December 2024, winter in Baveno, most restaurants are closed. Here we are, a couple from Florida, United States freezing our butts off wandering around the empty Baveno town and plaza at around 7 o clock at night trying to find ANY restaurant that’s open. We were the only two people out on this cold dark winter day. We had just made it into town from an extensive travel day on train from Switzerland and had just checked into our Airbnb. After calling numerous restaurants, Sottosopra answered with a friendly Spanish woman’s voice and invited us in. Walking in, we were the only two customers that night. I was amazed and surprised they were attending us. The customer service the Spanish waitress provided for us the entire night was superb. She was so kind, authentic and deeply passionate about the food she was serving us. We spoke briefly about the importance of food culture in both Italy and Spain. She recommended an excellent red wine to accompany our meal. The food was the best meal we had in Europe after our 2 week stay across different countries. The chef surprised us with Parmesan ice cream… it was MIND BLOWING. The red wine braised octopus was bursting with umami and it was served pillowy clouds of potatoes. My boyfriend ordered a rabbit bolognese which was out of this world and we ended the meal with a chocolate cake and some homemade limoncello. If this entire gorgeous spread of food, accidentally private dining experience and an entire bottle of red wine didn’t warm our souls, certainly the great hospitality of our waitress and chef and staff did. Thank you so much to Sottosopra for this unexpected but oh so memorable meal and night. It was a highlight and best ending to our European winter trip. Thank you!
