18 Best Restaurants & Bars On Galveston Island - Galveston - The Infatuation

"Chatting with the owner at Soul 2 Soul while ordering a plate of crispy catfish and collards makes lunch all the more special. The strip-center soul food restaurant just off 54th and Broadway has been a local favorite for years. Pull up for deeply delicious daily specials like smothered pork chops and meatloaf, or indulge in oxtail with rice every day Soul 2 Soul is open. Each entree comes with two sides, but we dare you to try and limit yourself when confronting choices like macaroni and cheese, green beans stewed in savory pot liquor, and crispy fried okra." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

Google
I can't say enough about how delicious the food was and real southern hospitality. Everyone was so nice and friendly. We had the fried ribs, fish, chicken wings, green beans, Mac n cheese, yams, sweet potatoes and corn muffin. OMG!! It was all good!!! This is a definite place to put on your "must eat at" places. Coming from Nashville and finding this jewel of a place was awesome.

Google
Hands down one of the best comfort food spots in Galveston! I had the smothered chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac n cheese, and cornbread and everything was absolutely delicious. The chicken was tender and flavorful, the mashed potatoes were creamy and rich, and the mac n cheese was perfectly cheesy. And don’t even get me started on the cornbread… warm, sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth good. The service was just as great as the food. I’ll definitely be back!

Google
My husband and I went on a weekend trip to Galveston. I saw the reviews on this spot and it did not disappoint us at all. The fish and sides were excellent!! We enjoyed every bite. The staff are extremely nice and attentive. We tried the banana pudding for desert and it was delicious. The people sitting on the table next to us tried the cake and commented how good it is. I highly recommend if you are looking for old school soul food come to this place.

Google
Absolutely delicious food and wonderful service! These are some of the nicest people I’ve met running a restaurant. Everyone made us feel like we were at home. We will be back… frequently!! I had the fried pork chops, rice and gravy and cabbage. My boyfriend had the smothered chicken, black eyed pea and mashed potatoes. They were also very understanding about my food allergies.

Google
If you're looking for good soul food this is the spot! I'm pretty picky about green beans and yams, but I could have just had those two things on a plate and would have been happy, so paired with their fried ribs and sweet tea it was the perfect meal to end my vacation. The people, especially the owner, made the experience that much better. This will definitely be a stop for us anytime we're in Galveston.

Google
I came for the beef tips but they weren't available today. So for 2 people and having spent $55, we got a lot of food- fish, chicken tenderloins, shrimp, mac & cheese, yams, rice & gravy, cornbread & kool aid! So while everything was fresh & hot, the rice & gravy was very room temperature. However I'm not one to complain unless something is really really wrong. So I ate it anyways, I just wish it would had at least been warm. That's my only complaint. Everything else was really great! As for the kool-aid, we had 2 options: Grape & lemonade- we got the grape- it was probably the 2nd best Kool-aid I've ever had! (The 1st best Kool-aid goes to Willie P's BBQ & Fish Soul Food in Lufkin Texas) The 2 men working at the establishment were both very nice & friendly! Both very welcoming! We were greeted and checked on! I really love how we were able to get up and get refills as needed! The ketchup bottles were all full, so we didn't have to struggle there, unlike at most places where all the bottles are empty. There were 2 rooms so there's plenty of seating. The women's bathroom was very nice and clean! And the toilet paper wasn't cheap and thin- it was good quality toilet paper! The decor in the bathroom is nice, it has a R&B soul feel to it. Would I ever come back or recommend this place? Yes on both! Definitely 4.9 outta 5 stars 🌟 🤩 ✨️ 😍

Google
Soul 2 Soul has an amazing atmosphere with food to match. The staff are friendly, and the owner, Ms. Ouida, is the sweetest. She pours her heart and soul into every dish. The Fried Ribs are my favorite; they melt in your mouth. I've DJ'd at her venue a few times, and I've always had a blast. She is very accommodating and kind. The venue is spacious with a nice deck, perfect for watching the beautiful island.

