apprehensive of ordering these types of dishes, as so many restaurants cook them to death, but not Sorrel. The CSB came out very hot and perfectly cooked, with a fantastic sorrel beurre blanc sauce on the side which complemented the fish. The scallops were perfectly cooked to a medium rare non-rubbery consistency. We had the $1 oysters as a starter and they were great. For drinks, we took the Malivoire Chardonnay which was priced OK for this sort of establishment. Our server, originally from France was gracious and very efficient. The only mild disappointment was the creme brulee dessert which was a touch grainy and did not quite have that perfect creaminess one hopes for. My only concern about this review is that it will make it harder for me to get a reservation in the future. I will definitely return here often!

Yelp
They couldnt even take the time to return my enquires about their restaurant. Was hoping to book a birthday dinner. But found The Chase and Fish Co were wonderful about customer service, so booked there instead.

Yelp
A delightful experience..... Excellent Staff..... Terrific Food........ Great atmosphere.... One small problem.... Very loud, especially if you wear hearing aids.... There were 4 of us and each one had a different meal... All were done perfectly. Thanks for a great experience. WILL RETURN

Jack G.

Yelp
This is one of Toronto's restaurant bargains: everyday oysters at $1 per. We do 18 Malpeques with two glasses of wine and a shared chocolate torte, sit at the bar, and luxuriate inexpensively. When we want a full dinner, Sorrel is also excellent, if noisy.
google avatar

Joe V.

Yelp
After quite positive past experiences, we returned to find it a pretentious, super expensive, most unpleasant place! Unless you are one of their "Rosedale regulars" don't expect a courteous, respectful treatment. I made my (birthday) reservation 3 weeks in advance, clearly requesting a CLOSE TO WINDOW table for two, THAT WAS PROMISED TO ME. Upon arrival we were lead to the absolutely worst table on the floor, in a back, dark corner, while there were still not one, not two, but three 2-seat tables close to the window available. At my protestations the maitre d' (or owner?) rudely dismissed me, pretending that those tables were reserved for parties of 4. According to elementary math 3 tables of 2 persons each would seat at least 6, right? The arrogance was obvious and hurtful. We (with my wife of 38 years) stood up and left the establishment. It may be a Rosedale location, but don't expect the slightest touch of elegance or class!
google avatar

Frederick F.

Yelp
"Excellent!" What else is there to say? $1 oysters and $40 Pinot Grigio in Rosedale?!? Say no more really. The service was excellent and the mains divine. We will be back.

Judy P.

Yelp
Lovely French restaurant! Affordable oysters! Great wine list! Great decor. I always feel well feed and happy at this gorgeous little spot!

Mary G.

Yelp
A nicely appointed cozy dining room with pleasant efficient service .Although the menu was reasonably priced the food proved to be mediocre with the exception of the bargain priced oysters.I find the concept of a mandatory tip to be offensive and in this instance the choices were 20% and other and so I was compelled to choose other

Yelp
First of all, 5 stars just for experience. It's a small space and you'll sit at a table cramped quite close to another but you'll still feel like you have your own little bubble to enjoy, relax, eat, and talk in peace. I think the service is to thank for this. The service was exceptional. Though this place is expensive and I am by no means close to the age group or earner group that filled all the other tables, I was still treated with such respect and an eagerness to serve. The owner or manager sat us at the bar right away as they prepared our table, everyone worked together to make sure we had drinks and bread, and our waitress was the best, attentive to cues and very upbeat. Now for the food, also a 5! We got a couple dollar oysters, I'm not a huge fan of oysters but these were pretty good. Good texture, strong horseradish. Then we got the steak tartar to start. I've had many of these as beef tartar and carpaccio are some of my favourite dishes. This one wasn't the best I've ever had, but still very good. The aioli style sauce was creamy and good as were the bread and chips that came with it (getting both vessel options is always a plus!) For my main I got the lobster ravioli. This was so, so delicious. The broth or sauce was very light but incredibly flavourful. The pasta was fresh and soft, and the lobster fill wasn't overbearing. For dessert we got the bread pudding. Not the best I've ever had (the Queen & Beaver still takes the cake here), but it was tasty. Though the flavour wasn't as bold and caramely as I'd like, it was light and enjoyable.

Mindy K.

Yelp
The atmosphere was very pretty, the lighting elegant and our server was very pleasant ( initially). The noise level was over the top and it was very hard to hear anyone talking at our table. When we finished one of the appetizers we shared, we noticed there was a hair in it. We very politely pointed this out to our waitress, who had thought it must be my hair ( I have dark brown long hair). It was obvious to us that it wasn't, because the plate was placed on the opposite end of the table and the plate wasn't moved, so it couldn't be. This was also respectfully shared with the waitress. We went ahead with our meal and enjoyed it, we didn't want to make a fuss as we were having a nice time with our friends and it's not our style to make an issue. When the bill came we assumed they would at least remove the appetizer. The full bill was paid and the were about to leave. I decided to let the manager know what had happened just so he was aware. To my surprise he was rude and blamed the hair on myself or my friend, stating that no one in the kitchen has brown hair. Believe me, I wasn't looking for a discount on my meal ( the 20.00 salad would not even have dented the bill) as we dine often and i am happy to pay for a good meal as always. His denial and rudeness was almost demeaning. The last time something like this happened to me was at the cheesecake factory in Buffalo several years ago. I told the waitress and before I knew it I had a manager, supervisor and chef come over and apologize to us. They said they would look after our meal and asked if we wanted anything else. We then left our waitress a huge tip ( as this was not her fault). Clearly the Cheesecake Factory knows how to treat their customers. I have never written a negative review about anything or anyone, but felt it was important to report the rudeness and lack of class and customer care that took place at Sorrell this evening.

