Yelp
An amazing neighborhood bakery!
There's so much to love here that I'm not sure i can fit it all into one review.
Dr. Winette, the proprietor, is a two-time Food Network champion (Chopped and Cupcake Wars), so you know everything here is amazing. The standards here (e.g., croissants, rolls, muffin) are delicious! You simply cannot go wrong with a honey pistachio kouign amann. The breakfast sandwich is as good as any found at the trendier bakeries in town (and definitely on par with what you'll find at their more famous neighbor).
Saturdays are Trini brunch days. Translation: get thee to Souk post-haste to partake in some incredible delights! May I recommend the Trini platter, which includes baked or fried coconut bread, saltfish, an eggplant or tomato side, and your choice of sauce? It's an incredible deal.
Saturdays are also the day that they have matcha adzuki choux a la creme. This inspired pastry first appeared as one of the items in the color series box (more on that soon) and was so good it stayed as a weekly special item. Pair this with their spiced matcha hot chocolate with house-made marshmallow and you have a one-two punch that can't be beat. Want something other than matcha? The beet rose cardamom latte is spectacular. On hot days, choose one of their housemade refreshers - i really enjoyed the yuzu one.
Though temporarily on hold, the oat milk wheat bread (vegan) is the best sandwich bread I've ever had. If they have it, get it.
Souk thrives on its creative seasonal items and its special offerings. First, seasonal pies come online during the fall and winter holidays and offer an easy way to impress your guests. In the summer, Dr. Winette has created boxes of pastries featuring local produce. Each week features different items and they're all incredible.
The special offerings will floor you: the color series box featured an array of sweet and savory pastries all arranged around a different color theme each week. Green featured matcha, green beans, etc, whereas black included sesame seeds and things like that. These are an experience not to be missed.
There's also a small market section where you can buy spices as well as housewares and other unique kitchen items.
Souk had very little seating prior to the COVID pandemic, so it was able to shift pretty quickly to be takeout only from a cute window facing 8th St.
You can order online at their website (necessary for their special items) or at the window.