Google
1st time to visit Soul 2 Soul and I must admit it was a welcomed surprise. Staff was welcoming and warm, which matters greatly to me. Food was hot and flavorful. Please, when in the big city of Galveston, I urge you to check out Soul 2 Soul. Ms. Ouida Cook is a jewel.

Yelp
The food here is really good...what's even better is the people. We went on a Sunday. There was excellent, live musician. Great experience.

Yelp
I found this restaurant on the maps app and thought I'd give it a try. The staff were courteous and friendly and greeted me when I walked in. I placed my order and grabbed a 10lb bag of ice for $2 for my cooler in the car. The menu selections and sides were plentiful. I opted for the fish and shrimp combination plate with greens and black eyed peas. The dining room was clean and I noticed that it is available for private parties. One of the staff also mentioned that they host events like paint and sip and have a Thanksgiving buffet planned. They also have take out and delivery options. The food arrived hot and fresh. The shrimp was battered well and seasoned to perfection. The fish was a large portion and seasoning well. It was just a little salty, but that's a "me thing" because I don't use salt for health reasons so I notice it when I dine out. Again, the fish was seasoned well, just a bit salty for my personal taste. It will probably be fine for someone else. The price point was mid range. My total bill was $28.15 for the combination plate, ice, a bottle of water, and gratuity. Great restaurant with great staff. I'd definitely frequent often if I lived closer.

Yelp
Got my favorite Meatloaf from Ms Quida and it's my go to for best on the Island . DARE I SAY ... ANYWHERE. Bonus , I got to talk with Ms Quida and her daughter. Beautiful smiles and sweet people. I'll always love Soul 2 Soul and you should to. Give it a try. Everything here is special.

Yelp
First visit here after reading the reviews. The place is in a shopping strip with lots of parking. The smell outside is delicious, prepares you for what's to come. Quick service, friendly guy doing everything by himself from taking orders to cooking and serving. There were 6 of us in the restaurant who walked in about the same time. It only took 15 minutes to get our food fresh, nice and hot. We ordered the special of the day, smothered pork chops with Mac n cheese and yams. And second one with mashed potatoes and gravy and fried okra. We had grape koolaid and lemonade. Both were good unlike the sweet tea. The gravy was a little salty but if you mixed the white rice into it, it wasn't too bad. The Mac n cheese was good as were the yams. It was a good place to try out. $40 for 2 of us with no dessert. Not many items on the menu unless they have different menu for different days.

Yelp
I visited Soul 2 Soul a week ago for lunch while on the island. It's very close to the I-45 bridge in a non descript strip center with plenty of parking space. Inside it's 2 rooms. The first room you enter is the ordering counter and drink station with the other room being for dining. I ordered the pork chop (1) with rice and gravy entree with sides of green beans and mac n cheese. It came with some cornbread and with tea and tax the cost was $18.40. The food was ready in about 5 minutes. It was served in a styrofoam container with foil on top of the food to keep it warm. Everything was very good. The chop and gravy were flavorful and ditto on the side dishes. I enjoyed this meal and would be happy to return. Nothing fancy here. Just good food!

Yelp
Soul to soul is hands down the best soul food on the island!! Their customer service is always on point and the restaurant itself is so clean (I love that so much!)! The special of the day was beef tips and they were so tender and flavorful. Down to the green beans everything is seasoned well and with love. Updating my review because I love the consistency in service and food I will be back!!!!

Yelp
We are from Dallas and took a family vacation to Galveston. We had been talking about how difficult it was to find good catfish anywhere and my husband joked, "You won't find it in Galveston because it's seafood." Well, we were curious and did a Google search. Soul 2 Soul came up, and we were a few miles away at Moody Gardens. We thought we would do a take out order and eat on our deck with beautiful views. We walked in at 2pm and the owners greeted us and were very friendly. We placed our order for catfish and shrimp, and homemade banana pudding. It was soooooo good! I haven't had good catfish in many years. The shrimp were jumbo and tasted so good as well. We had eaten at Bubba Gump Shrimp the day before, and it tasted old and chewy (another review for later). Soul 2 Soul's shrimp was delicious, fresh and well seasoned and fried. The cabbage, green beans, black-eyed peas - so good! The cornbread...to die for! The owners had a personality and nice smiles. I wish they were in the Dallas area. But when we return for another family trip to Galveston, it will be the first restaurant we visit! And we will eat in next time! Thank you, Soul 2 Soul. You cook your food with soul and it shows!