Eric R.

Yelp
Sorrel offers a combination of French Bistro food - steak tartare, duck confit, seared scallops - and Italian bistro fare with a selection of different pastas. There are also daily specials which on our visit included seared Quebec foie gras appetizer and 2 different grilled fish. All sounded interesting. I would have been even more interested if the waiter had quoted us the prices. But he did not. I find it very annoying when a restaurant makes you ask the price of specials. They know full well people are uncomfortable having to ask. Having been stuck before for specials where I didn't ask the price I either ask or forgo the specials. In this case none of our party of 4 went with the specials. We had Malpeque oysters as an appetizer. Well priced at $1 per oyster. But they were strangely mushy in texture. As opposed to fresh grated horseradish they provide pickled horseradish. 2 of us had Duck confit which was very good. One had seared scallops. Also very good. One had pasta with a tomato sauce which rated a good. Bread pudding for dessert was nothing remarkable. The wine list is unimaginative with an average 300% mark up. They do not allow you to bring wine and pay corkage. Sorrel is a relatively new addition to the Rosedale restaurant scene opening a few months ago in the former site of Pastis, a longtime Rosedale favourite. Sorrel was packed on a recent Saturday night during Winterlicious. But it was not participating in Winterlicious and this was not a Winterlicious crowd. It is clearly a new favourite with the monied 65+ Rosedale crowd. There's nothing trendy about the decor. It's pretty basic and unimaginative. They have crammed every available square inch with tables which results in some rather unfortunate table locations and tables too close together. As a result, depending on where you sit, you can have people constantly bumping you as they squeeze by. In our case, there was a constant stream of traffic passing us to either the kitchen, the washrooms or the coat check. Waiters and busboys were constantly dropping cutlery or plates as they squeezed past. My wife and friend were constantly being hit in the head with coats or large handbags as they were brought to or from the coat rack. I focus on the atmosphere and the room because they illustrate what I feel is wrong with Sorrel. The food was good. The service was good. But the room and the atmosphere are poor. In terms of pricing, Sorrel is competing with the likes of Scaramouche Pasta Bar and Pangaea and many, many others. Similar menus. Similar pricing. Much better rooms. Much better atmosphere. Some of them also charge 300% mark-up on wines. But most allow you to pay corkage. Bottom line is that we had no complaint about the meal. But dining is far more than just the meal. The dining experience at Sorrel was not very pleasant. I recommend trying the Pasta Bar or Pangaea.

Yelp
This is a 3.5 star review. (the 0.5 extra star is because i really appreciate atmosphere which this place had). This place used to be in yorkville, though this is the first time eating with them. The place is beautiful - an impressive place to bring people to - it has a formal look with comfortable feel to it.. with a heavy background noise from chatter at peak dinnertime. Crowd mostly older canadians, dressed to impress. Servers are dressed professionally, tablecloths are white, decor/design is impressive for such a small and intimate space. You can see the whole restaurant from most seats. Menu is varied and interesting enough. Service was friendly and responsive. Kitchen was super slow (took long to receive entrees but food was hot). I got hangry between apps and entrees. Duck confit meat was dry, meat was left on the plate. Truffle mash tasted like a few drops of truffle oil (did not see any bits of truffle) were mixed into a too-large serving of mash and the flavour was sporadic and faint (incomparison to regular mash that I also tasted). Truffle honey was nice.. if you take the truffle bits and specifically place them on whatever youre eating, you taste a nice strong flavour. But overall these 2 truffle items were underwhelming.. the truffle taste and the super sweet honey taste wasn't my fav. The truffle aioli on the other hand tasted delish (came on the side with the steak tartare). Steak tartare was nice and oniony, really good flavour - came with some hard (too thick imo) pieces of bread and some chips and the aioli). The quail egg yolk was very free of any white. Fried chicken skin wasn't crispy enough.. when you touch it with your fork the skin kinda folds/breaks/slides off the meat. The chiliean bass was very salty though the skin was beautifully crisp and texture of the meat done just right. The greens for our entrees were not creative in flavouring nor variety. Reminded me of classic asian veges because they were all done with garlic and so that the texture was soft. Lattes are yummy with much froth and a nice tall glass. There was the biggest inorganic strawberry on our cheese plate. Cheese selection was a total of 4 varieties. Dining experience was fine, but would not return nor recommend particularly.