Yelp
Omg! The food was excellent and so was the service! Had the fried shrimp and they were amazing. We enjoyed the music and the margaritas

Cheryl A.

Yelp
Good customer service, delicious yummy food, nice atmosphere & vibe. I look forward to returning more times!!
google avatar

Yelp
This hidden gem is to die for! The food is excellent tasting and the Owner was quite pleasant. My daughter and I stopped to eat on our way back to Pearland and we were sooo glad we did stop to eat. I ordered catfish, cabbage & yams. Excellent and the meal came with a cornbread muffin. RECOMMENDATION: I highly recommend this Soul Cafe if you are totally hungry!

Yelp
Stopped in here a couple of months ago for the first time. On the right side of the restaurant, you order your food at a counter. On the left side of the restaurant is the seating area where they bring it out to you. The seating area is kind of small. We ordered the fried fish and shrimp which comes with two sides. It included 1 piece of (what I believe was catfish) and 5 shrimp. I selected cabbage and fries as my sides (pic attached). This cost $22 before tax. It takes a while to get your food (I'm assuming because they cook to order). Looks like they may be going to open a drive-thru (pic attached). I've also included a menu pic. Food was good but a little pricey

Yelp
In Galveston to catch a cruise. Had a free day and decided we wanted either seafood or southern soul food. We definitely made the right choice. This place is the way a soul food place e should be. Homey. Welcoming. And fried food made with love. You order at the counter and then grab a seat. They will bring it out to you. We both ordered the same thing, fish and shrimp with mac n cheese and a sweet cornbread muffin. For my second side, I got the fried okra and she got the fries. Look, if you know, you know. Soul food is good, fresh and hot. Our catfish was coated in a wonderful crust. The fish was the MVP of our plates. The shrimp had a thicker batter on them. And this shrimp were very good size. Mac n cheese... exactly what you want in a homemade southern Mac. Delicious. The okra was amazing. The veggie itself was moist, slightly soft but not mush, coated in another seasoning, breading that made my mouth grin! Same went for the sweet cornbread muffin. Didn't even need any butter! We ordered the banana pudding to go and have not tried it yet... later tonight... but I have no doubts it will be as good as the rest of the food! Thank you Miss Ouida! You and your crew ROCK THE SOUL FOOD!
google avatar

Roy B.

Yelp
We had fried pork chops and chicken tenders. Everything was great and the staff were all very friendly as usual.
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
LOVE this place and the owner! Great food and friendly staff! Will be back for the Thanksgiving Buffet FOR SURE!

Craig W.

Yelp
The service provided was satisfactory; however, the quality of the food left much to be desired. The beef tips and gravy were disappointing, as the gravy was overly dominant in flavor and resembled unseasoned powdered gravy, which unfortunately made the rice uneatable. The macaroni and cheese, along with the cornbread, were acceptable but nothing remarkable. It is safe to conclude that I will not be visiting again. I paid almost $30 with tax and tip for - with all due respect tasted like a frozen TV dinner.

Wendy N.

Yelp
Delicious! Great service! Highly recommend 10/10. We had fried pork chops, mac n' cheese, mashed potatoes & gravy, fried catfish and etouffe was home made and stellar.
google avatar

Renee R.

Yelp
The food was ok. It was a bit too salty for me although I did enjoy the fried ribs. They ran out of dessert (the only one on the menu) and didn't close for at least 2 hrs after we got there.
google avatar

Cedric F.

Yelp
The food here is excellent. Has a nice "island" ambiance and exceptional service. My wife and I had the catfish and their famous fried pork ribs. Everything well cooked. Sides were delightful. The owner, Ouida Cook, is as sweet as the yams, has a pleasant disposition and makes time to converse with every customer.

Dara B.

Yelp
Do not pass this place by. Was in town for training and stopped in for a quick lunch. Everything was amazing. It was so delish I forgot to take pics. Had the fried catfish with crawfish etoufee. O.M.G when I say it was some of the best etoufee I've ever had and I'm married to a cajun. The catfish was moist and glistening on the inside and the etoufee had just the right amount of heat. Don't judge a book by it's cover. Nothing fancy here. All the love goes into the food and the charm they show to their customers.
google avatar

Yelp
In Galveston for a quick turn around UTMB meeting. Looked for a new place to dine and found a great one. The ambience, with soft Jazz music with light conversation with owner and staff made our dining even more down to earth. We enjoyed delicious perfectly breaded and fried shrimp and catfish and okra and grilled pork chops with sides of green beans and yams. Yummy leftovers. We will be back for more next time in Galveston!
google avatar

Bethanne A.

Yelp
We love soul food and haven't heard of this place in Galveston so we were game. Collard Greens for me, Black Eyed Peas, Yams, Green Beans (hubs). Cup of Gumbo and hubs had Catfish and I, Shrimp. Wanted Meatloaf, but they were out. The Cornbread ok. Counter Staff very welcoming and told us about the Sunday Buffet and helped with the selections. We were the only ppl in because of the time, but it is a super clean place and the food was delicious. Building a beach house, so we will be back again.

carly c.

Yelp
We ordered a bit late close to closing but the woman was so kind!! The food was absolutely amazing 10/10 recommend!
google avatar

Erika A.

Yelp
We didn't take pictures because we dug in so quick.i got the fried catfish and shrimp and my boyfriend got the fried ribs and we loved it all. The sides were good.. service was great and the owner was so sweet. Found out she's from our hometown of St Louis which made it more of a treat. Please stop though. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Yelp
Finally got to this treasure on the island. Black eyed peas and cabbage done to perfection. Service is warm and friendly. Will be back soon! Thank you!

Yelp
We were enticed to visit this food establishment via Yelp. And we was not disappointed! We was greeted with the biggest brightest smile from the beautiful owner Ouida Cook! She is a genuine, friendly lady that takes pride in her food and restaurant. We ordered our food and drinks from the front counter and was lead to the dining area and was able to sit wherever we liked. I ordered the smothered chicken and it came with a cornbread muffin and rice my other two sides was Mac and cheese and green beans. My boyfriend got the fried shrimp, potato salad and fries. When I tasted the first bite all I could do was close my eyes and savor the deliciousness that danced on my tongue! I can't express enough how good this food was!! I can only recommend that you try it for yourself! Honestly I may take the 5 hour trip to Galveston just to patronage this establishment again.

Yelp
My wife and I recently visited Soul 2 Soul for lunch. I had the daily lunch special, Smothered Pork Chops, with sides of Collard Greens and Fried Okra. The pork was tender and moist, sat on a bed of soft savory rice and was covered in a rich thick gravy. The collard greens were flavorful and juicy and the okra was juicy with a nice crispy breading. Overall, Soul 2 Soul is a nice stop for a quality southern lunch.
google avatar

Davin B.

Yelp
We were visiting from California and the food here is superb!! I've never had fried ribs or fried pound cake....the owners welcome you like you are part of the family! The cornbread muffins are on "hit"...the meatloaf is !! Go get chu some! Just tell them Miss Juneteenth America's family sent you!
google avatar

Billy R.

Yelp
If yoi are craving delicious southern soul food - THIS is the place!! My family has been coming to this place for years and have never been disappointed. From the catfish, the fried chicken, the ribs (OMG), all the way to the banana pudding!! Ialways friendly service. I highly recommend eating here.

Robert H.

Yelp
There is no way this restaurant is a 4.7 rated restaurant. Ate there awhile back and had fried ribs. These ribs were not edible. I have eaten many times in Houston at soul food restaurants. Many are to die for. Will never ever over my dead body return to a terrible restaurant like this one
google avatar

Nakeisha I.

Yelp
Amazing Food and great hospitality. We drive from Austin and this is a must visit spot before we leave the island! The desert is also AMAZING! We never order desert but hands down this can't be beat! #S2S
google avatar

Darrin S.

Yelp
The wife and I stopped by Soul 2 Soul about an hour before they closed on a Wednesday. We didn't get our hopes up, being that it was super late and a weekday. So glad we didn't settle for some fast food place. Wings, Ribs, Shrimp, Cabbage, Mashed Potatoes, Yams, Mac n Cheese...NOTHING LESS THAN A 9.5 on anything we ordered. We will definitely be back when our cruise ship docks this coming Monday!
google avatar

Mariana S.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place based on the reviews but this place was not good. Period The ambiance is dingy but they have good music so you can get through this disappointing experience jamming at least. This is the least important part of this review. The important part is the food. My girlfriend and I got fish and shrimp (me with rice and gravy and Mac) (my girlfriend with Mac and green beans) The rice was minute rice and still not cooked all the way Each plate came with cornbread which was jiffy baked into muffins which were cold in the center The mac and cheese was the only decent thing The fish and shrimp were so overly salty we couldn't finish the plate The cherry on top was each of the $30 plates being served with containers of Kraft Tatar sauce on the side They have Cajun chef hot sauce and not Louisiana or crystals which I think given everything else was a sign to not order to begin with. All of y'all giving 5 star reviews to anywhere and everywhere need to stop- it needs to end. Yelp is a disappointment along with this restaurant.

Yelp
We ate at Ouida's delightful little restaurant today. It was our first meal in Galveston. The food was wonderful. We got the fried chicken and ribs. A lot of the offerings were sold out if that tells you anything! ^v^ But we didn't feel like we missed out at all. What ordered was excellent. The breading was nice and crispy, the brining was very tasty and the meat was definitely juicy. It was a very good serving size and came with 2 sides and some corn bread. Actually I'm eating some of that cornbread right now! (I made sure to save a bit for later coz it was so yummy!) Ouida herself checked on us often and really made us feel so welcome. I can tell she really loves what she does and that she makes her food with love. The lady who took our order at the counter was also really friendly, I'm quite sorry I didn't catch her name! The restaurant was clean, there was a nice outdoor patio, and they had this photo wall of inspirational black artists and movies that I thought was a really sweet touch. I think they are blessing her and her restaurant. Anyway, I won't wax too poetic. We enjoyed our food and our dining experience and I encourage you to support these wonderful people and their wonderful restaurant. Thanks for setting our first stay in Galveston up for a great start! PS her special sauce is definitely it! Bottle that stuff!
google avatar

Sam A.

Yelp
$50 easter bunch was too much $$$. However food was very good. Served on paper plates with plastic forks. Friendly folks.

Aisha D.

Yelp
Daily special was beef tips yet they were not available. Long wait time and food was not the most appealing to look at or eat.

Frank L.

Yelp
Oh my goodness! My family and I had the pork chops, fried fish, and fried okra. It was a gastronomic delight! The restaurant was clean, music wonderful, and the staff very friendly! We will definitely return. Thank you, Soul 2 Soul Cafe!

Yelp
Well y'all, I have found another goody!! I visited this place on today, while in Galveston, based on reviews. The reviews were accurate. If you are looking for some good home cooked food, then this is the place to visit. Regularly, you would order from a menu but every first Sunday of the month is buffet style. So many items to choose from! They had some of everything. The host/owner was very nice, and the employees were kind. Definitely recommend. Just don't leave without trying Mr. Willie's fried Pound Cake!! Delicious!!

Cheese

Yelp
Food was right music was right definitely coming back again. I had smothered pork chops Mac and cheese and green beans

Jeanette W.

Yelp
The queen of soul food was so beautiful and kind even though she was preparing for a Thanksgiving brunch for the next day. We had fish, shrimp, okra, rice & gravy, green beans and mac & cheese. Everything was seasoned to perfection. Her green beans beat the green beans that our 1st lady made and they were good. Thank you for treating and feeding us so well!
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
Can I get more stars to give?! So glad I tried this place. Had the fried catfish, cabbage, and green beans. Holy hell everything was perfect! Tasted like home. The peach cobbler was to die for. Place was really clean and staff was amazingly friendly. They are in a new building so the pictures that I posted are the inside now. Wish them all the luck!

Kaden N.

Yelp
I cannot recommend this place enough. This is a must visit if you are local or traveling through Galveston. I live in Houston for 18 years and counting. This is one of the best Southern restaurants I have been to. Recommend items: Pork chops, oxtails.
google avatar

Phelisha C.

Yelp
The owner is very nice which the best you can ask when visiting a new restaurant. The fried ribs was amazing and the cabbage and cornbread was great. Wish I could have tasted Mr. Willie fried cake, that will be on the next visit. The restaurant was nice and clean with a lot of parking.

Steve B.

Yelp
My party had the buffet here in New years day. The food was absolutely delicious. I had the fried catfish fried ribs which were unbelievable along with black eyed peas cabbage cornbread and a sample of everything else. I wish I could eat here everyday. The service was excellent and the owner Miss Oeida was very attentive has a wonderful personality the atmosphere is great and the music is from the golden age of music in America. Miss Oeida has a very interesting life story. Please support this restaurant and spread the word. This lady and her restaurant deserve to be lifted up and supported. Believe me your stomach will thank you. I give this restaurant 5 stars only because I can t give it ten
google avatar

Tijuani J.

Yelp
I made a reservation for 4:30 thinking it was required. Don't bother because there is plenty space , although it got a little busy after 5. Ms. Ouida immediately knew I'd booked on Yelp. Now to the service and food! Check out the menu at the counter, get your drinks and watch expectedly as your plate arrives to the table! So much food!! Daddy had the shrimp dinner with corn, green beans, and a cornbread muffin. I had the veggie plate with fried okra, corn, green beans, and cornbread muffin. Wooo, chile! Flavorful, delicious, yummy are just a few adjectives to describe our meals! Daddy had the sweet tea and I had lemonade! Both very tasty! You won't be sorry you stopped by for some real Southern hospitality and home cooking! Enjoy!
google avatar

Blake G.

Yelp
Great food and service. Very helpful for an out of towner. Whenever I'm back in Galveston I'm coming back
google avatar

Katrina B.

Yelp
Order Willie's Fried Pound Cake! I have never had it before, but I will definitely order it again when we come back. The fish and shrimp with green beans & mac-n- cheese was great! This was our first trip and we will be back. Thanks to the Queen and Mr. Willie for your hospitality and even better soul food experience.

Richard T.

Yelp
Excellent home cooking! I had the catfish dinner with potato salad and collard greens (a memory from my childhood!) Soup2Soul has "comfort food" at reasonable prices!
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
June 9, 2020 Took 2 friends for the first time. Had pork ribs (great flavor and sauce) smothered pork chops (fall off the bone) and oxtails (tender well cooked) Sides were black eyed peas, cabbage, Mac and cheese, yams, and rice and gravy. We ALL enjoyed it very much. Chatted with Ms Cook the owner...always a pleasure
google avatar

Rhonda D.

Yelp
If you're going through Galveston...or even if you live there...you have GOT to stop by and fill your belly with some of Ms. Oiuda's DELICIOUS comfort food! Absolutely EVERYTHING on the menu is amazing, but my favorite is the fried ribs!!! YES! I said FRIED RIBS!!! The sauce on these ribs?!? Mmmm...Mmmm...MMMM!!! (It's her daddy's recipe...Don't even ask...I tried) Do yourself a favor and thank me later...Stop by Soul 2 Soul. Tell her "The Cheer Judge" sent you...
